In this episode, I chat with Emiko Jean, the New York Times bestselling author whose journey from various professions to the realm of writing is nothing short of inspiring. Emiko sheds light on her latest page-turner, The Return of Ellie Black, and the meticulous care she gives to her Japanese American characters. The world of publishing is fraught with uncertainties, but Emiko's candidness about her path, which took her from feeling disconnected to books she saw in libraries and bookshops due to her heritage, to celebrating representation in her work. The thread of survival and resilience weaves through our discussion, as Emiko draws upon true crime inspirations to craft narratives that echo the human spirit's enduring nature. She opens up about her five-year commitment to storytelling, infusing her characters with psychological depth, and confronting the repercussions of trauma. The novel's gripping conclusion—a twist devised to keep readers guessing—is a testament to her ability to create suspense that lingers beyond the final page. Finally, Emiko reflects on the arduous road to publication—the rejections, the revision under the guidance of an editorial agent, and the triumph of securing a two-book deal. Her approach to reading, favoring nonfiction during the writing process, and the unexpected delight in branching into new literary territories, underscores the ever-evolving nature of a writer's craft. Reacher (Prime Video) Out of 5 Brutal Stealth Kills Darryl: 4.49/5 Brian: 4.88/5 Episode 6 Title: "New York's Finest" Directed by: Carol Banker Written by: Cait Duffy & Michael J. Gutierrez Aired: January 5, 2024 Summary Following the building explosion, Russo gives the team a lead regarding the location of Marlo Burns. After the team track her down, she confirms that Swan has been trying to stop New Age's terrorist operation. She also reveals that she has been on the run thanks to Langston, who warned her that she and her daughter would be killed if she associated herself with Swan. Russo learns that his boss was contacted by New Age and is involved with their plans, having been bribed into revealing information regarding Reacher and the team. When Russo and Burns' daughter Jane attempt to go into hiding, they are tracked by New Age hitmen attempting to kill them while pursuing them in a high speed chase across the city, forcing Russo to call the team for backup. The team enlists Burns as bait to lure Langston and other members of New Age into a trap, which results in Reacher killing all of them minus Langston, who escapes. Afterwards, Neagley, Dixon, and O'Donnell arrive to assist Russo. They rescue Jane, but Russo has died having sacrificed himself to kill the hitmen. #CertifiedInfamous TV Shows of 2023 Darryl Reacher Season 2 (Amazon) Picard Season 3 (Paramount) Ted Lasso Season 3 (AppleTV) One Piece Season 1 (Netflix) My Hero Academia Season 6, Part2 (Hulu) Honorable Mentions Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix) Beckham (Netflix) Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (AppleTV) Brian Succession (MAX) Reacher (Amazon) The Bear (FX/Hulu) Gen V (Amazon) Ted Lasso (AppleTV) Honorable Mentions Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (AppleTV) Based on a True Story (Peacock) Justified: City Primeval (FX/Hulu) Infamous Shirts for Naked Bodies... In this episode, Emiko Jaffe and I explore what weight-neutral fitness means and how people in all shapes and sizes of bodies can begin a positive relationship with movement. About Emiko Jaffe Emiko is a weight-neutral, size-inclusive fitness coach in San Diego, California who helps people perform the activities they care about most with more ease, efficiency and enjoyment without pursuing intentional weight loss.   Emiko pivoted to becoming a weight-neutral, size-inclusive fitness trainer when she realized the harm and futility in most attempts at sustainable, intentional weight loss. She finds that her focus on actual fitness (what our bodies can DO) and not on intentional weight loss or aesthetics makes it compatible with the goals of many people who are in recovery from an eating disorder or have otherwise received clearance from their eating disorder team who also want to pursue fitness goals (increasing strength, stamina, mobility, overall health and well being).   You can contact and follow Emiko through the following links: Instagram @phasesfitness Website https://www.phases-fitness.com/   Interested in hanging out more in Dr. Marianne-Land? It's the Japanese word for rice, but it also means ‘family meal' and for Emiko, the only word as the title for her latest book. This week's conversation is a journey, a little metaphysical, a little brass tacks life advice, no doubt this week's guest will send you! A resident of Long Beach California since 1999, Tracy Emiko Ugai created a mosaic by picking up pieces that work and discarding what doesn't to build the colorful life she has today. Best known for her roller skating and wellness brand Basics of Happy, her impact as a visible Long Beach skate community member, and storied career in action sports marketing and PR (for iconically California brands such as Vans, Quicksilver, and Moxi )  precede her. Tracy regales us with tales of her roller skating roots, which started with Long Beach DIY parking lot roller derby in all of its scrappy down and dirty charm. She also takes us back to park skating before its boom and the exciting collaborative phase of discovery the community was in before the days widely available tutorials and park hardware. The draw Tracy feels towards wellness is in no way out of left field, in part born of the dissonance she felt between the marketing (and social media) presence she crafted and real life, she found herself hungry for a more grounded perspective. She was evolving and wanting out of the corporate gig life, and wanted to leave space for healing herself, and on the way she found herself positioned to pivot towards a path working wellness. In the process she found herself back in roller skating community and exploring the intersections between movement and healing. Tracy generously shares the lessons that very much influence her business and her brand today. Applying her life experience, she tackles issues like facing burnout, overcoming self-doubt, redirecting hyper focus as a neurodivergent business owner, and meditative power of roller skating! Above all else she highlights how relinquishing control in creating her own business allowed the road to unwind before her in unexpected and miraculous ways. Not to mention,  we get granular about her foray into developing roller skates for the first time for her very own company, and how collaboration in community are very much the engine behind Basics of Happy. Get ready to nerd out!Suffice to say, this interview is a veritable treasure trove featuring slices of roller skate history, personal wisdom, healing, and being in business in roller skating today. Emiko Jean is a Japanese-American author-- but, before she was an author, she was an entomologist (bug catcher), candle maker, florist, and teacher. She strongly believes in “faking it till you make it” and asking for forgiveness rather than permission. Emiko has written many YA novels, like, Tokyo Ever After, which was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club YA Pick. But her most recent novel, Mika in Real Life, is a bit more grown-up. With themes about sexual assault, motherhood, adoption, and coming of age when you're already an adult. The protagonist, Mika, has disappointed her mother too many times to count, has given up her passions, can't keep a job, and her love life is– well, nonexistent. The novel begins at the peak of all this messiness when Mika gets a call… and it's the daughter she put up for adoption 16 years ago. We speak with Emiko Jean about her new novel, motherhood, and how her book explores and deconstructs the 'model minority myth.'
