Why does your brain go offline when you need it most? You're not broken. You're not weak. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it evolved to do — it's freezing. In this episode of The Somatic Frequency, we explore the freeze response: the biological mechanism that shuts down clear thinking under pressure. Not from a mindset perspective — from the body.We trace what happens in your nervous system when cortisol spikes, why cognitive function collapses, and — most importantly — what you can do about it.You'll learn:• The polyvagal science behind the freeze response• Why "thinking your way out" makes it worse• A real case study of someone who learned to thaw the freeze in real time• A brief guided practice to begin rewiring the responseAnd if you'd like to go deeper — the 3-Day Reset is yours to download free. Three audios that build positive somatic momentum. Drop your email. The three audios land in your inbox. No spam. No upsell on day two. Just three audios and a starting point.Next episode: Thawing the Freeze — a guided somatic session for clarity under pressure. And remember, you don't have to chase anything. You just have to let your body know it's already here.

Lakes are freezing later, thawing earlier and experiencing dramatic temperature swings in between. And all that throws off the delicate balance of life below the surface. Sir Keir Starmer described his recent trip to China as a chance to end the ‘ice age' in the two countries' ties and build a more ‘sophisticated' relationship. But despite the announcement of visa free-travel to China for British visitors, and the lifting of sanctions on six British MPs and peers, Starmer has been criticised by political opponents for failing to secure the release of publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai, recently found guilty of sedition and national security offences in Hong Kong. This follows controversy over the approval of China's new embassy in the City of London, and concerns about alleged Chinese espionage and the potential security risks of Chinese technology. Professor Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute, and Jonathan Fenby, former editor of the Observer newspaper and Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, and author of The Penguin History of Modern China, discuss where Britain stands in its relations with an increasingly powerful China — and the significance of President Xi Jinping's assertion that when it comes to his country, the UK needs to ‘see the entire elephant'.Photo credit: Simon Dawson / No 10 Downing StreetFor information about the SOAS China Institute Corporate Membership scheme, please contact SCI director Steve Tsang: steve.tsang@soas.ac.uk ________________________________________The views and opinions expressed on this podcast are those of the speakers and are not necessarily those of the SOAS China Institute.________________________________________SOAS China Institute (SCI) SCI Blog SCI on X SCI on LinkedIn SCI on Facebook SCI on Instagram ________________________________________Music credit: Sappheiros / CC BY 3.0

Ignition switch: From sparking lineups with 'Leadoff Man' author to thawing a chilly Hot Stove

A discussion the Cardinals and a chilly Hot Stove eventually ignites with this completely unrelated question: How far into your list of the best players in the history of Major League Baseball do you get before mentioning Rickey Henderson? He's the all-time leader in runs, he's the greatest leadoff hitter in the game's history, and he almost lapped everyone but Lou Brock when it comes to career stolen bases.  The name of the game is scoring runs, and few (if any) did it better than Henderson. That's part of the discussion with Matt Snyder, CBS sports writer and author of the new book, "The Leadoff Man: The history of, the evolution of, and fun with the greatest catalyst in sports." (The book is available here.) In his book, Snyder chronicles the changing nature of the leadoff spot, from the speedy contact hitters of yore to the bashers and mashers of the modern game, from the tradition of putting infielder there regardless of their ability to get on base to the analytics of prioritizing the most at-bats for the player who makes the fewest outs. Henderson leads the way with a style of play that was both ahead of his peers and ahead of its time. At about the 23-minute mark, the conversation speeds from leading men to discussing the current offseason and the Cardinals' willingness to trade their leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. The Hot Stove has been sluggish, even stagnant. And that prompts an impromptu suggestion for how to spur deals during the winter meetings with tools already present in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. No cap needed. Although talk about a cap is going to dominate the next 11 months, and that is where the podcast hurries toward its conclusion by describing how it's not the tycoon-like Dodgers that signal the lack of competitive balance and economic concerns about the game. The Cardinals could be the canary. To which, Snyder flips the question: How deep into a list of the most recognizable baseball teams does one get before naming the Cardinals? As the holiday season approaches, families gather around tables filled with delicious food and festive cheer. However, amidst the laughter and celebration, food safety often takes a back seat—until someone gets sick. In this episode of "The Valley Today," host Janet Michael talks with Amanda Johnson, a food, nutrition, and health extension agent, to discuss how you can keep your holiday meals both tasty and safe. Thawing the Turkey: Plan Ahead for Safety Amanda wastes no time addressing one of the most common holiday pitfalls: thawing the turkey. She urges listeners to plan ahead, explaining that the safest way to thaw a turkey is in the refrigerator, allowing one to five days depending on the bird's size. If you find yourself in a pinch, Amanda recommends the cold water method, but she emphasizes the importance of changing the water every 30 minutes to prevent bacteria from multiplying. She also cautions against contaminating your sink and reminds everyone to sanitize thoroughly after handling raw poultry. Kitchen Hygiene: Don't Spread the Bacteria Next, the conversation shifts to kitchen hygiene. Amanda debunks the myth that washing your turkey under running water makes it cleaner. In reality, this practice spreads bacteria around your kitchen. Instead, she suggests patting the turkey dry with a paper towel and focusing on cooking it to the proper temperature. Janet and Amanda agree that sanitizing surfaces, washing hands for at least 20 seconds, and using separate cutting boards for raw and ready-to-eat foods are non-negotiable steps for a safe kitchen. Cooking and Storing: Timing Is Everything Once the turkey is in the oven, Amanda stresses the importance of cooking it to an internal temperature of 165°F, checking multiple spots including the breast, thigh, and wing. She advises against stuffing the bird, as the internal cavity can harbor dangerous bacteria. After the meal, Amanda recommends carving and refrigerating leftovers within two hours to keep food out of the "danger zone" where bacteria thrive. She points out that cutting up the turkey helps it cool faster, reducing the risk of foodborne illness. Reheating and Leftovers: Stay Out of the Danger Zone As the discussion continues, Amanda tackles the topic of leftovers. She insists that reheating food to 165°F is crucial, whether you use the oven or microwave. Crockpots, she warns, take too long to reach a safe temperature and should not be used for reheating. Amanda also shares practical advice for storing leftovers: divide large portions into smaller containers to speed up cooling, and label everything with dates to avoid confusion. She reminds listeners that most leftovers are safe for three to four days in the fridge, or up to six months in the freezer for best quality. Pet Safety and Common Misconceptions Before wrapping up, Janet and Amanda address a few often-overlooked issues. They warn against giving cooked turkey bones to pets, as they can splinter and cause harm. Janet also highlights the dangers of using sponges and dish towels for cleanup, recommending disposable paper towels and sanitizing wipes instead. Throughout the conversation, Amanda dispels common misconceptions and encourages everyone to use common sense and good hygiene to protect their loved ones. Enjoy the Holidays—Safely With Amanda's expert advice, you can confidently prepare, serve, and store your holiday meals. By planning ahead, practicing good kitchen hygiene, and following safe cooking and storage guidelines, you'll ensure that your celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons. This holiday season, keep food safety at the top of your menu and enjoy peace of mind along with your pumpkin pie. Click here to download a Thanksgiving Food Safety sheet.

Ready to transform your space? We're here to help, so listen in for more home improvement advice! - Frozen Pipes: Get hot tips for thawing frozen pipes and avoiding costly damage. - Tile Floors: These budget-friendly ideas can give outdated tile floors a fresh new look. - Furniture: Reupholster your furniture for a fraction of the cost of buying new.   Q & A: - Mold: Paint just won't stick in one corner of Judy's wall where there may be mold. She can use a bleach solution to clean the surface, then prime and paint it over. - Tile Flooring: Roger wants to install large floor tiles over the existing mosaic tile and grout. He can tile right over the existing surface by using the right type of adhesive. - Insulation: Blown-in insulation is blowing back through Laura's stove vent. It may be a commercial fan that's too strong, and she should consult an appliance or HVAC expert. - Foundation: The Drylok sealer on Jodi's foundation is cracked and bubbling. She can either remove it or have a mason attach a woven wire mesh and apply new stucco. - Garage Doors: Nancy's old garage doors are shimmying and not opening or closing properly. It would be better to replace the doors and openers instead of repairing them. - HVAC: The heat pump is making horrible noises and switching to defrost without shutting off the compressor first. It could be caused by several things, but we advise Conrad to replace the old unit.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! After a freezing winter storm shut schools, cut power and cancelled or delayed flights, Texas and other Deep South states were slowly thawing as weather warmed. Conditions in North Texas were returning to normal after a winter weather blast packing snow, ice and wintry mix disrupted the region Thursday into Friday; In other news, firefighters scrambled Sunday to make further progress against wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes and killed 24 people in the Los Angeles area as forecasters again warned of dangerous weather with the return of strong winds this week. At least 16 people were missing, and authorities said that number was expected to rise; work on $370 million high-rises planned in Uptown Dallas is scheduled to begin later this year. Chalk Hill Towers is a mixed-use development set between North Harwood Street and Harry Hines Boulevard; And Klay Thompson added another milestone to his long list of accomplishments in the NBA. The Mavs sharpshooter reached the 16,000-point mark in Sunday's game against the Denver Nuggets at American Airlines Center. Thompson was key to a hot start for the Mavericks, going 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range as Dallas raced out to a comfortable first-half lead. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to secure the win. The Mavs led by as many as 19 in the third quarter but Denver rallied in the fourth to beat Dallas 112-101. The teams will meet again on Tuesday. In this episode of Trending with Timmerie, Timmerie sits down with Dr. John Di Camillo from the National Catholic Bioethics Center to tackle a tough, emotional, and deeply ethical question: What do you do if you've repented from using IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and now have frozen embryos?    First, Why Is IVF a Problem?  Timmerie briefly recaps why the Church opposes IVF. The main issue? IVF bypasses the sacredness of life created through the marital act, introduces potential abortions through "selective reduction," and often results in children never knowing their biological parents.    Okay, So What About Those Frozen Embryos?  This is where it gets really tricky. Dr. Di Camillo explains that the Church sees this situation as one of deep injustice—one that doesn't have a clear-cut solution. He admits it's a struggle, both for the parents and the ethicists advising them. The Church has outlined what cannot be done, such as:   Using the embryos for research or experimentation - (they're not "material").   Discarding the embryos carelessly (e.g., down the drain).   Using surrogates to gestate these embryos (another big no-no).   But What Can Be Done? Dr. Di Camillo brings up a few options that, while not definitively endorsed by the Church, haven't been ruled out either:   Thawing the embryos with the view that cryopreservation might be an extraordinary means of care, followed by a respectful burial.    Prenatal adoption, where a non-infertile couple might gestate and raise the child—not as a treatment for infertility, but to save the child's life.    Gestating the child themselves (if it's their biological child), thus giving their own child a chance to be born and raised within their marriage.    Timmerie and Dr. Di Camillo remind us that none of these options are easy, and none are perfect solutions. But they are ways to approach an incredibly challenging situation with as much moral clarity as possible.   Final Thoughts The Church urges us to adhere to God's plan for creating life within marriage. When we try to "play God," we often end up in heartbreaking dilemmas like this. The key takeaway? Support your loved ones struggling with infertility by guiding them toward ethical solutions and remaining steadfast in your faith.    For more insights or to seek personal advice, Dr. Di Camillo and his team can be reached through the National Catholic Bioethics Center.
