Journalist and blogger Celia Farber started out covering the AIDS crisis in the 1980s as a staff writer for Spin Magazine. She went freelance in 1997 writing for Esquire, Harper's, Rolling Stone, Salon, Observer, and more. Her 2006 article in Harpers exposing the activities of Anthony Fauci at US NIAID was followed by a “career-ending” coordinated attack on her from the medical research establishment. She started her blog, The Truth Barrier, in 2009. It was attacked and taken down in 2020, and she has since relocated it to the Substack platform. Her books are Serious Adverse Events: An Uncensored History of AIDS (2023) and Sacrifice: How the Deadliest Vaccine in History Targeted the Most Vulnerable, With Dr. James Thorp (2025). Our guest this week, Alia Volz, wrote a book titled Home Baked: My Mom, Marijuana, and The Stoning of San Francisco about her experience growing up in San Francisco in the late 1970s and 80s. Alia's parents were the owners of Sticky Fingers Brownies which made pot brownies that were known all over the city. While these brownies were the source of relaxation and fun for many people, when HIV and AIDS hit San Francisco, Sticky Fingers became a lifeline for many gay men who were devastated by the disease because the pot brownies helped them with pain and appetite. The book covers a lot of territory, not the least of which is Alia's parents' backgrounds and what it was like for her to grow up in San Francisco in a family that couldn't really talk about what it did because of the illegal nature of their business. Her book was a 2020 finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography. It's a fascinating read which shows the social history leading to the legalization and wider use of cannabis for medical use in the US through the lens of her own family's story. Books Discussed in this Episode: 1- Home Baked: My Mom, Marijuana, and the Stoning of San Francisco by Alia Volz 2- Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews 3- The Stand by Stephen King 4- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 5- Dune by Frank Herbert 6- Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong by Paul Offitt 7- In Defense of Witches: The Legacy of the Witch Hunts and Why Women are Still on Trial by Mona Chollet 8- Daughters of Smoke and Fire by Ava Homa 9- The Haunting of Tram Car 015 (Dead Djinn Universe #0.3)by P. The scientific method is tried and true. It has led us to a reliable understanding of things from basic physics to biomedicine. So yes, we can rely on the scientific method. The fallible humans behind the research, not so much. And politicians? Don't get us started. Remember when one brought a snowball to the Senate floor to “prove” that global warming was a hoax? Oy vey. We talk to authors about new books that seem to cast a skeptical eye on the scientific method… but that are really throwing shade on the ambitious labcoat-draped humans who heat the beakers and publish the papers … as well as the pinstriped politicians who twist science to win votes. Find out why the hyper-competitive pursuit of results that are “amazing” and “incredible” is undermining medical science… how a scientific breakthrough can turn into a societal scourge (heroin as miracle cure)… and what happens when civil servants play the role of citizen scientists on CSPAN. Welcome to another episode of The Nightmare Feed, today we're going to talk about 'Mad Science' horror! Science gone wrong is a common theme in horror as it connects the audience through the plausibility of the science. Could some mechanized terror be just around the corner? Could some human/alien hybrid be loosed upon us all? The quasi reality behind the stories in this sub genre can compel the deep imagination. When Science Fiction and Horror intersect, it's almost always a treat. Indeed, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is considered to be the founding novel of science fiction and is largely considered to be one of the greatest horror stories ever written...

Straight Talk MD: Health | Medicine | Healthcare Policy | Health Education | Anesthesiology

I have Dr. Paul Offit in the virtual studio to discuss seven stories of science gone wrong. The seven discoveries were initially promoted as “stunning scientific breakthroughs” but each one turned out to have a dark side that was harmful to the human race. Some of these “stunning breakthroughs” still threaten the future of our species today.   In the final part of the interview, I ask Paul to comment on some of today’s high-profile health controversies: e-cigarettes, Bisphenol-A, PSA screening for prostate cancer, mammograms, and Genetically Modified Food, and question if perhaps we’re repeating this same “science-gone-wrong” history. Paul presents some practical advice on how we can avoid repeating these same kinds of mistakes as we tackle our top challenges in science and medicine today.

Dr. Paul Offit shows in his new book 'Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong' explores the most fascinating—and significant—missteps: from opium's heyday to the cries to ban DDT for the sake of the environment to an epidemic-level rise in world malaria. Unwitting errors add up to seven lessons both cautionary and profound, narrated by renowned author and speaker Paul A. Offit. Offit uses these lessons to investigate how we can separate good science from bad, using some of today's most controversial creations.
