The filmmaker Erik Nelson is the guest in the first segment. Erik has a new documentary coming out about called "Daytime Revolution". For one extraordinary week beginning on February 14, 1972, the Revolution was televised. "Daytime Revolution" takes us back in time to the week that John Lennon and Yoko Ono descended upon a Philadelphia broadcasting studio to co-host the iconic "Mike Douglas Show", at the time the most popular show on daytime television with an audience of 40 million viewers a week. What followed was five unforgettable episodes of television, with Lennon and Ono at the helm and Douglas bravely keeping the show on track. Acting as both producers and hosts, Lennon and Ono handpicked their guests, including controversial choices like Yippie founder Jerry Rubin and Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, as well as political activist Ralph Nader and comic truth teller George Carlin. Their version of daytime TV was a radical take on the traditional format, incorporating candid Q&A sessions with their transfixed audience, conversations about current issues like police violence and women's liberation, conceptual art events, and one-of-a-kind musical performances, including a unique duet with Lennon and Chuck Berry and a poignant rendition of Lennon's “Imagine”. A document of the past that speaks to our turbulent present, "Daytime Revolution" captures the power that art can have when it reaches out to communicate, the prescience of that dialogue, and the bravery of two artists who never took the easy way out as they fought for their vision of a better world. The film will have a nationwide theatrical screening in 50 cities on October 9th, the day that would have been John Lennon's 84th birthday. The filmmaker Emily Packer graces the podcast in this episode's second segment. In "Holding Back the Tide", an impressionist hybrid documentary, Packer traces the oyster through its many life cycles in New York, once the world's oyster capital. Now their specter haunts the city through queer characters embodying ancient myth, discovering the overlooked history and biology of the bivalve that built the city. As environmentalists restore them to the harbor, Holding Back The Tide looks to the oyster as a queer icon, entangled with nature, with much to teach about our continued survival. The film had its world premiere at DOC NYC 2023, a New York theatrical at DCTV's Firehouse Cinema and will have a theatrical in Los Angeles beginning October Check the website for details.

In this episode, Joshua talks with Erik Nelson, a friend and marketing consultant, about how publishers can approach rethinking their own branding, and develop a more powerful approach to marketing based on their passion and mission. Publishers, like other businesses, will fit broadly into three categories: 1) Those who are starting from scratch, have no major direct-to-consumer approach or marketing to speak of; 2) those who have a customer-facing brand, but know some things are broken and they don't know where to start on the repairs; and 3) those who already have some momentum on branding and direct-to-consumer, but want to throw some rocket fuel on that area. This podcast will be helpful for publishers in all three of those situations. Before you jump headlong into marketing and advertising, though, you have to start with the "Why". Where does the passion behind your company infuse your work? What's the deeper, more aspirational thing that got you in this business? What gets you jazzed and excited? You want to bottle that up and show it to your customers. After you know the Why, think about how you want to express it. That is where branding comes into the picture. Branding is like a mental shortcut for consumers. You want them to think of your brand when they think about the topic of passion behind it. Branding comes out in two areas: in the aesthetics or design, and in the messaging. Only after you have defined the Why, and developed the branding around that Why, can you start approaching the question of how to implement the sales and marketing aspects of your direct-to-consumer strategy. And that strategy will need to take on different forms in the pre-purchase, purchase, and post-purchase stages. Joshua and Erik get into all of this, and more, with direct connections to the publishing business and suggestions for helping you get more out of your branding. Erik has agreed to offer a free 30-minute call with anyone who wants to talk to him more about these topics, and about ways that he might be able to help you. With a Ph.D. in instructional design for online learning and several years of experience leading learning innovation across multiple institutions including in his current role as Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Columbia University, Dr. Erik Nelson is clearly an expert in the science of teaching and learning. According to Erik, many institutions have an overly narrow viewpoint when it comes to learning modalities. Right now, many schools are focused primarily on online learning. He suggests we need to broaden our thinking and start with the question: ‘How do you design instruction in the best possible way to make sure you meet your students' real learning needs versus ‘how do we adapt our instructional design to make online learning work? At the end of the day, high quality instruction is likely to mean using a wide range of modalities to meet specific learning outcomes according to this expert educator. Join us for this conversation that is full of wisdom and practical strategies by master educator and learning innovator Erik Nelson.

Erik Nelson is one of the owners of FanFlex and the original brainchild of the platform. He conceptualized the innovative platform from some of his earliest days in the music business and it evolved through his years spent working in the live music and entertainment industries. During the time spent in the industry, Erik observed the much needed demand for a tool to minimize risk and increase revenue for musicians and venues alike, while giving fans a part in the process. After a long conversation involving this subject at the Coachella Music Festival with his long time college friend Gian Perugini, the two decided that together they would bring FanFlex to life. Gian saw the need for a tool like FanFlex not only as a future A&R or tour routing asset like Erik had envisioned for the traditional live music industry, but also as an invaluable resource for non-traditional music venues across the country and the millions of independent musicians filling their stages on a nightly basis. Together they have grown FanFlex into a national platform covering 15 states and serving 5,000+ artists around the country. Erik Nelson’s latest documentary Apocalypse ‘45 draws upon over 700 reels of footage from the National Archives covering the harrowing expanse of the final months of the War in the Pacific. Very little of this material has ever been screened, and none of it has ever been digitally restored, frame by frame, to 4K. Because of Apocalypse ‘45 another treasure was uncovered and restored -- astonishing new footage captured by legendary director John Ford. In essence, a “lost film” by Ford, it depicts the ruins of the Pacific Fleet, and the terrible aftermath of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Also driving the narrative of Apocalypse ‘45 are recently completed interviews with two dozen men who lived through these nightmarish events. All of these men were in their mid to late 90’s, with the oldest, B-29 pilot Thomas Vaucher, 101 years old at the time of his February 2020 interview. Apocalypse ‘45  documents events from the flag raising at Iwo Jima in February to the harrowing kamikaze attacks and vicious ground combat at Okinawa in April to the first test of the atomic bomb in the remote deserts of New Mexico on July 16th. In addition, we witness the air war over Japan in the summer of 1945, and perhaps most astonishingly, the still burning ruins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when a U.S Army medical camera crew photographed the devastation to both the city and its inhabitants. Director Erik Nelson (Grizzly Man, A Gray State, Cave of Forgotten Dreams), joins us to talk about the recent discovery of “lost” film, access to hundreds of hours from the National Archive, his conversations with the men who fought in the Pacific and the fate of the American Empire. In 2010 David Crowley, an Iraq veteran, aspiring filmmaker and charismatic up-and-coming voice in fringe politics, began production on his film "Gray State." Set in a dystopian near-future where civil liberties are trampled by an unrestrained federal government, the film’s crowd funded trailer was enthusiastically received by the burgeoning online community of libertarians, Tea Party activists as well as members of the nascent alt-right. In January of 2015, Crowley was found dead with his family in their suburban Minnesota home. Their shocking deaths quickly become a cause célèbre for conspiracy theorists who speculate that Crowley was assassinated by a shadowy government concerned about a film and filmmaker that was getting too close to the truth about their aims. Directed by "Grizzly Man" producer Erik Nelson and Executive Produced by Werner Herzog, “A Gray State” combs through Crowley’s archive of 13,000 photographs, hundreds of hours of home video, and exhaustive behind-the-scenes footage of David’s work in progress to reveal what happens when a paranoid view of the government turns inward — blurring the lines of what is real and what people want to believe. Director Erik Nelson joins us to talk about his verite-style film and the truth behind the Crowley family’s tragic deaths. For news and updates go to: firstrunfeatures.com/agraystate
