Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay head out on town to get messed up and cause havoc as they wrap up XXXmas by discussing one of the great modern Christmas comedies, 'The Night Before.' Andy starts it off by unwrapping a story about the time he did shrooms at a church with friends in his youth, and how the evening quickly unraveled. Then the fellas dive right into a movie they believe should be on the pantheon of Xmas movies. It wastes zero time getting to the debauchery, and much like Andy in real life, Seth Rogen's Isaac overshoots the mark with his narcotics use very early one. After encountering a talking nativity scene, and meeting a demonic baby, he ends up deciding to level out by taking even more drugs. Around that time, Anthony Mackie's Chris has one of the grimiest, and most memorable sex scenes. The hilarity and cameos continue as a sex-crazed James Franco, and his dong, make an appearance, but the MVP of the whole affair has to be Michael Shannon's celestial Mr. Green. Mirroring this episode, there's stories of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, with listeners who make it to the end earning their wings.

About This Episode: This week on Stageworthy, host Phil Rickaby is joined by Chloë Whitehorn, who is currently based in Kingston, Ontario. Chloë, a former actor, discusses her journey to becoming a prolific writer, focusing on themes of women's rights and mental health. She talks about how her plays—which include The Pigeon, Blood River, and Fall After Midsummer —are driven by characters and their emotions rather than just issues. Chloë also offers a glimpse into the Kingston theatre scene, her unique writing methods, and her perspective on why Canadian theatre struggles with second productions. This episode explores: How Chloë's approach to playwriting is rooted in character and emotion, stemming from her acting background. The challenge of tackling dark themes and how she judges where to stop when exploring traumatic topics. Her writing process, which involves working well with deadlines and puzzling pieces together rather than outlining. Why she returned to Canada after living in the US and the cultural differences she observed. The atmosphere and supportive community of the Kingston theatre scene compared to Toronto. The difficulty Canadian plays face in securing a second production after their premiere. Guest:

Listeners of The Wolf know that despite the fact that The Wolf lived mere yards (or meters) from Abbey Road, he and Action Jackson aren't huge Beatles fans. While he did go through a Beatles stage in high school, it was really an education on how the band evolved and created some amazing music which is still enjoyed and studied today. However, thanks to a run of 60s rock related movies that ran on Cinemax one night in the 80s, The Wolf became very familiar with Help! as he recorded the movie on VHS and watched it over and over. It was in technicolor, unlike A Hard Day's Night, and showed the boys having fun in exotic locales like Switzerland, The Bahamas, Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace. The seven tunes on the album that were included in the movie all hold up well and are fun to sing along with while you're watching. But the album is the first step moving from being bubble gum pop stars into more respected recording artists. We review the UK version of the album as the US version is shorter with orchestrated score tunes from the movie. The whole first side of the UK album features beloved songs from the movie like the title track, Ticket To Ride, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and The Night Before. But the second side also features some Beatles classics like Ringo singing Act Naturally, I've Just Seen A Face and the all-time classic Yesterday. It's amazing that the boys were all so young (21-24) and were maturing before our eyes as they were now able to write more robust tunes with more mature themes. Bob Dylan had introduced them to marijuana by now and they'd done their first LSD trips which would show up more on an album from later in 1965, Rubber Soul (and after). But this one has one foot in the old, teenage dream Beatles phase and one in the more mature and experimental Beatles. We can't believe it's turning 60 but we went track x track to celebrate. «Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory» ist unser brandneues Sounds! Arch Brown, an amateur photographer turned incidental filmmaker first came to broad public attention through his films. During gay liberation's first decade, Brown's homoerotic films achieved an international following garnering amazing reviews.Fellow filmmaker and producer, Jack Deveau, entrusted Brown with a surreal film which has been compared to the works of Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Luis Buñuel and Jean Cocteau. So what is  Arch Brown's The Night Before trying to tell us?Dick Fisk was one of the most famous faces of gay erotica in the mid to late 1970's and onward into the early 1980's. He was manly, oozed sexuality and confidence and….that mustache. He appeared in only a handful of magazines and movies but his iconic look made him Falcon Studios first "instant" superstar. In this episode we are going to celebrate Arch Brown, a filmmaker who would become a master craftsman and philanthropist after leaving the corporate world behind, his film, The Night Before, a beautifully crafted film that was on Variety's 50 top-grossing film's list in the nation for five weeks. And finally we will celebrate Dick Fisk, the archetypal Castro clone with the perfect physique and generous endowment whose contributions to the gay adult entertainment industry still resonate with his admirers today. Support the show

Edwin Arlington Robinson was born in Head Tide, Maine on December 22, 1869 (the same year as W. B. Yeats). His family moved to Gardiner, Maine, in 1870, which renamed “Tilbury Town,” became the backdrop for many of Robinson's poems. Robinson described his childhood as stark and unhappy; he once wrote in a letter to Amy Lowell that he remembered wondering why he had been born at the age of six. After high school, Robinson spent two years studying at Harvard University as a special student and his first poems were published in the Harvard Advocate.Robinson privately printed and released his first volume of poetry, The Torrent and the Night Before, in 1896 at his own expense; this collection was extensively revised and published in 1897 as The Children of the Night. Unable to make a living by writing, he got a job as an inspector for the New York City subway system. In 1902, he published Captain Craig and Other Poems. This work received little attention until President Theodore Roosevelt wrote a magazine article praising it and Robinson. Roosevelt also offered Robinson a sinecure in a U.S. Customs House, a job he held from 1905 to 1910. Robinson dedicated his next work, The Town Down the River (1910), to Roosevelt.Robinson's first major success was The Man Against the Sky (1916). He also composed a trilogy based on Arthurian legends: Merlin (1917), Lancelot (1920), and Tristram (1927), which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1928. Robinson was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Collected Poems (1921) in 1922 and The Man Who Died Twice (1924) in 1925. For the last twenty-five years of his life, Robinson spent his summers at the MacDowell Colony of artists and musicians in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Robinson never married and led a notoriously solitary lifestyle. He died in New York City on April 6, 1935.-bio via Academy of American Poets Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
