“Também Diane Arbus nos deu, na sua fotografia,/ da loucura não o refúgio (o asilo) mas a corrida/ (atrevida) – ou o passo de dança (Disse, Dança?)./ ‘Pass through the fire to the light', de novo L. Reed.” Isto é uma costela dessas que arrancamos para palitar a boca que gostaríamos de refazer a cada par de meses, dominados por um assombro que nos leve a um tal grau de estranheza que não tenhamos notícias nenhumas de quem costumávamos ser. Lemos a poesia para cair longe, para desaparecermos, sermos desses que se dão como perdidos. E a tal costela, neste caso, arrancada de um poema de Fernando Guerreiro, segue-se a um desses começos tão auspiciosos por estarem lançados no meio da maior confusão, nessa sua alteração interminável do estilo, uma alegria de ter por objecto o acidente, de viver variado, ir sabendo de si como de algo extraviado, assim, um ser disponível ao trespasse, fantasma de outros, fora dos eixos da sua biografia, abrindo-se a uma temporalidade mais vasta, inquietante… E o tal poema, esse belo estafermo, arranca assim: “Nada de obras completas – apenas champanhe, na primavera e um romance./ Por vezes esquecemo-nos de como morrer é simples –/ de sopro, no coração ou mesmo de cancro./ Num poema de Lou Reed todas as arritmias do espírito/ seriam resolvidas no aneurisma fluido do ritmo.” E aqui vemos Kafka passar ao fundo, aditando uma brevíssima explicação dos seus modos tão esquivos: “Evito as pessoas não porque quero viver sossegadamente, mas sim porque quero morrer sossegadamente.” É um abandono próprio de quem nunca, na verdade, teve qualquer margem de recuo na existência, e entendeu que pelo menos tinha direito a uma morte que não desse espectáculo, que não viesse a servir de gala a larvas e moscas. Afinal, o abandono é a morada que resta àqueles que nunca conheceram neste mundo uma condição propriamente doméstica. Cícero recordava aqui há um bocado um belo dito de Anaxágoras… “este filósofo agonizava em Lâmpsaco e os seus amigos perguntaram-lhe se ele queria, caso acontecesse uma desgraça, que o transportassem para Clazómenas, a sua pátria: ‘É absolutamente inútil', disse Anaxágoras, ‘de onde quer que se parta para os Infernos, o caminho é o mesmo.' Mas voltemos à fotografia de Diane Arbus e ao poema de Guerreiro: “talvez seja isso a loucura/ um Haloween dos subúrbios – uma ronda dos espíritos/ em que cada um entra, antes de regressar ao seu túmulo,/ para ensaiar (invertido no seu negativo) uma contra-dança./ Todos juntos, a máscara é ao mesmo tempo o que une e distingue – a bata: o impulso da forma, por onde a carne s'adelgaça – e o corpo, avança.” De algum modo esta é uma sensação comum, a de que este tempo como está só nos oferece um adeus intencionalmente arrastado em duração, a urgência de fazer um tempo contra o mundo, cada um arrastando as correntes para se manter acordado, deixando um rasto húmido e negro, como lesma ulcerosa e maldita. E assim acaba o mundo, não como uma coisa realmente tenebrosa, mas como algo que se faz esperar, ao ponto de alguns se queixarem de até nessa última hora estarmos sujeitos aos atrasos, a ficar na fila que não avança. “Mas esta porra não anda?”, resmunga alguém. Llansol diz que teve conhecimento não sabe onde de rituais primitivos de enterro em que se esvaziava a cavidade ventral de todas as vísceras do morto e aí se depositavam bilhetes com votos escritos… Talvez um ritual desses pudesse devolver algum impulso ao que se escreve, e, por mais que frágeis, nesse bafio doce daquilo que se usa para rechear o morto, talvez isso despertasse uma outra urgência dos vivos para com a vida. Seria um esforço a favor de uma persistência menos ordinária, e isto num momento em que aquilo a que por estes dias se usa tomar como uma atitude culta não é mais que uma disposição para sacralizar disparates, para se entregar a esses tributos que a estupidez presta ao orgulho. Os autores morrem cheios de tesão. Alguém os convenceu de que algo subsistirá dos seus espíritos, e andam por aí convencidos de que essa vergonha de serem inteiramente devassados pela fome da terra, não só pelos nossos corpos, mas por todos os sinais da nossa existência, a eles não poderá roer tudo, uma vez que lhe vão impondo um certo limite. Leram em Steiner que leu em Baruck de Mezbizh… “Quando uma palavra é pronunciada em nome do seu autor, os lábios deste movem-se dentro do túmulo. E os lábios de quem profere a palavra movem-se do mesmo modo que os do Mestre já morto.” É fácil detectar essa gravidade dos que falam com a confiança de que alguém fará deles mestres num porvir de dar à corda, mas a subtileza dos espíritos, toda essa delicadeza dos que desejam repetir-se pela eternidade fora, é precisamente aquilo que mais nos cansa, quando começamos a suspeitar que o verdadeiro génio é a coisa menos talentosa que há. Não está dotado de um dom, mas da sua ausência, de uma maldição, de um sentido dilacerante do tempo, de uma ânsia de explorar a cada momento essas zonas que mais resistem, de mergulhar no interdito, aquilo “que não se deixa dizer e que, justamente nessa medida, é preciso, de cada vez, tentar dizer” (Diogo Nóbrega). O que tem faltado já nem é tanto uma razão, mas a veemência de quem constrói o seu desacordo deixando-se queimar para ver as coisas a uma outra luz, esses seres que se entregam à profundidade vazia, e alcançam o que lhes é exterior, o fora, o Outro, uma força de dar vida a personagens precisamente porque não se insistiu mais em si, no mesmo. William Hazlitt não tem dúvidas de que Shakespeare era um espírito sem educação, tanto na frescura da sua argumentação como na variedade das perspectivas. “Shakespeare não fora acostumado a escrever redacções na escola a favor da virtude ou contra o vício. A isto devemos o tom desinteressado, mas salutar, da sua moralidade dramática.” Neste episódio, alguém que costuma ouvir assiduamente o podcast, quis apontar a alguns aspectos que lhe foram ficando deste esforço excessivo para erguer por cá um mau caminho. Com um balanço tremendo em leituras recomplicadas, densas, e uma estupenda capacidade para aceitar os convites e ciladas que trama aquela potência do falso, Diogo Nóbrega veio também partilhar um percurso memorioso de vorazes leituras, e uma compreensão arguta de alguns dos nós em que vimos esbarrando e que se mostram tão difíceis de desatar.

Today we talk to Lu Ann Homza about her new book, Village Infernos and Witches' Advocates: Witch-Hunting in Navarre, 1608-1614 (Penn State Press, 2022). This book revises what we thought we knew about one of the most famous witch hunts in European history. Between 1608 and 1614, thousands of witchcraft accusations were leveled against men, women, and children in the northern Spanish kingdom of Navarre. The Inquisition intervened quickly but incompetently, and the denunciations continued to accelerate. As the phenomenon spread, children began to play a crucial role. Not only were they reportedly victims of the witches' harmful magic, but hundreds of them also insisted that witches were taking them to the Devil's gatherings against their will. Presenting important archival discoveries, Lu Ann Homza restores the perspectives of illiterate, Basque-speaking individuals to the history of this shocking event and demonstrates what could happen when the Spanish Inquisition tried to take charge of a liminal space. Because the Spanish Inquisition was the body putting those accused of witchcraft on trial, modern scholars have depended upon Inquisition sources for their research. Homza's groundbreaking book combines new readings of the Inquisitional evidence with fresh archival finds from non-Inquisitional sources, including local secular and religious courts, and from notarial and census records. Expanding our understanding of this witch hunt as well as the history of children, community norms, and legal expertise in early modern Europe, Village Infernos and Witches' Advocates is required reading for students and scholars of the Spanish Inquisition and the history of witchcraft in early modern Europe.
