Frank discusses his long career as a theater critic, starting in smaller newspapers and working his way up to larger publications like the Hartford Courant. He talks about the different roles he played as a journalist - feature writing, reviewing shows, and reporting on serious arts issues. We discuss how the landscape of celebrity interviews has shifted, with the rise of social media and "influencers" making it harder for traditional journalists to get in-depth, personal interviews. Frank reflects on the importance of building relationships with subjects and the craft of writing compelling profiles. Then, I ask Frank what he thinks of LGBTQ representation in theater and film, and he has so much to say! He discusses how the AIDS crisis impacted the arts and the importance of preserving LGBTQ history and mentoring younger generations. Frank then shares some of the projects he is excited to work on, including articles about the magazine After Dark and the writer Patrick Dennis. He also recommends several recent theater productions he has enjoyed, noting the enthusiastic younger audiences they are attracting. On a Move: Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing and a Native Son's Lifelong Battle for Justice by Mike Africa Jr. https://amzn.to/4cs15Zw The incredible story of MOVE, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985, killing 11 civilians—by one of the few people born into the organization, raised during the bombing's tumultuous aftermath, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. "As necessary and powerful as it is captivating." – Michael Harriot, New York Times bestselling author of Black AF History "Searing and urgent." – Bakari Sellers, New York Times bestselling author of My Vanishing Country and The Moment Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression. They drew their ideology from the Black Panther Party and pre-dated animal and environmental rights groups like PETA and Earth First. MOVE emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by the long, doomed war in Vietnam, Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance, and, eventually, President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs. MOVE members lived together in a collection of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of MOVE homes shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when MOVE was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. On a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing.

Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling that Biden will be coming to Philadelphia today to speak at Girard College, pointing out the irony of Biden speaking at this school while continually fighting against school choice, which would further provide opportunities to students in impoverished communities. Then, Dom offers an update on the Frank Rizzo statue, noting that he'll be attending a meeting to determine where to relocate the famous statue after the City was forced to release it via lawsuit. Then, Dom plays back clips from Phil Murphy, who appeared on local television in North Jersey and addressed the rash of teenage violence in shore towns that he's largely responsible for. Also, Dom plays back some unhinged clips from today's Morning Joe on MSNBC, and some ridiculous commentary by Jill Biden on today's The View. Then, Dom welcomes in Sea Isle City Mayor and Cape May County Commissioner Lenny Desiderio back onto the Dom Giordano Program to hear what can be done to control the situation in our shore towns after teenagers caused havoc in Wildwood, Ocean City, and other shore towns over Memorial Day weekend. Desiderio reveals that he has joined with multiple other Mayors to meet and determine how they can return power to their police officers, who've largely had their hands tied in dealing with juveniles after edicts set forth by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy in a reactionary move to the heightened awareness of social justice in the summer of 2020. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by updating the hush money trial in New York, playing back audio from Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Sebastian Gorka, who argued with a reporter who pointed out that Trump was part of the ruling class. This leads Dom into a conversation about the trial, explaining why he thinks the inevitable result will be a hung jury and dismissal due to shoddy testimony by anti-Trump witnesses Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen. Then, Dom brings in local attorney George Bochetto back onto the Dom Giordano Program, who brings some friends after news broke that the City of Philadelphia is prepared to settle a lawsuit with Frank L. Rizzo Monument Committee in the coming weeks, returning the Frank Rizzo statue to the people after ripping it off the steps of City Hall overnight years ago. Bochetto explains how this came about, noting the big win for Italians in Philadelphia who still have a devotion to the former Philadelphia Mayor. Then, Dom welcomes in Jody Della Barba, member of the Frank L. Rizzo Monument Committee, who previews where the statue will go once released. Also, Dom takes a call from longtime State Senator Vince Fumo, who, along with Bochetto, was one of the strongest proponents in returning the Rizzo statute to Philadelphians. If There Is No Struggle There Is No Progress: Black Politics in Twentieth-Century Philadelphia (Temple UP, 2022) provides an in-depth historical analysis of Philadelphia politics from the days of the Great Migration to the present. Philadelphia has long been a crucial site for the development of Black politics across the nation and this volume emphasizes how Black activists have long protested against police abuse, pushed for education reform, challenged job and housing discrimination, and put presidents in the White House. If There Is No Struggle There Is No Progress demonstrates that “Philadelphia must be central to any analysis of African American political history.” But politics means more than elected office and the book highlights political strategies such as the "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work" movement and the Double V campaign. It demonstrates how Black activism helped shift Philadelphia from the Republican machine to Democratic leaders in the 1950s and highlights the election of politicians like Robert N. C. Nix, Sr., the first African American representative from Philadelphia. The book highlights grassroots movements and the intersection of race, gender, class, and politics in the 1960s and shows how African Americans from the 1970s to the present challenged (white) Mayor Frank Rizzo and helped elect (Black) Mayors Wilson Goode, John Street, and Michael Nutter. Dean James Wolfinger (he/him/his) serves as dean of the School of Education at St. John's University in Queens, New York. Dr. Stanley Arnold (he/him/his) is an Associate Professor of American History at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Alyssa Ribeiro (she/her/hers) is the Henry A Logan, Sr, Professor of American History at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Yeah, yeah, it's been too long. …Usual Christmastime to-do list is kicking everyone's ass. Thankfully, Caleb from EAS in the ‘Springs kicked Hostus Maximus Justin and Gearhead Celebutant Mark's collective asses back into the studio (over sips at Bristol Brewery), because the Garage Hour is too much candy not to have some. Gearhead location experimentation ensued, fueled by Axe & Oak's Pike's Peak Hillclimb whiskey, 9mm and .22 Magnum, visits from Charlie (who actually commanded an Abrams tank), plus movies Caleb's got to watch (or he'll die). What's more to like: the F1 parade and ear-plugging weenies, tank movies, Saturday night coolers and van parties, a Glock 43 and an S&W with a billion rounds in the mag, plus Frank Rizzo, Saul Rosenberg and the Egyptian Magician.

Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing multiple stories unfolding both nationally and locally, first offering an update on the Frank Rizzo statue after Mayor Jim Kenney noted that it's sitting in secret location. The Dom continues, honing in on developments around the Hunter Biden situation, explaining again why he considers this story to be incredibly valid and relevant. After that, Dom delves into the continued antisemitism on college campuses, offering what he would do if he was a decision-maker in charge of handling the controversy involving UPenn's President, who failed to condemn calls for genocide of Jews in front of Congress. Then, Dom tells of his frustration with the National Republican Party, taking aim at Ronna McDaniel for scheduling two debates on CNN, explaining why it makes no strategic sense. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom leads off the Dom Giordano Program by offering some remembrance for former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, who would've celebrated his 103rd birthday yesterday. Also, Dom offers his preview of tonight's Phillies game, explaining why he's still confident despite the team (and the fans) poor showing in Game 6 last night. Then, Dom welcomes in attorney Joshua S. Bachner, who was recently written about in the Wall Street Journal, calling attention to a lawsuit he's representing that calls New Jersey's refusal to allow marijuana usage for their officers. First, Dan expresses his qualm with allowing officers to imbibe, explaining his concern that there is no test that he is aware of to instantly determine whether or not a person is actively high on marijuana. Then, Bachner tells Giordano how the other states with legal recreational marijuana has handled the issue, and explains why, if the substance is deemed legal, officers should be allowed to lawfully use marijuana.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: The Drive at 5 with Rich Zeoli and George Bochetto: Is Philadelphia's Christopher Columbus statue still in a box? Earlier this week, former President Donald Trump arrived in New York for a civil trial in which NY Attorney General Letitia James alleges that Trump-owned properties were dramatically, and fraudulently, over-valued on official documents. If Trump loses the case, he could be fined up to $250 million and prohibit him from doing business in New York moving forward. Prior to appearing before a New York judge for a civil fraud trial, former President Donald Trump addressed the press, explaining: “There was no crime. The crime is against me…They are trying to damage me, so I don't do as well in the election…This is an attempt to hurt me in an election…They waited until I was right in the middle of my campaign.” Trump accused NY Attorney General Letitia James of undervaluing his property for political reasons. In 2018, while campaigning to become Attorney General, James vowed to “sue” Donald Trump—providing evidence to Trump's claim that this is nothing more than a political vendetta. In a video that has recently resurfaced, New York Judge Arthur F. Engoron—the judge overseeing the civil fraud case involving Donald Trump—can be heard exclaiming: “I'm going to say something controversial…juries get it wrong a lot.” Is this further proof that Trump is not receiving a fair trial? What happened to Philadelphia's statue of former Mayor Frank Rizzo? George explains there is a chance it will be redisplayed in the future—though, when removing it, the city broke part of it. Earlier this week, the office of Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas announced: “The Secretary of Homeland Security has determined pursuant to law, that it is necessary to waive certain laws, regulations, and other legal requirements in order to ensure the expeditious construction of barriers and roads in the vicinity of the international land border in Starr County, Texas.” Despite his administration's determination that a border wall is necessary to help stifle unlawful migration, President Joe Biden told members of the press that he does not believe that border walls are effective. While defending the economy's performance, President Joe Biden accused the media of being too negative—and then bizarrely started talking about a boy saving dogs in a lake? What?!?! Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's policies are creating a culture of lawlessness. Would George Bochetto ever consider running for Mayor of Philadelphia?

A radical New York judge goes after Trump yet again on the valuation of his properties and businesses. Mark Weaver, former DOJ spokesman and constitutional attorney unpacks the legal madness. In 1983, the City of Philadelphia elects its first Black mayor as successor to Frank Rizzo. Woodrow Wilson Goode inherits Rizzo's fight against MOVE, but he also represents a moment of hope for Black Philadelphians who believe his election could be a harbinger of progress for a city beset with racial strife. Instead, Mayor Goode's administration unleashes a torrent of violence never before seen in American history in an effort to neutralize MOVE once and for all.
By the 1970s, both local and federal law enforcement have perfected a system to subvert and neutralize Black liberation movements across the United States. The civil rights movement has been uprooted, and Black Power is now here. In Philadelphia, the most famous police officer in America is elected mayor. Frank Rizzo's objective is to turn the city into centre stage in the nationwide fight against Black liberation activists. His power and influence will have deep implications for MOVE.

Todays episode features and interview with Frank Rizzo president of Cornerstone Realty as we talk about where the economy is going and what to do to prepare.
In this episode we interview Rasheda Alexander and Sterling Johnson. They are both participants in the struggle to defend the UC Townhomes, which residents have renamed the People's Townhomes in Philadelphia. This one of the most recent flashpoint struggles in Philadelphia in a long struggle to defend the neighborhoods Black Philadelphians were originally segregated into from the forces of gentrification and displacement. Sterling who is an organizer with Philadelphia Housing Action joined us previously in part 1 of our conversation on the book How We Stay Free to talk about the massive housing struggles for homeless people in Philadelphia in 2020. In this episode both Rasheda and Sterling offer personal context, overarching analysis, and talk about the issue of housing among other things as a racial justice issue, as a disability justice issue, and as an issue of justice for the elderly. Rasheda provides listeners with a concrete understanding of the liberatory potential of struggles like this, how they can transform relations among participants and be an example of abolition in practice. Sterling provides a great deal of analysis and context around the forces housing organizers have to fight, and advocates for a proliferation of encampments as a tactic in that struggle. It is important context to know that the protest camp, by which I mean basically the pallets and the tents, was removed by the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office this past Monday. When we had spoken on July 27th it was supposed to originally have been removed on that day. It was through organizing, resistance, and support from other groups in Philly including organized labor that the encampment lasted as long as it did. I'm going to play a quick clip of audio of Philadelphia's Sheriff who brands herself as a “social justice warrior” as she is removing the encampment. In the background you can hear residents and protesters chanting “we ain't goin' nowhere,” which has been a clarion call of the Save UC Townhomes movement. Even with the encampment's tents and barriers removed, the protest and the fight to Save UC Townhomes will continue. Please connect with them by following them on social media for more updates on how to support their struggle. And get involved in housing struggles in your own community. Even if it is not your home being impacted, these fights affect all of us. We'll include more links in the show notes, including an Opinion piece that came out in the Philly Inquirer after the demolition of the encampment: “We are still waiting for the Mayor's Office to respond to our demands. However, I am grateful for all of the support that our protest camp has received, and look forward to continuing our fight regardless of the court or the sheriff's decision to dismantle it. I cherish this community and I will continue to fight for it until I can't anymore.” That quote by Maria Lyles, who is a resident of UC Townhomes, sums up the perspectives from residents who have been struggling to defend their community in this fight. It also echoes much of Rasheda's sentiment in this conversation. An editors note, this episode was a live conversation much of which the interviewees were outside, or at UC Townhomes. So there were a couple parts that had to be clipped, and there are still some issues that remain in the audio, in all cases they are brief and clear up quickly.
