What does it take to tell one of the greatest sports stories ever put on film? And what does it take to prepare today's young athletes for success in a world where talent alone isn't enough? This week on Next on the Tee, I have two extraordinary guests who answer those questions from very different perspectives. First, legendary producer and former HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg returns to the show. Ross has won well over 100 major television awards and created some of the finest sports documentaries ever produced. We catch up on his upcoming documentary, The 99ers, celebrating the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team that captured the 1999 World Cup and changed women's sports forever. As a huge fan of the movie Miracle, I couldn't resist asking Ross to take us behind the scenes of bringing one of the greatest moments in sports history to life. We relive the unforgettable Miracle on Ice, celebrate Team USA's recent Olympic gold medal, and talk about why that incredible story still resonates decades later. Ross also shares updates on his outstanding USGA documentaries and, exclusively on Next on the Tee, announces his newest project—a golf book exploring the little "creative interpretations" many of us have with the Rules of Golf. If you've ever improved a lie, taken a generous drop, or found yourself reaching for an "executive mulligan," you'll definitely want to hear what's coming. Then I'm joined by 2-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Stephanie Grady, making her Next on the Tee debut. Stephanie's journey is remarkable. A nationally accomplished junior figure skater whose Olympic dreams were cut short by injury, she switched her focus to broadcast journalism at Penn State, became an award-winning television news anchor before making another bold career change. Today, she and her husband help high school and college athletes successfully navigate the rapidly changing NIL landscape through their company, Influential Athlete. Our conversation goes far beyond endorsement deals. Stephanie shares practical advice for athletes and parents about building confidence without creating entitlement, handling media interviews, developing a personal brand, making smart decisions off the field, and avoiding the pitfalls that can derail promising careers. We also discuss one of the biggest challenges facing young athletes today—how the choices they make after the game or after midnight can impact everything they've worked so hard to achieve. You know what I always say: nothing good ever happens after midnight... Whether you're a golfer, sports fan, parent, coach, or simply someone who enjoys hearing remarkable people share the lessons they've learned at the highest levels of competition and broadcasting, this episode is packed with stories, wisdom, and inspiration. So settle in, relax, and let us take your mind off everything else for the next hour. Thank you, as always, for pressing play. #NextOnTheTee #GolfPodcast #RossGreenburg #StephanieGrady #HBOSports #MiracleMovie #NIL #CollegeAthletics #SportsDocumentary #USGA #Olympics #YouthSports #GolfLife #SportsLeadership #Podcast

Olivia, Ryan, Bec & Justin continue their exploration of 1968's "Live A Little, Love A Little" discussing the final act or so of the film, including the musical sequences "A Little Less Conversation" and "Almost in Love," as well as digging more into the major differences between the novel it as based on, "Kiss My Firm But Pliant Lips." Where in the film we see Elvis' juggling two jobs as photographer, in the novel, the equivalent protagonist is trying to juggle two jobs and two women, and the gang weighs the climax of the novel where it all comes to a head with the adaptation's more simplified (and somewhat confusing) but perhaps more thematically interesting resolution.  Plus, they glean historical context such as what scene Elvis was filming when news broke that Dr. King had assassinated, and other insights on the making of the film from the highly recommended biography of Norman Taurog, "Elvis' Favorite Director" by "Live A Little, Love A Little" screenwriter Michael Hoey. Also discussed are more of "Kiss My Firm..." author Dan Greenburg's works, including two Elvis-themed children's books from decades later, one called "Elvis the Turnip and Me" and another "Attack of the Evil Elvises," as well as possible insights (and disappointing discoveries about Greenburg) on real-life inspirations for Bernice & Alice from his 1972 memoir, "Scoring." Be sure to also check out Ryan's new Substack over at https://substack.com/@mrdrostehistory If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. With the show coming back into dropping regular episodes this year, we're dropping a few flashback shows for everyone! Our commentary during this 2018 episode touched base on updates with the after effects of the earthquake + tsunami in Japan, the recent U.N. intervention in Libya news, the possible upcoming U.S. government shutdown due to budget issues and why it's just ridiculous how politicians are dragging this along, the re-birth of the "Birther" fake controversy with President Barack Obama and some other diverse topics here and there. We also had a great interview with Forbes magazine staff writer Zack O'Malley Greenburg about the creative inspiration, work & drama behind his latest book, "Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office".Book Summary:Empire State of Mind tells the story behind Jay-Z's rise to the top as told by the people who lived it with him–from classmates at Brooklyn's George Westinghouse High School; to the childhood friend who got him into the drug trade; to the DJ who convinced him to stop dealing and focus on music. This book explains just how Jay-Z propelled himself from the bleak streets of Brooklyn to the heights of the business world.Zack O'Malley Greenburg draws on his one-on-one interviews with hip-hop luminaries such as DJ Clark Kent, Questlove of The Roots, Damon Dash, Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite, MC Serch; NBA stars Jamal Crawford and Sebastian Telfair; and recording industry executives including Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, to paint a tantalizing portrait of a very private mogul._________FuseBox Radio Playlist for the Week of March 30, 2011Top Spins (Music Still Lasting in Rotation/Music Played Live on Air Each Week/As Well As Music Requested By The Listeners)1. Nineteen-year-old PFC LaVena Johnson was found dead on a military base in Iraq, with the Army ruling it a suicide. But the evidence—broken teeth, burns, a dislocated shoulder, and signs of sexual assault—tells a different story. Her father, a psychologist and military veteran, refused to accept the official explanation and uncovered disturbing details suggesting a cover-up. Was LaVena murdered? And if so, why has the truth been buried for nearly two decades? Let's explore this case, the fight for justice, and the questions that still demand answers.Connect with Paige:BlueSky: reverietruecrime.bsky.socialInstagram: instagram.com/reverietruecrimeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@paige.elmoreWritten by: Chelsea PerryIntro and Outro by: Jahred GomesResources:Department of Defense. At War with Women: Military Humanitarianism and Imperial Feminism in an Era of Permanent War (Cornell University Press, 2023) by Jennifer Greenburg reveals how post-9/11 politics of gender and development have transformed US military power. In the mid-2000s, the US military used development as a weapon as it revived counterinsurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan. The military assembled all-female teams to reach households and wage war through development projects in the battle for "hearts and minds." Despite women technically being banned from ground combat units, the all-female teams were drawn into combat nonetheless. Based on ethnographic fieldwork observing military trainings, this book challenges liberal feminist narratives that justified the Afghanistan War in the name of women's rights and celebrated women's integration into combat as a victory for gender equality. Dr. Jennifer Greenburg critically interrogates a new imperial feminism and its central role in securing US hegemony. Women's incorporation into combat through emotional labor has reinforced gender stereotypes, with counterinsurgency framing female soldiers as global ambassadors for women's rights. This book provides an analysis of US imperialism that keeps the present in tension with the past, clarifying where colonial ideologies of race, gender, and sexuality have resurfaced and how they are changing today. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In their own words, the mission of TPGA is to be a a one-stop source for carefully curated, evidence-based, neurodiversity-steeped information from autistic people, parents, and autism professionals. They emphasize that autism acceptance is not merely noble but necessary—and are separate matters from the autistic and other autism communities' never-ending fights for medical, legal, social, and educational accommodation. The goal of TPGA is “to help  fast-forward past society's rampant autism fabrications and negativity, by providing clear, thoughtfully presented, balanced, and referenced information”.  Barry and Dave discuss TPGA in the context of Shannon and Carol's experiences as parents, and as advocates for the autistic community.
