Katie Meyer and Stephen Caruso of Spotlight PA joined The Spark's journalist roundtable for a segment on Pennsylvania House and Senate Elections. Democrats' hold one seat margin in the House, while Republicans control the Senate by six seats. "Right now, the Senate is controlled by Republicans and the House is controlled by Democrats by just one vote. So, I mean, both of them are in play. Republicans have held the Senate for a very long time. So that is, I think, less likely. But the House could really go either way. And there are a number of races that Stephen in particular has been sort of laser focused on as the most important ones that could flip control. So it's very important. Right now, Pennsylvania's the only divided legislature in the country, I think, still. And we have a Democratic governor. So that makes it difficult for them to really do anything. And so this is going to be it's going to have a huge impact on Pennsylvanians, "Said Meyer. Caruso shared which districts are competitive in this years senate elections. "Democrats have been minority for a while, almost minus a small time in the 90s, basically since the 80s that they had they had a literally like a six month majority or so. So Republicans have controlled the chamber. And to flip it where Democrats have to win in Erie, a seat in Allegheny and a seat in central Pennsylvania and around Harrisburg. And they'd also have to hold one seat in Allegheny County, and that would just tie the chamber. That would basically give them a majority without getting in the legislative walker. But because of that, like, those are the main races. And I think it's just a hard path for Democrats to try and tie the chamber and get some control, "said Caruso. Pennsylvania public schools are set to get a $1.1 billion increase in funding -- as part of the recently-passed $47.7 billion state budget. But, some lawmakers and advocates say the figure falls short what's needed to fulfill a court mandate from last year. In this episode, my co-Host Diane Little and I interview PA State House Representative Chris Rabb (called Rep Rabb). This episode is a provides profound insight into the ethic of public service--for Rep Rabb insists on not being called a politician--because it's service, not a profession. His service spans, Agriculture & Rural Affairs, Commerce, Finance, Veterans affairs, and the Judiciary. Join us as we take a walk in his world of advocacy through, agrivoltaics, sustainability, electoral reform, innovation, and some political successes. Through it all Rep Rabb tells us he draws strength from his ancestors for his successes: renaming landmarks, prohibition from police officers assaulting people in custody, and a state interdepartmental interstate database that makes it harder for suspended police in one district to serve in another (among others). PA House Representative Christopher Rabb (known as Rep Rabb) is the most senior progressive state legislator in Pennsylvania, State Rep. Chris Rabb, the four-term incumbent for northwest Philadelphia's 200th legislative district, has dedicated his tenure to public service. His legislative priorities include taxing the excessively wealthy, repealing the death penalty, full and fair funding of public education, climate action, safer communities and raising the minimum wage to a true living wage. He has authored over 100 bills and resolutions, centering the most-impacted populations in his legislative work. Some of his boldest bills include his Fair Share Tax Plan, and a bill to transition Pennsylvania to 100% renewable energy by 2050.RepRabb is a co-founder of the Progressive Legislators Working Group, the antecedent to the PA Progressive Caucus on whose founding board he serves.ResourcesRep Rabb's websiteRep Rabb's track record accomplishmentsRep Rabb's instagramRep Rabb's twitterMore on AgrivoltaicsSupport the showTo recomend a guest contact us at: media@FierroConsultingllc.com To support Collective Power join our Patreon

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #187 Jim Stoker Firearms Owners Against Crime I love when the Olympic rings of the 2A community come into play and expands my circle. I was at the Rod of Iron Freedom Festival in Greely, PA, for may/be the 5th year in a row. I was running around with Rob Campbell & Amada Suffecool from Eye On The Target Radio. Amanda messaged me and said Klint Macro (RSWC #069) from Meet The Pressers & USCCA was here with Jim Stoker from Firearm Owners Against Crime and I needed to have Jim on the show. Jim and Klint were in western PA for an NRA event the night before. They drove hours to Greely so Jim could speak at the Rod of Iron event. Jim is now the president of Firearm Owners Against Crime (FOAC). Their long time president and founder, Kim Stolfer, stepped down due to health issues and passed away earlier this year. FOAC has been involved in Pennsylvania only gun issues since the 1990's, including reciprocity, castle doctrine, and licensing requirements. Jim has recently retired as a police officer. Before he took the role as president, he wanted to make sure that the FOAC board was ok with him taking the role. Since he's taken this position, there have been over 50 anti-gun bills from the PA House. The split between parties is only one vote. And the votes are mostly down party lines. He gets information every day about what is going in PA politics and writes about it in the FOAC newsletter. Even though PA has 850,000 hunters and is a very pro gun state, there's still work that needs to be done. Over the years, there's lots of compromising done to try and keep some rights for gun owners. Some in the community feel there's nothing they can do but compromise and they give up 5% of their rights everytime. FOAC tried to get Constitutional Carry, or permitless carry, passed though both houses, but the governor vetoed it. And the current governor won't sign it either. One of their fights is one that we all have: getting our 2A friends and gun owners to vote for the pro-Second Amendment candidates. A good friend likes to say “each one, reach one”, meaning if everyone that is a gun owner gets just one more person to become a gun owner, then we can not only make changes, but keep the rights we have and maybe get more of them back. Someone cannot hunt big game with a semi-automatic centerfire rifle in PA, even though it's legal, but the gaming commission said they cannot hunt with those rifles. The fall out of that is that people thinking that the Second Amendment is for hunting and not being able to hunt with a semi-auto centerfire rifle plays into the anti-gun agenda. If the 2A is about hunting and you can't hunt with an AR, then you don't need it, which is how they want that to play out. FOAC is out there educating the people that it isn't just about hunting. We have a great conversation about background checks, permitless carry, and what can be done to help get more people educated, trained, and voting. He brings up that 91% of law enforcement think citizens should have an AR 15. We also talk about how if people don't get involved in the 2A fight, then PA can become much more like MA. Coming from “occupied territory” of Massachusetts, it's interesting to see that even in Free America states, there's an ongoing battle to keep the rights they have. It's not nice knowing that there is an anti-gun agenda that is being worked on in states that have a fantastic reputation for being a supporter of our Rights. Favorite quotes: “The AG can pretty much change on a whim, where we're going to have reciprocity and where we're not.” “We don't affiliate Republican or Democrat. We affiliate pro-gun or anti-gun.” “I'm out there talking about common sense gun rights.” “The idea of universal background checks is not to keep the guns out of bad guys hands, they know bad guys are going to get them anyway. It's to make you register what you have so they can confiscate them down the road.” “Unfortunately in the sportsmans community there's too much of ‘someone else will get it'”. There's progress as Democratic legislators and the governor finalize a proposed NY government budget, which is full of policy changes as well. Jason McGuire of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms analyzes this week's news. Michael Geer of the Pennsylvania Family Institute explains the implications on HB300, which he calls dangerous legislation now advancing in the PA House. Find out more about governmental actions and current issues on “Capital Connection”, airing on the radio Fridays at noon and available 24/7 on Family Life's News-Podcasts page.

(8:16 - 14:21) The state of Pennsylvania is the only one in the country to not fund public defense; that responsibility falls to counties. Dom welcomes Pennsylvania Representative Joseph D'Orsie (R-York) onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a new bill he authored, HB179, which would ban ‘bias response teams' at Universities and limit high security fees for controversial speakers, also enabling somebody whose free speech rights have been infringed to take action against the University. D'Orsie explains what he hopes to accomplish with this bill, explaining the continued bias presented on University campuses and how these alleged ‘response teams' would not reduce but instead further increase bias, particularly against conservative ideals. In today's third hour, Dom first announces some incredible news for the city of Philadelphia, telling that the Pennsylvania House of Representatives have voted to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney for his role in the spike of Philadelphia's violence. Then, Dom welcomes in Sean Parnell, former candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania and friend of President Donald Trump, back onto the Dom Giordano Program. First, Dom gets Sean's thoughts on the decision by PA House members to impeach Krasner, telling why he thinks it's a great decision but asks why things have taken so long. Then, Sean offers his thoughts on the Pennsylvania races that were settled during last week's Election Day, telling what he would've done differently if he were the Republican nominee in a matchup against John Fetterman. After that, Dom welcomes in State Representative Martina White, who helped launch the investigative probe into Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and was an instrumental part in the impeachment process, to discuss the vote by House members to impeach Krasner. Martina shows some emotion while thanking her colleagues who really helped to move this through the Statehouse, laying forth what it took for her to take upon such an effort. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss what he's been doing in the City of Chester to reduce violent crime by up to 60%. First, Giordano and Stollsteimer discuss the methodology behind the drop in crime, discussing in-depth the ‘carrot and stick' approach of focused deterrence employed by officials in Chester to cut down on a burgeoning criminal element. Then, Stollsteimer comments on the strength of multiple folds of government working together, telling how it becomes a force multiplier when you bring multiple agencies together to formulate safety. Then, Dom provides a bleak update on the continued push to impeach Larry Krasner, revealing the results of a report put together by a Select Committee that does not suggest impeachment, which Dom tells is due to a fear of precedent. This infuriates both Dom and Dan, explaining what this means for the city of Philadelphia, with Dom holding Republican staties accountable for their cowardice in not proceeding with an impeachment vote. Then, during Dan Time with Dom, Producer Dan takes listeners through the celebrations that came after the Phillies win to advance to the World Series. (Photo by Scott Heins/Getty Images)
