Abbasid History Podcast

Thomas Bauer's "A Culture of Ambiguity" stands out as one of the most important contributions to Islamic Studies in recent decades. First published in German in 2011, it wasn't until 2021 that it became available in English. Bauer's three decades of knowledge and expertise shine through in the work, which earned him the  Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award in Germany. It is rare for an academic book rich in insights for specialists to also be engaging enough for general readers, yet this is exactly what Bauer has achieved. However our guest today has an essay published in the Maydan journal online journal interogating Bauer's conceptualisation of "ambiguity" and its application in the history of islamic culture. Faheem A. Hussain is an independent researcher. He has a BA (Hons.) in Arabic and Islamic studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, a PGCE in Religious Studies from Roehampton University, and an MA in philosophy from Heythrop College, University of London. His writings can be found at https://faheemahussain.substack.com/ and https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain. Faheem's article: https://themaydan.com/2024/08/ambiguity-as-a-master-key-critically-reading-thomas-bauers-culture-of-ambiguity/ https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain/status/1772736085627457970 Timestamps 02:11 You say in your essay:  Now this does not pretend to be anything but a critical review of Bauer, interrogating his ideas of ambiguity, its coherence and implications, and despite my best efforts in civility, there's no hiding my polemical intent. Even so, I wish to insist that this book is a product of a fine mind and generous soul, and that I have no doubt that if anyone reads the book, they will only leave more humbled, indebted as well as greatly enriched by reading it. Without a doubt, this is a book that should be read as well as kept on a shelf. Before we start why don't you give us an overview of the book and what he liked best about it. 16:23 At the heart of Bauer's work is this concept of Ambiguity. Tell us what he means by this and your reservations. 37:52 For me, my favourite parts were on the divergent readings of the Quran and the difference between the comfort of medieval scholars about that, particularly Ibn al-Jazari and the anxiety of modern Muslims. Though at first blush the late Saudi-Salafi cleric, Sheikh Ibn al-ʿUthaymin and the Pakistani activist al-Mawdudi, God be kind to their souls, might seem apart yet they share the same modern anxiety about ambiguity according to Bauer. It seems you are more on board with him on this then his other applications of ambiguity in the cultural history of Islam. 49:25 Like you, I wasn't convinced by his thoughts on the concept of foreigness in Islamic cultural history. You also take him to task on his take on homoerotica. I also feel that with current debate about gender and the like whether it makes sense to say there is a lack of ambiguity in contemporary culture. I feel if we had experts on medieval, early modern and modern Europe as Bauer is an expert on medieval Arabic whether we would have better insights on ambiguity as a concept. 01:03:52 And finally before we end tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? Works mentioned in episode: Pieter Coppens, Did Modernity End Polyvalence? Hello again and welcome to another Industry Night. For the month of December I have had the pleasure of taping this show in WREN restaurant in the Watermark Hotel. This area is the new shiny & bright Capital One Center. An entire town center has been built up on the other side of the highway from what you traditionally think of Tysons. Joining me today is Tara McNamara the Chief Experience Officer AND she was the first person I met here at the Watermark — a little over 2+ years ago when the property opened —  and she can really talk about the hotel's growth and all the amazing amenities! Later in the show, I am talking to Restaurateur, TV Host, Wine Trailblazer and now cookbook author — Rose Previte. Rose and I go way back. She reached out to me when she was launching her first restaurant, Compass Rose. She had a very clear vision of what she wanted and knowing that she was new to the restaurant game she smartly engaged with people in the industry to verify she was on the right path. And, needless to say she was. After opening Compass Rose to massive accolades the Michelin-starred Maydan followed as did Kirby Club and now the new Medina. In her spare time she hosted a TV show, has launched Go There Wines and now is behind the gorgeous Maydan cookbook Let's get into it Rose Previte Owner, Compass Rose, Maydan, Kirby Club Co-Founder, Go There Wines Author, Maydan, Recipes from Lebanon and Beyond Quotes "Go, feel, and experience the place beyond flavors and techniques. In White Enclosures: Racial Capitalism and Coloniality Along the Balkan Route (Duke UP, 2022), Piro Rexhepi explores the overlapping postsocialist and postcolonial border regimes in the Balkans that are designed to protect whiteness and exclude Muslim, Roma, and migrant communities. Rather than focusing on present crises to the exclusion of the histories that have gotten us to this point, Rexhepi takes a wide lens to understand how different mechanisms and regimes of exclusion are historically intertwined. This book makes a bold and important intervention against 'colorblindness' and white assimilation in the region, pushing us instead to disturb hierarchies of power by forging solidarities with those who are most excluded and marginalized by the Euro-American colonial project.  Piro Rexhepi is a researcher based in London. In this wide-reaching conversation Abdulmumit tells the story of the direct role he played in the Black freedom struggles of the 1960s/1970s and the heavy price he paid for his involvement in the Black Liberation Movement. Abdulmumit served 23 years of his life in prison as a domestic political prisoner and in this discussion he sheds light on the plight of political prisoners and how Islam shapes his commitment to the Black Liberation struggle. Abdulmumit also speaks to the role the arts play in the quest for freedom and self-determination and shares his thoughts on how the struggle for freedom and self-determination has changed since the 1970s.  To the question, “What is your Black Muslim theme song?,” Abdulmumit chose Nina Simone's “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” – with lyrics added by his artist children to include the Muslim experience. Our guest today on Knowledge and its Producers is Vanessa Taylor. She is the founding editor of the Drinking Gourd magazine, and she edits a newsletter called Nazar, which tackles issues of surveillance and the Muslim community in the United States. She is a writer and journalist, tackling topics such as Black Muslim womanhood, Muslim American politics, Afrofuturism, surveillance, and more. Our interview is going to range from the more abstract to the more concrete, the more personal: what is writing like for Vanessa? How much do institutions matter? What can we do to challenge them? Knowledge and its Producers is a limited podcast series from the Maydan hosted by N.A. Mansour. In each episode, we'll be talking to people who are at the forefront of knowledge production, typically away from the traditional educational power structures. It's been an exercise in thinking through how knowledge is constructed & barriers to entry. Most importantly, we highlight people demolishing those barriers. These interviews cover everything from labor to creativity to breakfast. We're going beyond traditional educational systems to really break down how different elements of knowledge production fit together and create community. This show is generously funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.

As we’re taping Opening Soon this chilly March morning, we’ve just passed the one-year anniversary since the declaration of this pandemic, the start of shutdowns, and, for most, the switch into survival mode. While many businesses, chefs, cooks, and anyone, for that matter, have sought to survive, some have found a way to thrive - to go beyond. Not just in business, but also in social good. The hustle has been real for most of us, fits and starts, iteration after iteration. Our guest today has perhaps out-hustled them all while raising millions for social justice causes. It’s no surprise to us as we met today’s guest several years ago in our Tilit store, and her vibe exudes genuine care as well as both personal and community success. We're excited to welcome to the show Executive Pastry Chef, Paola Velez. Sato Moughalian is one of those people who can do drastically different things well. She is, to my mind, everything a professional historian should be. Sensitive. Kind. Fearless. Detail-oriented. She's also a professional flutist and is the artistic director of Perspectives Ensemble, which is a chamber group. She's invested in documenting her people's history, musical, material and more. We'll be talking about, amongst other topics, her recent book, out 2019 from Stanford University Press' imprint Redwood Press, about her grandfather, the artist, entrepreneur, and ceramicist David Ohannessian, Feast of Ashes: The Life and Art of David Ohannessian. It was nominated for a Pen/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography and was a finalist for the Prose Award in Biography and Autobiography. Feast of Ashes tells the story of David Ohannessian, the renowned ceramicist who in 1919 founded the art of Armenian pottery in Jerusalem, where his work and that of his followers is now celebrated as a local treasure. Ohannessian's life encompassed some of the most tumultuous upheavals of the modern Middle East. Born in an isolated Anatolian mountain village, he witnessed the rise of violent nationalism in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire, endured arrest and deportation in the Armenian Genocide, founded a new ceramics tradition in Jerusalem under the British Mandate, and spent his final years, uprooted, in Cairo and Beirut. The book begins and ends with his granddaughrer, Sato Moughalian and her experiences as an artist and as a historian of this important narrative. Moughalian is now working on a second book. BRP 254 - MAYDAN https://soundcloud.com/maydan_official Rising out of Israel’s hotbed of talent, Maydan is an artist with an impressive story to tell. From bedroom DJ to highly-regarded nightclub resident, the Israeli native has carved out a niche of sizable proportions as he continues his assault on the global dance scene. Rising to the upper echelons of his country’s ever-expanding music scene from humble origins, a mixer and a pair of turntables saw Maydan climb to the summit of the Tel Aviv dance scene, coupled with a burning passion and an unwavering dedication to his craft. Add to the mix a healthy dose of talent and experience and it quickly becomes clear why the Israeli became resident at some of the most elegant hotspots in his city with his finger perfectly poised over the cultural pulse. Able to command an audience far beyond his homeland, DJ performances in Zurich, Prague and Amsterdam’s famous Club NL, have extended the Maydan name outside his country’s borders. Moreover, DJ appearances alongside a surfeit of hallowed names – from Carl Cox and Sasha to Hernan Cattaneo and Joris Voorn – have showcased the MayDan name in the bright glow of neon lights. Inspired by leading figures that have shaped the underground dance scene, both at home and on the international stage, the Maydan production career has continued to grow apace since joining the Asymmetric Recordings roster in 2015. Subsequently heading up A&R for both the main label and its sister imprint, Asymmetric Dip, Maydan’s role has evolved impressively over time. With his work additionally signed to Cattaneo’s Sudbeat and Tvardovsky’s Dear Deer, Maydan’s work for the Lonya led label provided a new impetus for his music to shine with 2016’s “Absolute Isolation” EP taking centre stage. Supported by the DJ glitterati that includes Nick Warren, Max Graham and Cattaneo himself, Maydan’s original and remix production material continues to attract widespread backing from all corners of the globe. A career that continues to gather momentum in 2017 and beyond, the Maydan star burns brightly in Israel’s glittering firmament. Bakers Against Racism co-founder and Washington DC executive pastry chef Paola Velez (Maydān, Compass Rose) joins Billy Shore and Share Our Strength Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Pamela Taylor to talk about finding the courage to speak out against racism and other forms of injustice. “We didn’t think this was going to go viral. We launched on Thursday night around 7pm and by 10pm we had 200 participants around the world ready to bake… We were able to raise almost $2M in less than 2 weeks,” recounts Velez. “Whenever I think about race relations in America, I think it boils down to one common thread. We need to love harder than we’ve ever loved before. We need to truly transform our nation with the action of caring for others as if they were ourselves,” she says. At the beginning of the pandemic, Velez was furloughed and forced to file for unemployment benefits. “I was scared and I was broken. I realized that if I’m feeling this way and I have all these accolades, imagine somebody who doesn’t have any of this,” she says. “My focus was shifted. COVID changed everything, so I started speaking up... I had no fear because I had lost it all,” she explains.
