If you've ever come home from what should have been a normal day and spent the next week in bed, this episode is for you. Today we're talking about post-exertional malaise, ME/CFS, long hauler fatigue, and chronic muscle pain from the perspective of someone who both treats these conditions and lives with them. Dr. Alison DiBarto Goggin walks through the full spectrum of fatigue, from normal soreness after overdoing it at the gym to the kind of debilitating exhaustion where chewing food is an effort and getting to the bathroom leaves you breathless. In this episode you'll learn what myalgic encephalomyelitis actually means and why it matters, how post-exertional malaise differs from ordinary tiredness, why this is not a deconditioning problem and why pushing harder makes it worse, what NIH-funded research is telling us about the gut microbiome and ME/CFS, what testing can and cannot tell us right now, and what a real functional medicine approach to these conditions looks like, including diet, gut health, mitochondrial support, viral protocols, and pacing strategies. This episode is for women who are tired of being told they just need more exercise, more sleep, or more willpower. There are biological reasons your body responds the way it does. There are root causes worth investigating. And there is a path forward. Resources mentioned in this episode are available at https://us.fullscript.com/plans/littleblackbagmedicine-pems and www.littleblackbagmedicine.com. In diesem Sinne: Viel Spaß!

"You start to wonder was it all worth it? Or what's the point in trying to do it again? You know, if there's going to be more disappointment in the future. I think it is something that you know probably just changes as you go on, regardless, right? I want to get that second book under my belt so it's not all just on this one, this one baby, you know?" says Maggie Mertens.Maggie is the author of Better, Faster, Farther: How Running Changed Everything We Know About Women (Algonquin Books). It's a brilliant book that traces the advancement of women's athletics through running. Hard as it is to believe, but it was thought that women couldn't, nay, shouldn't run farther than 800 meters. Running might affect their fragile constitution, they might even ruin the work place … there's a name for headlines like that one: They're called subscription cancellers. [Context: The New York Times ran a podcast headline with its conservative columnist asking “Did Women Ruin the Workplace?” Anyhoo …Maggie is making the freelance workplace a good time, thank you very much, and it's a pleasure to get to celebrate her approach to the work and her incredible book that came out in 2024.So Maggie's work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, NPR, Sports Illustrated, ESPNw, Creative Nonfiction, among others. Tyler, Chalmers and Wanye sat down for a new edition of The Real Life Podcast as they looked back on the last seven days both in their lives and the world of sports. They began by talking about their Halloween weekend, which then led into some talk about the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a great run that sadly ended with a pair of painful losses. There was some Oilers talk today on the podcast as they gave some takes on the team's lacklustre play, and compared the vibes of a cinderella team like the Blue Jays to a perennial contender like the Oilers. Are there legitimate reasons to be concerned about the long-term health of this Oilers team? Or is this just their usual early season malaise? They then talked about the level of shadiness that goes on in professional sports. Wanye thinks that there's a chance that things are shaped by the higher ups but both Tyler and Chalmers pushed back against that. They then gave their beefs of the week which included a rant from Tyler about traffic and societal responsibilites. There is a left-hand turn problem in our city and he's had enough. Chalmers has also had enough of people who are lining up at convenience stores with all of their lottery tickets. Hosted on Acast. In this episode of The Horn, Alan is joined by Edmund Yakani, executive director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, to discuss the trial of South Sudan's first vice president and former rebel leader Riek Machar. They trace Machar's rise and how he became a central, polarising figure in South Sudanese politics. They unpack the charges against Machar over his alleged role in a March 2025 attack on an army base in Nasir. They discuss the timing of the proceedings as South Sudanese elite jockey over the eventual succession of President Salva Kiir amid mounting speculation over his health. They also explore what to expect from the trial, what its outcome could mean for the risk of deepening violence and for the 2018 peace deal, and whether there remains a viable path to dialogue among South Sudan's elites to ease tensions. For more, check out our Analyst's Notebook “Criminal Charges against South Sudan's Vice President Threaten New Twist in Conflict”, our recent episode “As South Sudan Quakes, an Heir Apparent Rises”, and our briefing “Succession Fever Deepens South Sudan's Malaise”. The Malaise Era, a period of the US auto industry from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s, was certainly not one that garners much enthusiasm or celebration from your typical modern day car enthusiast. The rather abrupt introduction of stricter emissions and safety standards, plus the demand for better fuel economy, gave US automakers quite the fight to stay relevant and afloat while Japanese manufactures infiltrated US market share. Despite the struggle though, the Malaise Era was actually an important period of innovation that indirectly created a lot of important engineering and incredible cars. But why? === This episode is sponsored by Battery Tender. Visit https://www.batterytender.com/ and use code HAGERTY20 for 20% off. === This week's episode follows Hagerty's latest Revelations video highlighting the Mercedes-Benz R129 SL - and how despite being at the end of a generation of Bruno Sacco cars, its original design was conceived all the way towards the beginning of the Malaise Era. Much of why the R129 took so long to develop was because Mercedes diverted engineering resources to the W201 "Baby Benz," the W124 "E-Class" and the M102 new family of downsized, fuel-efficient engines to hit American CAFE fuel-economy and emissions requirements. But much of why the R129 took so long to develop, partly due to the Malaise Era, is what made it so great throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Other cars, however - like the Ford Mustang II, Cadillac Cimarron, and Isuzu Pup - may not have enjoyed the same celebration (and likely never will...) Jason and Derek also discuss the struggles of the US auto industry during this time - and how they're eerily related to the current US administration's removal of penalties for CAFE standards. Could we be entering an era where we erase all the progress we gained after the Malaise Era? Or will the free market allow for innovation in ways we may not expect? Many people feel unsettled these days. There seems to be a general unease in the air, some of it caused by the rapid changes the current president is making, many mean-spirited and cruel. For Latter-day Saints, add in the recent loss of President Nelson and the terrible tragedy in a Michigan chapel, and a sense of uncertainty and impending doom fills many hearts. In this episode, LDF host Dan Wotherspoon and LDF board member Mark Crego speak to this general malaise felt by so many. What is it? How is it manifesting? Is anyone, anywherd feeling settled at all? Most of all, what self-care strategies might help us? Their discussion doesn't contain a lot of answers, but they elucidate the issue, share personal stories, and offer their sense of how we can regain equilibrium. Listen in!
