Like many musicians, Kerry started singing and performing when he was a kid in church. At age 7 he was singing solos in front of the entire congregation. Then came piano lessons to learn to read and write music. He really loved to sing though, so he concentrated on his vocals. He performed all throughout his school years, all the way up through college at George Mason University. The West Coast was calling him so in 1988 on a wing and a prayer he heads out to L.A.!! He settles in and meets some great musicians and starts to perform out there, singing in some experimental Rock bands like Acid Clown. In 1991 he came up with the concept of The Thrillbillyz and, along with the help of some great musician friends, was able to record a four song demo at Fox Studios in Glendale, CA and work with the owner/engineer Rich Fox. In 1993 ,after several years of performing around Southern California as The Thrillbillyz, Hurley moves back to the East Coast and his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke definitely is not as big of a market as L.A. but it has a growing music scene and Hurley jumps in head first. He re-forms The Thrillbillyz and starts playing shows like crazy. He continues to write and work on his originals and in 1994 takes his band into Flat Five Studios in Salem, VA and records the album “Romp!” and releases it in 1995. Ten of the eleven songs are originals and a few of the songs (Franklin County Moonshine & Sweet Leaf) wind up on the radio in regular rotation on the area's biggest Rock station 96.3 WROV. The band played constantly in support of it's record and through it's association with Buzz Casey and WROV was able to open up for quite a few National acts like Government Mule, Storyville, Foghat, Loverboy, Johnny Winter, Matchbox 20 and many more!!! The band played and enjoyed success for the next 5 years and in 2000 everyone went their own musical ways. Hurley had been singing on the side for a Blues band called Blues Hangover from 96 to 98 and traveled quite a bit with them, winning several Blues Contests and traveling to Memphis, TN in 97 to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. It was a great learning experience. In 2001 Hurley wound up joining The Fat Daddy Band and that very same year went down and won the Charlotte Blues Society's contest and in 2002 went to Memphis again to represent them at the IBC and made it to the finals (one of ten bands out of 150). For the next 14 years he would front that band and continue to write songs. He put out 2 cd's with The Fat Daddy Band - “From The Soul”(2003) and “Live & Lovin' It!”(2005).

It is a pleasure to welcome singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kyle Daniel to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Kyle Daniel's music is a unique blend of classic Southern rock and modern country, a fusion that appeals to a wide range of music lovers. His blue-collar sound resonates in rock clubs, honky-tonks, and everywhere in between. At the heart of this distinctive sound is a guitar hero, storyteller, and songwriter who has earned his audience the old-school way: by touring relentlessly, from dive bars in Tennessee to the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, and hitting key UK festivals along the way. Kyle, a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, began his musical journey at a young age, playing in bars before he could legally drink. His passion for music was undeniable, as he followed in his parents' footsteps to become a skilled guitarist. His early success, winning the Kentucky Blues Challenge at 17 and placing in the finals at the International Blues Challenge at 18, was just the beginning of his inspiring journey. Later, Kyle began writing songs that showcased not only his fiery fretwork but also his songwriting chops and vocals. His debut EP, Kyle Daniel, was recorded in a single day and released independently in 2018.Even without a label's help, the self-titled record found critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone praising it for mixing "the gravely twang of Steve Earle with Chris Stapleton's range, plus bigger hooks." After spending several years as a sideman for other artists, Daniel finally claimed his share of the spotlight, brewing up his melting pot of hard-hitting American roots music. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kyle Daniel spoke about his lessons from Anderson East, Bob Seger, and Brandy Clark and his debut album, Kentucky Gold.Let's connect on social media! With a guitar howling like it was recorded in a runaway cement mixer while keeping up with the frantic beat of an old suitcase drum and a rusty tambourine, Zeno Jones takes the old delta blues and lights them on fire with Kentucky moonshine. Based out of Louisville, Kentucky, Jones belts out raw vocals with a level of energy which can only be explained as a genuine attempt to give himself religion. Audiences are struck by the ferocity, originality and fresh take on the prewar blues, roots and gospel material Zeno takes inspiration and pays homage to. He is a two-time Semifinalist of the International Blues Challenge, a weeklong event featuring 200 regionally qualified blues acts from around the world. Since 2022 he has played for audiences around Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee from venues as intimate as a private house party to crowds at the Brown County Playhouse (IN), or from the standing room only bars of Beale Street (TN) to the overflowing street crowds the Garvin Gate Blues Festival (KY). Jones' fervor will have you either stomping your foot through the floor or calling the police. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

There are a ton of great original Christmas and Holiday Songs that have not hit the mainstream 'Yet'! (Like My Mrs.Claus Song LOL!) One of those songs is written by Toby Soriero and it's called "Sleigh Bell Blues". It's Rosedale Junction's Delta blues inspired acoustic number of one man's dark sad rambling ode of what Christmas now represents. We need to remember that the holidays with all the focus on merriment, is not all that merry for many. Toby's lyrics in "Sleigh Bell, Blues' speak to one mans' sad lonely emotions about how long it's been since he's heard sleigh bells ring. Poor guy sings that Santa doesnt come around where he is but he wishes he would. Seems Christmas in his town is all about “partying in the barn”, then going home and passing out. Still he's hopeful things might change for him. Written by Toby Soriero (Guitar, resonator, bass, drums, washboard and sleigh bells), Sleigh Bell Blues features vocals by Dgiovahni Denizevahni (Solo artist), piano by Roger Smith (Tower of Power) and harmonica by Trent Williamson (Solo artist). Toby Soriero began playing guitar at the age of nine, having studied under Connecticut-based jazz guitarist, Ron Stebbins. He's had a love for the blues and a passion for simple soulful music ever since. Toby grew up in the golden era of album rock, enamored with a generation of awesome guitar players. The most influential on his playing were Eric Clapton and the Three Kings (B.B., Albert and Freddie). In 2019, as a member of the acoustic blues duo, the Screwtop Sommeliers, Toby made it to the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2020 Toby said goodbye to Corporate America to focus on making music full time. We wish him well on his fun next act in life. I know a whole lot fo people who'd love to leave their jobs and just make music. I hope they get their chance. South Australian-born musician DAVID BLIGHT is without a doubt one of Australia's premier harmonica players. There aren't too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight. Every time you hear that favorite of Australia's rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David's distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes' vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years. During this interview, David shares his musical journey from listening to the radio and hearing "Bring it on Home" from a freshly released Led Zeppelin 2 when the light was well and truly switched on, to playing whenever he could with local bands, to how working at John Martins led David Blight to become Cold Chisel's harmonica player. David formed his own band The Flyers in 1982 and has continued his connection, recording with Cold Chisel and band members Don Walker and Ian Moss. Mick Kidd together with Dave Blight won the Adelaide Roots & Blues Associations inaugural "Memphis Blues Challenge" (solo/duo) in 2015 and were sent to represent Australia in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA – This was following up on their success at the 2014 South Australia Blues Awards winning the "Outstanding Solo/Duo." On 17th November 2015, a small group from the Adelaide Music Collective/ SA Music Hall Of Fame attended Cold Chisel's soundcheck to surprise Dave Blight with an induction. He had previously declined an induction as he felt he was not worthy. After many more nominations and public outpouring, it was decided that he would be inducted in collaboration with Cold Chisel. Music: intro "BAND IT ABOUT" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Cut you loose", written by Mick Kidd, is track 5 off of Mick Kidd and David Blight's sophomore album “Menu of Sin”, which was released on the 17th of July, 2017. Multi-instrumentalist Danny Filmer joins me to discuss his musical journey for this week's episode of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. Danny, born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), and raised in Blackwood, South Australia, was the youngest of three children. His older sister played the piano and whenever she wasn't at home, Danny would use that opportunity to hop on and play. Unfortunately, in the 70s when his sister decided to move out, she took her piano with her, but luckily for Danny, a family friend Steve Goss who was also a musician, gave him his first harmonica, and his love of this instrument and the blues grew from there. Danny, who also plays the bass guitar, joined his first band 'The Severed Tendons', who later changed their name to 'Endo Plasmic Reticulum' as their bass player, this was the beginning of his gigging career with various Adelaide bands. The 'Spirit Of Alondray' was the first band that Danny had the opportunity to play the harmonica with, but only on a few of their songs. In 2016 Danny began making and playing his cigar box guitars, initially using a stomp box for the beat. He soon realized that drumming was best left to the experts, so he asked his wife Sue to come out of performance retirement to provide the beat on the Cajon drum for him, they have been performing together as the duo SUEDAN ever since. Danny has been able to write songs complimentary to his choice of instruments, the cigar box guitar, and harmonica, whereas, in the past, the bands that he had played with didn't allow him to incorporate his favorite instrument the harmonica as much as he would have liked. The duo has a love of Middle Eastern music, which can be heard in some of their original blues compositions. The duo has traveled a lot since 2016, performing at various festivals and busking along the way. In 2021 Danny decided to leave his day job at the winery to enable them to turn Suedan into a full-time career, a risky move during a pandemic, but one that enabled them to take advantage of a time when mandatory density restrictions in venues, had resulted in a lot more work for solos and duos. When the duo isn't performing at events, they are running open mic's and busking. SUEDAN is competing in the Memphis Blues Challenge (MBC) Final on the 27th of August, for the opportunity to represent the Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) at the Blues Foundation's "International Blues Challenge", which will be held in Memphis Tennessee in 2023. Music: "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro: "Invisible Magic Guy", written in 2021 by Danny Filmer and performed by Suedan. This song was released in June 2021 on their album "Blues Box Set", which can be purchased online here: https://suedan.bandcamp.com/album/suedan-blues-box-set Links: all of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series links can be located here: https://linktr.ee/banditaboutpodcastseries Suedan Music website: https://suedan.com.au/ Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/Suedan-2140148932728428/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/suedanmusic/ Di Spillane Host/Creator/Editor. #musicinterviews #musicpodcast #musiccommentarypodcast #harmonica #banditaboutpodcastseries #suedan #dannyfilmer #adelaidesouthaustralia --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dianne-spillane/message

His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. A right-handed pitcher, Paige first played for the semi-professional Mobile Tigers from 1924 to 1926. He began his professional baseball career in 1926 with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts of the Negro Southern League and became one of the most famous and successful players from the Negro leagues. On town tours across the United States, Paige would sometimes have his infielders sit down behind him and then routinely strike out the side.[3] At age 42 in 1948, Paige made his debut for the Cleveland Indians; to this day, this makes him the oldest debutant in the National League or American League history. Virtuoso Slide Guitarist & Powerhouse, Ace Stringman Mark Newman on how to DeliverAs I navigate the musical waters of the Long Island Sound, more often than not I'm blessed to find some great music well up in my wheelhouse. And that's how I felt as I experienced Mark Newman's music Growing up in New York, Mark Newman's musical journey has taken him around the world several times as both sideman and singer/songwriter. This ace string man (guitar, lap steel, mandolin, dobro) and accomplished songwriter is the type of singer whose warm and expressive voice sounds like an old friend. He put it all together on 2006's “Must Be A Pony” In 2010 he took a quantum leap forward with the stunning “Walls Of Jericho” and has just released, “Brussels”, a live solo EP. “Empirical Truth”, his latest CD was released in June, 2018 (Danal Music, LLC, by WBA Records). Sharing the stage with such notables as soul legend Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), John Oates(Hall and Oates), Jim McCarty (Yardbirds, Renaissance),the late Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille), Bobby Whitlock (Derek and the Dominos) and Sam The Sham, has given Newman the perspective to craft an individualistic sound framed in straight-from-the-hip rock'n'roll, simmering with the subtle flavors of blues, R'n'B, funk, folk and soul.(New York, NY) — It was announced today that The Long Island Blues Society has named EMPIRICAL TRUTH by Mark Newman their 2019 CD Challenge winner. As the local winner, EMPIRICAL TRUTH will represent the Long Island Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Self-Produced CD Contest; which happens in Memphis from January 28th to February 1st, 2020. My guest today is award winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player, Ray Bonneville. When it comes to playing rack harmonica, Ray might just be as good as it gets. To accompany his truth telling lyrics, he's able to seamlessly pull off complicated finger picking patterns and play elaborate counter melodies on the harmonica between verses. Often called a “song and groove man,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec, he moved to Boston at age twelve, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot's license in Colorado before living in Alaska, Seattle, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region's culture and rhythms. And then, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard, Bonneville's lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. Ray recorded his first album, On the Main, in 1992. He's since released nine albums, earned wide critical and popular acclaim, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. In 2012, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance's 2009 Song of the Year Award, placed number one on Folk Radio's list of most-played songs of 2008, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label. Other notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, J.J. Cale, and Robert Cray, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world, including South by Southwest, Folk Alliance, and Montreal International Jazz Festival, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When not on the road, he resides in Austin, Texas. During our conversation, we chat about his early life and first musical groups, his time in the military, life as a pilot, and the finer points of songwriting.
