When considering the body of work and legacy of Ernest Hemingway, one might ask, what has not been written? Author Wylie McLallen draws on family connections and insights for his two-volume biography, available on the Oxford Southern imprint of Sunbury Press Books. "Unbridled Dreamer: Hemingway and the Rise of Modern Literature" looks at Hemingway's early life, his relationship with his family (partially through the eyes of McLallen's grandparents), and the influence Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound would have on Hemingway. In Volume Two, "A Man of Modern Letters," McLallen continues with Hemingway's role in the Modern Movement of literature. Growing up in Memphis, Wylie McLallen degreed in History and English at the University of Tennesse, and studied under renowned professor, Dr. Robert Drake. In addition to his works on Hemingway, McLallen is the author of "Tigers By the River," about the early years of professional football and one of the first professional super-teams. He lives with his wife, Nickey Bayne in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a model for helping people who have serious mental illness find employment. There is a good deal of evidence showing the model’s success, but less is known about the model’s effectiveness with those who have other types of disabilities and health conditions, such as physical disabilities or less severe types of mental illness. Between 2016 and 2018, MDRC led an evaluation of Breaking Barriers, a program in San Diego County that implemented the IPS model. Breaking Barriers served individuals who had a wide range of disabilities, not only serious mental illness. An initial analysis of data found that Breaking Barriers’ IPS services did not have an effect on employment outcomes. With funding from the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, MDRC will be conducting additional analyses of Breaking Barriers, as part of the Building Evidence on Employment Strategies for Low-Income Families (BEES) project. In this episode, Leigh Parise talks to Robert Drake, one of the developers of the IPS model and the vice president of the IPS Employment Center at the Rockville Institute, and Lily Freedman, a member of the MDRC evaluation team, about the IPS model, Breaking Barriers implementation, and the further analysis to be done under BEES.

We're really sorry we missed our normal publication time this month! Car trouble impeded our progress. But we're back on track now! EDIT: We forgot the link to the actual audio! It's here now! Those of you looking for it can find it now! [esplayer url = "http://traffic.libsyn.com/artc/ARTC163-Rats02.mp3" width = "80" height = "20" title = "The Rats in the Walls-LIVE part 2 of 4"] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Tony Fuller practices breaking some kneecaps in case this ever happens again.[/caption] This month we continue with The Rats in the Walls from our 2012 performance. With music by The Ghosts Project, it was a really creepy experience. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="332"] Robert Drake is really creeped out.[/caption] The creepiness was enhanced by the lighting wizardry of Robert Drake. We don't always have the luxury of special lighting at our live shows. At most of our convention appearances we usually just have the ballroom lights of the room we're performing in, so being able to do a show at the Academy Theatre is a real treat. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Probably should have saved the fisheye lens for The Shadow Over Innsmouth[/caption] And don't forget, you can get this performance at a much higher audio quality from Bandcamp!
It was 150 years ago this week that Brattleboro's Overseer of the Poor signed an Indentured Service contract with a farmer in Dover for the services of a ten year old boy named Robert Drake. That's right! In 1866, one year after the Civil War ended, and 4 months after the United States Congress abolished slavery, a ten year old boy from Brattleboro was made an indentured servant until he reached his 21st birthday. Here's the story...
