Amber has worked on both IMAP and DART, and also has a keen interest in advanced solar sail design concepts.   Solar sails have long been theorized as being a viable means of spacecraft propulsion — eventually — and we do seem to be moving closer to their being a reality… In June 2019, the Planetary Society successfully launched their crowdfunded, proof-of-concept LightSail 2, and it is still going strong! In fact, you can check on its current status here: https://secure.planetary.org/site/SPa...    Meanwhile, in Rochester NY, Dr. Grover Swartzlander from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was developing a new approach to solar sail design - one that could potentially allow spacecraft to photograph the poles of the sun for the first time! In April 2019 RIT and Dr. Swartzlander were awarded a 2019 NIAC Phase 2 award to explore the feasibility of diffractive solar sails! (https://www.rit.edu/news/nasa-announc...)   As a mechanical engineering student at RIT, Amber worked closely with Dr. Swartzlander on the diffractive solar sail design, and their collaboration continues today.    Amber started her experience on low cost, high risk CubeSats space at RIT as a student and at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). This evolved into research on advanced technology concepts for spacecraft. In her own words, Ann Marie searches for "the weird." Young stars exhibit some pretty bizarre behaviors, all of which have astrophysical explanations. However, there may be even stranger things out there, ready to be discovered with space telescopes. Her upcoming project will be searching for "alien megastructures" using the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).   Ann Marie Cody is a Principal Investigator with the SETI Institute's Carl Sagan Center. She has also worked at NASA Ames since 2014, first as a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellow and subsequently as a research support scientist for the Kepler and K2 Missions.    Dr. Cody uses ground-based telescopes and space observatories to explore the diversity of variability behavior in young stars. She uses this variability to learn about the dynamics of gas and dust associated with newborn stars and their planet-forming disks. Her time domain research involves high-precision optical and infrared photometry, as well as spectroscopy. John earned his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. While at Carnegie Mellon, John led the build of Scarab, a NASA concept robot for lunar drilling, and the first robot to carry a prototype of NASA's RESOLVE payload. He also founded Carnegie Mellon's Advanced Composites Lab, a research, training, design, and manufacturing lab specializing in high performance, lightweight composites for robotics.   Astrobotic Technology, headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, was spun out of Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute in 2007. Astrobotics is a lunar logistics company that delivers payloads to the Moon by accommodating multiple customers on a single flight. It is a partner with NASA through a Space Act Agreement under the Lunar CATALYST program, and has 22 prior and ongoing NASA contracts. The company has 10 payload delivery deals in place for its first mission and dozens of customer negotiations for upcoming missions.   Additionally, Astrobotic is developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications. Additionally, she is investigating the nutrient constraints microbes would have on Mars as well as performing experiments in Mars analog environments.   As a pre-teen, Kathryn's family moved from California to St. Petersberg, Russia, and later to France. During this time Kathryn absorbed all of the history, culture, the local people, and everything else these locales could offer young adult. After spending four years in France, Kathryn decided to return to the States where she enrolled in a local community college and began her academic career. For her thesis, she mapped the Earth’s transit spectrum using data from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE). Using the Earth's spectrum as a "fingerprint" of sorts, Evelyn theorized that transit spectra of Earth-like exoplanets orbiting smaller stars could then be modeled as they would be observed by the James Webb Space Telescope.
