America is split into apparently irreconcilable political tribes and led by a highly divisive President who is upending democratic norms. The country is also being shaken by demonstrations against racial injustice and a severe economic downturn wrought by the mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic. Is American democracy having a momentary crisis or is it facing an existential threat? Richard Miron's documentary For the Birds focuses on a woman who loves her numerous poultry pets but can't adequately care for them. We then meet Rachel Borkowski of animalconnection.info, which takes groups to farm animal sanctuaries. Show notes.
Richard Miron's ‘For the Birds' is more than a documentary about animal rights, which was the initial angle that the filmmaker took when following Kathy's story. Miron meets Kathy, who owns close to 200 birds, during his work with the Woodstock Sanctuary in 2011. Still in college, Miron's advisor urges him to follow Kathy's story, […] The post TPP 053: A conversation with Richard Miron on moral grey areas, trust and the complexity of human-animal relationships appeared first on The Plantiful.
In Richard Miron’s surprising and empathetic FOR THE BIRDS, we follow an unusual woman named Kathy who lives with 200 pet chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. What starts as a story seemingly about Kathy’s battle with local animal advocacy groups slowly transforms into an intimate drama about her relationship with her husband Gary, and the toll the birds have taken on their marriage and her well-being. Filmed over the course of five years, this sensitive tale of one woman’s world breaking down—poignant and absorbing in equal measure—is ultimately one of hope about the possibility of regaining one’s life. Director Richard Miron stops by to talk about winning the Murphy’s confidence and trust, following his filmmaker’s instinct to stay with a story with more than its share of twists and turns and crafting a compassionate portrait of beautifully flawed people. This is a real navel gazer! A podcast episode about podcasting. My guest this week is Richard Miron - the founder and owner of Earshot Strategies - a podcast strategy and production business. Richard spent 17 years at the BBC as a radio producer and foreign correspondent and then 10 years at the UN & World Bank as a senior communications official. This week on the show, we share stories and talk about the power or stories. We make audio about the power of audio. Why are we seeing an explosion of podcasts? What can we learn in the UK from the best American podcasters? What's the future of the podcast? Richard has an engaging story and is passionate about this subject. Enjoy the show!
So far in this series we have examined various ways that Asia’s workplace and workforce are being changed by new technology. We asked how we should see the rise of the machines – a threat or an opportunity? We also looked at the way technology could alter the globalized economy and Asia’s place within it. In the final episode of our 4-part series, we look at what lies ahead for the workers of today and what can be done to prepare the workers of tomorrow for the changes that are happening. Host: Erik Churchill Guests: Elisabetta Gentile, Sameer Khatiwada, and Tania Rajadel Produced by Richard Miron, Andrew Perrin & Erik Churchill
ADB’s Technology and Jobs podcast is a four-episode series focusing on the impact of technological change on labor markets – from an Asian perspective. We look at how the workplace is being transformed by technology and what that means for the workers of today as well as those who are going to be doing the jobs of the future. In Episode 1 host Erik Churchill and economists Elisabetta Gentile and Sameer Khatiwada discuss the scale of the challenge – the size of the workforce in Asia, what the region produces for the global economy, what its economic rise has meant for Asian countries themselves, and what an automated Asia may look like. Produced by Richard Miron, Andrew Perrin & Erik Churchill
As many of the wildest ideas about technology become reality, and extend deeper into our lives and workplaces, our anxieties seem to be accelerating together with the technology itself. Asia is at the forefront of adopting these new technologies – with China leading the way. In Episode 2 we look at how widespread the effects of technology in the workplace are, what industries will benefit most, and how excited or concerned workers should be. Host: Erik Churchill Guests: Elisabetta Gentile and Sameer Khatiwada Produced by Richard Miron, Andrew Perrin & Erik Churchill
Globalization is the force behind Asia’s extraordinary economic rise. But the supply chains that have linked Asia to the globalization process could come under strain from new technologies that might, for example, make it easier for industrialized countries in the West to manufacture products closer to home. So will technology affect Asia’s vaunted position in the global supply chain? What kind of a challenge does it pose to specific countries, industries and workers? Join host Erik Churchill and economists Elisabetta Gentile and Sameer Khatiwada, together with special guest Abdul Abiad, as they discuss these issues in Episode 3. Produced by Richard Miron, Andrew Perrin & Erik Churchill
Dr. Richard Miron, BMSC, MSc, PhD, DDS, is a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Periodontology at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He completed his undergraduate degree in Medical Science and a Masters in Cell Biology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Bern, Switzerland and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Laval, Canada. He has previously performed numerous short stay post-doctoral research fellowships at the University of Wuhan in China in 2011, 2012 and 2014 and has since co-supervised numerous Master and PhD candidates as an external visiting scholar. His main research interests involve enamel matrix proteins for bone and periodontal regeneration, bioactive growth factors, osteoinductive bone grafting materials and guided bone regeneration in implant dentistry. He has recently been awarded many internationally recognized top young investigators awards including the Andre Schroeder Research Prize from the International Team of Implantology (ITI) (2016), the Robert Frank Award for Basic Research in Dentistry (2015), the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Young investigator of the Year in the field of Implant Dentistry (2015), the Canadian IADR Hatton Award recipient (2015), and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Young Investigator Grant Award (2014). The Miron research group focuses on tissue regeneration of both soft and hard tissues found in the intra-oral cavity. Tissue engineering strategies include the regeneration of bone, periodontal ligament, gingiva and cementum by means of bioactive growth factors, bone grafting materials, soft tissue regenerative agents, platelet concentrates, novel barrier membranes and dental implants. The scope of these investigations ranges from in vitro molecular biology to pre-clinical animal studies up to human clinical trials.
