Novel Demonstration Kits for Fundamental Mechanical Engineering Concepts

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2023 60:17

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina offers academic programs and research opportunities in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and nuclear engineering led by experienced faculty. USC-ME is a Tier 1 research department, ranked #31 nationally and #1 in the state by the National Research Council. The Mechanical Engineering Department at UofSC is among the front-runners in innovation and technology and boasts one of the largest mechanical engineering programs in South Carolina. With approximately 900 undergraduate students, 180 graduate students and 34 full-time faculty, 5 full-time instructors, and 11 staff members, the department provides world-class, diverse, interdisciplinary, and cutting-edge engineering education to our students. High-quality engineering education is a key activity conducted within the Mechanical Engineering Department at UofSC across a range of courses ranging from introductory general engineering skills to highly specialized cutting-edge concepts. It is critical that students are well-educated in the fundamental concepts of general and mechanical engineering so that they can be developed into competent, successful engineers to make meaningful contributions to the engineering community. Mechanical engineering students, Annsley Gray, Michele Lunga, Matt Moore, and Evan Watson under the direction of the course instructor, Dr. Joshua Gray, corporate sponsor, Dr. Subramani Sockalingam, and faculty advisor, Dr. Odell Glenn, created a project entitled "Novel Demonstration Kits for Fundamental Mechanical Engineering Concepts" aimed to create a learning environment that would prove successful for students attempting to pass two historically rigid classes in the mechanical engineering department to further their degree achievement. The senior design team developed in-class demonstration kits incorporating novel approaches on the following key concepts related to EMCH 200, Statics and EMCH 260, Solid Mechanics: Force and moment equilibrium, Moment of inertia, Friction, Stress-strain, Mohr's circle, Beam bending, Torsion, and Material failure. The team engaged in weekly meetings with the project sponsor and faculty mentor, market research, as well as interaction with students in these courses. Product Specifications were established through discussion and student testimonials during EMCH 200 classes and Supplemental instruction sessions. Ensuring that these needs are met will guarantee the project sponsor and their goal of consumer satisfaction. The three design concepts were #1, "The Length Game Design". Students will use the torque along the length of a wrench (also known as the moment arm) to find the force exerted on the wrench. The mechanical engineering students constructed the wrench from pre-manufactured ratchets.  The topics covered in this game are torque, mechanical advantage, and moment. Three topics for which concepts have been considered difficult for students to initially grasp. The 2nd design concept entitled "Seasaw Demonstration"  Moments and equilibrium design concepts were implemented here. Students used a 3D-printed design with premanufactured weights. In this design, students are given an unknown weight and a known length ratio for each side. They will then use the force balance equation to determine the weight needed on the other side to balance the seesaw.   Design #3 was entitled "3D Vector Plot Diagram". Visualizing 3-D can be very difficult for students to grasp especially in freshman and sophomore-level courses. Here students use strings on a smaller-scaled 3-D cube to simulate the x, y, and z-axis. The goal is to get students to visualize 3-D components. All 3 of these designs have been developed and are ready to be implemented in classrooms for trial testing. Annsley Gray is a senior mechanical engineering student having internship experience in manufacturing settings with reliability engineering and will be working at Sylvamo Paper Mill as a reliability engineer post-graduation. Michele Lunga, also, our team leader and coordinator, has an eye for detail and organization. She plans to continue with manufacturing and design after graduation. Matt Moore is a senior mechanical engineering student who plans to pursue a career in the aerospace or automotive field, as well as pursue music on the side. Evan Watson is a senior mechanical engineering student and has a strong interest in hands-on engineering and problem-solving. Each of these students will graduate in either Fall of 2022 or the Spring of  2023. I have had the distinct pleasure of instructing these students during the rigor of Engineering Statics, Engineering Solids, Engineering Dynamics, Engineering Lab II, and Fluid Mechanics as well as their present advisor for the final Senior Design. To witness the year-long final assessment and implementation of rigorous coursework in a design project from these students was nothing less than amazing.

In 2008 the real estate crash took Daniel out and he lost everything. He turned to drink and had nothing. He lost the house the cars, the toys, the money, and worst of all...custody of his children. After he got sober he started back into the business. He jumped back into the mortgage business and had massive financial success. Searching for his purpose, he then became a Coach, where he trained Realtors on lead gen and sales. And yet even after he had achieved all his goals and had all of the money he wanted (he had the house, the cars, the toys, the family life) he was still unfulfilled. He felt empty. This is when God stepped in...he told Daniel that his purpose was much bigger than what we were doing and that if he had the courage to listen to his direct guidance, he would be massively emotionally fulfilled and finally be living his true calling. This is where Godspeed with Daniel and this powerful App that connects people and puts people in direct conversation with God, called The God Walk App, was born. Now he lives a life of true fulfillment, a life most men could only dream of, not only having the money, the body, and health, the love of his life but also waking up every day talking with God and living his true purpose making a massive impact on the World.

Moshe believes that the best time to start is when you are younger and wants to encourage more people to go after their dreams.  Moshe decided to write this book because of his passion for helping others. He wants to support and encourage young people to create something for their own. In this vein, Moshe wants to change the way people perceive starting businesses and encourage more people to do so. Often described as a creative and out-of-the box thinker, there is no problem that he is not willing to take head on. This passion drives him to relentlessly pursue not just the easy answer; but to find long lasting solutions to problems. Having a well-rounded experience of many different subjects allows Moshe to understand the daily struggles of all people and come up with solutions to problems that are laser focused. Overall, Moshe loves to see people succeed.  In STARTERMINDSET, Moshe Goldstein interview 14 young (16-25 year old) professionals, each coming from unique and diverse backgrounds; who tell their stories and share their motivations to succeed. These stories range across all industries showing that, with the right mindset and motivation, prosperity is within reach.  In his book, you will discover where to go with your concept and the steps needed to create a lifelong career. Their experiences show the power of everyday people to encourage significant and lasting change in society. In the world today, opportunities are abundant for those who have the initiative and take that first step---STARTERMINDSET proves just that.  You can order a copy of the book on Moshe Goldstein's website at  www.statermindset.com

Jamal Jivanjee- Amazon best selling author, podcaster and full time life coach

Jamal Jivanjee is a best-selling author, podcaster, and full-time life coach. As an author with over 25 years of experience working with people in various stages of personal struggle and challenges, after traveling to many cultures around the globe, and now as a full-time life coach, Jamal has discovered the common roots of human suffering along with the sustainable solutions required to help people become liberated and empowered. Jamal is passionate about serving individuals, couples and groups on the path toward enlightenment, wholeness and liberation.  Though helping to identity and clear energetic systems of belief that create fear, disharmony and disease, Jamal seeks to restore awareness of the ever present and unitive divine flow of abundance, good will and love that exist for us all physically, mentally and spiritually. Jamal was raised in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in a religious home, his father a devout Muslim and his mother an equally staunch Catholic. is parents were bound by their intellectual curiosity and their shared passion for books, which they passed along to their son. Driven in part by his voracious appetite for meaning and significance, Jamal came to the faith in Christ as a young adult and heard the call to ministry. He served as the pastor of his local church for a number of years until his personal journey eventually led him away from institutional religion altogether. Jamal started his work life as a corrections officer, then reemerged as the leader of his local church before ultimately transforming into a life-coach and writer. The path he traveled might seem random at first glance, but his explanation of exactly what he learned from each profession makes it clear that each step taken would not have occurred without the experience of the previous step. While interacting with prisoners, Jamal discovered that he loved working with people who were in desperate need of help due to a life of hardship. From that point on, each subsequent move he took made perfect sense in the evolution of becoming who is he today. Jamal's evolution is relevant to countless Americans' paths today. Thousands quite their jobs en masse in The Great Resignation after coming to a collective epiphany that the pandemic forced them to discover. They weren't happy. We all know that jobs or careers can leave us feeling unfulfilled, but should they leave us feeling downright miserable? A recent Pew Research Center survey found that low pay, a lack of opportunities for advancement and feeling disrespected at work were the top reasons why Americans quit their jobs. The survey also found that those who quit and are now employed elsewhere are more likely than not to say their current job has better pay, more opportunities for advancement and more work-life balance and flexibility. Why does it take something enormous like a global pandemic for us to declare that we deserve better? Jamal likes to ask those who are looking for guidance -- what if you were told by your doctor that you had six months to live? How would your day today change? How much time and energy would you spend on drama and arguing with others? The point he makes is that we must not waste time waiting for the weekend or a vacation, much less retirement or even the promise of heaven itself. Living needs to begin today. Jamal Jivanjee's many services can be found on his website at www.jamaljivanjee.com.

Pam Hill received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a minor in Political Science from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She went on to receive her master's degree in International Development and Finance from Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. Today she is an entrepreneur and CEO of a multi-million-dollar real-estate company, a business and money expert, a former Fortune-500 executive, and founder of My Smart Cousin.  Pam's main goal is to help Black and Brown folks, and especially women, understand their money, increase their accountability and build generational wealth.   Growing up, her mother told her on how she got her interested in math by telling her that people could cheat her out of her allowance otherwise. “Really?!” she said wide-eyed, hugging her cigar-box bank with its cache of pennies, quarters and dimes to my chest. “Really,” she said with finality, plucking a few nickels from the box to show the dastardly ease with which such crimes could be committed. From then on math became Pam's new best friend as she used fingers, toes and everything else to count her haul from flower seed sales in elementary school, candy in junior high and earnings from jobs and businesses.    For most of us, talking about math is about as much fun as getting our last two teeth pulled.   First, most of the math one need to know to run a business and understand numbers is grade-school math— that's right, good ol' fashioned ‘rithmetic. Second, research shows that the anxiety many women and Black and Brown folks have about math is based on society (affectionately known as, The Man) constantly telling us that numbers are just not for us. But research also tells us that women investors and diverse team outperform White-men only teams. So, take a deep breath, and stick with Pam, because you can do this — you can do the kind of math you need to level-up your entire life. The biggest recurring theme Pam sees with folks in the six-figure income category is that while they know their way around business and money topics at a high-level (let the choir say, Amen!), we don't know the ins and outs of our money.  That is, how much money are we keeping of the money that we're making? Or, how much do we own, really own (read, no credit card or loans on it)? And the reasons are varied, but usually some combination of: We're scurred: that's right, quaking-in-our-boots don't-tell-nobody scurred to see what's going on with our finances. We don't know where to start: that's legit— see above section about The Man holding us down. Our accountant/bookkeeper/financial advisor is handlin' it: this is the worst of all reasons. Your accountant/bookkeeper/advisor's job is to put your numbers in a report every week or month. Your job is to open said report (yes, I know, kinda obvious, but I know some of y'all out there don't do even this much), analyze it, compare it against your financial goals (note, goals are not, ‘I want to be rich') and build your wealth accordingly. This is the driving force behind My Smart Cousin. As a money expert and former Chief Financial Officer of a $1 billion company, Pam's goal is to help you cozy-up to your finances, understand exactly what they're telling you, and develop a business and wealth roadmap based on your numbers, with weekly check-ins, so that you can know your numbers like the boss that you already are in your business and life, and build real wealth.

But things were not all they seemed to be … Neil was facing a lot of challenges. In a phrase, he was in a dark place. Quite by accident, he discovered a Higher Road. As he traveled that road, he found the key to transforming his life. Over the course of the following year, Neil lifted himself to an inner state of love, peace, joy, and abundance. His perspectives on life changed entirely. His troubles and tribulations were his impetus to find the key that enabled him to revolutionize his life. He learned that the search for a better life does not entail positive thinking, saying affirmations, chanting mantras, or traveling to India to sit at the feet of a guru—or any other popularized method of “finding yourself.” …The key? To ascend in both spiritual perception and truth, you need to use the right process to break through your entrenched, human-ego barriers. For nearly three decades, Neil read hundreds of self-help and spiritual books and took self-development courses. All of them offered hope for change and improvement, but nothing fulfilled his needs or genuinely delivered on its promises. Neil's desire—and his new mission in life—is to share the knowledge he gained and the process he used on his journey to self-awareness, together with the blueprint document he discovered that was instrumental in transforming his life. He wants to give you, regardless of your station in life, the tools and opportunity to empower yourself, transform your life, and draw peace, joy, love, and prosperity into your personal situation and environment. Neil believes that as more and more people follow this Higher Road to true spiritual perfection, a New Era of Love and Peace will dawn for everyone throughout the world.

Garry Cox, retired educator and poet released a new poetry book, “Coffee with the Bard: 2020 Blues.” This book provides deep reflections from the challenges of the past year and gives readers hope for the future. Cox wrote “Coffee with the Bard: 2020 Blues” during the coronavirus pandemic. Rooted in love, this book begins with the poem, I Had a Life, dedicated to the memory of his late wife Bernice. “For years, I wrote a poem every morning for Bernice on a dry erase board at home, before I left for work. She enjoyed the poems and they let her know how much I loved her.  I hope this book inspires others to read and write poetry for people they love as well.” Finding poetry as an outlet during challenging times is common. In a New York Times article, title Broadway is Closed. Write Poems Instead.  Sarah Ruhl explains, “During the 1590s plague, when the theaters were shut, William Shakespeare apparently chose to write poems instead.”  Additionally, an article in The Atlantic, by Daniel Pollack – Pelzner titled, Shakespear Wrote His Best Work During a Plague explains,“he (Shakespear) published his popular narrative poem, Venus and Adonis” during a catastrophic time. Similarly, “Coffee with the Bard:2020 Blues” is Cox's most creative work to date. It is his third poetry book in the past five years. His other books include “The Waters of Appanoose County” and “Beyond the Waters.” Although this book is written with the same passion,  it is different from his first two books, because it combines poetry with visual art. Each new section of the book begins with a visually creative piece that lets readers into the mind of the author. “Coffee with the Bard: 2020 Blues” is available on Amazon in ebook and paperback formats. Cox also has a forthcoming audiobook that will be available soon.   To learn more about Garry Cox work visit  www.garrycox.com and connect with him on Facebook  @Garry L Cox and Instagram @garryl.cox.

Ms. Ausburn has spent more than 30 years as a social worker, foster parent, criminal prosecutor, and civil trial attorney. Her experience includes successful cases before the United States Supreme Court in constitutional claims, extensive work in free speech and religious freedom issues, and dozens of successful jury trials. That experience has given her a national presence with organizations that serve young people. Ms. Ausburn's background has given her unique insights into defending child care centers, camps, schools, and mentoring organizations. She has volunteered with and defended youth-serving organizations throughout the United States in matters as diverse as personal injury cases, intrusive government regulations, libel and slander issues, and claims of sexual abuse. She has conducted numerous investigations of claims of historic child abuse and sexual assault or harassment claims.  She also advises youth-serving organizations about child protection policies, staff screening, conduct standards, cyberbullying, and best practices for protecting the children in their care. Prior to joining Taylor English, Ms. Ausburn worked with well-respected civil litigation firms defending personal injury claims against youth-serving organizations and medical facilities as well as defending child care centers and private schools in disputes with state and federal governments. She served as a federal prosecutor in Western North Carolina, prosecuting cases of sexual assault, child abuse, and drug trafficking. She has worked with non-profit legal foundations defending free speech, religious liberties, and property rights in various federal courts. What is very unique about Debbie is that she makes her living as a lawyer, but takes care of other people's children. For more than 40 years, she has been working with traumatized children, starting as a preteen helping her parents with their summer camp and church ministries.  In the years since, she has served as a juvenile court probation officer/social worker, group home parent, criminal prosecutor, non-profit volunteer and Board member, and attorney defending youth-serving organizations.   ‍ Her most important roles have been foster parent and stepparent. She never had biological children but has managed to collect 7 children and 10 grandchildren. Along the way, her foster children, stepchildren, and grandchildren have taught her the life lessons that are the core of her speaking and writing — the lessons that she wished she could have learned from a parenting manual rather than trial and error.

When Lucille graduated high school in 1940, she moved to New York. She knew her younger siblings wanted to go to college, but she also knew her parents who were poor farmers, could not do it alone.  Consequently, she convinced her parents to let her go to New York to work and she sent money home to help her family for many, many years; even until her parents death. Lucille has lived in New York for 80 years!! During her time in New York, Lucille held several jobs. Her first job was to work for a family as the live-in help.  Shortly after that she began working in the Fashion District for the owner of a fur coat store.  On more than one occasion, she was asked to model, but because of distrust of "the fast life" (as she called it), she never took that job. Other jobs Lucille had included working at an undergarment factor and eventually R.C. Green Day Care, where she retired in 1982.  Lucille met and eventually married Ralph Swain and they had an incredible life until his death in 1994. Lucille loves traveling and over the years have had cruises to the Caribbean Islands, Jamaica, and Mexico.  She has also visited Atlantic City, Hawaii, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia--just to name a few. Lucille is the oldest of three surviving sisters: Gladys, Ruth, and Grace. Though she never had children of her own, her sister Grace's oldest daughter Dr. Wandy Taylor, became her godchild and they are as close as any parent and child could possibly be.  Lucille loves her family and she loves the Lord. Her mantra is to "treat everyone the way you want to be treated." On May 27, 2020, Lucille Swain became the first in her family to reach this centenarian milestone.

She ended a tumultuous high school career with a baby bump and fought her way to the graduation stage with a 4-month-old baby on her hip. Following graduation Keisha and her boyfriend got their own place and raised their son together. Their bliss would prove to be short lived. By the time Keisha was 23 her boyfriend was murdered and she became a single mother with no idea how to manage on her own. The next year she lost the apartment, her car and her job. Admittedly, she spent quite a while in a state of depression doing absolutely nothing to help herself. One day as if a switch was flipped, she got up and decided to become more. More for herself and more for her son. On a whim, she took on a job as a car saleswoman and seemingly found her niche. She climbed the ladder from newbie, to salesperson of the year, to sales manager in an industry that did not regularly promote people of her gender or shade. The lifestyle she came to afford for herself and her son was one she never imagined. However, Keisha knew there were others like her. People who had been dealt a bad hand and could not quite find their way out of a terrible situation. She felt a tug leading her from personal upliftment to uplifting those around her. She started a non-profit geared toward uplifting and providing basic needs for the children in her community, speaks in public forums to inspire adults that their miseries are actually building blocks for their greatness and has authored a book detailing her journey and providing a road map for salespeople and overcomers alike.  Her book entitled "Close or be Closed"  is an insider look at automotive sales and the personal journey of a teen mother who used the industry to change her and her child's life. Each chapter begins with sales strategies, while seamlessly incorporating Keisha's tumultuous journey from poverty stricken to earning more than she ever imagined. She aims to inspire others that their current situation looks nothing like their final destination if they keep pressing forward. She hones in on the fact that every part of your journey is designed for the greater you. The good, the bad, the miserable are all working for your good.

Now, she helps those working in non-profits, leverage their passion to change the world and become, what she calls, humanitarian entrepreneurs.  Tiffany talks to us about "the humanitarian approach" for success.  She challenges the audience to find passion. What lights you up? How do you envision making the world a little better?  Secondly, we must have a successful plan. Thinking creatively and outside the box and drafting a specific business plan for your success. Thirdly, embrace your uniqueness. In order to be successful, one needs to be able to take a look at who they are and address any limiting beliefs that arise to eliminate self-sabotage.  Lastly, realize that nonprofit mentality can deeply permeate one's way of thinking with guilt and shame. It becomes imperative that one is able to work through this and not have this perception hold you back.
