In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Paul Offit discuss the MMR vaccine, the history of it, and the current decay of measles herd immunity today.  Many parents are refusing to vaccinate their children, referencing politicians, actors, and social activists who lack correct information regarding the vaccine.  Even if an unvaccinated child recovers from measles,  they may, years later, develop a fatal encephalitis from the measles virus that has hidden in their brains. Dr. Offit thus discusses not only the serious potential complications of measles during the illness but the risks of later and seemingly unrelated fatalities in the unvaccinated.     Key Takeaways: School vaccine mandates were born in the mid-1970s, especially in big cities, as outbreaks were often spread in schools. In a portion of children who recover from measles, the measles virus still remains hidden in the brain and can result in encephalitis. You have the right to make decisions about your own health, but you don't have the right to make your child a martyr for your cause. Many of those activating against vaccinations are still referencing an invalidated and retracted paper from 1998.   "Medicine's hard enough – there is so much we can't do - but this we can do! We can prevent this disease, so watching parents, knowingly, put their children in harm's way, and putting those their children come in contact with in harm's way, has been very hard to watch." —  Dr. Paul Offit   Connect with Dr. Paul Offit: Professional Bio: https://www.chop.edu/doctors/offit-paul-a  Book: Bad Advice: Or Why Celebrities, Politicians, and Activists Aren't Your Best Source of Health Information and More!   Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Vaccines are so successful that many people have never seen the diseases they prevent, resulting in misperceptions that vaccines are not needed. While anti-vaccination sentiment and misinformation increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, about 88% of Americans still say they feel the overall benefits of childhood vaccines outweigh the risks. Communicating vaccine science to the public is even more crucial than in times past. It's up to our doctors and medical experts to relay factual information that is backed by science and supported by research. Without receiving proper vaccinations, preventable diseases will keep recurring. In today's episode, we are joined by Paul Offit, MD, whose path toward infectious disease prevention started at the young age of 5 when a failed foot operation landed him in a hospital in suburban Baltimore for nearly six weeks. “If you're in a chronic care facility in the mid 1950s, because I was born in 1951, you're in a polio ward. So, I remember that,” Dr. Offit says. Now Dr. Offit is a professor of vaccinology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an attending physician in the division of infectious diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as well as the director of the Vaccine Education Center. “I think the scars of our childhood invariably become the passions of our adulthood. I think it's the reason I became a doctor, I think it's the reason my first book was about polio and the polio vaccine, I think it's why I went into infectious diseases,” Dr. Offit says. This episode was recorded at the 2023 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition in Washington, DC. Some highlights from the episode include:  Reasons why people have become so hesitant about vaccines Some of the biggest misconceptions and stigmas around vaccine science Why we need more societal trust in vaccines The role of mRNA How we can use communication to better our future For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org

Jonathan is one of our favorite authors, and his books “Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought” and “The Constitution of Knowledge -  A Defense of Truth” are heavily earmarked in both our bookshelves. We ask Jonathan to help us hold on to our values and ideals in the face of October 7th, when everything we thought we knew was challenged. We talk about moral courage, what the roles of universities should be, how silence can be weaponized to make us feel like a minority, and we draw some optimism from Jonathan's struggle for gay marriage – when it seemed like the whole world was against him.Why JR was not surprised by the reaction to October 7thAnd why it's good that the veil came offIt is your job to educate“Ohio State opposed Genocide” – does it matter? When massacre and rape are too controversial to condemnSwastika graffiti is too easy to condemnSpirals of silence and false consensus If you don't speak up – you lose. The parallels to Jonathan's fight for gay marriage Are idealism and policy incompatible? The amazing story of Frank KamenyFallibilism > skepticism. What JR missed when he wrote Kindly InquisitorsTwitter/X is an epistemic sewerCivic literacyThanks for the free publicity, craziesDon't rise to the bait of the craziest person. The person you need on your side is the quiet person in the middleOptimistic? In the 1980s, whilst the media stirred up frenzies over Satanists in our midst or a nuclear bomb landing in Washington, a reporter made a documentary adding vaccines to the growing list of dangers. Vaccine Roulette claimed the pertussis vaccine caused brain damage in kids, which led to a drop in immunizations, a rise in whooping cough, and a near-end to the production of vaccines. On Strange Country, cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about this antivax movement spawned during the time of leg warmers and Alf, and continues to impact the current vaccine hesitancy we see today. He says that he and his business partner enjoyed creating startups and found that, when his original B2C company grew, they didn't enjoy it as much. Eventually, he decided he wanted to become a founder, and they got quite lucky with the transition.“Our whole career really had been B2C companies, we never really worked B2B. Eventually we had this idea for a B2B business and I wish ten years ago someone had tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘Forget B2C businesses, there's this thing called B2B SaaS that's the greatest business model ever,' so I'm glad we made the switch.”Finding a Team to Build Your SaaS ProductAlex and his Co-Founder weren't programmers; they were product managers, so it was up to them to find engineers who could build their product. This meant they needed to know what they lacked and what customers actually wanted. By the time they were hiring, they knew exactly what it was they wanted and what they needed to build. “We weren't the ones that were going to build the product . What we found was it was our opportunity to really go and understand what we needed to build, what customers actually wanted to buy, so by the time we were hiring engineers it was very clear what we were going to build.”Raising Money From Outsiders: Good or Bad?One thing that gets overlooked when raising money for your business is this: once you've raised money from outsiders, it may breed some stagnation. You may find yourself stuck, or realizing that your business isn't all what you thought it would be. This puts you in a rather tricky position, because you have to do something with that money. So, before raising money from others, make sure you're absolutely certain your business idea is what you want.“What people forget is, the second you raise money from outsiders, you're stuck. People think of raising money as a good thing, but it's not, because once you've raised that money you're stuck for a couple of years trying to get that thing to work. It's much better at the beginning to spend less money and use your own funds if you can, figure out if you're convinced.”Your Friends Are Not Good CustomersWhether you like it or not, your friends are not good early customers, because they will feel like they have to be nice to you, especially if you give them a product for free. Rather, you should aim to give your product to people who are more inclined to be honest with you. Alex argues that friends of friends are better, because you're kind of connected to them but you don't really know them.“Your friends are probably not great early customers. The reason is that they want to be nice to you, especially if you don't make them pay for it, then they're not going to tell you the truth that it's terrible or something.”

Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom welcomes Dr. Paul Offit, Member of the FDA Advisory Committee and Director of Vaccine Education Center at CHOP, back onto the podcast to discuss the bleak news in the Nation's Report Card of massive drops in educational scores due to closures related to the Coronavirus pandemic. First, Dom asks Dr. Offit to take us inside the decision-making behind guidelines suggests for schools and children, with Offit telling what went into closing schools during the pandemic. Then, Giordano asks Offit what to expect moving forward, with Offit suggesting that the pandemic is over, so he wouldn't expect any closures similar to what happened in 2020. Then, Dom welcomes Joan Cullen, President of the Pennridge School District, to discuss the decision by the Department of Education to investigate the Central Bucks West School District due to an ACLU complaint over their decision to tighten restrictions around what can be taught concerning to gender and gender identity. The ACLU alleges that there is anti-LGBT discrimination taking place, with Giordano reading back some of the claims made in the complaint. Cullen explains what this means for school districts and parents, telling of the decision to be made regarding parental rights and whether they're able to know what's being taught to their children.

Coronavirus Update 69. Quick Hits and other musings - 1) In the interview with Dr. Offit there were a few big take aways: Boosters for non risk based teen and young adults are unlikely to provide benefit while offering a small but real level of risk from myocarditis Boosters are offering minimal benefit to the nation from a transmission perspective. At best 8-12 weeks of protection against symptomatic disease Dr. Offit voted against adding omicron antigens to this fall's booster as there was limited data that it would any benefit. He was in the minority at the FDA advisory meeting, thus this fall's booster will have new strain genetics in it The boosters could, not shown yet in humans, block future variant immunity to newer strains through viral immune imprinting A lot more this week to digest. Teen Innovator's New AI Tool Helps Create Affordable Drugs The U.S. has some of the highest prescription drug prices in the world, which can push patients into bankruptcy over medications they cannot afford. More than three in four American adults think the prices of prescription drugs are unaffordable, prompting the Senate to recently pass a bill intended to help lower prescription drug costs for seniors. One young innovator set out to find his own solution. 17 year-old Rishab Jain developed ICOR, a tool to improve the rapid production of drugs like COVID-19 vaccines. Ira talks with  Jain from Portland, Oregon, about his innovation and vision for the future.   When Trapping Invasive Bugs Is Science Homework The spotted lanternfly, an invasive species, was first introduced to the U.S. in Pennsylvania, around 2014. Since then, it has spread aggressively, and has now been spotted in 11 states. The bug is pretty—adult spotted lanternflies are about an inch long, and feature striking spotted forewings and a flashy red patch on the hindwings. But they are also very hungry, and pose a significant threat to agricultural crops, including grapevines. Many control efforts have focused on either stomping the insects on sight, or on spotting and destroying the egg masses that the lanternflies lay in the fall. However, researchers have been developing trapping techniques for the bugs as well. One, involving a sticky band looped around a tree, is effective—but can also snare other insects and even birds. Experts at the Penn State Extension have come up with a new style of circle trap for lanternflies, based upon an existing trap for pecan weevils. Now, STEM educators at Rutgers University are using that design as the starting point for an engineering design challenge, asking K-12 teachers and students to come up with improvements to the design. Read the rest at sciencefriday.com. Should Kids Get Vaccinated If They've Already Had COVID-19? It's nearing the end of August, which means it's back-to-school season. There's a big difference between this school year and last: All children are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. This means the risk of disease will likely be way down, compared to the past two autumns, according to vaccine researcher and pediatrician Paul Offit. But for kids who have already been infected by COVID-19, will the vaccine add meaningful immunity? “My answer to that question is yes,” Dr. Offit tells Ira. “Then you can be sure that they will then develop the kind of immunity that will likely lead to fairly long-lived protection against serious illness.” Ira and Dr. Offit also discuss the risk of monkeypox and polio spreading in schools, and how to best keep our kids safe against infectious disease this fall.   The Countdown Begins For Humanity's Return To The Moon NASA's largest and most powerful rocket ever began inching its way to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Tuesday night. Over twelve years in the making, the long-delayed, over-budget Space Launch System rocket is finally nearing its first chance for liftoff at the end of this month. The August 29th targeted launch will mark the beginning of the Artemis program—NASA's series of missions designed to send humans to the Moon and, eventually, Mars. The multi-billion dollar orange rocket now stands taller than the Statue of Liberty, resembling a colossal upside-down carrot. Its maiden uncrewed flight will carry a trio of mannequins equipped with radiation sensor vests in preparation for crewed flights slated for 2024. These future missions will be the first to return people to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
