Rose Previte and Louis Caldera on Diversity as Strength

In an episode originally aired in 2018, restaurateur, entrepreneur and author Rose Previte and former Secretary of the Army Louis Caldera talk about leadership, public service, and how diversity is our greatest strength. “As long as we're true to our principles of equality, and people can develop their talents through education and contribute something, then that's what we need to do,” says Caldera. Previte's three DC-area restaurants (Compass Rose, Michelin-starred Maydān, and Kirby Club) are a celebration of diversity inspired by her upbringing with a Lebanese mother and Sicilian father and her own extensive travels. “Street food is the great equalizer. It's where everyone, whether rich or poor… come together over food,” she says. Hello again and welcome to another Industry Night. For the month of December I have had the pleasure of taping this show in WREN restaurant in the Watermark Hotel. This area is the new shiny & bright Capital One Center. An entire town center has been built up on the other side of the highway from what you traditionally think of Tysons. Joining me today is Tara McNamara the Chief Experience Officer AND she was the first person I met here at the Watermark — a little over 2+ years ago when the property opened —  and she can really talk about the hotel's growth and all the amazing amenities! Later in the show, I am talking to Restaurateur, TV Host, Wine Trailblazer and now cookbook author — Rose Previte. Rose and I go way back. She reached out to me when she was launching her first restaurant, Compass Rose. She had a very clear vision of what she wanted and knowing that she was new to the restaurant game she smartly engaged with people in the industry to verify she was on the right path. And, needless to say she was. After opening Compass Rose to massive accolades the Michelin-starred Maydan followed as did Kirby Club and now the new Medina. In her spare time she hosted a TV show, has launched Go There Wines and now is behind the gorgeous Maydan cookbook Let's get into it Rose Previte Owner, Compass Rose, Maydan, Kirby Club Co-Founder, Go There Wines Author, Maydan, Recipes from Lebanon and Beyond Quotes "Go, feel, and experience the place beyond flavors and techniques. Chef and restaurateur Rose Previte was raised in a food-loving, Sicilian-Lebanese family in Ohio, and grew up working for her mother's Middle Eastern catering business. Since then, Rose has opened a second critically acclaimed restaurant in DC called Maydan which earned a Michelin star in 2019.  In this episode, Rose and Esme discuss the ways that identity and culture are expressed through our cuisines, the amazing food-focused trip through North Africa and the Middle East Rose took with her Maydan team, and the experience of revisiting Lebanon with her twin aunts who, like many second-generation immigrants of their age from that part of the Middle East, were returning to their maternal homeland for the very first time. In this episode of Add Passion and Stir, George Washington University professor of leadership Louis Caldera and Rose Previte, owner of Compass Rose and Maydān in Washington DC, talk about culture, leadership and the potential for diversity to drive positive change in the US. Both guests believe diversity is our greatest strength. “As long as we’re true to our principles of equality, and people can develop their talents through education and contribute something, then that’s what we need to do,” says Caldera, the son of Mexican immigrants who became Secretary of the Army. He emphasizes how our country benefits when the brightest people in the world want to come here to be educated. “The growing diversity of this country will become more politically active and they’re going to say, ‘I don’t fear people who come from places like where I come from because I’m a contributing American,’” he predicts. Previte remembers how her diverse family educated others about they were through food. Caldera, who grew up poor in Southern California at a time when the Latino community was still small, believes shared meals are important for building strong families and communities. However, shared meals can be difficult with the work schedules in low-income families, so he advocates for supports like minimum wage, family assistance and opportunities for education.Listen to this conversation between two leaders who understand diversity as a strength that builds positive social change.
