Pennsylvania is one of the few states with a split legislature, which makes it extra hard for a bill to become law. The Democratic-controlled House recently passed a whole slew of bills, including ones to gradually raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15, require data centers to give more information to the state, and codify same-sex marriage. But do any of these proposals stand a chance in the Republican-controlled state Senate? Host Megan Harris and City Cast Philly's Trenae Nuri are turning to Ian Karbal, government reporter for the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, to get the details about what the relationship between PA's House and Senate look like and where these ideas might land. As the federal government shutdown continues, State Treasurer Stacy Garrity says she could loan the state money to cover food-stamp benefits for 2 million Pennsylvanians. Iron Mike is lobbying for recreational marijuana use in Pennsylvania. Another opportunity for Pennsylvania hunters opens Saturday. A family in Bellefonte, Centre County recently got a big treat. And this Halloween the news is out on national television. Their historic home beside Union Cemetery was chosen for a renovation on the HGTV show Scariest House in America. Many musicians write songs about love, heartbreak or life on the road. But there's a Central Pennsylvania band that sings about slapshots, breakaways and cross checks. Immigration advocates and union representatives rallied in downtown Pittsburgh this week. Demonstrators were showing solidarity with those in Los Angeles, by protesting the deportation of immigrants. The Pennsylvania state House has voted to raise the minimum wage on a county-by-county basis. We explain how the plan would work. More than 400 young people in Pittsburgh are being dropped from a federal program that provides free job training and education. Many youth are unsure of their next moves. Coyotes, foxes and crows are already fair game for Pennsylvania hunters on Sundays. But hunters may soon be allowed to chase deer, turkey and bear on all in-season Sundays as well. State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding stopped at the Waltz Estate and Winery and Family Farm in Manheim, Lancaster County earlier this week. He announced an investment of over $224,000 in Agriculture Promotion Grants. Opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration are set to rally in nearly 2,000 cities and towns this weekend, including dozens of locations across Pennsylvania. Rallies are set for Harrisburg, Lancaster, Carlisle, York, Gettysburg and Chambersburg. The No Kings Day of Defiance protests will happen during the military parade in Washington on Saturday for the Army’s 250th anniversary — which coincides with Trump’s birthday. WITF's Jordan Wilkie explains Pennsylvania’s senators are split on support for President Donald Trump’s budget bill due to its reduction in social safety net programs. We hear from both Sen. Dave McCormick and Sen. John Fetterman. State Democratic leaders are urging their Republican colleagues to oppose Donald Trump’s federal spending bill, warning the plan could hurt Pennsylvanians. We hear from State Senate leader Jay Costa and emergency physician and PA House member Arvind Venkat. The Harrisburg School District is set to exit receivership. Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education Carrie Rowe made the announcement Tuesday, calling it an historic milestone, since Harrisburg is the first Pennsylvania district to ever emerge from receivership. The district was first put under state control in 2019 in order to improve its finances and academic results. Harrisburg's former Bishop McDevitt High School is headed to sheriff’s sale this summer due to failed mortgage payments. That sale is slated for July 17th at the Dauphin County Administration Building. According to Dauphin County court documents, owner of the school's holding company, Jeremy Hunter, failed to pay off debt from two mortgage loans... totaling $2.2 million. An Ephrata man facing a 30-day sentence for disorderly conduct has now been charged with vandalizing an American flag outside a Lancaster County magisterial district judge's office. Katie Meyer and Stephen Caruso of Spotlight PA joined The Spark's journalist roundtable for a segment on Pennsylvania House and Senate Elections. Democrats' hold one seat margin in the House, while Republicans control the Senate by six seats. "Right now, the Senate is controlled by Republicans and the House is controlled by Democrats by just one vote. So, I mean, both of them are in play. Republicans have held the Senate for a very long time. So that is, I think, less likely. But the House could really go either way. And there are a number of races that Stephen in particular has been sort of laser focused on as the most important ones that could flip control. So it's very important. Right now, Pennsylvania's the only divided legislature in the country, I think, still. And we have a Democratic governor. So that makes it difficult for them to really do anything. And so this is going to be it's going to have a huge impact on Pennsylvanians, "Said Meyer. Caruso shared which districts are competitive in this years senate elections. "Democrats have been minority for a while, almost minus a small time in the 90s, basically since the 80s that they had they had a literally like a six month majority or so. So Republicans have controlled the chamber. And to flip it where Democrats have to win in Erie, a seat in Allegheny and a seat in central Pennsylvania and around Harrisburg. And they'd also have to hold one seat in Allegheny County, and that would just tie the chamber. That would basically give them a majority without getting in the legislative walker. But because of that, like, those are the main races. And I think it's just a hard path for Democrats to try and tie the chamber and get some control, "said Caruso.    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, my co-Host Diane Little and I interview PA State House Representative Chris Rabb (called Rep Rabb). This episode is a provides profound insight into the ethic of public service--for Rep Rabb insists on not being called a politician--because it's service, not a profession. His service spans, Agriculture & Rural Affairs, Commerce, Finance,  Veterans affairs, and the Judiciary. Join us as we take a walk in his world of advocacy through, agrivoltaics, sustainability, electoral reform, innovation, and some political successes. Through it all Rep Rabb tells us he draws strength from his ancestors for his successes: renaming landmarks, prohibition from police officers assaulting people in custody, and a state interdepartmental interstate database that makes it harder for suspended police in one district to serve in another (among others). PA House Representative Christopher Rabb (known as Rep Rabb) is the most senior progressive state legislator in Pennsylvania, State Rep. Chris Rabb, the four-term incumbent for northwest Philadelphia's 200th legislative district, has dedicated his tenure to public service. His legislative priorities include taxing the excessively wealthy, repealing the death penalty, full and fair funding of public education, climate action, safer communities and raising the minimum wage to a true living wage. He has authored over 100 bills and resolutions, centering the most-impacted populations in his legislative work. Some of his boldest bills include his Fair Share Tax Plan, and a bill to transition Pennsylvania to 100% renewable energy by 2050.RepRabb is a co-founder of the Progressive Legislators Working Group, the antecedent to the PA Progressive Caucus on whose founding board he serves.ResourcesRep Rabb's websiteRep Rabb's track record accomplishmentsRep Rabb's instagramRep Rabb's twitterMore on AgrivoltaicsSupport the showTo recomend a guest contact us at: media@FierroConsultingllc.com To support Collective Power join our Patreon

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #187  Jim Stoker Firearms Owners Against Crime   I love when the Olympic rings of the 2A community  come into play and expands my circle. I was at the Rod of Iron Freedom Festival in Greely, PA, for may/be the 5th year in a row. I was running around with Rob Campbell & Amada Suffecool from Eye On The Target Radio. Amanda messaged me and said Klint Macro (RSWC #069) from Meet The Pressers & USCCA was here with Jim Stoker from Firearm Owners Against Crime and I needed to have Jim on the show. Jim and Klint were in western PA for an NRA event the night before. They drove hours to Greely so Jim could speak at the Rod of Iron event.    Jim is now the president of Firearm Owners Against Crime (FOAC). Their long time president and founder, Kim Stolfer, stepped down due to health issues and passed away earlier this year. FOAC has been involved in Pennsylvania only gun issues since the 1990's, including reciprocity, castle doctrine, and licensing requirements.  Jim has recently retired as a police officer. Before he took the role as president, he wanted to make sure that the FOAC board was ok with him taking the role. Since he's taken this position, there have been over 50 anti-gun bills from the PA House. The split between parties is only one vote. And the votes are mostly down party lines. He gets information every day about what is going in PA politics and writes about it in the FOAC newsletter.   Even though PA has 850,000 hunters and is a very pro gun state, there's still work that needs to be done. Over the years, there's lots of compromising done to try and keep some rights for gun owners. Some in the community feel there's nothing they can do but compromise and they give up 5% of their rights everytime. FOAC tried to get Constitutional Carry, or permitless carry, passed though both houses, but the governor vetoed it. And the current governor won't sign it either.    One of their fights is one that we all have: getting our 2A friends and gun owners to vote for the pro-Second Amendment candidates. A good friend likes to say “each one, reach one”, meaning if everyone that is a gun owner gets just one more person to become a gun owner, then we can not only make changes, but keep the rights we have and maybe get more of them back.    Someone cannot hunt big game with a semi-automatic centerfire rifle in PA, even though it's legal, but the gaming commission said they cannot hunt with those rifles. The fall out of that is that people thinking that the Second Amendment is for hunting and not being able to hunt with a semi-auto centerfire rifle plays into the anti-gun agenda. If the 2A is about hunting and you can't hunt with an AR, then you don't need it, which is how they want that to play out. FOAC is out there educating the people that it isn't just about hunting.    We have a great conversation about  background checks, permitless carry, and what can be done to help get more people educated, trained, and voting. He brings up that 91% of law enforcement think citizens should have an AR 15. We also talk about how if people don't get involved in the 2A fight, then PA can become much more like MA.    Coming from “occupied territory” of Massachusetts, it's interesting to see that even in Free America states, there's an ongoing battle to keep the rights they have. It's not nice knowing that there is an anti-gun agenda that is being worked on in states that have a fantastic reputation for being a supporter of our Rights.    Favorite quotes:  “The AG can pretty much change on a whim, where we're going to have reciprocity and where we're not.” “We don't affiliate Republican or Democrat. We affiliate pro-gun or anti-gun.” “I'm out there talking about common sense gun rights.” “The idea of universal background checks is not to keep the guns out of bad guys hands, they know bad guys are going to get them anyway. It's to make you register what you have so they can confiscate them down the road.” “Unfortunately in the sportsmans community there's too much of ‘someone else will get it'”.   FOAC Website https://foac-pac.org/   Firearm Owners Against Crime, Institute for Legal, Legislative and Educational Action https://foac-illea.org/   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/foacpac   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/foacpac/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun    Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC   SABRE Red Pepper Spray  https://lddy.no/1iq1n   Or listen on: iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565
