The Tragic Week of 1909 - the birth of revolutionary Barcelona

Barcelona is the city in the world with the most extensive history of barricade fights. These words come from philosopher Friedrich Engels, and many other thinkers have pointed to Barcelona as the city of revolutions. 115 years ago, on July 25, 1909, the Catalan capital witnessed one of the first popular uprisings of the century, known as the Tragic Week or La Setmana Tràgica in Catalan.  What began as an anti-war movement opposing the conscription for the colonial war in Morroco, soon turned into an anti-clerical revolt. And it left a striking image: the Barcelona sky filled with smoke, as more than 80 churches were set on fire. Oriol Escudé Macià joins Lea Beliaeva Bander to revisit the uprising and explain the meaning behind Barcelona's nickname ‘Rose of Fire' or Rosa de Foc. We hear from historian Josep Pich from the University of Pompeu Fabra, who argues that the events should be renamed as the Revolution of 1909.  We also catch up with historian Salvador Lou, one of the guides of the Barcelona Rebelde tours, who explains how Barcelona became the capital of revolutionary movements. The Catalan phrase of the week is “jugar amb foc,” which means to play with fire.  Get in touch with the podcast team: fillingthesink@acn.cat

Justin Huhn, Founder and Publisher of the Uranium Insider, joins us to provides a comprehensive macro update on the uranium and nuclear fuel sector, after having a very good year of higher u308 prices surging over $80 per pound, and very nice moves higher in many of the more established uranium mining stocks.   On the demand side of the market, we continue to see big commitments to increasing their nuclear energy build out from many countries coming out of the ongoing COP 28 conference, and we note many surprising countries, like Sweden, South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, Morroco, and Uganda making commitments to build new reactors.   Additionally we see both lifetime extensions on existing plants in the west, and Chinese reactor builds in the east as key demand drivers. With regards to the contracting cycle and term pricing, we have seen more transactions over the last year which demonstrates that the larger players are getting into position for a more active phase of the uranium pricing cycle.   Next we shift over to the supply side of the sector, and the increased interest in companies that can readily produce uranium, which is mostly isolated to a few of the largest companies like Cameco, Orano, and Kazatomprom,  and then some of the smaller US-based ISR producers like Energy Fuels (UUUU) (EFR), enCore Energy  (EU) (ENCUF), Ur-Energy (URE) (URG), Peninsula Energy (PEN.AX) (PENMF), and Uranium Energy Corp (UEC).  Justin discusses the size of some of the new reactors being built and the initial fuel load many will need that is 2-3 times the normal operating fuel, and there just won't be enough supply coming online to fuel all the 62 reactors under construction and the existing 436 global reactors, without some larger projects coming online.    We discussed the significance of the NexGen Energy's (NXE) Arrow deposit, the Phoenix Project from Denison Mines (DML) (DNN), and Global Atomic's (GLO) (GLATF) Dasa Project as key larger projects that will need to come online to feed the growing demand, but noted that they are still years away from production coming online.   This creates a very interesting supply/demand mismatch over the next 5 year window of time, and Justin unpacks how this will continue to underpin pricing for the medium to longer-term, as well as continued interest in the uranium stocks from investors.   Click here to visit the Uranium Insider website.

Giles Milton is one of my favourite authors producing narrative history today. The stories he tells are just jaw dropping. We talked about his book White Gold which tells the stories of Thomas Pellow who was seized and taken off into slavery in 1714. Looming large in the story is the remarkable Moulay Ismail, ruler of Morroco at the time. He makes his entrance on his chariot pulled by some of his eunuchs and some of his 500 wives. A brutal and cruel ruler but a fascinating character. The title of the podcast refers to the song Rule Britannia, written around this time. Its boast was that Britons never, never will be slaves. Well they were, and in large numbers.Giles is in great form here - he is a compelling storyteller in his books and he repeats the trick for the podcast.

VT's Dr. Kevin Barrett reports from the scene in Saidia Morocco where 2 days ago,  the Algerian coastguard shot dead two tourists holidaying in Morocco who reportedly strayed into Algerian waters on their jet skis. They were among four French-Moroccan dual nationals who had set off from the Moroccan resort of Saidia.A third member of the group was arrested by the coastguard which patrols the two states' closed border. The two nations have a long history of tension, tied to Morocco's claims to the disputed Western Sahara. The shooting sparked anger in Morocco after a fisherman posted footage of a lifeless body floating in the sea.Mohamed Kissi was the only one of the group of four to make it back to Morocco, AFP news agency reports, quoting Moroccan media.Abdelali Merchouer has been named as the second man killed. His body is still in Algeria, according to Moroccan news site Le360.The man arrested by the Algerian coastguard, named as Smail Snabe, reportedly appeared before a prosecutor on Wednesday but no details were given.A Moroccan government spokesman declined to comment on the shooting, telling AFP it was "a matter for the judiciary".There was no immediate comment from Algeria. The two nations share a border nearly 2,000km (1,242 miles) long which has been a source of tension since independence from French colonial rule.Dr. Kevin Barrett, a Ph.D. Arabist-Islamologist is one of America's best-known critics of the War on Terror. Horseback Adventures and Endurance Riding Margaret Reynolds is an endurance rider who enjoys traveling abroad on horse adventures. When my friend and listener, John Zeliff, told me she would make a great guest, I listened. John is president of the NATRC, and we had him on the show a while back to talk about endurance riding. Margaret Reynolds is a Master Growth Catalyst of Breakthrough Masters Unlimited. For over 20 years, she has helped companies grow and improve their businesses. She has always had a love of horses. Like many, after her kids grew up and went out on their own, she got a horse. Margaret found endurance riding was her thing and joined both NATRC and AERC to compete in the sport. She also had a bucket list of places she would like to ride. With a tight group of friends sharing the same desire to ride in exotic places, they took their first horseback adventure to Spain. They rode the country, met the people, and sample the food. Margaret and her friends got to see the country from a unique vantage point. Since then, she has traveled and rode horses in many places, including Jordan, Portugal, and Morroco. Margaret is an avid writer and documents lessons from these trips in her blog. One of her articles about a horseback adventure she had in India riding a Marwari horse was published in the Outdoor Journal. Margaret tells us the trips were transformative, and she encourages any with a inkling to pursue their dream. Horseback Adventures Over the years, I've been lucky to interview many people in the travel industry. Most recently was Keith Swenson of Stone Horse Expeditions in Mongolia. Flameworking Pioneer Lewis C. Wilson: Glass Videos, Trade Shows and Sculpture

Under cover of his signature top hat and distinctive moustache, Lewis Wilson has accomplished more than most people dream of. His list of achievements includes success as a glass art instructional video producer, demonstrating lampworking artist, promoter of the world's largest hot glass competition, and founding member of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. A fixture at glass bead and pipe shows, “Looie” is also a fire-eating juggler, knife swallower and a black belt in karate. In his Crystal Myths gallery, you'll find everything from goblets and vases to birds and dinosaurs. The fantasy realm is where this artist draws much of his inspiration. Being from New Mexico, it is only fitting that Wilson is also known for glass sculptures of Native American ceremonial dancers. The intricately costumed pieces have not only become prized additions to private collections, but were also given as official presentations from the state of New Mexico to visiting dignitaries such as King Juan Carlos of Spain, blues legend Bo Diddley, and Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Born in 1949 in Roswell, New Mexico, Wilson was part of a military family that moved frequently to places such as Dallas, Texas, then Morroco, North Africa, and on to Riverside, California. In 1960, 11-year-old Wilson moved with his family to Goose Bay, Canada, where he taught himself how to eat fire, juggle, throw knives and do various magic and circus tricks. In 1963 following a move to Albuquerque, New Mexico, he started learning Shotokan karate, receiving his first-degree black belt in 1969.  Joining the United States Air Force in 1970, Wilson was a medic during the Vietnam war, stationed at Cocoa Beach, Florida. During the slow hours of the night, he taught himself about glass through an old scientific glass blowing book he found in the Air Force base library. The medical lab was his studio and a Bunsen burner his equipment. There he made intricately woven animal figurines from 4 mm Pyrex stirring rods. Wilson's first real lessons in glass blowing came in 1973 under the tutelage of Alfonso and Tomas Arribas who had reportedly caught the attention of Walt Disney when the brothers represented Spain at the 1964–‘65 New York World's Fair. Wilson talked them into an apprenticeship at the Crystal Arts on Main Street, U.S.A at Disneyworld where he made thousands of crabs, teapots and birdbaths for the tourists. Mexican glass blower Miguil Bonilla, who also worked for Disney, was another of his mentors. Upon leaving the Air Force in 1974, Wilson went the following day to Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, to try to secure a job as a glassblower. There were no glassblowing openings, however they did have a vacancy for a juggler and fire-eater. For the next two years he worked with tattooed belly dancers, a magician, and an organ grinder and his monkey. Later that year, Wilson married, and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he opened his glass business, Crystal Myths.  In 1993, Wilson produced his first glassworking video, Glass Bead Making, and now has produced more than 20 titles. In 1996, Crystal Myths promoted its first show, The Best Bead Show, in Tucson, Arizona, earning him the nickname of “the P.T. Barnum of Beadmakers.” In 2002, Wilson promoted the world's largest hot glass competition called the Albuquerque Flame-Off. There, 300 glass workers from the U.S. and Canada worked on six torches running for 12 hours a day for two days.  In 2005, Wilson demonstrated at the Kobe International Lampworking Festival in Kobe, Japan, and only spoke Japanese, which he taught himself, during the demo. Later that year, a building was named after him at Art Glass Invitational in September, one of the highlights of his career.  Wilson sold the Best Bead Shows in 2008, re-emerging as a talented artist able to concentrate fully on lampworking. Later that year, at the Oakland ISGB convention, he was presented with the Hall of Flame Award. In 2011, Wilson married glass artist Barbara Svetlick with whom he founded Soft Glass Invitational, promoted for two years in Hilliards, Pennsylvania. In 2015, the event was given to Kris Schaible, and she continues to promote the event.  These days, Wilson spends the bulk of his time filling commissions and doing standard production work, with the remainder dedicated to new designs. He and his wife enjoy collaborating, which comprises about 10 percent of each artist's work. With Svetlick's flowers added to Wilson's glass sculpture or her sculpture incorporating his beads, the artwork benefits from the best of both worlds.

Venturing to a frozen lake in mid-winter, Josefin Waltin does something remarkable: She breaks the ice with a hatchet and climbs into the frigid water. And unlike an ice-bucket-challenge or polar bear dip, she does this every morning. With her head, feet, and hands covered in handspun wool knitwear, she looks pretty happy doing it, too. Although not everyone will take a dip in subzero temperatures, anyone who does should definitely wear wool for the adventure. Josefin is a spinner, knitter, and fiber artist who has made the decision to primarily use heritage breeds of Swedish sheep. Although these 10 heritage breeds are unique to Sweden, the story of local sheep disappearing in favor of softer, uniform imported wool is shared across the fiber world. Using these breeds not only preserves her cultural heritage but also helps her craft more sustainably. Besides using heritage breeds of wool, she practices traditional (almost endangered) Swedish crafts such as twined or two-end knitting (tvåändsstickning) and nålbinding. They are slow processes. As Josefin says, "That's a superpower." But drawing on the fiber world around her doesn't mean her interests are provincial. In one recent project, she combined the fleece of a Gestrike-breed ewe with a traditional knitting pattern from the High Atlas Mountains of Morroco. Using a Navajo-style spindle, she spun two colors of yarn and knitted them into a pair of warm snow-shoveling pants. Josefin is exploring fiber traditions besides spinning, knitting, and looping. Her annual wool traveling club is starting a two-year exploration of fulling, planning to visit a water-powered fulling mill and process their own handspun, handwoven fabric. Last year's traveling club exploration took them to the small village of Dala-Floda to learn påsöm embroidery, a rich and even bombastic embellishment tradition. (A wool traveling club sounds like a very good thing to have.) Through her online classes and explorations of the world of wool, Josefin inspires me to learn globally and spin locally. Bree gives her advise from a management position how Liz should approach the situation.  Even through drama, Liz was able to watch the full season of Wednesday on Netflix and she was obsessed. Bree brings up an thought provoking question, but this brings up how excited the girls are about the 90s style being back.  They are able to relive their childhood and they love it. Then they talk about the shit show of an episode this weeks Real Housewives of Miami was. Both Bree and Liz are not a fan this season of the normal “fan favorite” of Miami, but they are loving Nicole more and more every episode. Lastly Bree and Liz briefly talk about the recent news in the RHUGT filming in Morroco and also the Teen Mom news that came out about some past cast members. Tell us all your thoughts on Instagram @RelatableRealityPodcast SUBSCRIBE, DOWNLOAD, RATE AND COMMENT

Episode 236: Bang Head Here - Interview with Josh Brazier & Hollie Henderson - Part 1Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. What do you get when you bring together a woman who was an at-risk teen, with severe troubles in her family of origin, and a man who on his LDS mission to Morroco worked with thousands of African refugees who were abused by guards and eventually deported, despite all their struggles, to make a better life? What you get is a dynamic duo who have partnered together, after years of their own experience in social work - like violence prevention and humanitarian programs, to help families and troubled youth learn to communicate and solve pain points. You also get a new book called: Bang Head Here. Tune in because we are going to get into their stories, as well as the tremendous work they are doing and you'll definitely learn some things about communicating with your loved ones.Today's podcast is about a number of things. It's about how to communicate in families, especially with at-risk youth. It's about how to recognize the part we play, as parents and caregivers, in the miscommunications that occur. It's about sharing the life experiences of two people who have taken some traumatic experiences and turned them into skills to share and help families communicate better. It's ultimately about using what they know to help others along the path of building better life stories. We have a couple “guides” with us today. Let me introduce them:First, Hollie:Hollie has been training teens and adults for over twenty years. Her training work began in the field of violence prevention and dating violence prevention. Hollie has trained thousands of teens and young adults to recognize the warning signs that lead to violent and deadly relationships. She is an active parent & teen coach who specializes in working with at-risk teens and young adults and their parents. She understands the struggle and nuances of these relationships primarily because she once was an "at-risk teen" who has found a way to reconnection within a family structure that once was failing.Josh:With over 15 years of experience working with youth and family in over a dozen countries, Josh brings a very unique perspective to healing and family culture. Having worked alongside thousands of young people and having been inside hundreds of struggling households, Josh's experience has led to deep and powerful insights that help create a new path of healing. Having worked for the past decade creating social programs for youth in the US and abroad, Josh brings his 15 years of experience working with youth to help solve real pain points the youth are facing.Tune in to the audio program to hear about his story serving in Morocco on an LDS mission. In a Spanish provence there was a refugee camp where thousands of West Africans were coming up to create a better life in Europe. He was tasked with building a church and helping the refugees - creating an English speaking branch. He worked with these people building good spaces for them. The refugees had to deal with very difficult psychological issues, abuse from the guards physically, verbally, sexually abused - rape was an issue. The overcrowding was severe. In addition the refugees had the horrible struggles in their travels to actually get to where they were - friends being eaten by wild animals, drinking their own urine to survive on the trail, women having to sell their bodies. He grew very close to these people as he walked with them on this path. One day he got on his boat to go to mainland Spain with his branch, when they were all apprehended by local authorities and his entire branch was deported to their countries of origin. He never saw them again and the trauma of the event caused a great deal of personal struggle. He started his program to honor these people. It became
