Alex Stone, Cincinnati Reds Pete "Charlie Hustle" Rose would have been a slam-dunk Hall of Famer if he never bet on baseball and been banned. The all-time MLB leader with 4,256 hits, Rose won three batting titles and was the 1973 NL MVP. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson had an all-time career batting average of .356 career -- the fourth highest in MLB history. But he was banned for life, along with seven of his teammates from the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" for throwing the World Series. Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg talk about players receiving threats, the Rockies ineptitude and other betting stories around Major League Baseball. In this episode of "The Inside Pitch" recorded on May 12, Scott Seidenberg and Josh Towers discuss the controversy surrounding Lance McCullers Jr., his disastrous return, and the broader implications of gambling culture in MLB. McCullers, in his second start after a two-year injury hiatus, surrendered seven runs in a 10-run first inning against the Reds, registering just one out, giving up three hits, three walks, and one home run. Post-game, McCullers and his family received death threats, which Towers attributed to the toxic intersection of sports betting and fan entitlement. Towers emphasized that no athlete intentionally underperforms and that threatening players over wagers is unacceptable. Seidenberg concurred, adding that the accessibility of players via social media exacerbates the issue. McCullers expressed frustration, noting he only wants to perform for the Astros while ensuring his family's safety. Shifting focus to live betting strategies, Seidenberg recounted betting the Astros team total over 3.5 runs during the blowout, leveraging the assumption that weak bullpen arms would enter early. Towers supported this approach, explaining that such scenarios often lead to high-scoring games due to less effective relievers being used and pitchers potentially experimenting with pitches under low-pressure conditions. They dissected Brady Singer's outing, noting he stuck to his sinker-slider mix, throwing 30 sinkers, 15 sliders, and four cutters, struggling post the 45-minute delay. The discussion broadened to emphasize that blowouts offer learning opportunities for pitchers, enabling them to test pitches in-game situations they'd avoid in tighter contests. Attention turned to the Rockies' collapse, particularly their 21-0 loss to the Padres, followed by Bud Black's firing. Towers criticized the Rockies' misuse of pitchers, particularly exposing young arms like Blaylock to overwhelming situations, likely contributing to organizational dysfunction. Betting-wise, the Rockies were highlighted as historically profitable to fade, with 30 of their 33 losses by multiple runs and a 5-29 record in first-five innings. Seidenberg recommended automatic daily run line fades against the Rockies. Broader betting trends were analyzed, including the Mets' 29-12 first-five innings under record and the Royals' similar 30-12 mark. The Mariners surprisingly leaned to the over. The conversation shifted to player performance futures. Kyle Schwarber's 46-game on-base streak, 14 home runs, and .404 OBP were celebrated, with Seidenberg suggesting profitable betting strategies targeting Schwarber to reach base safely in his first plate appearance using various app markets. Josh Towers and Seidenberg also agreed that Freddie Freeman's .367 average and league-best OPS made him undervalued at +1100 for the NL MVP, criticizing how consistently elite players are often overlooked in futures markets. In Cy Young discussions, Wheeler was favored in the NL at +700 due to his 58 innings, 2.95 ERA, and 0.91 WHIP, while Skubal and Eovaldi were highlighted in the AL. Hunter Brown was noted as a legitimate contender, given his cleaned-up mechanics and plus stuff. The Rookie of the Year race saw Jacob Wilson as AL favorite, while Luis Angel Acuna led the NL despite modest power numbers, with Towers skeptical of his long-term viability. They concluded by discussing rookie dark horses and emphasized the difficulty pitchers face sustaining excellence across a full season, all while promoting Pregame.com's latest offers. The New York Yankees made two shocking announcements that sent headlines throughout sports, and neither involved acquiring a player or firing someone. In a surprising turn of events, Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner sent out a memo saying that for the first time since his late father controlled the team, players would be allowed to sport “well-groomed beards” while on the roster.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss the surprising turn of events, as well as the other notable announcement that the team won't be playing Frank Sinatra's iconic “Theme from New York, New York” after losses. Justin Morganstein discusses some potential available free agent signings the Phillies could pursue and shares some early NL MVP and Cy Young Award odds.
In this new episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin reunite to discuss the number 5 in Rockies history. From the early days of the 2000s, the number was synonymous with the power-hitting outfielders thanks to Matt Holliday. From the moment he took over during his rookie season, he put on a power-hitting display in Colorado, playing a key role in their 2007 World Series run where he finished 2nd in the NL MVP voting and did in fact touch home plate in game 163. However, his rise to stardom made it unlikely for him to stay in Colorado and after the 2008 season the Rockies sent him to Oakland, receiving a talented young outfielder named Carlos Gonzalez. It took a hot minute for CarGo to get settled in, but he quickly established himself as an exciting and electric talent in and spent the next decade in purple. With the sweetest swing in baseball, this side of Ken Griffey Jr. CarGo dazzled fans with his elite defense, cannon of an arm, and incredible power. Unfortunately, his fall from grace at the tail end of his career is a sad tell to exam, but it doesn't diminish his incredible talent and place in Rockies history. Both were excellent talents in Colorado and a major reason why the number 5 is still out of rotation for the team. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Fantasy Baseball Live – November 24, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.We had a trade! The Royals traded Brady Singer to the Reds for Jonathan India and Joey Wiemer.a.Who does this free up for playing time in Cincinnati?b.Does Brady Singer's value go down moving to Cincinnati?c.Joey Weimer has alluring tools with plus speed and enough pop to suggest 15 to 20 home run pop. He's never been able to hit. Does he get a shot in Kansas City?2.The Nationals non-tender Kyle Finnegan, and he is now a free agent. I'm not sure I get this one. They couldn't trade him?a.Who do you like to get saves in Washington?3.The Rockies non-tender Brandon Rodgers. I guess this makes sense as he was due for a raise (estimated at $5.5 million), and let's face it, he's not that good, and there are plenty of options.a.Who do you think gets his playing time?4.Finally, the Blue Jays non-tender Jordan Romano. He was estimated to earn $8 million and it appears that the Jays didn't want to take the risk on whether he would return to form. Perhaps they don't like the medicals.a.Who do you like to get saves in Toronto?Segment 2 – Fantasy Questions of the NL East1.Atlanta Bravesa.Michael Harris went late in the second, early third round last year, which resulted in a 16/10 year and a batting average of .264. He's going about in the same spot (42 ADP). Do you like this spot for him.i.We will look at other players going around him to see who you preferb.Stat line for Austin Riley – HR, RBI and BA. He went 19 and 56 last season.i.His ADP is 30.82 and he's going as the third third baseman off the board. Too much or just about right?c.Is Marcel Ozuna turning into Nelson Cruz. He seems to be getting better with age. What are the odds he gets close to his 39/104 with a .302 batting average in 2025?d.What did you think of the trade for Griffin Canning? He has pretty good stuff with a plus change-up and slider, but his fastball gets crushed (.529 SLG). Can the Braves perform magic again here?i.I wrote this before he got non-tendered. I guess the answer is no. Weird though.e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.Miami Marlinsa.Connor Norby 2025 stats – HR, SB and BAb.Xavier Edwards stole 31 bases in 70 games last season but has no power. He did hit .328 but it was supported by a .398 BABIP. He's only SS eligible and is the #17 SS off the board. Any interest? If so, how will you make up for the lack of power?c.Deyvision De Los Santos – 2025 stats – AB, HR, and BAxd.Sandy Alcantara is going as the 69th pitcher off the board. Let's call it a number three starter. Is there sneaky value there or do you have to discount him because of the TJS until we know more?e.Is the Marlins closer currently on their roster?f.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)3.New York Metsa.Mark Vientos is going to cost you this season. His ADP is 99, and he's the 7th third baseman off the board. Good value or too expensive?i.He has average bat speed but hits the ball extremely hard (80th percentile). There is a ton of swing-and-miss in his game, and he has no speed. Is Jake Burger a good com?b.Does Tyronne Taylor start the season as the Met's starting center fielder?c.After finishing with 33 home runs and 29 stolen bases and runner up to Shohei Ohtani for NL MVP, why is Francisco Lindor going off the board as the 17th overall pick? Shouldn't he be higher or does this feel about right?d.Kodai Senga – 2025 stat line - IP, Ks and ERAe.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)
