On this episode of The Pastor's Office, Reverend Jonathan Mason speaks with Denise Clay about the Harris-Walz presidential campaign and then he speaks with State Rep. Rick Krajewski about eviction reform in Philadelphia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On today's episode host Conrad Benner is joined by Rick Krajewski. Krajewski is a State Representative running for his second term serving PA's 188th District. He is a progressive Democrat in a PA Congress which has Republicans in control of both chambers of the state legislature. As he comes to the end of his first two-year term and runs for his second, we discuss the obstacles and opportunities of working in this congress, especially over the last two years with the added challenges created by Covid. And we talk about his goals for a second term, one he'll likely serve if he beats his Primary challenger in the coming May 17th elections.
Donald Trump is the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice. Ten Republicans joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump. No, my representative was not one of them. As the days go by we find out that the head of the Capitol police lie, the FBI released a report ahead of the insurrection warning that there were indications that the Trump supporters were calling for “war.” And now the FBI is warning that State Capitol buildings may now be targets over the weekend. FBI investigators looking into Wednesday’s right-wing insurrection are starting to look at legislators who may have coordinated with organizers of the mob. Representative Aryanna Pressley confirmed that the panic buttons in her office were ripped out before the insurrection and Representative James Clyburn confirmed that his private office where he does most of his work was sacked leading to suspicions of an inside job. Conan the Barbarian releases a video calling Wednesday’s insurrection, “America’s Kristallnacht.” Parler is gone (for now) and the GOP is crying about it. James Comey - yes, THAT James Comey, is actually out there calling for Biden to pardon Trump. Yeah, that guy who helped hand Trump the presidency back in 2016. DC Hotel workers from UNITE HERE Local hint at a wildcat strike ahead of the inauguration to help stave off any repeat of last Wednesday’s insurrection. In a statement, the union said, “We are calling on hotels in the DC region to close ahead of inauguration, unless they are hosting security personnel. Any hotel that stays open must permit workers to stay home and/or leave the moment they feel unsafe.” Fast Food workers are calling for a nationwide strike on Monday, January 18, to urge the Biden administration to raise the minimum wage to at least $15/hour. It’s been another wild week for Pennsylvania State Senator Doug Mastriano WHYY reported that Senator Mastriano used $3,400 in campaign cash to pay for busses to take insurrectionists to Washington DC. Media Matters reported that Doug Mastriano frequently goes on Q Anon associated podcasts and in recent weeks called the effort to overturn the election a “death match with the Republican Party.” Mastriano is also calling on Trump supporters to stand-down this weekend as insurrectionists plan on rallying outside the Pennsylvania capitol this weekend and all of next week. In a facebook post, he stated: Please do not participate in rallies or protests over the next 10 days. “Let’s focus on praying for our nation during these troubling times.” Frank Scavo, a former congressional candidate from northeastern Pennsylvania, organized a bus trip from Old Forge to last week’s insurrection and was caught repeatedly lying about his involvement in the insurrection. First he told reporters he was nowhere near the capitol, then he told them that he was close to the capitol but didn’t go inside and now there is photographic evidence that he was inside the capitol during the insurrection. Pennsylvania Republicans move forward with their plans to gerrymander the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in response to Republicans losing three Supreme Court Seats in 2015. Republicans are using recent PA Supreme Court rulings during the 2020 election as excuses for their latest attack on the court. In happier news, State Senator Jim Brewster won his final court battle and is now seated. State Representative Elizabeth Fielder has been named the chair for the newly formed Progressive Policies for Working People subcommittee. The new subcommittee will be part of the Pennsylvania House Democratic Policy Committee and will give progressive lawmakers more of a legislative voice within the House Democratic Caucus. In more good news for state politics, the crew heading the Pennsylvania Legislative Climate Caucus is looking good. The Caucus will be Chaired by Rep. Danielle Friel Otten, D-Chester; the vice chair will be Rep. Nancy Guenst, D-Montgomery; and, Rep. Rick Krajewski, D-Philadelphia, will serve as Secretary. If you don’t know Nancy Guenst, we’ll tell you about the note she posted to her office door for potential insurrectionists. PASSHE Chancellor Greenstein has trouble maintaining the good-guy, Chancellor McDreamy schtick in a open Spotlight PA interview on Zoom last night. What are we doing with our “free time.” Free Will Brewing has some new releases. We'll give you the details in today's Last Call.
On today’s show, I welcome Rick Krajewski to the show. Rick is a candidate for State Representative in the 188th State House District in West Philadelphia. Rick has worked for criminal justice reform and access to public education. Since 2016, Rick has been an organizer with Reclaim Philadelphia, fighting to put working-class people at the forefront. In the 2017 general election, Rick led a team of 200 volunteers in our neighborhoods to elect Larry Krasner, the most progressive District Attorney in the country. Rick’s is running on a platform of a Dignified Education for All; Decarceration; Affordable Housing for All; Health Care for All; Ending the War on Drugs; Defending Workers Rights and the Right to Organize; and, a Green New Deal for Pennsylvania. Rick won the Democratic primary this past summer by a margin of nearly 20 points, defeating Rep. James Roebuck Jr., one of the longest-serving members of the PA State House and the ranking Democrat on the House Education Committee. It is no wonder that Rick earned an early endorsement from Bernie Sanders. Rick faces no Republican challenger in the general election, so he is all but assured to join the growing ranks of progressive state legislators including Summer Lee, Sara Innamorato, and Elizabeth Fiedler - PA’s own version of the Squad elected in 2018. A special shout out to Jonathan Mann who wrote our intro song, “There Are No People in the Future.” Check out all is great stuff on his YouTube page and follow him on Twitter @songadaymann Rick Krajewski links: Rick Krajewski's campaign site Twitter Facebook
Trump threatens to call out the military to suppress protests demanding justice for George Floyd and an end to run-away police violence. In a speech from the Rose Garden, Trump called protesters “terrorists.” In a call to the nation’s Governors, Trump urged them to crack down hard on protesters. In a surprise move, Trump told journalists that he has put U.S. Army General Mark Milley “in charge” of ending the protests. Former Defense Secretary General Jim Mattis - the guy that Trump used to love to call “Mad Dog” to boost his testosterone levels - issued a scathing rebuke of Trump’s desire to call out the military to “dominate” protesters. Mattis wrote, "Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens —much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside." George Bush came out after Trump this week. He beat Nancy Pelosi to the punch. Why? Oh, yeah, the Democrats are on vacation. Los Angeles mayor, Eric Garcetti, announced that the Los Angeles Police Department will see a budget cut between $100 and $150 million instead of an increase. The money from the LAPD cuts will be invested in communities of color instead. The city will invest in “jobs, education, and healing,” according to Mayor Garcetti. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the most prominent member of the White House COVID-19 task force, told the American Medical Association that the U.S. should have 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by the beginning of 2021. Protests to end police violence and systemic racism exploded across the state. Hundreds of people marched through small towns like Souderton, PA and thousands flooded the streets in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and other larger cities across the Commonwealth. This week showed that pigs can actually fly. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney took down the 2000 lb Frank Rizzo statue. In a huge win for Philadelphia progressive activists, Nikil Saval defeated Democratic Party establishment-backed candidate Larry Farnese in the primary for Pennsylvania’s First Senate District. Nikil Saval is the cofounder of Reclaim Philadelphia, a community activist, a DSA member, and an editor for N+1. Saval ran a campaign right out of the Bernie Sanders campaign platform and is now looking at a double-digit win of Farnese who has held the seat since 2009. Bernie Sanders pulled in 20% of the vote in Pennsylvania. But Nikil Saval was not the only big news. It looks like six other incumbents were shown their walking papers in Tuesday’s Primaries. Daylin Leach is behind by nearly twenty points to Amanda Cappelletti, a candidate endorsed by Elizabeth Warren. Summer Lee crushes her primary opponent Chris Roland by a 75-25 margin. It looks like the building trades owes Summer an apology for wasting over a hundred thousand dollars to run someone against her out of spite. Progressive Emily Kinkead looks like she is going to oust conservative Democrat Adam Ravenstahl in House District 20 in the Pittsburgh area. Ravenstahl has frequently voted with conservative Republicans, especially when it comes to restricting women’s access to abortion and necessary medical care. Rick Krajewski, a West Philadelphia organizer, is narrowly ahead of Jim Roebuck in PA House District 188. Roebuck has held the seat since 1985. Krajewski was backed by Bernie Sanders, the PA Chapter of the National Organization for Women, National DSA, Sunrise Philadelphia, and the AFT Local 2026 among a long list of endorsers. And as of today, all counties in Pennsylvania have moved into either the Green Phase or the Yellow Phase. Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Northampton, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties were the last counties to remain in the Red Phase. They move to Yellow today. Whitey’s on the Moon...OK, not the Moon, but the International Space Station. SpaceX and NASA successfully launched two astronauts to the ISS from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center last Saturday. It was the first crewed launch from U.S. soil since the Obama administration scrapped the Space Shuttle program in 2009. The fact the launch took place during some of the biggest civil rights uprisings in nearly a century has us relistening to some Gil Scott-Heron. Looks like the whole 2024 Moon settlement plan hit a bit of a setback as SpaceX’s Starship Prototype exploded during a static-fire test of the massive rocket’s engines. The Menzingers just released a new song, America Pt. 2. All proceeds from the song go to community bail funds. You can listen to and buy the song at bandcamp.com. And, while we’re at it, Bob Mould just released a new song called “American Crisis.” It show that the anger from Gen X runs deep. Thanks to my friend Stu Ross for sending me that. Free Will Brewing is opening up outdoor seating at their main Perkasie location and at Peddler’s Village tomorrow, Saturday, June 6. They had to push back today’s opening due to storms and flood warnings. They are turning a field next to the brewery into a beer garden with a pop-up bar, bathrooms, and sanitizing stations, in addition to our usual front yard space and courtyard. Free Will also has a new release for the first time in a while. This one is a collab with Imprint Beer Company. It’s the Strawberry Lemonade Radfahrer - They took their Cream Ale base and mixed it with some slightly tart lemonade before a hefty addition of strawberry purée to top the whole thing off. 3.9% ABV.

On the last show of the year AND the decade of the 2010s, Dodgers stats man Rick Krajewski surprising the Blue Heaven boys by popping in and talking hot stove, Hollywood lifestyles, and nostalgia from the last 10 years of Dodger baseball. On today's show: Mookie at what Price? Hollywood lifestyles Bellinger giveaway winner Dodgers All-Decade Team And More! The big news over the weekend came when Anthony Rendon fired oddball shots at his Anaheim press conference. This leads to wonder about what "Hollywood lifestyle" he thinks happens 30 miles away from Angel Stadium. In more hot stove news, Mad Bum is off the table as he took his talents to the desert. With the Dodgers' hypothetical back against the wall as free agents sign left and right, Brook wonders if we have to trade for David Price just to not go home alone. We announced the winner of our Cody Bellinger MVP collage giveaway, and let you know about a cool baseball book as a stocking stuffer. Next, we wrap up the decade by waxing nostalgic about our top 3 moments from the 2010s, and listing our Dodgers All-Decade team -- even Chicago native Rick Krajewski! Clint and Brook welcome Dodgers stats man Rick Krajewski back to the show as we chat about the struggle bus LA bullpen, and enjoy the Yeli v Belli NL MVP blood bath. Also on today's show: - The weird Philly series - Defensive issues with Pollock over Verdugo - MLB Trade SZN updates - Rick's personal first half highlights The Dodgers are 4-3 since the All-Star break after splitting a weird series in Philly. The bullpen busted out all of their greatest hits when it comes to struggling as the boys in blue limp back home. Plus we look at "plunk SZN" as the team got hit by a lot of pitches, and lost utility man Chris Taylor for the foreseeable future. We dig into some of the numbers surrounding the bullpen and wonder if Kenley Jansen can remodel his game after hall of famer Mariano Rivera later into his career. Plus, Joe Kelly has been better of late, but still not 100% ready for prime time. Corey Seager's post-IL slump is dispelled by Rick using the power of stats, and everyone has praise for future friend of the show Gavin Lux after a huge day in triple-A. The argument is made that Alex Verdugo should be in center over AJ Pollock, and that he should play every day (even with AJ hitting well). The Fun Stuff Next we look into how great the "Yeli vs Belli Blood Bath battle for NL MVP" is for baseball, and equate it to another great battle between superstars in MLB history. Clint argues that Bellinger has the edge thanks to his softball player pre-game cocktail. And finally, we give the floor to Rick as he regales us with his first half highlights, including Hyun-Jin Ryu, an 8 home run opening day, and Orel Hershiser. Learn more about your ad choices. In episode 4 the show focuses on the inequitable treatment and visibility of current and formerly incarcerated women in our institutions, organizing and conversations around mass liberation. In the first part of the episode Madusa Carter shares the third act of their play Mary’s Daughter: Memoir of an Artivist. The story is followed by an interview between Madusa Carter and Rick Krajewski on why women have not been centered in mass liberation organizing and how can change the narrative and prevent that eraser from continuing to happen.
Your one-stop Dodgers podcast shop for spring training and season previews and projections! Pitchers and catchers have reported and Blue Heaven is joined by Dodgers stats man -- "The Wiz" -- Rick Krajewski! Rick, along with Clint and Brook (welcome back!) look into stats on stats on stats for the upcoming season. Leading off, the question is asked, how can Manny Machado and Bryce Harper still be free agents? Of course, the big news since the last episode is that the Marlins finally traded all-star catcher JT Realmuto. While the Dodgers were mentioned as a landing spot all offseason, he was ultimately traded to the Phillies for a less than inspiring return. The question here is, did the Dodgers whiff, or was it the right call to hold on to 3 top prospects? With the chatter leaning toward catcher, we wonder if Russell Martin and Austin Barnes can be enough behind the dish in 2019. Our live stream audience wanted to know if AJ Pollock is enough, or if the team needed one more big bat. Act II Later in the show, Clint says that MLB clearly fixed its biggest problem when it changed the "disabled list" to the "injured list". Long live the DL! There's more on Max Muncy, and we play an audience participation on over/under PECOTA projections (with a real life baseball statistician!) This is a fun episode and undoubtedly something to look back on and compare at the end of the season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

An interview with three members of Reclaim Philadelphia, which emerged from the Bernie 2016 campaign in Philly and has since — in a remarkably short amount of time — played a key role in getting Larry Krasner elected District Attorney, effectively won a state legislative seat, and taken over two Democratic Wards in the city. Much of the debate on the Left over how to engage in electoral politics revolves around how to relate to the inside and outside of electoral politics as they currently exist: in other words, how to approach the unfortunate reality of the Democratic Party. Reclaim Philadelphia brings an outsider perspective and base to a hard-nosed insider game. Nikil Saval, Rick Krajewski, and Amanda Mcillmurray explain what they do and how they do it.Thanks to Verso Books. Peruse their huge collection of left-wing titles at www.versobooks.com!
