1. We are joined by the erudite playwright, musician, and scholar Ishmael Reed, Carla Blank, director, and an illustrious cast tospeak about The Shine Challenge online at The Nuyorican Poetry Cafe in New York. Reservations and further information can be found at www.nuyorican.org Reed says:  "In my grandmother's brother's house, the only painting on the wall was that of the Titanic. The sinking of the Titanic challenged the boasts of white supremacy. From the collective imagination of the Negro streets came the “toast” of “Shine,” who delivers a warning to the first- class passengers that the ship, thought to be invincible, was taking water. One might consider Shine to be the grassroots nomination for a member of the Black prophetic tradition." Ishmael Reed has lengthened the 40 or so lines of the typical Shine rap into a 100-page script in which he expands on the issues addressed in the original toast: race, class, immigration, engineering, and Edwardian morality by putting Shine on trial, in which he is both the accused and his own defense attorney.  One of the reasons Reed wrote the play was he found that members of three generations of Blacks had never heard the story of Shine. He calls the play, The Shine Challenge, 2024, because he expects that a future playwright will expand upon what he has accomplished. Directed by Carla Blank, The Shine Challenge, 2024 cast includes Jesse Bueno, Maurice Carlton, Caridad De La Luz, Emil Guillermo, Rome Neal, Ishmael Reed, Tennessee Reed, Laura Robards, Monisha Shiva, and Brian Simmons as Shine. 2. We close with an interview with Lola Hanif, womanist scholar, healer, activist, writer (3/8/2012).

"Artivist is a combination of Artist and Activism. I write about Bayard Rustin who was basically the right hand of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for many years. He was a gay Quaker from Pennsylvania and a black man, and there were a lot of issues with him working with Dr. King. Bayard was able to get all of the celebrities and everybody who wanted to support him at the March in Washington and made a lot of amazing changes. His art, his creativity, and in combination with the activism is what got the name Artivist. "  Carla Debbie Alleyne is a playwright, screenwriter, and director who received her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Film and Television and Dramatic Writing from New York University. Carla's play Hey, Little Walter was produced Off-Broadway at Playwright's Horizon as part of the Young Playwrights Festival when she was 16 years old.

Sustaining Creativity Podcast

Creativity through the lens of an Artivist (artist & environmentalist)"Creativity is to express myself, think a bit outside the box and to be uniquely me." Mariska is an artivist (artist & environmentalist) and the host of the Mama Earth Talk podcast. As a painter, sculpture and digital artist her art mediums include acrylic on canvas with recycled materials used in both canvases and sculptural work.  A few years ago, she started to experiment with trash️ in her artwork. She got curious about her new medium and before she knew it, she was spending hours researching how it affects the environment. This created a yearning within her to push her creativity and connect more with nature, and it was not long after that she found myself at the top of Kilimanjaro admiring the world from above. She decided to quit corporate life to focus on her new found passion for the planet, and as they say, the rest was history. In 2018 she took trash to the streets of the UAE and wore all the trash she generated for everyone to see. 30 days and 65 kg of waste later she had the country buzzing with questions about waste and wanting to know how they can reduce it. This was the start of the podcast, Mama Earth Talk. She has worked with many organisations globally, including Azraq, Nespresso, Costa and Dubai International Airport, to drive environmental and sustainable change in their organisations and communities. She inspire change through her artwork, podcasting, and public speaking. PAU Quintanajornet doesn‘t paint pictures. Pau creates worlds – open invitations to a journey into the beauty of Latin American influences and into the spheres of an artist, who with brushes, paint, ink, paper and wood, playfully turns her world inside out. The cleavage between cultures loosens up. From the friction between her Chilean roots and her German home she draws her own symbolism in bright colors and shapes which grows out of the ground like plants rising to the sky. Birds also occupy a large space in Pau‘s World: in her „cosmovision“ they symbolize free spirits of wisdom and peace, spreading their wings and coping with highs and lows of life.Born in Chile and raised in the former DDR, Pau moved to Berlin at the age of 15 to broaden her horizons and find a creative outlet. She studied communication-design and illustration at the FHTW before taking off to South America. In Valparaiso, Chile, she recharged her batteries and set the course for her future. Falling in love with the Urban Art Movement and Artivism, Pau started to create her first wall pieces down South.  Although she eventually returned to Germany, Pau would frequently revisit Latin America - her Motherland - her emotional home. During these returns, she might discover something new about her self or her art, socialize with other artists or improve her techniques. In the collective of the Artivists, Muralistas and Street Artists, Pau found birds of the same feather.Over the last couple of years Pau has participated in numerous festivals and art projects around the world. These travels and interactions with the people around helped her to find a deeper meaning in her work and get more sensitive for different global realties. Inspired by the words of Pablo Neruda, "The murals are the books of the people “ she started a long term art project called PROJECT WALLFLOWERS in 2013. Her work is found on walls in Egypt, Tunisia, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Germany, United States, China, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile … . While Pau‘s walls are on display in public spaces, they are created with the permission of the communities. Her interest lies in sharing her art with people, not creating notoriety for her self.Today Pau shares begins by telling us how art became the tool she was drawn to as a young person to help her emotionally as her family fled Chile as political refugees and the danger they faced prior to relocating to Germany. There's no doubt that while her childhood was traumatic, it set her up for some profound perspective on who she is and how she wants to live her life. We talked about her becoming an Artivista and how it was the first identity that she claimed as her own versus it being imposed on her by others. We talked about the masculine and the feminine and how she connected with her own inner manifestations of those as she navigated heartache and learned to cultivate love in all she does. Inspired by this quote: "You also learn that there are real priorities and imposed priorities. The beauty of this lifelong journey is that you get the tremendous opportunity to get to know the real you with all its flaws and all its magic. I gain stability when I feel centered and reflected in my work and with the people around me." We talk about how she established her own priorities and how she works to live them each day, including how this impacted her "Art World" and how she moves through the "Art Market." She shared about her work Project Wallflowers, the Blooming Seeds, and #staywithhumanity. We end with a quick share on how she takes care of herself with her active life and how sobremesas are a special part of that.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! "When we're talking about the power of The Arts -- the healing, the transformative powers -- we're really talking about the fact that we're human. We're humanizing the experience of others. So, we lead with empathy, and we lead in such a way that we put ourselves in someone else's shoes. It's more than meeting people for where they are --it's BEING where they are. It's getting inside of where they are . . . I can see new possibilities. NOW what can I do to change things?"Erika Lucille Ewing is a social impact entrepreneur and a multimedia creative, actor, activist, and fashion designer, "ARTIVIST."
