What if we told you that military-grade products, diamond engagement rings, and even your precious 10,000 daily steps might all be marketing stunts? Yeah... we're upset too.On Episode 126 of The Rizzuto Show, the gang accidentally stumbles into one of the internet's most infuriating rabbit holes: marketing myths that somehow became accepted facts. It starts innocently enough when Rizz spots a "military grade" phone case and asks a simple question: what does that actually mean? The answer sends everyone spiraling into a conversation about how companies have been selling us stories, slogans, and straight-up nonsense for decades.Turns out the legendary two-minute Guinness pour may have been more about branding than beer. Breakfast being "the most important meal of the day?" Thank the cereal companies. That giant toothpaste blob in every commercial? Apparently your toothbrush isn't supposed to look like it's frosting a cake. And if you've ever felt pressured to spend months of your salary on a diamond engagement ring, congratulations—you've been personally touched by one of the greatest marketing campaigns ever created. The crew also dives into the weird history behind Philadelphia Cream Cheese, why fondue became Switzerland's "national dish," the surprising origin of the carbon footprint concept, and how a Japanese pedometer company convinced the world that 10,000 steps is the magic number. Nothing is sacred. Nothing is real. Everyone is being marketed to.Meanwhile, Rafe continues his heartbreaking battle against cheese after discovering food sensitivities, leading to an emotional support segment featuring Babybel references, nutritional yeast slander, and enough dairy-related grief to qualify as a documentary. Then it's time for one of the most chaotic rounds of King Scott's Match-Up Game in recent memory. The crew struggles through questions involving Greek letters, historical documents, WNBA champions, Yo-Yo Ma, panda group names, and the meaning of 5G. The results are... not exactly a celebration of American education. Let's just say there were some lucky guesses, some painful misses, and at least one victory that felt completely undeserved. This episode delivers everything you want from a daily comedy show: weird facts, hilarious debates, accidental learning, self-inflicted humiliation, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. If you love a daily comedy podcast that can go from exposing corporate marketing schemes to arguing about panda terminology in record time, you're in the right place.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 51: MMIW: Healing Through  In Wabanaki territory and across Turtle Island, our women, girls and two-spirit relatives are the heart of our nations. They carry our stories, our languages, and our future. Yet, the painful reality of the MMIW crisis continues to affect our families and communities deeply. This week, we welcome back a very familiar voice and longtime advocate to the studio, our former Aunties co-host, Lauren Stevens. Together, the Aunties sit down with Lauren for a deeply necessary conversation about grief, resilience, and reclaiming our narrative. We dive into the profound medicine of speaking our stolen relations' names out loud, ensuring they are never made invisible by the systems around us. Lauren shares how utilizing the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) network provides critical, proactive support to keep our people whole and protect our collective spirit before crisis even begins. This is an episode about taking up space, raising our voices, and anchoring ourselves in cultural traditions. True healing happens when we center our Wabanaki values, look out for one another, and refuse to be silenced.  Wabanaki Words Used: Apc-oc (again in the future, parting, good-bye, farewell) - https://pmportal.org/dictionary/apc-oc   Topics Discussed:   MMIW - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_and_Murdered_Indigenous_Women Salt Bay Chamberfest - https://saltbaychamberfest.org/ Dawn Avery - https://www.dawnavery.com/ Wilhelmina Smith - https://www.wilhelminasmith.com/ We Are Water - https://portlandovations.org/event/we-are-water-a-northeast-celebration/ Yo-Yo Ma - https://www.yo-yoma.com/ Rodger Paul - https://umaine.edu/nativeamericanprograms/people/rogerpaul/ Chris Newell - https://www.nefa.org/chris-newell Mali Obomsawin - https://www.maliobomsawin.com/ Jeremy Dutcher - https://jeremydutcher.com/ Andri Magnason - https://andrimagnason.com/ MMIW Poem by Feather Mason-Delorme - https://poetryinvoice.ca/write/monthly-poem-prize/winning-poems/mmiw-poem UNITY - https://unityinc.org/   Wabanaki Tribal Nations: Houlton Band of Maliseet Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians | Littleton, ME (maliseets.net) Mi'kmaq Mi'kmaq Nation | Presque Isle, ME (micmac-nsn.gov) Passamaquoddy Tribe Indian Township Passamaquoddy Tribe @ Indian Township | Peskotomuhkati Motahkomikuk Passamaquoddy Tribe Sipayik Sipayik Tribal Government – Sipayik (wabanaki.com) Penobscot Nation Penobscot Nation | Departments & Info | Indian Island, Maine   Special Thanks/Woliwon:  Producer: Gavin Allen Podcast Team: Macy Downs

On this episode of the Casual Cattle Conversations Podcast, Shaye interviews first-generation Texas rancher Kim Jungkind about staying curious to reduce cattle stress and improve performance. Kim shares how observing cattle led her to test music and color preferences: her herd moved away from rock music but gathered closely to Bach, especially Yo-Yo Ma's cello, which she now plays during feeding and stressful events like trailering or difficult births to calm the herd; she connects stress reduction to better weight gain by preventing metabolic energy loss.   She also found cattle are drawn to yellow after placing art in a corral, and notes cattle see yellow best and blue well, inspiring practical changes like using yellow flags on sorting sticks. Kim recounts transitioning from nursing and academia to ranching after inheriting her father-in-law's operation, receiving community support through a local church, and facing a major fire early on. Creativity through the lens of a musician and songwriter"Being creative is so lucky"Robin Batteau's“Banned in Sparta” is a new collaborative album of songs based on poems by Classical Greek poets and recorded by a number of friends: Tom Paxton, Eric Andersen, Livingston and Kate Taylor, Matt Nakoa, Robin Lane, 2-time Tony winning actor James Naughton and his gifted children Keira and Greg, plus Carolyn Hester.  Robin was inspired by an Ancient Greek History class he took when he returned to Harvard during the Pandemic to finish a degree he started in the 1960s. Robin earned the World Record of taking a 50-year break (between 1970 to 2021) to return to Harvard and finish his degree in 2022.   “Banned In Sparta” focuses almost entirely on poets from Ancient Greece between 700 and 400 BC.  One poet, Gaius Valerius Catullus (84 – 54 BC), as smitten with the ghost of Sappho as Robin or Alcaeus, is from Rome during Julius Caesar's reign, for whom Eric Andersen performs “Cross (of Gold),” an ode to interlaced and conflicted feelings, “Odi et Amo"— I hate and I love. The title “Banned in Sparta” finds its name from Archilochus, the Bob Dylan of the 7th century B.C., a warrior-poet so irreverent he was “Banned in Sparta.”  James Naughton sings the song “Archilochus Re-Deemed (I Am a Servant of the Lord God of War).” Kate Taylor performs “Telesilla's On the Wall,” from the female poet Telesilla, who led her fellow women warriors to victory against those same renowned Spartans. “The Greek Lyric poets performed live, and were the stars of their day,” says Robin. “They were singer/songwriters, they played the lyre (hence "Lyric") and danced around the stage like Tom Paxton and Taylor Swift.”Robin, who studied Ancient Greece and Integrative Biology at Harvard, found that most of what was left of the poems were fragments and myth, “So I mosaic-ed songs to reflect their expressions and intentions— who they were, and are to me.”  A range of female poets contributed to the lyrical history of Greece including Corrina, whose “In Her Loving Arms” is sung by Carolyn Hester, and Praxilla's “The Most Beautiful Thing in the World,” a hymn to Adonis, sung by Keira Naughton.  Sappho's writing inspires “Terra Cotta Heart,” sung by Robin Lane.  Livingston Taylor sings “My Sappho, Sweetly Smiling” from the smitten neighbor and rival Alcaeus. The fun and frolicking “Shake your Hair (You Thracian Filly),” sung by Tom Paxton. Pianist and folk singer Matt Nakoa offers a Bruce Hornsby-like treatment for Simonides of Ceos's “Theatre of Memory (Man of Gold).”    Sharing Grammy, Emmy, Clio, and Gold Record Awards and an Oscar nomination, Robin's recorded over a dozen albums with Pierce Arrow, David Buskin (Buskin & Batteau), and many others.  His jingles feature in long-running, award-sweeping advertising campaigns from "I'm Lovin' It" for McDonalds to “Can't Beat It” for Coca-Cola to "The Heartbeat of America" for Chevrolet. He's played his 1898 Scarampella violin with everyone from Yo-Yo Ma to Benny Goodman to Bruce Springsteen and has had his melodies sung by Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, Paul Newman, and more. His songs have supported charities and causes, including World Hunger Year, Ocean Alliance, Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign, and Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for kids. The Boston Globe defines his music with David Buskin as "Acoustic Heaven."https://robinbatteau.com/https://www.facebook.com/robin.batteauSend us Fan Mail

Covid hit everybody, either personally or as members of society, and our mental health was damaged. It was trauma and it largely hasn't been processed. When Joshua Roman became the principal cellist at the prestigious Seattle Symphony at age 22, it wasn't really a surprise. As he explains, he had been training since the age of 3, desperate to get better, intent on overtaking Yo-Yo Ma and Pablo Casals. He didn't just run for fun, he targeted a sub-six minute mile. After Seattle, Joshua was a world traveling soloist with no fixed address and yet more striving. Then the pandemic hit and his covid became long covid, taking his energy and, often, his ability to even read a sentence much less sheet music. Joshua tells us about the life change that occurred as a result, his careful parceling out of his remaining energy, and the more focused and content he lives after the brick wall collision. Over the centuries, they have become the "holy grail" for every serious cellist, and have migrated from the practice room to the concert stage, films, and beyond. Cellists including Yo-Yo Ma and Janos Starker have revisited Bach's Cellos Suites multiple times. Professor Klorman chatted with Suzanne about what makes Bach's music so great.

Most people hide their addiction until it destroys them — Kellan Fluckiger spent $3,000 a week on cocaine while testifying before Congress, then flatlined in an ICU and met God at the door. In this episode of The Root of All Success, Jason Duncan sits down with Kellan Fluckiger, a former energy executive turned coach, author of 30+ books, billboard-charting choir performer, and founder of The Ultimate Life Formula. After hiding cocaine addiction and depression for 30 years while working at the highest levels of government and industry, Kellan experienced a divine intervention in 2007, quit cold turkey, and walked away from millions in contracts. In 2018, he died in the ICU for 17 days — and what happened at that doorway changed everything. Kellan shares how severe childhood abuse created the “I'm not good enough” belief that fueled decades of overachievement and self-destruction, his 18-hour out-of-body life review of pain he caused and received, and the four truths God gave him about purpose and mission. This conversation dives into: • How childhood abuse created a lifelong “prove I'm good enough” addiction • Spending $3,000/week on cocaine while running energy operations and testifying before Congress • The 2007 divine intervention and 18-hour life review • Quitting cocaine cold turkey after hearing “it is enough” • Meeting his wife Joy at a Yo-Yo Ma concert when God said, “You need to marry this woman. Tonight.” • Walking away from millions in contracts without knowing what came next • The 2018 near-death experience: flatlining in the ICU for 17 days • Standing at the doorway with God and being asked, “Do you want to come home?” • A vision of infinite domains (like the movie Contact with Jodie Foster) • Four truths brought back from death: You're divine. You have a mission. You have gifts. Help is available. • Why God said “Because you don't believe,” when asked why people settle • The Book of Context framework for eliminating limiting beliefs • God's final question before returning: “Are you sure?” • How “context straitjackets” (BDEEP: Beliefs, Definitions, Experiences, Expectations, Perceptions) limit us • Why success isn't what you accumulate — it's what you make of yourself • His refusal to give up: “I friggin won't stop.” If you're battling hidden addiction, stuck in “not good enough” patterns, or wondering if transformation is possible after decades of pain — this episode will challenge everything you thought you knew about redemption and purpose.

The highly renowned classical clarinetist, David Singer, has performed many times at Carnegie Hall. He was a principal member and soloist with the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for 36 years and is featured on many of the group's 70 CDs on Deutsche Grammophon. David began with Orpheus when the group was playing for free. He has played with many of the world's greatest classical musicians, including legends like Yehudi Menuhin, Itzhak Perlman, Rudolf Serkin, and Yo-Yo Ma among others.David has also performed at the White House with Music from Marlboro and The Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society for Presidents Carter and Clinton.  David's recently published memoir, From Cab Driver to Carnegie Hall, is more than a musician's autobiography; its inspiring narrative will resonate with anyone who has faced life's challenges head-on. It's an ode to the power of never giving up while giving oneself every chance to succeed. I've read David's book and found it to be a fascinating, uplifting reflection of a life in music that's been full of challenges, triumphs, and the transformative power of music. If you enjoy stories about artists succeeding despite difficult obstacles, I highly urge you to read David's entertaining memoir.

Phil Haynes: Banging the Drum for Liberty Now

Today we're putting The Tonearm's needle on drummer Phil Haynes.Since moving to New York from Oregon in 1983, Phil's played on scores of recordings with artists like Anthony Braxton and David Liebman. Phil has joined me once already, in March 2024, to discuss his memoir, Chasing the Masters: First Takes of a Modernist Drumming Artist.Phil's with me today to discuss his band Free Country, which takes American roots music and runs it through their particular jazz lens, using cello, guitar, bass, and drums to create something called "jazz-grass."Their new album Liberty Now! did not set out to be political. Phil planned for the group to record original compositions, a departure from their previous work. But then the last US Presidential election happened. And then the band got word of the passing of their trumpeter, Herb Robertson, as they walked into the studio. The music and the plan changed. Phil paired the new recordings with songs from Free Country's catalog into a double album that runs from Revolutionary War tunes to "What a Wonderful World."Phil's here to talk about grief, protest, making art when the ground shifts under you, and one of my favorite topics: the role of music in addressing contemporary political and social challenges.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Phil Haynes & Free Country's album Liberty Now! )–Dig Deeper• Artist and Album:Visit Phil Haynes at philhaynes.com and on BandcampPurchase Phil Haynes & Free Country's Liberty Now! from Corner Store Jazz or BandcampPhil Haynes' memoir: Chasing the Masters: First Takes of a Modern Drumming ArtistPhil Haynes' March 2024 appearance on The Tonearm Podcast• Free Country Band Members:Hank Roberts, cellist/vocalistDrew Gress, bassistJim Yanda, guitarist• Free Country Discography:Shenandoah (1997) - pre-1900 American musicWay the West Was Won (2002) - early 20th century Americana'60/'69: My Favorite Things (2014) - music of the 1960sSomething Beatles (2013) - live Beatles covers• Herb Robertson:Herb Robertson tributePhil Haynes & Herb Robertson: Ritual (2000)herbrobertson.com• Influences and Mentors:Paul Smoker, trumpeterDavid Liebman, saxophonistElvin Jones - Merry-Go-Round album• Historical and Musical References:Max Roach - We Insist! Today on the show, we're bringing you an episode from Our Common Nature (https://link.podtrac.com/v7mx144d), a new podcast series where cellist Yo-Yo Ma and host Ana González travel around the United States to meet people, make music and better understand how culture binds us to nature. The series features a few familiar voices, including Ana González (host) and Alan Goffinski (producer), from our kids podcast, Terrestrials (https://link.podtrac.com/vysacqn1). About the episode: West Virginia is defined by its beauty and its coal, two things that can work against each other. Yo-Yo Ma felt this as soon as stepped foot in its hills. This episode explores how music and poetry help process the emotions of a community besieged with disaster and held together by pride and duty. We travel down the Coal River with third-generation coal miner Chris Saunders, who tells us how coal has saved and threatened his life. Poet Crystal Good shares her poetry, which channels her rage and love. And musician and granddaughter of West Virginia coal miners, Kathy Mattea, explains the beauty of belting out your home state in a chorus. The end of the episode finds host Ana floating down the New River with help from a group of high schoolers and Yo-Yo Ma. Listen to the full series Our Common Nature (https://link.podtrac.com/v7mx144d). Featuring music by Yo-Yo Ma, Dom Flemons, and Kathy Mattea and poetry by Crystal Good.EPISODE CREDITS: Radiolab Bits Produced - Anisa Vietze (Radiolab bits)Signup for our newsletter!!
