Enroll and Retain International Students: Lessons from I-House at UC Berkeley

Fostering Global Understanding: The Role of International Houses in Higher Education The rising trend in international student enrollment, currently at its fastest rate in over 40 years, underscores the critical need for fostering global understanding in higher education. International Houses (I-Houses) have emerged as a powerful model for creating inclusive and globally-minded campus communities, addressing the challenges of integrating international students and enriching the educational experience for all. Dr. Shaun Carver, Executive Director of UC Berkeley's International House, joined to discuss the transformative impact of the I-House model on cross-cultural exchange and global education. With over a century of history, I-Houses continue to play a crucial role in breaking down cultural barriers and fostering understanding through daily interactions and shared experiences. Key Points Overview: The Origins and Evolution of International Houses: The I-House movement began in 1908, sparked by a chance encounter at Columbia University. John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the Cleveland Dodge family funded the first I-House, leading to establishments at UC Berkeley and the University of Chicago. The I-House Experience: UC Berkeley's I-House hosts approximately 620 residents from 80 different countries. A balanced mix of international and domestic students (20%) ensures cross-cultural exposure. Addressing Challenges of International Student Integration: Pre-enrollment support is crucial for international students preparing for U.S. education. Cultural and academic adaptation challenges are comparable to those faced by first-generation and low SES students. Financial considerations include higher tuition rates for international students. Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Environment: Balanced admissions ensure no single nationality or academic discipline dominates. Economic diversity is maintained through financial aid. Intentional room assignments pair students from different countries. Long-Term Impact of the I-House Experience: Alumni report lifelong friendships and transformative experiences. Notable alumni include Nobel Prize winners, heads of state, and business leaders. The Unique Identity of I-House Residents: Residents develop multiple affiliations: with the university, their specific schools, and I-House itself. The I-House affiliation often becomes the strongest over time. Future of International Houses and Global Education: Potential for I-Houses to play an expanded role in fostering dialogue on controversial topics. Aspirations to scale up the I-House impact globally. Three Key Takeaways for Higher Education Presidents and Boards: Lead with clear values and cultural principles, articulating them to all stakeholders. Maintain consistent policies across all groups to build credibility and trust. Protect freedom of expression by distinguishing between education and indoctrination. Final Thoughts The International House model offers valuable lessons for higher education institutions seeking to create truly global learning environments. By intentionally fostering cross-cultural interactions and maintaining a commitment to open dialogue, universities can prepare students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. The principles embodied by International Houses provide a roadmap for creating inclusive, intellectually stimulating environments that benefit both international and domestic students, ultimately contributing to a more connected and empathetic global society. If the idea of even talking to someone now gives you pause, then this is the episode for you.  The connection quality of part of our conversation is a little iffy in places, but it's worth listening to every moment of this episode.  Our guest today (a repeat guest at that!) talks us through the journey of compassionate dialogue, including practical tips on how to practice this in your next conversation, and how to do the inner work necessary to make this the default, rather than the exception, to your conversations in 2024 and beyond.   What to listen for: The compassionate dialogue structure includes the need to recognize, interrupt, and repair – and sometimes, we're finding that recognizing our own emotions is the most challenging part!  The good/bad binary, and how it's entirely unhelpful A powerful example of how to have difficult conversations around politics About Dr Dome:  Renowned speaker, author, and equity consultant Dr. Nancy Dome co-founded Epoch Education in 2014 to provide leaders in education and business with accessible professional development in diversity, inclusion and belonging, and equity. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ibrahim Al-Marashi, Associate Professor of History at the California State University San Marcos, to discuss his recent writing on the Wagner Group and Blackwater. Then, he is joined by Harold Meyerson, editor-at-large at The American Prospect, to discuss the recent decisions made at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). First, Sam runs through updates on the Department of Labor's overtime change, the delay of the Proud Boys' sentencing, the labor market, Hurricane Idalia, and other natural disaster and climate updates, before parsing through Biden's Medicare and student debt agenda. Ibrahim Al-Marashi then dives right into Blackwater's blueprint for the Wagner Group, and the role of South Africa's Executive Outcomes in setting the stage for them both, exploring how these three groups were the outcome of their nations capitalizing on the demobilization of state military by funding independent mercenary groups that largely work outside of any accountability apparatus, be it international of public. Expanding on this, Al-Marashi walks through the immense role Blackwater played in US involvement in Iraq, helping commit atrocities in the US' name without requiring a greater loss of US soldiers, before expanding on the Wagner Group's relationship to Russia beyond its role in Ukraine, with its operations largely located in Africa, where they've spent time warlording and extracting from local communities, all while Russia denied operations in the region. Wrapping up, Sam and Ibrahim walk through the conflict between state militaries and contracted forces, and explore the role that has, and will continue to play in Russia's floundering invasion of Ukraine. Harold Meyerson then joins, contextualizing the NLRB's recent Cemex ruling as one of the most empowering labor developments in a half-century of dwindling organizing, and why Jennifer Abruzzo's Board has chosen now as their moment to be active. Next, he and Sam parse through the actual details of the Cemex decision, why it's a great first step back towards the Joy-Silk doctrine of the NLRB, and how it aids in both forcing bargaining and punishing union busting. Wrapping up, Meyerson expands on the necessity of labor unions to capitalize on this moment, as they finally have both leverage and public opinion on their side, as well as touching on the role the Supreme Court and Senate have yet to play. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches the Right meltdown over Oliver Anthony not being a Republican, Nick from St. Louis calls in with a Prigozhin conspiracy, Okajic in NY relays Vivek's newest freestyle, and Tim Pool accidentally reveals a pattern about his programming. Graham from Maine expands on the evolution of Blackwater, and Mitch McConnell stares into the void, plus, your calls and IMs! Evans is the CEO of Project Tomorrow (www.tomorrow.org) and is the founder of the heralded Speak Up Research Project which annually collects and reports on the authentic views of 400,000 K-12 students, parents, and educators on key education issues each year. Dr. Evans serves as the chief researcher on the Speak Up Project as well as leading research efforts on the impact of innovative learning models and interventions in both K-12 and higher education. Over the past 17 years, almost 6 million K-12 students, teachers, and parents have participated in the Speak Up Project representing over 35,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and around the world. Dr. Evans is the longest-serving woman executive in the education technology nonprofit sector. As a thought leader and influencer, she brings to new discussions insights from her experiences within the technology industry, entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, and education research. Dr. Evans is a graduate of Brown University and earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California, San Diego, and California State University San Marcos. She serves on several boards and advisory and is a frequent speaker and writer on new learning models within education, most notably around digital learning. Each year, the Speak Up Project polls K-12 students, parents, and educators about the role of technology for learning in and out of school and the impact of new learning models on student outcomes and teacher effectiveness. The Speak Up dataset represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered stakeholder voices on digital learning. Since the fall of 2003, more than 6.2 million K-12 students, parents, teachers, librarians, principals, technology leaders, district administrators, communications officers, and members of the community have shared their views and ideas through Speak Up. In this age of globalization, the eighteenth-century priest and abolitionist Henri Grégoire have often been called a man ahead of his time. An icon of anti-racism, a hero to people from Ho Chi Minh to French Jews, Grégoire has been particularly celebrated since 1989, when the French government placed him in the Pantheon as a model of ideals of universalism and human rights.  In The Abbe Gregoire and the French Revolution: The Making of Modern Universalism (U California Press, 2021), we gain access for the first time to the full complexity of Grégoire's intellectual and political universe and the compelling nature of his persona. His life offers an extraordinary vantage from which to view significant issues in European and world history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It provides provocative insights into many of the twenty-first century's prevailing tensions, ideals, and paradoxes. Focusing on Grégoire's idea of "regeneration," that people could literally be made anew, Sepinwall argues that revolutionary universalism was more complicated than it appeared. Tracing the Revolution's long-term legacy, she suggests that while it spread concepts of equality and liberation throughout the world, its ideals also helped to justify colonialism and conquest. Mark introduces us to Donna Jackson, a returning member of Project 21 (see bio below) - she is back to talk about how Juneteenth Must Not Replace Independence Day. Donna gives us a history lesson on Juneteenth, the where's, the how's, and all the hub bub with Juneteenth. Chuck tells us a story about a show he was doing with some nut cases, during Christmas, and Chuck was told to celebrate Kwanzaa. Donna gives us a more info on her past and how she believes division is the only reason for all these forced religious segregations. Kamala Harris never ever ran as a black American when she was in California - she race hustled everyone when she decided to run for president. Donna wants to know the root cause of VP Harris's incompetence. Mark has heard that she is blatantly lazy and will not read the memos or the briefings. Thats what happens when you are in the state of California when you have no competitors, she didn't have to try very hard. Donna Jackson, a Project 21 member who serves as the program's director of membership development, is a seasoned accountant with public and private sector experience as well as previous forays into politics and ministry. Donna earned a Bachelor of Accountancy (cum laude) from the California State University San Marcos. She has worked in accounting, auditing and management roles with major companies such as Ernst & Young and Marriott International in the private sector before serving in the public sector as a deputy controller for the Export-Import Bank of the United States. She is a member of the National Association of Black Accountants. Prior to her career in accounting, Donna was a political operative in the state of Arkansas. She worked on the successful campaigns of Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Tim Hutchinson and Representative (now Governor) Asa Hutchinson. She was active in campaign recruiting and communications. She played a vital role during the Huckabee governorship in recruiting black candidates for executive-appointed boards and commissions in addition to helping create job-training programs at a local community college and the Arkansas Office of Workforce Development. She is a former board member of the Little Rock Minority Disability Advisory Network and a former member of the Crittenden County (Arkansas) Workforce Development Planning Committee. She was also a contributor to the Ernst & Young Diversity Think Tank. Donna originally sought a role in the church. She is a former divinity graduate of Charles H. Mason Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tennessee. It was there that she was taught the gift of administration as a vital part of the Christian ministry. Donna is a firm believer in free markets and entrepreneurship, rather than government, as a means of lifting people out of poverty. https://nationalcenter.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLf4wzJaPlbAPPE8K6OOlPS-ZlEARHlRDE&time_continue=2&v=DeAXbAq8Ki4&feature=emb_logo&ab_channel=NationalCenterforPublicPolicyResearch

The safest path can feel like the one without dialogue in conversations about equity and diversity. What if you offend the other person? What if they challenge your beliefs? What if you ruin a relationship?  When it comes to hard topics, effective communication skills are an asset, vulnerability is necessary, and forgiveness is vital. Our platform is called Dear White Women - and through it, we have this podcast, we have a book, we do talks - and a lot of our work, as biracial women, is to welcome more White women into the conversation.  As part of that work, we run into people saying that they're tired of talking about race, worry about saying or doing the wrong thing, and are very concerned about cancel culture, which is why this next conversation is an incredibly important one for all of us to listen to.     Dr. Dome is the author of the book, Let's Talk About Race, and Other Hard things. And in it, she lays out a structure of Compassionate Dialogue, the idea to Recognize Interrupt Repair hurts and leans into the idea that every single one of us can use to talk more about not just race, but also all sorts of other hard things.  Given the divide we see in our country, the retrenching, the idea of staunch individualism trumping community, we need these tools.  Plus, in it, we learned how this structure is really a form of self-care, growth, and such a powerful way to approach so many things in our lives.  Listen in to learn more, as this conversation really builds on the one that we had with Andre Brown in last week's episode.   What to listen for:  The details of the Recognize-Interrupt-Repair protocol - and how the repair is so critical for us to maintain relationships and community, and yet is often the one most overlooked How this protocol is good for our self-care overall The four communication styles (functional, intuitive, personal, analytical) - which one are you!?- and how knowing this can play a role in how you communicate better About Dr. Dome: Renowned speaker, author, and equity consultant Dr. Nancy Dome co-founded Epoch Education in 2014 to provide leaders in education and business with accessible professional development in diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity. As an educator for nearly three decades, Dr. Dome taught in the juvenile court and community schools teaching our most vulnerable students, and has served as a Distinguished Teacher in Residence and faculty member at California State University-San Marcos. This week's guest is Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall, Professor of History at Cal State San Marcos where she teaches comparative history with courses focused around Haitian history, revolutionary Europe, women in Jewish history and travel and contact in the early modern world. Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall thought she'd go to law school initially but inspiring debates and discussions with friends in the dorms, including at Oxford University, started to change that. After undergrad, she applied to law school and PhD History programs and got into both! She even interned at the Supreme Court and worked as a legal secretary but the history program ultimately won out. Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall is trained as a historian of France. She became captivated with the 18th century ideals of equality and how they applied to the conflicting existence of slavery in the French colony of Haiti. This led to her own studies of Haiti and the lack of knowledge around Haiti has motivated her to teach about it too. It is clear that Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall loves her students and learning about their backgrounds. She seeks to build community in her classroom and students find themselves immersed in multi-sensory experiences that include the incorporation of food and dance breaks. It isn't surprising that she took home a student-nominated award, the Harry E. Brakebill Outstanding Professor Award which is a top honor at Cal State San Marcos. She has published three books books including her most recent, "Slave Revolt on Screen: The Haitian Revolution in Film and Video Games”. It is one of the first books about video games written by a historian. In her spare time, and outside of pandemic times, Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall is also active with the San Diego Jewish Film Festival volunteering her time as an academic, speaker and chaffeur. We also talk about her parents who are also academics. You'll have to listen to learn more! Official Bio: Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall is Professor of History at California State University – San Marcos and past winner of the university's Brakebill Distinguished Professor Award. She received her BA in History and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MA and PhD in History from Stanford University. Her research specialties include the French and Haitian Revolutions, modern Haitian history, Slavery and Film, French colonialism, French-Jewish history, history and video games, and the history of gender. Her most recent book, Slave Revolt on Screen: The Haitian Revolution in Film and Video Games, was published by the University Press of Mississippi in 2021. Her previous works include the biography The Abbé Grégoire and the Making of Modern Universalism (University of California Press, new in paperback, 2021), and Haitian History: New Perspectives (Routledge, 2012). Note from Rabiah (Host): I had an incredible time speaking with Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall. If you haven't listened already, you'll find her to be enthusiastic and open and quite frankly someone you could talk to all day. One thing that resonated with me is that as a student, she reached out to a respected professor for advice. That's what I did just over a year ago when I was working on my short-term path. That really resonated with me. People want to help. Reach out to them. Also, in talking about her students, I learned she has a true interest in people and their backgrounds. The fact that she teaches non-history majors history and takes the time to know them and care made me think of the pivotal time I had at UCSD when I took science classes for non-science majors and had some incredible professors who also cared (and some who did not). +++++ Find Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrSepinwall Book - Slave Revolt on Screen:
