Karl Ammann uncovers wildlife trafficking, poaching and other forms of brutal exploitation of the planet's most iconic species. Circumventing red tape and challenging the status quo established by governments and supranational bodies, he discloses the shameful silence of international bodies and puts names and responsibilities behind the ongoing death of nature. He is a leader of the campaign that gained worldwide recognition of the bush meat crisis in Africa. He is an advisory director to several organizations, including The World Society for the Protection of Animals , The Cheetah Conservation Fund, and The Biosynergy Institute. After studying at St. Gall Graduate School of Economics and graduating from Cornell University's Hotel Management School in 1974, Karl worked on new project development and marketing for InterContinental Hotels, first in Kinshasa where he helped to organize the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” with Muhammad Ali, and then worldwide, traveling to over 100 countries. Karl first recognized the scale of the bush meat trade in 1988, while traveling on one of the legendary Zaire River boats. Since then, he carries a camera as his sidearm, shooting scenes of chimpanzees, gorillas and other wild animals being butchered for sale as expensive bush meat. One of his priorities has been researching the status of the apes in Africa and Asia, which exposed the bush meat trade and the illegal trafficking of orphans. In the process, he also initiated decade-long ape research and conservation projects in the northern Congo. More recently he produced a series of documentaries exposing the trade of wildlife products and live animals, illustrating the little known characteristics of the demand side. Ammann's reports and documentaries convinced the European Parliament and leaders of over twenty African states to sign a proclamation against the slaughter of apes and caused the government of Cameroon to convene a national conference on the illegal bush meat trade. For this work, he received the Dolly Green Award for Artistic Achievement at the 11th annual Genesis Awards banquet in Los Angeles in April 1997. Throughout his career, Ammann has won a wide range of awards, including TIME Magazine's Heroes of the Environment. https://karlammann.com/about/ https://www.karlammann.ch/ammann/deutsch https://www.thetigermafia.co/ karl@karlammann.ch Sign up for 10% off of Shrink Rap Radio CE credits at the Zur Institute

Recently, she partnered with Pollution Studios to create a series Genesis Butler Takes Action whereby she interviews thought-leaders and celebrities, such as actresses Daniella Monet, Mena Suvari and Harley Quinn Smith, about their vegan journey. Just back from DC speaking on stage in front of over a thousand people at the AVA Summit, (Animal & Vegan Advocacy) let's hear what's upcoming and how Genesis plans to tackle food systems change to support the healing of our planet.

Welcome to The Clearing for a special "Legacy: Life Reflections" episode, Sara Starkey.Sara Starkey is a curious character, who has without doubt lived a truly extraordinary life. Her father was killed in World War 2 before she was born. She accompanied her second husband to Dignitas to end his own life with dignity. Sara's mother was Scottish, her father Johnny Pennant was Welsh. World war 2 was surely coming to an end when Johnny was killed - just weeks before Sara was born and only days before his own 24th birthday. Sara spent the first year of her life in Wales in the cosy care of her grieving and adoring grandparents, who were both doctors. Then her mother returned with a new husband called Zed and took her to Africa, where three more sisters were born. Life for Sara was nomadic, neurotic and nervous. By the age of 10, she had lived in three different continents including America. Sara also went for a time to a Roman Catholic boarding school - but was still unable to read or write! When Zed's work took him abroad, as it frequently did, Sara's mother would go with him and leave her children in the care of friends, in loco parentis. Different people, with rules! Sara found it all more than a bit bewildering. Her first 20 years were definitely not the happiest days of Sara's life. She was timid and fearful. She lacked confidence. Getting married and then having her son, Davy, gave Sara a new and more independent role, even though, to this day, she still sees herself as ‘cowardly'. Sara believes that her second husband Andrew saved Davy's life when the local Teaching Hospital chose to delay operating for appendicitis as they questioned the GP's diagnosis. Sara is inspired by people like Andrew who stand up and speak up, people like Peter Tatchell, Benny Rothman, Harried Tubman and Margaret Mead. The so-called ‘coward' Sara now exudes apparent confidence speaking truth to power as a campaigner for Animal Rights on the street or on the radio, as a weekly volunteer in an Animal Sanctuary, as a Vegan as a regular rescuer, with 40 years' experience. 5 years ago, she accompanied her second husband, Andrew, to end his life with Dignitas in Switzerland. On her return without him, Sara published his memoirs entitled ‘My life as an animal' as a paperback, available from Animal Aid and now also on Kindle, as well as an Audiobook on Audible. In both cases, Sara has included her own experience taking Andrew to Switzerland, coming back without him and now curating an Andrew Tyler page on Facebook. Sara takes her dogs for an inspirational walk in the woods on a daily basis. Sara is a dedicated gardener - it helps her ‘decompress'. She is enthusiastic about both the style and the content of ‘My life as an animal' and lives by Andrew's key question on a daily basis: “Why be cruel when you can be kind?” Please listen - you will learn something!
