"Empowering Indigenous Voices: Highlights from the National Indigenous Cannabis Policy Summit"In this episode of the Let's Talk Hemp podcast, I had the pleasure of attending the National Indigenous Cannabis Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. This remarkable event, organized by Mary Jane Oatman, Rob Pero, and the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association (ICIA), brought together tribal leaders, industry professionals, healthcare experts, and policymakers to discuss critical cannabis and hemp policy issues affecting indigenous communities.Throughout the summit, we engaged in three days of insightful keynotes, roundtables, and panel discussions that covered a wide range of topics, including cannabis economic development, the legal landscape of hemp derivatives, sustainable cultivation, and the role of cannabis in addressing health concerns like PTSD. A key focus was on tribal sovereignty and the need for cannabis policies that reflect the unique needs of indigenous communities.I had the opportunity to sit down with Rob Pero from ICIA, who shared his thoughts on the event's success and the importance of collaboration among diverse voices in the cannabis industry. We discussed how the summit fostered an intimate environment for meaningful conversations and emotional connections, which is often lacking in larger industry events.Mary Jane Oatman also joined me to discuss the history of the ICIA and the significance of this year's summit. She emphasized the importance of partnerships and the need for indigenous communities to have a seat at the table in the broader cannabis conversation.Additionally, I spoke with various attendees, including Eben Sumner, Mike Lamuto, Hunter Buffington, Alicia Fall from Her Many Voices and Ross Sloan, who highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event and the potential for indigenous communities to lead in the cannabis space. The discussions underscored the importance of unity and shared goals in advancing cannabis policy and creating opportunities for underserved communities.Overall, this episode captures the essence of the summit and the exciting developments in the cannabis industry as indigenous voices continue to rise and make an impact. Through the course of their conversation, Jenny and Al learn from Harvey's insights about the current state of Christianity in Europe and America and the challenges around mission in a context of functional atheism. Chapter 1 What's Vermeer's Hat Book by Timothy Brook"Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" is a book written by Timothy Brook. It was first published in 2008. The book explores the global connections and influences on the world during the 17th century through the examination of various objects depicted in the paintings of the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. The objects, such as a hat, a porcelain bowl, a map, and a silver coin, serve as a starting point to delve into the interconnectedness of cultures and economies in this era of expanding trade and colonialism. The book provides insights into how these objects reveal the global networks and flows of goods, ideas, and people during the 17th century.Chapter 2 Is Vermeer's Hat Book A Good BookThe book "Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" by Timothy Brook is generally well-received and considered a good book. It offers a unique perspective on the 17th century and the impact of globalization through the analysis of five objects depicted in paintings by the Dutch artist Vermeer. The book combines art history, global history, and cultural analysis to provide insights into the connections between different parts of the world during this period. Many readers appreciate the interdisciplinary approach and find the book informative, engaging, and thought-provoking. However, personal reading preferences may vary, so it is recommended to read reviews or sample the book before making a final judgment.Chapter 3 Vermeer's Hat Book by Timothy Brook Summary"Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World" is a book by Timothy Brook that explores the global connections and cultural exchanges that took place during the 17th century, as seen through the artworks of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The book focuses on a series of paintings by Vermeer and uses them as a starting point to examine the interconnectedness of the world during this period. The title of the book refers to one of Vermeer's most famous paintings, "Girl with a Pearl Earring," in which the subject is wearing a turban coiled with a blue and white drape. This hat, according to the author, symbolizes the global trade and cultural exchange that was taking place during Vermeer's time.Throughout the book, Brook takes readers on a journey across the globe, exploring the different regions and cultures that were involved in these global exchanges. From the ports of China to the mines of Bolivia, the author uncovers the complex network of trade routes that spanned the continents during the 17th century.Brook also delves into the ways in which these global connections influenced art, science, and trade. He discusses how the commodities, such as spices, textiles, and ceramics, that were exchanged during this period had a significant impact on the material culture of the time. Moreover, he explores how the exchange of ideas and knowledge across borders shaped the way people thought about the world.Through his analysis of Vermeer's paintings, Brook showcases how the global connections of the 17th century can be traced back to even the smallest details of everyday life. For example, he examines the presence of Chinese porcelain in Vermeer's paintings as a representation of the East Indies trade and European fascination with exotic goods.Overall, "Vermeer's Hat" provides a captivating exploration of the global connections and cultural exchanges that shaped the 17th century. In this episode of the Wisdom Calling podcast, host Bobo Beck interviews Allan Sherer, Director of Global Connections at North Hills Church in Taylors, SC, about the wisdom of cultivating God's heart for the marginalized and vulnerable.Sherer discusses the importance of seeing the poor and vulnerable through the lens of God's love and compassion, and he shares practical ways that we can live out our faith in this area. He also talks about the importance of connecting our hearts to our theology, and how our understanding of God should shape the way we treat others. This episode is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about how to live a life of generosity and compassion, and how to be a better advocate for the marginalized and vulnerable in our communities.Key takeaways from the episode:Poverty is often rooted in brokenness of relationships (with God, self, others). There is a direct connection between our personal piety/holiness and how we think about and treat people, especially the poor.Generosity is not just about money, but also about time, skills, and leveraging human and social capital.God wants our hearts more than anything else. There is a relationship between obedience and blessing, and between disobedience and cursing/lack of blessing. We can cultivate a heart for the marginalized and vulnerable by getting to know God as the one who hears the cries of the poor and is compassionate. We should not think about or engage with the poor and marginalized in a way that is patronizing or dehumanizing. Instead, we should see them as people who are loved by God and who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.Resources mentioned in the episode:North Hills Church https://northhillschurch.com/New Way Global https://www.newway.global/The Judson School https://thejudsonschool.com/Yass Prize https://yassprize.org/awardees/new-way-global/Acton Institute - Effective Stewardship (curriculum) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2YhagjmWvB9W74vf16yuVx6IH1RM7SsOChalmers Center https://chalmers.org/When Helping Hurts (book) https://chalmers.org/resources/books/Walking With the Poor (book) https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Poor-Principles-Transformational-Development/dp/1570759391Tyler Staton https://www.tylerstaton.com/Bryan Stevenson; Just Mercy (book/film) https://justmercy.eji.org/Bob Goff; Dream Big (book) https://www.bobgoff.com/shopSupport the showYou can order the devotionals at https://wisdomcalling.org

“Travel has become a way to remind myself how it feels to get lost, and then get unlost. It is a way to remember the discomfort of uncertainty and the unfamiliar. It's an exercise in receiving the unexpected.” –Kristin Van Tassel In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Kristin discuss being in DC, living in Kansas, and Kristin's family trip to Mexico using migrant-economy buses (1:30); how seeking international restaurants and grocery stores at home can be a window into distant cultures (8:00); Kristin's motivation to learn Spanish in middle age, and how it connects to her perspective as a teacher (16:00); Kristin's harrowing experience of getting lost on a run in Nairobi in 1990, and how getting lost in a place is a way of experiencing it in a deeper way (20:30); how Kristin experienced the country and culture of Moldova through soups and salads while being hosted there by a former student (34:30); and how to stay open to being lost without compromising yourself, and embrace unfamiliar languages as a traveler and learner (41:00). Kristin Van Tassel teaches writing and American literature at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. She writes essays and poetry about place, teaching, motherhood, and travel.
