My beauty doesn't come through in photos. Or in person. So says Shaun Eli, professional comedian, in part 2 of his interview with Boomer. Shaun continues addressing how humor develops, how he crafts his performance, deals with difficult audience members, and whether or not comedians in general are cursed with troubled interpersonal relationships.
What does making people laugh have to do with influence and persuasion? Quite a lot really. Comedy and humour can be very useful tools in your influence and persuasion toolkit when employed well and sadly, it's an area that is often overlooked in studies on influence and persuasion. It can be a powerful rapport tool. We tend to like people who can make us laugh and we are more likely to remember things when we find them funny. Being able to vary the emotional experience of your audience is one of the hallmarks of a confident and experienced speaker. Humour requires looking at the world a little differently. Not everyone will feel humour is for them but even a small chuckle or groan-worthy dad joke in a presentation can lighten the mood and expand the emotional journey of your audience. My guest Shaun Eli helps us out with some ways we can add some humour into our social, professional and public interactions. In this episode:The importance of being a clean comedian (if you can be)making humour through storytellingConnecting and engaging with people through humourHow to make your audience feel it's all about themSimple ways to add humour to a presentationWhy a comedy class could be just what you needThe big difference between a professional speaker and a comedianThe three steps to making a jokeand more besides. As Shaun states during the episode, our chat wasn't packed with jokes. We talked humour but not so much the jokes, so if you want to see Shaun in action, and he is indeed a funny guy, you can visit his website BrainChampagne.com and you can connect with Shaun if you'd like him to help make your talks and presentations more entertaining. On my next show, we're talking about influential storytelling with the fantastic Kurian Tharakan. Don't miss that and other amazing guests coming up to help you master the tools of ethical influence and persuasion. You can support the show for as little as $5USD a month, helping me being more amazing guests to you and improving the production and editing quality of the show. There is also a membership level that gives you exclusive access to me and my guests and also sponsorship opportunities. If none of those options suits you, you can still support the show by sharing out your favourite episodes to your network.Support the show (https://speakinginfluence.supercast.tech/)
"I wanted to date my doctor, but she said it was unethical for doctors to date patients. I get it, especially for pediatricians and veterinarians," says Shaun Eli, writer for Jay Leno and other comedians. Laugh along as Shaun talks to Boomer about how jokes evolve, how do comedians come up with new humor, and how to handle different and difficult audiences.
The business of being funny is quite an odd career path. While it involves writing jokes and performing them for strangers in an audience, it's quite a hustle. Stand-up comic, Shaun Eli, breaks down how went from being a full-time banker to a full-time comedian. Part of our NEW! Odd Jobs series. Shaun Eli Breidbart is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. You can watch his videos and read some of his writings, including satirical political essays and hundreds of jokes he's written for late-night television, on his website BrainChampagne.com where his slogan “Brain Champagne: Clever Comedy for Smart Mindssm” rings true. Shaun Eli has rightfully been called one of America's smartest comics. Whether it's a story about dining with a vegetarian or successfully fighting a parking ticket, master storyteller Shaun Eli shows you that there's hilarity in the ordinary if you approach life with a comedic warp. Job interviews? Serving on the NYC criminal jury? How about the Ten Commandments? For just about anything he's experienced Shaun has a hilarious story at the ready. With a sense of humor, that's both cheerful and universal Shaun has headlined shows on five continents. His jokes have been quoted everywhere from the New York Post to Readers Digest to Healthcare Finance News. In both Reform Judaism magazine and the Christian Science Monitor, where he was the subject of the cover story. He's been featured on CareerBuilder.com and CNN, in local papers like the Scarsdale Inquirer and the Asbury Park Press and in the college papers the Yale Daily News and the Daily Pennsylvanian. Even in The Journal of Irreproducible Results, a scientific humor magazine. Yes, there is one. And his group The Ivy League of Comedy was the subject of a front-page story in the Philadelphia Inquirer. More than just smart, funny, and clever, Shaun is determined to express his opinion passionately, not surprising for someone who wrote his first satirical essay at age ten. When profiled in Fortune magazine “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno quoted one of Shaun's jokes, citing it as an example of the type of “smart comedy” he's happy to include in his opening monologue. Jay and other late-night hosts used Shaun's topical material in their monologues for almost two decades. Outside the world of comedy, Shaun was a world-class athlete in two obscure sports (rowing and dragon-boat racing), worked as a lifeguard instructor, and is an instrument-rated pilot. He is also an award-winning economic forecaster who once sold his car to a hitchhiker. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/odell-glenn-jr/support
