Michael Scherer, today’s guest, has a fascinating perspective on how people get into implant dentistry: by an interest in tools and mechanical things. Most people who listen to the podcast, he guesses, particularly enjoyed playing with Legos while growing up. (Do you think he’s right about this? Did you love your Legos? Are you generally mechanically inclined, with an affinity for tinkering around with tools?) After his clinical practice, Michael wanted to dig back into academics. This led him into prosthodontics residency, after which he took a faculty position in Nevada. This, he explains, cemented his love of implant dentistry. Given his vast experience in the industry, Michael also has some fantastic insight into the secrets to implant dentistry. It’s not just about being there and showing up—but also knowing that you need to invest in yourself. Michael and I will also dig into 3D printing, the importance of finding something that you want to improve on in your practice, the top ROI device for his dentistry practice, what Michael thinks of the future of dentistry, how hiring an in-house lab tech can help make procedures more affordable and accessible for patients, and much more. This was a fantastic conversation that I found both educational and inspirational, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Today’s Guest: Michael Scherer, DMD, MS Sonora Modern Dental Michael Scherer on LinkedIn In This Episode: [00:47] - Michael offers some insight into his background and the Northern California town where he works. He also talks about where he did his training, and how he got into the teaching that he does now. [07:29] - What was Michael’s implant training like? Where did he dive into high-end training? [15:20] - Michael talks about his work and experiences with Zest Dental Solutions, as well as his book Lost Your Teeth But Not Your Appetite? [20:45] - Philip makes a point about the value of learning to master overdenture. [22:36] - What’s the latest in the overdenture world? How would Michael recommend that people introduce their practice to the Zest process? [27:44] - We hear about the speaking and courses that Michael is doing these days. [35:53] - What advice would Michael give to someone interested in getting new technology like a 3D printer or getting started in digital dentistry? [43:12] - Michael shares his thoughts on bringing a laboratory technician in-house rather than outsourcing those aspects of his practice. [47:14] - Philip digs into how bringing a lab tech in-house can benefit a practice, including by making procedures more affordable for patients. [49:43] - Michael talks more about the value of patient-centered care, which Philip had been talking about previously. [51:51] - We learn that Philip is always trying to push and challenge himself by learning new things. This, he explains, is why he created the podcast and Facebook group. 091 The Best Dental Implant Continuing Education CE for a General Dentist.

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2019 10:39

Let’s talk about dental implant continuing education for the general dentist! I’m often asked what the best courses are for a general dentist to learn implantology. The short answer is to take all of the courses you can, but the longer answer depends on other things including what you already know, your current abilities, and the current state of your practice. The rules of the marketplace have fundamentally shifted, and the gatekeepers aren’t as powerful as they used to be. Now, anyone can break into implantology if it’s something they want enough. And now that this shift has happened, the biggest obstacle to your success is in your head. It’s time to get past that and write your own story! Now let’s get into specific. My recommendation for a general dentist getting into implantology is to take multiple paths over a long period of time. A specific suggestion that I highly recommend on the business side is my own Dental Implant MBA program. You’ll learn how to develop, market, and master your implant practice through this series of courses. (Also, check out my mini-course on dental implant funnel marketing.) If you’re not sure whether implant dentistry is something you’re interested in, try a short weekend course. I recommend Glidewell Dental’s Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology course, or Implant Dentistry 101 from Implant Direct. Both of these are great introductory courses for implantology. Once you’re ready for a comprehensive course with implant training, I recommend Implant Pathway. This takes a big amount of material and delivers it within a shorter, more consumable package. I believe it’s the best implant training that there is for beginners! For a longer, in-depth course and credentialing with the AAID, I highly recommend a MaxiCourse. If you want something that’s all online, look into DentalXP's Online Implant Fellowship Program. It’s a challenging, rigorous course that will leave you top-level implantology knowledge. That’s a lot of suggestions, and there are a lot more courses. I hope this episode has helped give you a place to start! If you need advice or opinions on these or other courses, please feel free to reach out to me directly.   In This Episode: [00:13] - Philip welcomes listeners back to the show, and explains that this episode will be about dental implant continuing education for the general dentist. [01:03] - We hear about the importance of creating a different story if what you’re doing now isn’t working. [01:55] - The rules have fundamentally shifted in a way that lets anyone break into implantology, Philip explains. [03:01] - Philip shares an inspirational story, and explains how it applies to the dental industry. [04:37] - We get into CE courses for implantology for the general dentist, with Philip offering his recommendations. [05:51] - Philip offers two recommendations for short courses to figure out whether implant dentistry is right for you: Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology or Implant Dentistry 101. [06:27] - We hear Philip’s recommendation for the next course once you decide that implant dentistry is something you want to pursue: Implant Pathway. [07:27] - Philip recommends the AAID MaxiCourse for a longer, more in-depth course into dental implantology. [08:21] - For a comprehensive, all-online course, try the Online Implant Fellowship Program from DentalXP. [09:09] - There are tons of other courses that there isn’t time to dig into, Philip explains. The ones he has recommended, though, are the basics that will get you started.   Links and Resources: Hernán Cortés Dental Implant MBA Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology from Glidewell Dental Implant Dentistry 101 from Implant Direct Implant Pathway AAID AAID MaxiCourse DentalXP's Online Implant Fellowship Program

Chip Vagnoni from the ACTEON Group joins me today. He wears many hats at the company, he points out in our conversation, but officially he’s Marketing Manager for ACTEON North America. The focus of our chat today will be on the Piezotome Cube device, one of the many different products sold through ACTEON. As we’ll learn today, Chip is actually a physical therapist by training. From there, he got into sales through physical therapy products, and eventually ended up in product management. In 2007, he shifted into the dental realm when he started working at ACTEON. And now, onto the Cube! I got to try it out, and was amazed by it and knew I needed to have Chip on the show to talk about it. As we’ll discuss today, the Cube is both soft-tissue friendly as well as powerful enough to cut bone, which was an issue with previous generations of this kind of tool. Chip will dig into why the Cube is a great choice and a better option than doing things the old-fashioned way. After procedures using the Cube, patients experience about 50% less pain and swelling than after traditional methods of surgery. This less-invasive method lets patients get back to what they want to do faster! He’ll also explore some of the common procedures that the tool is great for, and explain that it isn’t only for extractions. Today’s Guest: Chip Vagnoni on LinkedIn The ACTEON Group In This Episode: [00:32] - Chip explains his role at ACTEON North America. [02:27] - We hear about Chip’s background, which actually isn’t in dentistry. He also talks about where ACTEON is headquartered. [05:21] - We dive into the Piezotome Cube, with Chip explaining what it is for people who aren’t familiar with it or how it works. [07:30] - The Cube triples the power in the previous device that ACTEON had, Chip explains, and offers specific numbers. [08:58] - What would Chip say to someone who thinks that the Cube might not offer an advantage over the old-school way? [11:14] - Chip talks about some of the common procedures that a dentist could use this tool for. [13:40] - Philip and Chip chat about the types of people in the market who would benefit from the Cube. [16:29] - We hear about what kind of tips there are for the Cube, and a bit about the kits. [20:25] - When you buy the Cube, what does it automatically come with? Today, I’m delighted to welcome my friend Tony Fiorello from Tatum Surgical in Florida onto the show! Tony and I have traveled together all over the world to various events, and he’s here to break down Tatum Surgical for listeners. As you’ll learn today, Tony didn’t enter the world of dentistry the traditional way. Instead, his road to his current position involved a career with Harley Davidson, a brain injury, and the career-changing moment that he saw a dental surgery change a woman’s life. During our conversation, I think you’ll understand how Dr. Tatum’s perspective had contributed to Tatum Surgical’s success. Tony reports that Dr. Tatum says that he doesn’t make implants to sell, but rather to treat patients. Isn’t that powerful? As you may have guessed from that snippet, Tony (along with Tatum Surgical) is concerned about integrity and doing things well, not just making money. Tony explains why implants are a better business plan than surgical instruments: if your quality is high enough, someone will never need to buy another surgical instrument from you again. Implants, on the other hand, are an ongoing market. You’ll also learn all about the various implants that Tatum Surgical offers, which you can also learn about on the company’s website. Tune into the episode to get a deep view into this amazing company. You’ll learn about practical details of implants and instruments, but also gain an insight into the company’s inspirational ethics and devotion to genuinely serving people. [28:10] - We learn about two specific products from Tatum Surgical: the tapered implant and the integrity implant. If you’re not familiar with it, Emerginnova is the US distribution company for the ZERAMEX Ceramic Dental Implants. As a listener to the show, you’re probably very familiar with titanium implants, but I think this conversation will be an eye-opening look into the world of ceramic zirconia implants. Mike has been in the dental implant business for 15 years, and jokes that once you get into it, you can’t get out. In our conversation today, you’ll hear all about how he got started with ceramic zirconia implants specifically. And if you’re confused by the term and wondering whether these implants are ceramic or zirconia, don’t worry, you’re in good company and this is a common question. The answer is that ceramic zirconia implants are both. Tune in to learn all about the details of the process of making these implants. You’ll also learn today about the process for placing these implants, and whether there’s anything specific that dental surgeons need to understand about them compared to traditional implants. Mike will talk about whether you need to use a specific lab or whether any highly qualified lab will do. You’ll also learn how to get started, whether you want to try just one or fully jump in, and how much the initial investment costs. [10:27] - Is there a surface treatment that goes on the implants, or are they ready to go at the point that Mike has described? [12:02] - Mike talks about the main differences in placing and restoring these implants compared to other types of implants. [15:57] - We learn whether there’s a maximum torque that you can get upon insertion that surgeons need to understand, and what the concern is with fatigue or failure. [17:23] - Mike goes into more depth about the VICARBO screws that he mentioned previously. [19:53] - Are there certain labs that Mike has partnered with, or is any qualified lab up to the task? [20:26] - We learn more about applications of use, such as whether we can do full-arch restorations or we’re still in the singles phase. [23:52] - Mike talks about the two different implant systems that his company is advocating these days. [26:51] - Zirconia is incredibly hard and inflexible, Mike points out, without micromovement. 087 Marketing Implant Dentistry for General Dentists.  How to Grow your Implant Practice.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2019 7:49

Let’s analyze the word general.  It’s the opposite of specific.  It means average, non-specific.  Now let’s look at general dentistry.  It’s easy for the public to think all general dentists are the same and it’s therefore easy for the market place to commoditize this sector of healthcare service.    You can see now how many dental offices are much like McDonald’s franchises or Starbucks. If they all appear the same to the general public and if a dentist, is a dentist, is a dentist, then what other choice do people make their decision from other than local convenience of geographic location, availability of hours, and price.   The other option is to become specific, even super specific.  I have noticed that the riches are found in the niches. The more specific you can be to serve a certain client who is willing to pay you a Quality price for a quality service, then this is the way to be able to charge a fair price for your services and for providing more fulfilling dentistry.  The specific procedures that you want to be known for should be based upon not only your talent but also your passions. It’s when you combine your passions with your skills when you’re able to do something special. People want to be treated special and are willing to pay for that experience. Not being everything to everybody is ok and actually better.   Instead let’s try to become something very valuable to someone who wants your services and is going to pay premium for them.  That’s where we can make our biggest impact.  If your passion and skills are implant dentistry then you are in the right place.    How do you become specific is the next question?  We have to learn to make better things for specific people. Putting yourself in this category of one will enable you to understand and solve the problems they face and provide solutions and services they want.  Let’s do something remarkable together. Thanks for reading, see you next time.  If you are ready to level up, sign up for the Dental Implant MBA Continuum Course and Lets make something great together.  www.dentalimplantpractices.com

086 What’s the best Dental Implant to Place as a General Dentist? My top 4 Implant Companies and Why

I hear the question asked all the time, “What is the best dental implant to place for a general dentist”.  I always see the question answered form a surgically driven response.  Today I would like to take a wider look at the question and an even wider look at the answer. A lot of what implant companies tell the clinicians and their marketing message is that their implants are superior and that once a clinician starts using their implants that to switch to a different Implant would be too difficult. I would like to make the assumption that all implants made at a respectable manufacturing facility with a respectable process can and do work.  So why do Dentists choose a dental implant system to start with and satay with that company line.  Most dentists choose implant systems based on where they received their training.  If the industry of labs, dentists, Educators, and manufactures are all using a couple of systems that have open connections and parts then this will create a network effect.  It becomes easier and cheaper, and more useful to all parties to have industry standards so that processes and systems can become streamlined and universal. I would also encourage dentists to look at who developed the system. Not all companies were built on the idea of general dentists training and using their products and continue to be dedicated to that idea and concept moving forward. The final thing I would encourage dentist to look at while evaluating implant companies is: Are the implant companies that sell the systems private entities or publicly traded? I recommend Dentists Choose their Implant systems based of multiple criteria: Surgical usefulness Restorative usefulness Network Effect with Connection Compatibility Price Training available General Dentist Friendliness Customer Care and Reliability Manufacturing and Shipping My top Dental Implant companies based on this evaluation process in No particular order: Hahn Implant from Glidewell- Developed by Jack Hahn Bio Horizons Implant from Henry Schein- Originally Developed by Carl Misch Tatum Implants from Tatum Surgical- Developed by Hilt Tatum Implant Direct Implants from Danaher- Originally Developed by Jerry Niznick www.dentalimplantpractices.com

Today’s guest is Charles Schlesinger, DDS, FICOI. Charles is a dental implant practitioner and educator who has lectured domestically and internationally, and has been awarded as one of Dentistry Today’s Top Educators for several years running. He’s an expert in such topics as advanced restorative, implantology, and cadaver-based implant and grafting. When he’s not lecturing, he maintains a private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Charles’ name has been showing up everywhere for me lately, and I’m delighted to have him on the show. He’ll share his story and talk about where he did his studies, as well as how he got to where he is today. Given his expertise in dentistry, you would think this was his lifelong passion, but in fact he took a winding route to get here. He worked in immunology research for a couple years, then transitioned into teaching high school biology, before finally moving into dentistry. As you’ll hear today, Charles believes that every dentist is capable of placing implants if they really want to. If this is an area that interests you, he recommends finding a beginning course from an instructor you like to learn more about the area. If you don’t feel ready after the end of that course, you can build from there. Once you’ve gotten your feet wet and want to take the next steps, look into The CD Schlesinger Group to learn more. If you’re further along in your career and ready for something new, you might want to get involved in teaching and education. As an expert in this himself, Charles offers several potential paths that someone at this stage could take. Tune into the episode to hear his recommendations! We’ll also chat about the importance of differentiating yourself and where Charles will be offering courses this year, and Charles will offer some closing words of encouragement. Today’s Guest: Charles Schlesinger, DDS on LinkedIn The CD Schlesinger Group In This Episode: [01:13] - Charles takes a moment to share the story of how he got into dentistry, which wasn’t his original intended field of work. [05:54] - We hear about Charles’ decision to branch out into his own practice, and how his career has progressed from there. [10:13] - A lot of people can probably relate to Charles’ story and path, Philip points out. [11:20] - One of the unique aspects of dentistry is that you have the ability to be a jack-of-all-trades but also pick and choose what you want to do, Charles explains. [13:18] - For people who are early in their implant dentistry career, where could somewhere learn more about implants? [20:02] - Philip seconds Charles’ recommendation to take a small course to see if implant dentistry is right for you. [22:12] - Charles offers advice for someone who’s taken the first step and has placed a couple dozen implants and wants to go to the next level. [29:40] - For someone who’s further along in their career and wants to look into getting involved with education, how could they get involved with that? [38:04] - Philip recommends finding what you’re passionate about, documenting those cases, and telling a story. [39:30] - Charles recommends finding something about what you do that differentiates you from everyone else. [41:26] - Where will Charles be teaching various courses in 2019? Through persistent effort and close collaborations they created a high-quality, optimized implant system. With a limited number of components, the Neoss Implant System has unique design features and a host of excellent advantages for everyone. This ingenuity lies in the patented implant design optimizing stability in all bone qualities and conditions and eliminating the need for separate one- or two-stage designs. The minimal platform concept utilizes only two implant platforms to support diameters in the range 3.25–6.5mm. This also greatly simplifies surgical and prosthetic instrumentation aiding communication within the team and increasing efficiently. I get about 5-10 messages a day from people asking me which implants to buy, which CBCT to use, which surgical guides to use and other questions. I thought possibly by setting up a group of general dentist friendly partnerships I could help introduce good products and organizations with people who would be a good fit. The partners that I would be introducing into this GPO, group purchasing organization, that we are starting would be organizations, labs, implant companies, and manufacturers that are all relevant to implant dentistry, and are friendly to use for the general dentist,. I was tired of seeing DSO‘s getting discounts on products and the general dentist still struggling to make overhead and struggle to find quality systems at a good price that were willing to teach and train general dentists and not just specialists. Join the Group Purchasing Organization The general dentist has to worry about the specialist groups and the DSO groups and I thought why not a group for the general dentists. I also want it to be objective and have it be non-specific to just one implant company or just one process so there could be multiple options available. I want to help link and partner with good organizations, implant manufacturers, labs, and other ancillary products that will help bring good value and create long-lasting connections for general dentist learning to place dental implants. Implantology can be an expensive field, whether with time away from your office taking CE, whether it’s the expense of the instrumentation and kits, whether it’s the expense of the increase overhead of products, or increased technological equipment like CTCT. I wanted to make sure the dentists that were serious about implants could put their time and money wisely into products and services that I could guarantee would work for them and then I could also show them how to integrate them into their practice successfully. I feel if I can save someone time and money and help them make introductions to companies while still providing a non-biased opinion that I could do some service for the implant community and so the group purchasing organization partner program has come from that idea. The program is going to be a yearly subscription of $100 per month or $1000 per year upfront which will then provide discounts on implant products, CE Courses, and other services that a dentist would need in order to run a successful implant business. In addition to that there will be upcoming webinars and CE opportunities outside of the initial concept. This will also allow me the ability to continue to refine and create more content and relevant aspects for learning and sharing. I hope to continue to further push the limits of implant dentistry for the general dentist while giving back to people looking to get into implant dentistry. Thanks for all the support you have given to dental implant practices so far and I hope the group purchasing organization will have some value towards you and help provide a missing link with you and your practice. Thanks, and best of luck. Philip Gordon Join the Group Purchasing Organization

The Neodent system is the market leader in Latin America and holds more than 56% of the Brazilian market share.  The system is known for its innovations, quality and technology. In Brazil, Neodent is a premium system, where we pay a premium price for it.  Here in US, due to the exchange rates, the system is offered in its premium quality but for a value price.   Technically, Neodent evolved much through the years. Like most systems, we started with the external hex connection and moved up to the internal hex one. But what makes us stand out the most is definitely our Morse taper connection. It offers a lot of clinical advantages, especially when placed as recommended, such as bone and bone crest maintenance (with maintenance of the gingival papillae), higher mechanical stability (less risks of prosthetic screws getting loosen), a virtually "bacteria free" interface and preservation of the biological width, with a proper biologic seal with the dental-gingival fibers attaching to our abutments. That means protection for your bone-implant interface, with a well-defined probing depth and therefore a natural barrier against the excess cement flowing into the sulcus, on your cement-retain restorations. That also reduces the risk of peri-implantitis, since our implant surfaces are never exposed and instead, are covered by bone, sealed by dental gingival fibers and with no bacterial flow through the connection gap.  Neodent also provides a hydrophilic surface called Acqua, which promotes more BIC in less time, improving the overall early osseointegration.  The exterior designs of our implants are meant for gripping and giving the opportunity of immediate load in different bone densities. Also, regular, short, narrow, cylindrical, tapered, hybrids, zygomatics... They are all offered through the system so that we can always solve our diverse range of clinical situations.
