This week on CounterSpin: When Robert Kennedy Jr. was just a famously named man about town, we heard about how he dumped a bear carcass in Central Park for fun, believes that children's gender is shaped by chemicals in the water, and asserts that Covid-19 was “targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people,” while leaving “Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese” immune. But once you become RFK Jr., secretary of health and human services in a White House whose anger must not be drawn, those previously unacceptable ideas become, as a recent New York Times piece has it, “unorthodox.” Kennedy's unorthodox ideas may get us all killed while media whistle. We hear from Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, about that. For many years, social justice advocates rather discounted the Federal Communications Commission. Unlike the Federal Trade Commission or the Food and Drug Administration, whose actions had visible impacts on your life, the FCC didn't seem like a player. That changed over recent years, as we've seen the role the federal government plays in regulating the power of media corporations to control the flow of information. As the late, great media scholar Bob McChesney explained, “When the government grants free monopoly rights to TV spectrum … it is not setting the terms of competition; it is picking the winner.” We'll talk about the FCC under Trump with Jessica González, co-CEO of the group McChesney co-founded, Free Press. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Paul Offit discuss the MMR vaccine, the history of it, and the current decay of measles herd immunity today. Many parents are refusing to vaccinate their children, referencing politicians, actors, and social activists who lack correct information regarding the vaccine. Even if an unvaccinated child recovers from measles, they may, years later, develop a fatal encephalitis from the measles virus that has hidden in their brains. Dr. Offit thus discusses not only the serious potential complications of measles during the illness but the risks of later and seemingly unrelated fatalities in the unvaccinated. Key Takeaways: School vaccine mandates were born in the mid-1970s, especially in big cities, as outbreaks were often spread in schools. In a portion of children who recover from measles, the measles virus still remains hidden in the brain and can result in encephalitis. You have the right to make decisions about your own health, but you don't have the right to make your child a martyr for your cause. Many of those activating against vaccinations are still referencing an invalidated and retracted paper from 1998. "Medicine's hard enough – there is so much we can't do - but this we can do! We can prevent this disease, so watching parents, knowingly, put their children in harm's way, and putting those their children come in contact with in harm's way, has been very hard to watch." — Dr. Paul Offit Connect with Dr. Paul Offit: Professional Bio: https://www.chop.edu/doctors/offit-paul-a Book: Bad Advice: Or Why Celebrities, Politicians, and Activists Aren't Your Best Source of Health Information and More! The Biden administration treated Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky as a near deity, a heroic figure inspiring his underdog nation to repel the invading Russian hordes. Now that Trump has assumed power, the dynamic has changed and Zelensky is being described by the U.S. President in very different terms — as a “loser” and a dictator who refuses to hold elections that might challenge his position. Jimmy and Col. Macgregor discuss the reality of Zelensky that Americans have been denied by the mainstream, corporate hagiographic news media seeking to prop up Ukraine in the fight against Russia. Plus segments on Zelensky and Ukraine being snubbed by the U.S. over peace negotiations, Zelensky's pledge to ignore any diplomatic arrangement that doesn't include Ukrainian input and health officials Deborah Birx and Paul Offit admitting that COVID policy wasn't based on science. What is "fiat science"? It's what you get when the state creates a lot of money out of thin air, then hands out bunches of it to scientific establishments, where decisions are made not on the basis of market forces, but on the basis of political ones.I speak with genetics expert and founder and CSO of Medicinal Genomics, Kevin McKernan, about why fiat science is a problem, the utter failure of the regulatory state, what needs to change – and what is starting to change. If you're still saying "peer-reviewed" like it's a good thing, you might want to take a listen. Our previous conversations about the problems with medical research and peer review in particular, are here and here.Kevin's Substack is here....and the post where he discusses Rebekah Barnett's FOIA reporting, and showcases Dr. Paul Offit's lies, is here. The UNITAID/Andrew Hill story can be found here and here. You can find Kevin on Twitter, here.Kevin's NCI (National Citizens Inquiry) Testimony is here. And you can learn about CannMed here.
The COVID-19 pandemic started with a bang - lockdowns, grocery store shelves cleared of their goods, toilet paper shortages, and a pervasive sense of panic. But more recently, it has slowly faded into the background for many of us. The WHO says that while we're no longer in crisis mode, we are still in a pandemic. What does that mean for us in our daily lives? In this TPWKY book club episode, we're joined by Dr. Paul Offit to discuss his recent book Tell Me When It's Over: An Insider's Guide to Deciphering COVID Myths and Navigating our Post-Pandemic World [Interview recorded February 21, 2024]. Dr. Offit, who is a pediatrician, vaccine expert, vaccine co-inventor (rotavirus), member of vaccines advisory committees, and long-time vaccine advocate, explains some of the COVID disinformation that continues to circulate about the virus, discusses where government institutions went wrong during the early months of the pandemic, and what we can expect now that the pandemic is no longer the public health emergency it once was. Tune in for a fascinating reflection on where we are in the pandemic today and how we can all fight against the rise in anti-science that threatens the future of public health. There were 58 reported cases of measles in the U.S. during all of 2023. But there's already been 41 cases across 16 states so far this year. The outbreak of this highly contagious virus is cause for concern for many public health departments. Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician specializing in virology and immunology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, joins William Brangham to discuss. The United States eliminated measles back in 2000, but it still pops up every now and then. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 35 measles cases across 15 states had been reported this year as of February 22. Early last month, a measles outbreak began at an elementary school in Broward County, in southern Florida. As of February 28, the Florida Department of Health reported 9 cases for Broward County—out of 10 for the whole state.Measles is one of the most infectious diseases in the world, and it has a safe and effective vaccine called MMR—for measles, mumps, and rubella—that saves lives. Kids usually get the vaccine early in life, and it provides lifelong protection. But childhood vaccination rates have declined in some areas, so preventable diseases like measles are on the rise. In Florida, the state's surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, has been criticized for how he's handling the outbreak—for example, by not explicitly encouraging parents to get their kids vaccinated. So how did the measles outbreak in Florida get to this point? And is it a reflection of a broader public health risk?Ira talks with pediatrician Dr. Rana Alissa, who is vice president of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and an associate professor at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. He is also joined by Dr. Paul Offit, pediatrician and director of the vaccine education center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Am I contagious? U.S. health officials have dropped five-day isolation guidelines for people who get covid, prompting a mix of relief and confusion. Today, The Post's Lena Sun breaks down what's behind the shift. Plus, the latest on measles in Florida. On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that, effective immediately, people who test positive for the coronavirus no longer need to stay home for five days. Instead, the agency recommends that you stay home when sick, but if symptoms improve and you're fever-free for at least 24 hours without taking any meds, you no longer have to isolate. The updated guidelines put covid-19 in line with many other viral respiratory diseases. For many, the change is both practical and overdue. Yet, covid continues to send thousands of people to the hospital each week, causing some 2,000 deaths, further raising alarms among high-risk patients.Today on “Post Reports,” Lena Sun, who covers infectious diseases and public health, unpacks what's behind the new guidance, how to stay healthy, and why the response to a completely different infectious disease – measles – is sounding new alarms. Read more:When you have covid, here's how you know you are no longer contagious. What to know about the recent measles outbreak, and signs to watch for.CDC recommends older adults get 2nd updated coronavirus shot.Dr. Paul Offit also spoke with Lena Sun about his new book, "Tell Me When It's Over,” for this episode and for The Health 202 newsletter. Today's show was produced by Emma Talkoff, with help from Elana Gordon. It was mixed by Sean Carter. It was edited by Maggie Penman. Thanks to Fenit Nirrapil. Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000. Fast forward to 2019 and the nation experienced the largest number of cases since 1992. Globally, there were 207,000 measles deaths that year, a 50% increase since 2016. The anti-vax boom time was still to come. Andrew Wakefield, Del Bigtree, and RFK Jr. massively increased their exposure and salaries during Covid via pseudoscientific fear-mongering and promiscuous political alliances. Scott Kennedy's new documentary, Shot in the Arm, details the deadly impact of these anti-vax kingpins, as well as the tireless counter-efforts of scientists, medical workers, and science educators like Peter Hotez, Paul Offit, Karen Enrst, and Blimi Marcus. Scott joins Derek and Julian to discuss the past and future of the anti-vax movement. Show Notes Shot in the Arm Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Paul Offit, M.D., recently spoke out against religious exemptions on a recent podcast, specifically criticizing ICAN's legal efforts to see religious exemptions reinstated in the 5 states which currently do not have them. At the same time, the vaccine maker and FDA advisor has taken a stance against recommending the COVID booster for people under 65 which, according to the Merriam-Webster's definition of the slanderous term, makes Dr. Offit an anti-vaxxer himself.
Jonas Salk's polio vaccine transformed America and the world in ways that seemed unimaginable. But in 1955, there was a moment when everything was in doubt. In this 191st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. In this episode we discuss climate science, models, and assumptions. How do urban heat, and assumptions of low vs high solar variability, affect climate models? Should apparent consensus among climate scientists give one pause? Are non-scientist humans capable of thinking for themselves? We discuss the difference between the environment, and climate, and discuss Apple's new video starring Mother Nature herself. Finally, we review the move, in Canadian school libraries, to get rid of books published before 2008.
