The media industry is having a rough decade. Newspapers are closing and local TV stations are being consolidated by distant owners. The advertising dollars that used to fund local journalism have mostly migrated to platforms that have no particular interest in what’s happening in your neighborhood. But, along with a number of other trends you can probably name, Baton Rouge isn’t following the rules. Brandon Foreman is CEO of Family Resource Group, a Baton Rouge company that has been connecting families to this community for over 30 years with its “Parents Magazine.” Today Family Resource Group publishes nine brands across seven markets — from Baton Rouge and New Orleans to Denver, Cincinnati, Birmingham and beyond — and has expanded well beyond print into digital campaigns, podcasts, and technology tools for advertisers. Brandon came to FRG through a somewhat unlikely route. His background is in technology — he ran a software company, a broadband internet provider in New Orleans, and launched several other ventures before arriving at the helm of a media company. He and his wife Amy, who is a publisher, received the 2024 Spaht Scholar Award from the East Baton Rouge Parish Library for their work championing literacy and education. When Brandon’s not running around taking care of business, he’s probably in the air. He’s a licensed pilot, and says the skies are where he does some of his best thinking. André Moreau literally needs no introduction. He's a celebrity. A Baton Rouge native and LSU graduate, Andre started his career as a fundraiser at a university, decided at 27 that wasn’t the right fit, walked into television, and spent the next 40-plus years anchoring the news. Andre was the lead sports anchor at WAFB for years, then left for Columbus, Detroit, Los Angeles and San Diego before coming home to Baton Rouge in 2008. He co-anchored the top-rated newscasts at WAFB with Donna Britt, then spent years as anchor and managing editor at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Andre has an Emmy, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters, and a Special Achievement Award for his coverage of Louisiana’s coastal crisis. He’s covered hurricanes, earthquakes, Stanley Cup parades, NBA championship parades, presidents, and yes, a pope. He retired from LPB in June 2023. By March 2025 he was back on the air at Louisiana First News. He says he missed being plugged in. He missed the scoop. Local media is under real pressure right now. Stations are being bought by companies that have never set foot in Louisiana. Print advertising keeps shrinking. The economic model that paid for local journalism for a century is still being worked out. Yet, here we are in Baton Rouge, bucking the trend. Brandon is betting that if you build media around a community rather than just broadcasting at it — events, partnerships, publications people actually want in their homes — the business will follow. Ce lundi, la très attendue Force de répression des gangs a débuté sa mission. « Des hommes de cette Force sont engagés sur le terrain à Port-au-Prince. Sur les réseaux sociaux, la FRG a publié des photos d'une patrouille à l'aéroport de Port-au-Prince », explique le journaliste. « Le déploiement de cette mission ne sera complet qu'en octobre prochain, avec à terme, 5.500 miitaires mobilisés », détaille-t-il encore. La saison des cyclones débute en Haïti. « Trois ouragans majeurs sont attendus », précise Alterpresse. La saison devrait être « normale ou légèrement inférieure à la normale », souligne Gotson Pierre. Mais « les autorités rappellent qu'un seul cyclone peut faire des victimes et des dommages matériels, d'autant qu'Haïti est dans une situation de forte vulnérabilité. »   Mexique : critiques et manifestations anti-FIFA Plus que quelques jours avant le début de la Coupe du monde de football. En Haïti, les élections, censées se tenir en août 2026, vont peut-être être reportées. L'instance chargée d'organiser le scrutin a indiqué que l'inscription des électeurs et l'enregistrement des candidats, qui devaient avoir lieu respectivement le 1er et le 13 avril, étaient repoussés. « Pour le moment, on ne sait pas si cela implique que les élections seront aussi décalées », explique Frantz Duval, rédacteur en chef du Nouvelliste. « En tout cas, officiellement, il est prévu qu'elles se tiennent cette année ». Par ailleurs, le quotidien a reçu la visite de Vladimir Paraison, le directeur général de la Police nationale haïtienne, et a abordé avec lui, la question des drones entre autres. « La PNH ne manipule pas de drones explosifs, nous a-t-il expliqué », raconte Frantz Duval. Sans nommer Vectus, la société d'Erik Princ, Vladimir Paraison insiste sur le fait que les policiers haïtiens ne disposent que de drones de surveillance. « Outre la PNH et la Force de répression des gangs (FRG) — avant celle-ci, la Mission multinationale d'appui à la sécurité (MMAS) —, le gouvernement a eu recours à des sociétés militaires privées pour tenter de contrecarrer les gangs. Interrogé pour savoir si ce sont les compagnies privées qui utilisent les drones, Vladimir Paraison a indiqué ne pas pouvoir répondre à leur place », peut-on lire dans Le Nouvelliste. Enfin, les footballeurs haïtiens qui se sont qualifiés pour le prochain Mondial vont finalement toucher une prime. « L'État a fait un chèque de 4 millions de dollars à la Fédération pour les récompenser et pour la préparation de la Coupe du monde », explique Frantz Duval.   En Argentine, les glaciers menacés La réforme de la loi dite « des glaciers » a été adoptée dans la nuit de jeudi à vendredi. En dix ans, plus de 300 personnes lesbiennes, gays et transsexuelles ont été tuées, ce qui en fait avec le Brésil, le Mexique et la Colombie, l'un des pays d'Amérique latine les plus violents contre cette population (proportionnellement à sa population de 10 millions d'habitants…). Dans ce pays encore conservateur, les communautés LGBTQI+ n'osent pas s'exposer en public. Alors que les premiers contingents de la nouvelle Force de répression de gangs (FRG) commencent à arriver en Haïti, les groupes armés continuent de semer la terreur. Dernier exemple en date : la commune de Marchand Dessalines, une ville de plus de 160 000 habitants, est actuellement occupée par les gangs. Un dossier de Ronel Paul. Depuis plus d'une semaine, la commune de Marchand-Dessalines, dans le département de l'Artibonite, est tombée sous le contrôle de gangs armés, notamment Gran Grif et Kokorat San Ras. Ces groupes criminels ont investi le centre-ville, multipliant pillages et incendies, sans intervention des forces de l'ordre. Le maire, Dunord Sileus, joint par Ronel Paul, décrit une situation « infernale », avec des habitants livrés à eux-mêmes, des maisons détruites et un bilan humain impossible à établir. La violence est telle que les corps des victimes ne peuvent même pas être récupérés. Certains étant laissés à l'abandon dans les rues. Certains habitants racontent la peur permanente face à des hommes lourdement armés, arrivés en convoi de voitures et de motos. Dans ce contexte, les autorités locales dénoncent l'inaction du gouvernement et s'inquiètent d'un possible calcul politique, alors que le pays est engagé dans un processus électoral. Pour certains responsables, l'alliance entre gangs pourrait viser à asseoir leur contrôle territorial tout en cherchant à se donner une image plus acceptable. Haïti est toujours sous le choc après le massacre commis par le gang Gran Grif dans le département de l'Artibonite ce week-end. Selon les Nations unies, au moins 70 personnes ont été tuées. C'est dans ce contexte que s'apprête à être déployée ce mois-ci, en avril 2026, la Force de Répression des Gangs (FRG), approuvée par les Nations unies. Une force internationale qui peut apporter un « soulagement à court terme », mais qui, à long terme, risque de prolonger ou même d'aggraver la crise sécuritaire, estime Jake Johnston, directeur de la recherche internationale au Center for Economic and Policy Research à Washington. Après la fin en octobre 2025 du mandat de la Mission multinationale d'appui à la sécurité (MMAS), composée principalement de policiers kényans, la FRG doit venir soutenir les forces de sécurité haïtiennes à partir de ce mois d'avril. Proposée par le Panama et les États-Unis et approuvée par le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU en septembre dernier, elle doit compter 5 500 membres, notamment des policiers et gendarmes venus du Tchad. Mieux dotée que la MMAS, la FRG peut-elle espérer obtenir de meilleurs résultats sur le terrain ? « Cette force est présentée comme plus meurtrière, capable de mener des opérations très musclées, mais on n'a pas entendu parler d'un plan global pour stabiliser réellement Haïti, estime Jake Johnston, directeur de la recherche internationale au Center for Economic and Policy Research à Washington. Les interventions étrangères peuvent apporter un soulagement à court terme, mais à long terme, elles engendrent souvent la crise même qu'elles prétendent résoudre », poursuit-il, sceptique, au micro de RFI. Porosité entre brigades d'auto-défense et gangs Pour le chercheur, la crise haïtienne ne peut se réduire à une question strictement sécuritaire. « Quand on parle d'instabilité en Haïti, il ne s'agit pas seulement de violence physique. Il faut s'attaquer aux causes profondes. [...] Les dernières élections, par exemple, ont enregistré moins de 20 % de participation et n'ont pas permis de rétablir la confiance  », souligne Jake Johnston, qui appelle à un « processus de paix » associant les citoyens, afin de tenter de « rétablir une forme de confiance » vis-à-vis des institutions. « Car la police haïtienne affirme avoir tué des milliers et des milliers de membres de gangs, mais la situation n'a cessé de se détériorer. Et près de 60 % de ces décès sont le fait de la police. Cela montre clairement que cette approche sécuritaire seule n'est pas la solution », tranche-t-il. L'émergence de groupes d'autodéfense civils constitue selon lui un motif d'inquiétude supplémentaire. « On comprend la volonté des citoyens de se protéger en l'absence de l'État, mais les frontières s'estompent dangereusement », rappelle‑t‑il, citant le cas récent d'un ancien chef de brigade ayant rejoint un gang impliqué dans le massacre dans l'Artibonite ce week-end. Ingérence des États‑Unis « Les États‑Unis agissent avant tout pour empêcher l'effondrement de l'État haïtien et la migration qui en découlerait. Ce sont des intérêts nationaux, pas une intervention neutre », affirme Jake Johnston, interrogé sur le rôle des États-Unis, qui ont soutenu publiquement le maintien au pouvoir du premier ministre de transition, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. À ses yeux, l'histoire montre que les interventions étrangères en Haïti (notamment les forces internationales) ont jusqu'ici davantage servi le pouvoir en place plutôt que conduit à engager des réformes. Artemis 2 : décollage imminent d'un vol habité vers la Lune Pour la première fois depuis plus de cinquante ans, des astronautes doivent s'envoler vers la Lune. La mission Artemis 2, deuxième étape du programme lunaire de la Nasa et première à embarquer un équipage, doit s'élancer ce mercredi dans le ciel de la Floride. Quatre astronautes doivent prendre place à bord de la capsule Orion pour un vol de dix jours autour de la Lune. Après de nombreux reports et difficultés techniques, la Nasa se montre confiante. La phase de remplissage de la fusée SLS, un lanceur de 100 mètres de haut, reste toutefois décisive. Plus de 1 000 tonnes de carburant doivent être chargées, une étape critique qui avait entraîné l'annulation des précédentes tentatives en février et mars derniers de l'année 2026, explique Simon Rozé, du service sciences et environnement de RFI. Une mission préparatoire avant un futur alunissage Artemis 2 n'a pas vocation à se poser sur la Lune. L'objectif est de la survoler afin de préparer un futur alunissage, prévu à ce stade pour 2028 avec Artemis 4. Pendant dix jours, l'équipage testera l'ensemble des systèmes de la capsule Orion et mènera plusieurs expériences scientifiques. L'enjeu symbolique est majeur : aucun humain ne s'est approché de la Lune depuis la mission Apollo 17, en 1972. Une responsabilité que l'équipage mesure pleinement. « On a pris l'habitude de la regarder comme un sujet d'étude… mais parfois, je fais un pas en arrière et je la regarde depuis mon jardin, et je me dis : “punaise, c'est quand même super loin”, a souligné l'astronaute canadien Jeremy Hansen. Tout le monde peut regarder la Lune avec une paire de jumelles. Et c'est important pour nous de comprendre comment d'autres cultures la considèrent. Quand nous rentrerons, nous pourrons rappeler que l'humanité partage la même Lune dans le ciel », confiait‑il récemment. Un voyage « pour l'humanité entière  » ? L'équipage — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch et Jeremy Hansen — a surnommé son véhicule « Integrity ». Un nom qui reflète, selon eux, la portée universelle de la mission. S'ils portent l'écusson de la Nasa, les astronautes insistent sur le fait qu'ils volent « pour l'humanité entière ». Mais la politique n'est jamais bien loin : le programme Artemis est aussi une manière pour les États-Unis de se positionner face à la Chine et pour Washington d'affirmer son leadership spatial face à Pékin. Sous pression des États-Unis, qui imposent un blocus énergétique sur l'île, le gouvernement cubain a annoncé ouvrir l'île aux investissements de membres de la diaspora dans le secteur privé. Une mesure dont l'impact est difficile à évaluer et qui est déjà critiquée par des économistes et par les exilés cubains. Cuba a de nouveau été totalement privée d'électricité lundi (16 mars 2026), pour la sixième fois en moins d'un an et demi. Ce même jour, sans en préciser les modalités, Donald Trump a affirmé devant la presse vouloir « prendre Cuba » : « C'est un pays en faillite. Ils n'ont pas d'argent. Ils n'ont pas de pétrole. Ils n'ont absolument rien. Je pense que Cuba est à bout de souffle. Toute ma vie, j'ai entendu parler des États-Unis et de Cuba. Quand les États-Unis vont-ils passer à l'action ? Je crois sincèrement que j'aurai l'honneur, l'immense honneur, de m'emparer de Cuba. D'une manière ou d'une autre. Que je la libère ou que je la prenne. Je pense que je peux en faire ce que je veux. C'est une nation très affaiblie en ce moment », a assuré le président des États-Unis, qui impose un blocus énergétique contre Cuba, en plus de l'embargo en vigueur depuis 1962. Vendredi (13 mars), le président cubain a confirmé des discussions avec Washington. Alors que la colère grandit sur l'île, le régime a dévoilé une mesure présentée comme une ouverture économique : la possibilité, pour les Cubains vivant à l'étranger, d'investir ou de créer des entreprises privées à Cuba. Cette annonce a été faite par le ministre du Commerce extérieur et de l'Investissement étranger, Oscar Perez-Oliva Fraga, sur la chaîne d'État Canal Caribe. La presse officielle parle d'une « actualisation du modèle économique » du pays et de « nouvelles opportunités pour les Cubains de l'étranger ». Mais au sein de la diaspora, le scepticisme domine. La chaîne états-unienne CNN estime que « cette proposition ne devrait guère apaiser les Cubains-Américains qui réclament davantage de libertés politiques, et une ouverture économique totale ». Dans le Miami Herald, le député républicain d'origine cubaine Carlos Gimenez lance : « Si vous êtes fous, allez-y, allez investir à Cuba », assurant que les dirigeants communistes sont « des voleurs qui veulent juste s'enrichir ». L'économiste Pedro Monreal, cité par 14ymedio, estime que cette réforme « pourrait créer de nouvelles inégalités au sein du secteur privé » entre résidents cubains et investisseurs de la diaspora. Les Cubains crient leur colère sur les murs du pays Malgré les risques d'arrestation, certains Cubains affichent leur mécontentement contre le pouvoir en place en écrivant sur les murs du pays. El Estornudo publie une série de photos de graffitis, prises ces derniers mois, sur lesquels on peut lire : « À bas la dictature de Díaz-Canel », ou encore « Liberté ». Un homme de 57 ans, originaire de l'est du pays, témoigne anonymement auprès du site d'information : « J'ai écrit tout seul, au petit matin, "Dictateurs" et "À bas le communisme". » Arrêté puis emprisonné, il est aujourd'hui en liberté conditionnelle et préfère donc taire son identité. D'après le site d'information indépendant, les forces de l'ordre arrivent de plus en plus tôt pour « photographier les messages », « relever les empreintes » et « recouvrir de chaux » les inscriptions avant que les habitants sortent de chez eux. Mais des messages anti-régime continuent d'apparaître « dans l'espace public à travers tout le pays », assure El Estornudo, qui conclut : « Ils peuvent repeindre les murs, mais la colère de ceux qui écrivent ne disparaîtra pas d'un trait de pinceau. » Chili : les limites du plan anti-immigration du nouveau président Le nouveau président d'extrême droite chilien José Antonio Kast s'est affiché lundi à la frontière avec le Pérou pour lancer son plan contre l'immigration irrégulière. Alors que son voisin argentin Javier Milei a beaucoup utilisé l'image de la tronçonneuse, José Antonio Kast choisit lui celle d'une pelleteuse. Devant les caméras de la presse et tandis qu'un fossé est en train d'être creusé au milieu du désert, sur les hauts plateaux des Andes, il a assuré vouloir « utiliser les pelleteuses pour [...] retrouver [notre] souveraineté, qui a été endommagée par l'immigration irrégulière ». Ces « barrières physiques », censées empêcher le passage de migrants à pied, doivent être construites en l'espace de trois mois et seront complétées par des radars et davantage de forces de l'ordre. En Haïti, l'hôpital universitaire La Paix est l'un des rares hôpitaux publics du pays à fonctionner encore correctement. Lorsqu'il a visité l'hôpital universitaire La Paix au début du mois, Le Nouvelliste a découvert un établissement métamorphosé. La population a commencé à s'entrainer pour pouvoir défendre le pays en cas d'attaque. Il a été emprisonné à Cuba après des décennies de lutte en faveur d'un changement démocratique et d'opposition au gouvernement communiste. C'est à la Une du site d'information 14ymedio.  Il y a quelques jours, le dissident de 55 ans avait annoncé avoir accepté de partir en exil face aux pressions exercées par les autorités. Lors d'une conférence de presse organisée à son arrivée en Floride, José Daniel Ferrer a dénoncé les conditions de détention dans son pays. « Les prisons de Cuba sont un enfer, Dante n'en a pas décrit de semblables », des propos cités par 14ymedio. L'opposant, drapé d'un drapeau cubain, a exprimé sa joie d'être libre mais aussi sa douleur de savoir que de nombreux prisonniers politiques se trouvent encore derrière les barreaux. Le Miami Herald décrit José Daniel Ferrer « affaibli par des années de détention ». Selon son frère, Luis Enrique Ferrer, des représentants du département d'État américain se sont rendus à Santiago de Cuba pour négocier sa libération. Mais Washington a démenti avoir formulé une demande officielle à La Havane, contrairement à ce qu'affirme le régime. D'ailleurs, dans la presse officielle cubaine, l'exil de l'opposant est présenté comme un abandon du pays, comme l'écrit Juventud Rebelde. Le journal se contente de publier le communiqué officiel du ministère cubain des Affaires étrangères, selon lequel Daniel Ferrer Garcia a quitté le pays à la suite d'une demande formelle du gouvernement américain. Le Miami Herald souligne que selon l'administration Trump, aucune concession n'a été faite. I'm thrilled to have Kevin Frater join me for the first episode of Season 7 of The RAG Podcast! I usually interview founders and leaders of recruitment firms on the show, but this week we're interviewing our first unemployed guest. Kevin is an absolute legend!He was part of the Frank Recruitment Group (FRG) for over 10 years and left in January of 2023. He started off in a role where he was doing client development, having spent four and a half years with the Allegis Group.He soon became the fixer. This guy would go to different offices and effectively turn them around.He started in London, then went to Singapore, and then he spent six years in Germany where he walked into a team of 12 recruiters and six years later left with over 180 staff, with one of the highest performing teams in FRG globally. He went through two events with the business where he realised some wealth and he finished up at the start of this year to take some time out before starting his next opportunity. At the behest of her military mentor, she joined the ROTC program at Bowie State University to continue her service. A survivor herself, Dr. Poe has taken her story to leaders and future generations.  She is the voice of the Glass Soldier podcast. She has been a featured guest on Never Alone, HUSH No More, Vet w/ a mic and on local radio stations here in D.C., Baltimore, Virginia area. She founded Glass Soldier in 2020, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating Sexual Assault and Harassment from the military force.  Her efforts are designed to enhance their core values of accountability, collaboration, and transparency.  She takes the Glass Soldier's mission to key decision makers for implementable change.  Glass Soldier's initial work was the development of a new reporting mechanism, centered around technology to combine social innovation for a real solution. Since inception it has taken on other initiatives for Veterans and our global society. The Dr. Diandra Poe Impact Center, opened on 18 December 2021 to provide a space for further research, resources for servicemembers and other local nonprofit organizations to collaborate.
