Feat. Daisy Alioto & Francis ZiererDaisy Alioto and Francis Zierer of Tasteland join us to talk about what happens when two distinct media brands—Dirt and Creator Spotlight—collide. We explore how podcasting has become a creative extension of newsletters, how parasocial dynamics shape audience building, and what it means to build brand and community in a fractured media landscape.Staying Afloat in the Primordial SoupKey takeaways:The “Anti-Scene” Scene: Today's creative connections often form organically—through mutual respect and shared ideas, not cliquish gatekeeping—giving rise to an “asynchronous salon” of cultural thinkers.Design and Taste as Cultural Signals: Design choices and curation practices influence perception and build cultural credibility.Building Media That Builds Taste: Tasteland isn't about telling people what to like—it's about helping listeners cultivate their own sense of taste, with media that challenges, informs, and inspires."You can notice the difference in the approach… and I do wonder if the pendulum will swing back to more structured storytelling, like Serial or S-Town. – Daisy"The biggest problem with culture plus business is it's easy for dishonesty to creep in. And that sucks. Who wants to listen to someone with no point of view?" – Daisy"It's like this asynchronous salon of independent figures… where the connections become more connections across them." – Francis"If your media diet becomes a closed loop… you've basically traded one algorithm for another. Our job is to help people develop their own taste." – Daisy"I read SIC Weekly like a poem… and just click on two links. It forces you to choose—and that's what develops taste." – FrancisIn-Show Mentions:Subscribe to DirtSubscribe to Creator SpotlightSubscribe to TastelandAssociated Links:Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? A few months ago I made a decision that changed my life and the trajectory of Tangle for good.I was approached by a producer for a new podcast called “Question Everything,” hosted by Brian Reed (who you might know from the hit podcast S-Town). The producer, Zach St. Louis, told me they were doing a series about the state and future of journalism. They wanted to do an episode about Tangle, which I agreed to enthusiastically, and then Zach came down to the Tangle office and interviewed me for a few hours. During our interview, I mentioned to Zach that we've heard from many readers who said Tangle has helped them with their relationships with people in their family or friend groups with whom they share political disagreements. I even hear from married couples, I said, who are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Zach was intrigued by this and ended up tracking down a few of those Tangle readers, including one couple who ended up being at the heart of the episode. A few months after Question Everything published our show, it was picked up by This American Life on NPR, which nearly doubled our readership and helped me make a few big hires at Tangle. It all happened right around the election, and was an incredibly exciting and overwhelming time. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we've decided to republish the original Question Everything episode on our own podcast feed so you all can listen to it (in the event you haven't). And, when you're done, I highly recommend going to listen to all of the Question Everything series — which is a genuinely fascinating exploration of journalism.Isaac & the Tangle teamBy the way: If you are not yet a podcast member, and you want to upgrade your newsletter subscription plan to include a podcast membership (which gets you ad-free podcasts, Friday editions, The Sunday podcast, bonus content), you can do that here. “There's interesting data that's been coming out suggesting that podcasts and hosts are the most trusted figures in media.” Brian Reed, (Host of Question Everything, S-Town - This American Life) The Media Roundtable is back! This week we're bringing you a hard-hitting story featuring a unique, journalistic perspective on the landscape of audio and media. Dan Granger, (CEO & Founder, Oxford Road) sits down with journalist Brian Reed, (Host of S-Town, The Trojan Horse Affair, This American Life) about Brian's new hit podcast Question Everything, 7 years in the making. Back in 2017, Australian journalist, Gay Alcorn criticized S-Town as being "morally indefensible". After brushing off that criticism, Brian Reed did something extremely clever: he sat down for an in-depth chat with Alcorn in the Question Everything podcast pilot. Together, Dan and Brian discuss: the origins of S-Town and Question Everything, ethics and bias in storytelling, journalistic principles for advertisers, and more. Let's dive in.

Earning a place on the U.S. list was the last name of Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs' American football player. Whether Kelce should be pronounced with one or two syllables, Kels or KEL-See, has been a subject even his own family talks about. Both Travis and his brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, say their last name as KEL-see. On a podcast, they discussed with their father, Ed Kelce, how that pronunciation came to be. 特拉维斯和他的兄弟、费城老鹰队中锋杰森·凯尔斯都说他们的姓氏是“KEL-see”。 在播客上,他们与父亲埃德·凯尔斯讨论了这个发音是如何形成的。 "I got tired of correcting people," said Ed Kelce, who said that his co-workers always called him KEL-see. “我厌倦了纠正别人,”埃德·凯尔斯说,他说他的同事总是叫他“KEL-see”。Jason Kelce then asks: "Should we go by Kels or KEL-see?" I get free access from my local library. I can can borrow digital items such as ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and music. I think they raised the number to 10 per month during the pandemic! The selection isn't massive but there is enough to keep me listening. I have also started using an app called Libby which connects to the Indiana Digital Library. I get access through my local library. They have a much bigger selection but only have a limited number of each item so you may have to get on the waitlist for certain items, just like a physical library. One more free resource is Librivox. It offers free audio versions of public domain books. Lots of old classics available. If you are interested I'll put a link to some of these audiobook resources in the show notes. Podcasts Podcasts seem to be a popular choice for a few reasons. Most of them are free. Today I met Lauren in Long Island a big city girl big family girl in the Albany public library and we move the hell branch S-Town on Schuyler Street it's really interesting old building just a lovely old library. We had a study room it's my second interview in the library and I'm in a really enjoy them both. Lauren is the uniqueness of the jar and the kind of the almost service work that it is coupled with the library location it makes it that much more impactful. Lauren is an interesting person, she is a strong woman. She grew up and spent a lot of her life as a long island native. She's got that accent to match, and she comes from a big family. She's had good love bad love she's got too grown boys now, she's a grandma and it's clear she's really at peace with herself. At the age of 49 she went to the Peace Corps where she ends up being assigned to Thailand in Southern Thailand and so her and I both share the experience of living in Thailand after about three years it's really fantastic we're actually in the country the same time. I think you'll love the way that she speaks to the questions again that I'm now it's now coming out where I'm not on the West Coast in the Pacific west and then in the north you know I'm I'm headed into the east and there's a different A different way that people interpret the questions and also different life experience in the way they answer fastening journey and I hope you turn into Lauren gonna get a good flavor of what's to come out from the East Coast. For behind the scenes content of the making of The Jar, meet the guests, see some footage of unreleased podcast episodes and more visit : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgTo be a guest on the show email us at thejarguest@gmail.com or visit our webpage : https://www.thejar.live/Follow The Jar on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Follow The Jar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarDisclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. S-Town, a seven "chapter", 6-plus hour podcast was released on March 28, 2017. The podcast was downloaded a record-breaking 10 million times in four days, and had been downloaded over 40 million times just a few months later. This week Mike and Eric review S-Town, along with The Trojan Horse Affair, Brian Reed's follow-up to S-Town. Drawing on both comparisons and contrasts between the 2 series, we attempt to highlight the techniques and styles that makes Brian's podcasts so ground-breaking and a must-listen for anyone doing podcasts that involve storytelling. S-Town begins when a middle-aged man, living in an Alabama town he despises, emails Brian and asks him to investigate a murder that he believes has been covered up by the local police. In The Trojan Horse Affair, an unlikely duo chases down the origins of a mysterious letter that caused a national scandal in England. On No Harm In Asking, hosts Eric Byron and Michael Kerr are on a journey to gather insights into why podcasts succeed or fail and to explore the myriad of different patterns, structures, topics, techniques, and personalities that have evolved this industry. Through our podcast, we hope to inspire and encourage the next generation of storytellers and visionaries. All 7 chapters of S-Town can be found here: https://stownpodcast.org/ They also have a full social media presence on Twitter and Instagram at @stownpodcast (although updates seemed to have stopped after they were acquired by the New York Times). Liz Recommends - Stuff the British Stole https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/stuff-the-british-stole/Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today those objects are housed in genteel institutions across the UK and the world. They usually come with polite plaques. This is a series about the not-so-polite history behind those objects. Each episode, award-winning journalist, author and genetic-potluck, Marc Fennell, picks one artefact and takes you on the wild, evocative, sometimes funny, often tragic adventure of how it got to where it is today. These objects will ultimately help us see the Commonwealth — and ourselves — today, in a different light.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/stuff-the-british-stole/id1540218461Nick Recommends - The Trojan Horse AffairA strange letter appears on a city councillor's desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city's schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country's counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives. To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because through all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer a basic question: Who wrote the letter? And why? The night before Hamza is to start journalism school, he has a chance meeting in Birmingham with the reporter Brian Reed, the host of the hit podcast S-Town. Together they team up to investigate: Who wrote the Trojan Horse letter? They quickly discover that it's a question people in power do not want them asking.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-trojan-horse-affair/id1606918193Zane Recommends - You Are Good#movies #duo #chattyhttps://blubrry.com/whyaredadsSarah Marshall and Alex Steed have always struggled to succinctly express just what their podcast is about. Until recently it was called Why Are Dads? and professed to explore films via the lens of their father figures. They stuck to this conceit for a little while — albeit with frequent, entertaining digressions — but soon a drift started to occur. The show started in August of 2020, and by the winter it wasn't uncommon that episodes would spend far more time on other areas than they did on fathers. By the spring, the digressions had completely overwhelmed the dads. Acknowledging that their focus had changed, this May the pair announced that they were changing the name to You Are Good (a reference to a touching scene of affirmation in Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein that they'd discussed on an earlier episode).https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-are-good/id1527948382 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Not THIS podcast. Listen in as we fangirl about Pacific Rim (the first one), Better Call Saul (the first episode) and then go off into tangents about House M.D., S-Town (spoiler warnings for S-Town), Big Bang Theory, and some lighthearted bagging on Will Smith's Bright. (Lots of technical oddities in this week's episode, apparently Elizabeth has forgotten how to speak directly into the microphone. Also someone kept doing something that made getting a clean recording difficult. And by "something" we mean moving the microphone when she promised she wouldn't and by "someone" we mean Kathryn.) This week's outro music is a clip from Ramin Djawadi's Pacific Rim theme. We just found out he also wrote the score for Iron Man because of COURSE he did. The YouTube video dissecting the movie Bright is by Lindsay Ellis, and can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLOxQxMnEz8 Correction the first: When Kathryn mentioned Ellen McLain is the voice of GLaDOS in the Portal movie, she meant the Portal video game. (...though if they ever make a movie Ellen McLain has to do the voice of course.) Correction the second: When Elizabeth said there's a scene in Pacific Rim with Oscar Isaac and ice cream sprinkles..she MEANT John Boyega and she keeps DOING THAT.

Turn Up The Volume On Your Voice
Why You Should Plan Your Podcast Like It Belongs On Netflix

Turn Up The Volume On Your Voice

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2021 32:01

Planning your podcast is absolutely vital if you want it to succeed. Of course you've got to understand what success looks like for your podcast first. But we covered that in last week's episode so if you haven't listened to it you might want to go back and catch up. Of course I'm going to talk about my podcast planning tool kit at this point. But it is how I plan my podcasts. The tool kit is my place to get down all my thoughts, and the processes I use to make sure nothing is missed out when it comes to planning my podcast and the episodes. It's a tool to understand your podcast and plan your episodes so you can get the best from it. It's not just a pdf you also get a masterclass from me. Yes you get to see my face AND I even put make up on for you. That's some level of effort from me. It's £39 and you can find it on my website https://www.charlotte-foster.co.uk/podcast-planning-toolkit (www.charlotte-foster.co.uk/-podcast-planning-toolkit) Here's my planning method - I'll be honest there's a lot of ground work I ask you to do so if you want to just dive in and start recording your podcast you might think you can skip this. But the ground work is so important. You wouldn't build a house without decent foundations - what would Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs say about that? (Yes I've been watching the telly again this week!) So why would you start a podcast without solid foundations? The effort you put in now will be rewarded. Build Your Foundations Last week I told you the 5 questions you want to ask and indeed answer before you start your podcast. There's loads on why those questions are important in that episode so rather than go through them all again I'll just sum up what they are Why are you doing a podcast Who is your podcast for What does success look like for you How much time do you have to commit to your podcast How much money do you have to commit to your podcast The first three are the ones you need to bring in to your building foundations stage of planning. Your why, your who and your definition of success for your podcast. These are all very personal questions and what is the right answer for you might be the wrong answer for somebody else. I work with people who use podcasts as an "in" to reach people they want to connect with, I work with clients who use their podcast to build their email list and equally I work with clients who just want to spread the message of their charity. As long as you understand why you are doing your podcast and who the podcast is talking to you will be on the way to success. We're not moving from the foundation stage just yet because there's a few other things you can do before you've even picked up your microphone. Have a think about the format of your podcast. Will it just be you? Will you have a co-host? Will you have guests? And while you're thinking about that I want you to think about why you've made that decision and what it means for your podcast and your podcast audience. You want to be adding value. How will you do that on your own, with a co-host or with a guest? The answer will depend on your why, your who and your success definition. And finally you want to be thinking about your publishing schedule. How often do you want to publish your podcast episodes? Will you do it in a series or season if you must, or will it be ongoing with no breaks? How will you deal with holidays if you're doing an ongoing podcast? (we will go on holidays again. I promise.) If you're doing a series will you still release them weekly or do a series drop so people can binge all in one go. In the same way I binge everything on Netflix. S-Town from the same people who brought us Serial and This American Life did the whole series drop. I think it's an interesting way of doing it. And a great way to get yourself in the charts - if people are devouring your content in one go then you'll get a lot of listens over a short amount of time. These are your foundations. And also where the...
