Mayor of Sturgeon Bay David Ward proclaimed the second Saturday in June as Steel Bridge Day, an annual city-wide holiday from this year forward. Steel Bridge Songfest, an event launched in 2005 to help raise money to save the bridge, went on a pandemic-induced hiatus in 2020. This year, it returns to celebrate its 20th anniversary. One of the founding organizers and local music legend pat mAcdonald joins reporter Eleanor Corbin to discuss how the festival came to be and what people can expect from its return.

Andrea Wittgens came to New York in 2006 from Nova Scotia, by way of Calgary and Seattle. In Seattle she trained in classical piano and modern dance, and, wielding a music degree from Queens College, fronted and wrote songs for the pop band Sugartown. Since moving to New York, her Bob Power-produced EP Alibi, and its 12-song follow-up In The Skyline, have been warmly reviewed. A visit to the Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, introduced her to the power of collective songwriting and shaped her 2016 EPs Girl In A Box and Grace. Join Aaron Simms and Jonathan Bell as they chat with Andrea about her work and listen to her play four of her own compositions live. And be sure to check out Andrea's Patreon page!
Christie Weber and pat mAcdonald organized quite a show and once again Door Pod Show was there! Recorded June 14-16, 2007, this series of podcasts on the topic of the fabulous Steel Bridge Songfest are Door Pod Show’s most ambitious production yet. The 17 audio files were pared down from over 100 recordings done over a three day period. And yes, it took me a long time to complete, but I think the results are worth it. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Several files were recorded backstage and have lots of LOUD background noise. There was also lots of wind and some of the recordings reflect that, most notably the interview with Paulie Rocco. I think the interviews are worth the noise however and encourage you to give each one a listen. The podcasts include interviews with Jackson Browne, Jane Wiedlin, Jonathon Spottiswoode, James Hall, Chris Aaron, Ruby James, Tony Brown, Melanie Jane, Catacombs of Rome and many, many more artists. And don’t miss Margaret Welch of the National Trust for Historic Preservation who gives a shout out to Christie and pat for their hard work in preserving the Sturgeon Bay steel bridge. This year the […]
