Hope you like it a little light and a little dark! This week's episode kicks off with some casual fashion talk before taking a sharp turn into the biggest April Fool's joke that wasn't—Val Kilmer's passing. The hosts pay tribute to his legendary roles before diving into politics, where Cory Booker's marathon filibuster gets mixed reactions: Mo is impressed, Chad shrugs it off like a casual jog, and Joel speculates he's gunning for the Democratic throne while Gavin Newsom plays nice with conservatives. Then, things get spicy with a corporate espionage scandal straight out of a bad spy movie. Former Rippling employee Keith O'Brien went full double agent for Deel CEO Alex Bouaziz, leaking company secrets in exchange for crypto payments. Rippling caught on, set a trap with a fake Slack channel, and watched O'Brien panic so hard he literally took an axe to his phone. The hosts mock Bouaziz' bumbling attempt at corporate espionage, calling him “Bozo” and predicting a not-so-relaxing vacation in prison. The economy isn't looking much better—278,711 layoffs in Q1, a 25 percent drop in European tourism, and Canadian border crossings plummeting by 45 percent. Chad calls it an economic disaster, Mo wonders if voters are feeling the regret yet, and Joel insists it's all part of a grand geopolitical chess match—though Chad thinks it's more like a checkers game gone wrong. In tech news, Elon Musk pulls a Musk move by having X AI buy X for $33 billion, a deal that smells like self-dealing to everyone but Musk. Meanwhile, TikTok is days away from a ban unless it finds a new sugar daddy, with Amazon and even someone connected to OnlyFans in the running. The hosts agree TikTok's algorithm is the real prize and speculate Trump might push the deadline—because what's social media drama without a little political plot twist? Shout-outs go to TalkPush for a prank, Corporate Bro for a spy drama skit (which, ironically, is more believable than Deel's real-life spy drama), and Wendy's for crushing it on Snapchat. Meanwhile, a listener flags CareerBuilder's traffic tanking faster than a bad startup pitch, proving the job market is as unpredictable as ever. Getting up to go to work every day is more challenging when you don't view your job as a career. According to CareerBuilder, nearly three in five (58 percent) Canadian workers feel they have "just a job" rather than a career (42 percent). While seven in ten (70 percent) Canadian employees believe their employer creates a safe and trusting environment that encourages honest communication, many still feel uncomfortable discussing work-related issues, according to a new survey by the Harris Poll on behalf of Express Services Inc.   The survey, which included responses from over 500 employees and more than 500 employers, found that the majority of workers find it easy to receive constructive feedback from managers (76 percent), set professional boundaries to prevent personal issues from affecting work (73 percent), and express concerns about their company (63 percent).   However, only 40 percent of employees said they feel comfortable discussing personal issues that impact their work with their managers. This figure increases among Generation Z employees (46 percent) but decreases among Generation X employees (37 percent).   Diane Taylor is the Founder and Principal Consultant of Glow Leadership. She is a speaker, author, leadership development coach, and strategic human resources consultant with over thirty years of professional experience across various industries. In this snark-filled episode, Chad & Cheese take a deep dive into one of the most talked-about events of 2024: the merger between two job board giants, Monster and CareerBuilder. Once the dominant forces in the recruitment industry, these two "dinosaurs" are now struggling to survive as they attempt to snuggle up and weather the changing landscape. Chad & Cheese break down how these industry titans fell from grace, touching on Monster's acquisition by Randstad and CareerBuilder's dismemberment by Apollo. With their trademark wit, they explore what went wrong—spoiler: Super Bowl commercials and bad leadership played a part—and predict how the merger will likely end. As they navigate the impact of the merger, Chad & Cheese explain why the job board industry is evolving into something more focused on niche markets and innovative performance models, while the "Titans of Old" are left rearranging deck chairs on the sinking ship. Filled with sharp insights and unfiltered commentary, this episode offers listeners a front-row seat to the job board "meteor crash" and what it means for the future of recruiting.  Get ready for some brutal honesty about where the industry is headed and why the old giants may not survive unless they evolve—fast.

Selena Rezvani, a renowned speaker on self-advocacy and leadership and the author of the Wall Street Journal best-selling book, "Quick Confidence: Be Authentic, Boost Connections, and Make Bold Bets on Yourself." She has been quoted, interviewed, and profiled by CareerBuilder, The Wall Street Journal, Oprah.com, The LA Times, Marie Claire, NBC television, and ABC television. Selena talks about how important it is to speak up for oneself at work. Selena also discusses effective strategies for leaders to encourage open communication and self-expression within their teams, emphasizing the significance of creating an inclusive work environment and shared insights on addressing situations where team members are interrupted or talked over. Selena stresses that instead of viewing power as bravado, we should reinterpret it as confidence grounded in a learning mindset.   Key Takeaways: [3:42] Selena discussed the value of speaking up at work, but she also mentioned that some leaders feel free to express their opinions in front of their subordinates. Selena additionally speaks about her two points of view when someone tries to voice a concern: first, have you earned the right to ask, and second, some people ask for what they want, and some people take what is given to them. [4:41] She shares the need to foster more cultures that are focused on self-advocacy, where managers and other leaders allow employees some leeway to make decisions and approach some of their work or work arrangements more like cafeteria style, where they can take what appeals to them and have more voice and choice over what they do. But if managers or leaders are not comfortable with those requests, Selena said it's impossible to work it out.  [13:27] Selena also concurs with one of Dr. Pfeffer's old sayings that "power is about 20% conferred and 80% taken," which means that power is typically more openly claimed than bestowed upon a single, exceptional person. She stated that it is something that should be remembered. Selena also shares how she frequently participates in some of her own advocacy work and encourages people to avoid waiting to be invited, instead, notice and claim it.  [18:03] She also shares the tactics for leaders to support others in speaking up for themselves and giving others a chance to be heard, and how to step in when someone is being talked over or interrupted. Selena also brings up the common topic that people discuss, which is being too critical of oneself. She also talks about how giving yourself grace is the cherry on top, and how it's crucial to acknowledge your feelings and give yourself a break in order to take care of yourself.  [21:30] Selena talks about how to be heard in meetings. She says you have to speak up more, but not so loudly that you have to scream for them to hear you. Another is rearranging your chair to draw people's attention and make a good impression. Another tactic is to unintentionally read your resume aloud; it's akin to telling them what you accomplished and what more you're capable of.  [25:50] She mentions the American culture of silence, which states that it takes four seconds for the person on the other side of you to become uneasy, insecure, or rejected. She stresses how crucial it is to understand that occasionally, silence can be used against us. Selena also talks about making a plan for how to voice your opinions in meetings so that you don't get silenced, for this will help you become more confident and share your knowledge.  [34:15] Selena also shares finding one's life's center of balance and control, as well as the value of trying new things and thinking outside the box. She says that positive things come from letting go. Furthermore, ruminating is a bad habit to get into before bed. Perhaps it's even letting go in that sense where someone is going to let go of that problem or thought. Good things come from letting go a little and letting serendipity and other people's decisions occasionally. Because control is a funny thing and our starting points can differ greatly. [40:22] Closing Quote: Remember, the most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence. - Blake Lively Quotable Quotes: “The more senior you are, the more likely you are to interrupt. “I may not be the best at this, but I'm not the worst at it, either. It's not that I'm never going to get it. It's that I haven't cracked it yet.” “So much power, the ability to use our voice, is up for grabs. Notice it, claim it, don't wait to be invited.” “Leaders can stoke confidence in others by ensuring their voices are heard and respected.” “Techniques include putting the spotlight back on someone who was interrupted, asking for their thoughts, and making small gestures of support.” “Use humor, lightening up, and using positive self-talk as ways to improve confidence.” “Respect one's resume by relating experiences to current projects or challenges.” “I think the other thing is we need to create more self advocacy oriented cultures where managers and leaders are given some latitude for people to have choices and approach some of their work or their work arrangements a little bit more like cafeteria style, where they can take what's appealing to them, where they have more say in voice and choice in what they do.” “Before going into a room, create a plan” “Confidence is Power.” This is the book mentioned in our discussion with Selena Rezvani: Resources Mentioned: The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. Hope Gurion is a seasoned professional with a background in product management, business development, and coaching within the tech industry. As the founder of Fearless Product, she plays a pivotal role in advising and supporting product leaders and teams. Hope's career traces back to the early stages of the internet, where she contributed to shaping digital experiences. She held positions at AOL, Jobster, CareerBuilder, and Beachbody, and she brings a wealth of experience in dealing with various challenges in product development, business growth, and leadership. In this episode of the Unlearn Podcast, Hope joins Barry O'Reilly to discuss her career journey, emphasizing the importance of persistence, adaptability, and shared vision within product teams. The Reach of Shared VisionHope reflects on her experience at AOL, particularly in AOL Shopping. Despite creating a detailed Product Requirements Document (PRD), the disconnect between her vision and the final designs revealed the necessity for shared understanding among team members. This disconnect eventually led to a breakdown in trust. Hope emphasizes that everyone should comprehend the business context and constraints. “It was just a learning moment for me in terms of, do you really have [a] shared vision?” she tells Barry. “Does everybody on the team really understand the business context of what we're trying to do?” This situation was common in the early 2000s tech landscape, Barry says. “There's still plenty of companies living in that world of siloed teams, lack of cross-functional groups.”Jack of Many TradesHope shares a key moment from her professional evolution, recounting a significant turning point when Matt Ferguson, the CEO of CareerBuilder, offered her a position. Hope initially turned down the role due to personal reasons, but Matt persisted, expressing a genuine belief in her potential and leaving the door open for future collaboration. This persistence became a catalyst for Hope's subsequent transition to CareerBuilder. It demonstrates how a leader's perseverance can reshape an individual's career trajectory. Hope's career evolution also highlights her adaptability. She navigated various roles, from AOL to CareerBuilder. Her eagerness to find ways to grow the business and diversify revenue streams led to her role as Chief Product Officer. From Chief to CoachHope's transition from being a leader in various companies to becoming a coach and advisor wasn't a predetermined career move, she shares. Barry prompts Hope to reflect on this shift, asking about the triggers and the unlearning process required. Hope's career shift was triggered by certain constraints she experienced in her role as CPO. At CareerBuilder, she faced the challenge of training and developing individuals from diverse backgrounds into product-related roles due to certain constraints. This experience became foundational for her belief in the coachability and trainability of product leader roles. Her coaching venture was a result of requests for interim consulting, leading to her collaboration with Teresa Torres. Reflecting on her coaching transition, Hope shares, “Knowing what types of skills I think are coachable and trainable, and knowing that was something that I got a lot of satisfaction doing and had seen a lot of different scenarios [of], is what gave me confidence that I could do this to a certain segment of people."Looking AheadHope advises listeners to focus on fundamental questions such as understanding the customer, evaluating alternatives, and articulating the unique value proposition, emphasizing the importance of alignment and shared understanding within product teams to drive forward progression.ResourcesHope Gurion on LinkedIn | X(Twitter)Fearless Product

Lots to talk about. But the gold plated content doesn't stop there. We knew it was coming … the latest job numbers show the unemployment rate is increasing. As the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, the economy is slowing down and a weakening labor market has to follow. It's time to sharpen your job hunting skills.  Rob tells you how to do that.By some measurements, the job market is still strong, but the trend is definitely heading in the wrong direction. If you haven't been job hunting lately, you'll want to pay attention because some things have changed.Proverbs 27:12 warns, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” You definitely don't want that. There was a time when you just updated your resume, sent it out, and then waited for a phone call or email from a hiring manager. That could still happen, but I wouldn't count on it. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to improve your chances of landing a job.Let's start with some of the rules that HAVEN'T changed. The first is networking. I know a lot of folks hate the idea of networking, but it's really important. By some estimates, up to 85% of jobs are filled without being advertised, and networking has a lot to do with it. You need to make a plan to contact at least one person you know every day and let them know that you're looking for work and what kind of work you'd like. Keep a list of people you've talked to and notes about the conversation. To take the anxiety out of networking, always ask the other person if they're also looking. Offer to be on the lookout for opportunities for them, as well. If you make it as much about the other person, you won't feel like you're being a burden. You also need to improve your job skills, whether you're seeking new employment or not. It's easier than ever these days to find online classes for additional training. Concentrate on skills that transfer to other types of businesses or industries, things like customer service, HR, and bookkeeping. Then update your resume and LinkedIn profile to show those skills or certifications, and specify how they increased revenue or cut expenses in your current or previous jobs. We've talked before about how important it is to never badmouth a previous employer in an interview, or on social media, no matter how tempting or deserved. No good can come from it. We've also talked about not posting any kind of objectionable material on social media. The rule is, if you don't want your grandmother to see it, don't post it. A CareerBuilder survey revealed that more than half of employers found content on social media that caused them to eliminate an otherwise promising candidate. Here's what's changed. These days, you HAVE to use social media in a positive way. It's not just about avoiding bad content. You want to use those platforms to highlight your favorable attributes. That same CareerBuilder survey found that 70% of employers use social media to check up on candidates and almost half said that an applicant's social media content contributed to their decision to EXTEND a job offer. That's how important social media has become.Since COVID, many jobs are now being done remotely. That can be a real blessing, but it also presents new challenges. You may not even go into the company office for an interview. That means you have to be ready to make a good first impression IN A VIDEO INTERVIEW. Employers now know that they can save a lot of time and trouble by doing interviews on Zoom or some other video platform. If you've never used them before, set up a practice session with a friend or family member so get comfortable with the process. Position your computer so there's a professional looking background, or at least nothing that appears untidy. Adjust your camera so you're eye-to-eye with the interviewer. You also want to dress much like you would for an “in person” interview. Don't think that's only from the waist up. If you suddenly have to stand up for some reason, you don't want folks to see your “jammy” bottoms. Also, alert others in the house not to disturb you during the interview. Close the door to keep out noise from the rest of the house.Everything else is much like you'd prepare for an in-house interview. Have a copy of your resume and other related paperwork handy in case the interviewer refers to it. And finally, follow up the online interview with an email expressing thanks no later than the next day.So those are ways you can sharpen your job hunting skills and be ready for whatever the economy brings. We hope you'll take advantage of them.Next, Rob answers these questions at 800-525-7000 or via email at askrob@FaithFi.com:Should you tithe on a tax refund? Is there a company one could use to track problems that might pop up from identity theft? If you have a 401(k) at your employer you'd like to participate in but someone at your church said they don't like them, are there any things you should know about 401(k)s for which one should be concerned? If you work jobs that short-term in nature but they're automatically enrolled 401(k) is set to 5 year vesting, how should you handle this?If you're 63, have been  divorced for 9 years, you were married for 27 and you've heard that you can draw off your ex-husband's Social Security, is this so?  And if you do this before drawing on your own, does it affect that?Be sure to check out the rest of FaithFi.com to access our books and our many free helpful resources.
