The post Beat Club: My Blue Heaven appeared first on NiTfm.
For the month of November, we're throwing a four-episode Friendsgiving celebration and inviting friends old and new to talk about some of their favorite films! We start with welcoming returning guest Frank Bonanno to discuss the Steve Martin/Rick Moranis mob movie My Blue Heaven, a de facto comedic sequel to Goodfellas (which came out a few weeks later). Writer Nora Ephron was married to Henry Hill biographer Nicholas Pileggi during the writing of Wiseguy and took real stories of Hill's time in witness protection as inspiration for her screenplay. We talk about the Goodfellas connections, the crazy casting process that at one point had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing mobster Vinnie Antonelli, Joan Cusack's excellent work as prosecutor Hannah Stubbs - who holds her own toe to toe with Martin's Antonelli and Moranis's Barney Coopersmith, the difficulties of finding good Italian food in certain parts of the country, and the idea of a heaven populated by mobsters in witness protection. Let's hit the dance floor and do the merengue--don't forget to overtip your server!

The heavy lifting has already been done for the Dodgers but several big questions remain the offseason. Will Clayton Kershaw return for his 17th season season in LA or will he look to move on with the Texas Rangers? Is the Dodger outfield good enough or should the front office seek an upgrade? Do we feel confident in James Outman? These questions and more with my friend and old Blue Heaven Podcast co-host Doug McKain on another edition of All Dodgers Live!

What a day for a podcast, huh? This week, Andrea asked Jodie to watch one of her favorite movies, Nora Ephron's technically-kind-of sequel to Goodfellas, 1990's My Blue Heaven. It stars Steve Martin as mafia-informant Vinnie Antonelli, and Rick Moranis as Barney Coopersmith, the FBI agent tasked with watching over him in witness protection, and it is a capital-R Romp. We talk about the real life informant who inspired both Goodfellas and My Blue Heaven, why the real antagonist in this movie is small town cops, and the subversive masculinity of Steve Martin.Next week, we're watching a favorite movie of both Jodie's dad and the great Weird Al Yankovic, Top Secret! It features Val Kilmer in his debut role as a rock and roll singer who becomes involved in a secret plot to rescue a scientist imprisoned in East Germany. You can watch it a few different places.Referenced in this episode:"The Campy Masculinity of Steve Martin" - plazmaburn"'My Blue Heaven,' Steve Martin's Comedic, Spiritual Sequel to 'Goodfellas'" - Jake RossenLast week, Jodie and I mentioned the found footage movie that preceded The Blair Witch Project and, more importantly, takes place in New Jersey, The Last Broadcast. We covered it this week over on the New Jersey Is the World podcast with Andrea's other co-host, Chris Gethard. You can listen to that on Patreon. If you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. It would be SO helpful if you gave our little new show a follow. This week we welcome long-time patrons of our show, Dean and Judy Gerber. They are joined by another patron of ours over on Buy Me A Coffee, who happens to be Dean's sister, Linda Meyers. Together they recap the 2023 Keys 100. All of them were so gracious with their time. It was so important to have them all here because, unlike a race with water stops, you have to provide your crew at this one. There are laughs, inspirational moments, and all kinds of tips for this epic race weekend. You can find Dean, Judy, and Linda here: Dean: @dwgerb Linda: @lindygmyers Judy: @sleepgal67 More information about Dean's new running project that he talked about in this episode is available at @florida_scrub_runner The nutrition and hydration options Dean used can be found here: hammernutrition.com EAT No recap would be complete for the Runcation Nation without discussing exploring and indulging in local food and beverage. Dean, Judy, and Linda talk about the fuel, food, and drinks Dean used along the course and the options he brought from hammernutrition.com. Before the race is the time to carb-load, right? Dean, Judy, and Linda talk about their pre-race meal at Cafe DiGiorgio's in Key Largo near the start of the race. For the garlic knots alone, I want to go. Dean and the crew highly recommend the staff and meals here if you consider this race weekend or a vacation to the Florida Keys. Find out more about this cafe at https://www.keylargo-cafelargo.com/. After the running and crewing the Keys 100, it was time to explore and indulge at Blue Heaven in Key West. Based on their review, I can't wait to get there and try the dishes they describe in this episode. Check out the menu here: https://blueheavenkw.com/ DRINK The 2023 Keys 100 has to be celebrated… all that running must make you thirsty, right? Dean said burgers and beer were at the post-race site, where they cheered other runners in after finishing. Thanks to Dean, Judy, and Linda for sharing our FIRST-EVER Runcation Recap. Congratulations on your accomplishment, too!! The Dodgers have many holes in their lineup and bench! We discuss what moves LA could potentially go for before the trade deadline!
