Although not usually thought of as a state steeped in UFO history, Wisconsin lays claim to some of the most influential and important names in the field, dating back to the beginnings of the study itself. From the founding of the oldest and largest civilian research organizations in the world, to 3 different towns claiming to be the "UFO Capitol of the World," to some of the strangest reported sightings in our nation's history, Wisconsin certainly has left, and continues to leave, an indelible mark in UFO lore. Scott and Mickey discuss Wisconsin's place in UFOlogy, and review some of the claims that have baffled experts for decades... Hear it all on our 50th episode of Badger Bizarre, "Wisconsin UFOlogy." There's a lot to be worried about when out on the ice. Top of mind would be the threat of falling through. There's no more disconcerting a noise than that of a moaning fracture from beneath. Usually it's just the lake suffering some indigestion, but on Michigan's Sturgeon Bay, back in January of 1929, a fisherman trying to snag some food almost became it when the black maw to the growling belly below split open in an attempt to swallow him. Lewis Sweet escaped that fate, only to find himself being served on a platter. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, Wisconsin (courtesy photo) Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, established in 1868, is on a 76-foot bluff in Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin. The square tower, constructed of Cream City brick from Milwaukee, is connected to the keeper's house. The light served to guide shipping through the Strawberry Channel. In its active history (1868-1926), there were only three keepers. William Duclon served an impressive 35 years (1883-1918). He and his wife raised seven sons at the light station. When the lamp was automated with acetylene gas in 1926, the era of resident keepers and their families at Eagle Bluff came to a close. 1905 view from the water (courtesy photo) Keeper William Duclon and his wife Julia lived at Eagle Bluff for 35 years (courtesy photo) The Door County Historical Society in Wisconsin operates two historic sites: Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park and Heritage Village at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay. Restoring and furnishing Eagle Bluff Lighthouse began in 1960 and took three years to complete. Since that time, the society has maintained the site and offered tours during the summer and fall months. Interviewed in this episode is Amy Frank, executive director of the Door County Historical Society.
Hans Christian, classically trained as a cellist in his native Germany, emigrated to 1980s Hollywood to study bass guitar and pursue a career as a rock musician. More than three decades later, the performer, recording engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist has lived a fascinating story (complete with famous people like Billy Idol, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ram Dass, to name just three) – including his serendipitous meeting in San Francisco with Northern Sky's Doc Heide and Fred Alley, planting the seed about a place called Door County that Christian today calls home. Christian talks with Debra Fitzgerald about his career, his current work at his Studio 330 in Sturgeon Bay – and about being nominated for a Grammy in 2023 for his original music, Ocean Dreaming Ocean, in the category of New Age/Ambient/Chant.

What happens when a child learns they are 'worth' $80 every two weeks? Today on Money Tales, our guest is Melissa Ripp, an entrepreneur who reflects on how her childhood experiences—like learning the amount her dad paid in child support—deeply shaped her relationship with money. We'll explore how those early lessons influenced her entrepreneurial journey and her drive for financial independence. This conversation goes deep into the emotional side of money and the lasting impact of those early money moments. Melissa “Mel” Ripp is an engaging keynote speaker, proud entrepreneur, and passionate Wisconsinite who believes that everyone—no matter where they're from, what they do, or who they do it for—has something incredible to offer the world. With over 20 years of experience in nonprofit and corporate marketing and communications, Mel has guided several organizations in a variety of niches and industries—performing arts and music, historic preservation, tourism, K-12 education and education technology, manufacturing, insurance and finance, healthcare, and social services in telling their stories and communicating their “whys” to their audiences. Jumping into full-time entrepreneurship six years ago, Mel is the founder and CEO of Peapod Marketing & PR Consulting, a marketing and thought leadership consultancy that works to elevate the ideas and perspectives of women executives and entrepreneurs by helping them develop an authentic platform for their expertise through messaging development, social media and content creation, and public relations strategies. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in English with a Creative Writing emphasis and a Communication Arts degree with an emphasis in Radio, Film, and Television production. When she's not working with clients or dreaming up her next big idea, Mel is probably hanging out with her two biggest fans—husband Zack and cat Poseidon, driving with the music cranked down a country road in her home of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, or buying yet another houseplant for her office. Houseplant count: 43.

The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Lincoln County: https://bit.ly/3QvVgDlThe Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation: Ana, Eric, and Jake explore winter activities in Wisconsin with an eye on the more unique approaches. Sure, you can go skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and partake in many of the other typical winter activities, but how about sleigh rides, skijoring, and everybody's favorite New Year's activity (or one to avoid), the polar bear dips? We cover where you can take a sleigh ride across the winter season, not just during Christmas; how skijoring became popular in Wisconsin and places where you can partake, competitively or just for fun; plus some of the most famous places to jump into the frigid waters of Wisconsin's lakes to ring in the New Year, and a number of polar bear dips happening yet this winter, including February and March, in which you can partake. Ice boating is another popular sport you don't find in many other states, but we cover the history, the unique nature of this sport, and how Wisconsin has some of the best (frozen) waters for ice boating and racing, including some in Madison. Another unique feature is the Ice Caves, which during particularly cold winters form along the shores of Lake Superior off the coast of Bayfield County. They already have boat tours of those areas at times, but when the lake freezes well enough a walk on foot is particularly awe-inspiring. Winter festivals around the state offer some unique takes, including the Scandihoovian Winter Festival in Mount Horeb, JanBoree in Waukesha, the ice drags at the Merrill Winter Festival and more - something we detail both in this episode and in some upcoming. Of course, Wisconsin has a number of unique spots for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing - Jake has you covered on that angle. Yes, winters get long in Wisconsin, but with this guide you can maximize the fun in ways you can't in other states. Join us for the tour! Inside Sponsors:Visit Lake Geneva: https://bit.ly/3wHvilf

Shout-outs are given to some favorite spots for comfort foods around Wisconsin, including Monty's Blue Plate Diner in Madison and Delta Diner in the North Woods in Bayfield County (both for their meat loaf among other dishes!); places like Real Chili in Milwaukee for chili; Mac's and their multiple locations around Wisconsin for incredible mac & cheese combos; Shepherd's Pie from places like Kitty O'Reilly's in Sturgeon Bay, Stone Arch in Appleton, Dublin Square in La Crosse, O'Donoghue's in Elm Grove, or County Clare in Milwaukee; plus Italian pastas, Cornish pasties, plus some key burgers and pizza around the state get highlighted. These are places rumored - and as far as some people are concerned, verified - to be haunted with some crazy and unexplained things that happen. Places like the Bloody Bride Bridge in Stevens Point - can you guess the stories behind that one? The legendary Summerwind Mansion - or what's left of it - deep in the North Woods has had numerous reports of hauntings and more ever since its construction, the mysterious fire, and the aftermath ever since. Cemeteries are always rife with haunting rumors, and the Dartford Cemetery in Green Lake has a special reputation that Brick discusses. Similar for Sanitarium Hill in Madison, with plenty of history that just might freak you out. Milwaukee's Ambassador Hotel has long been rumored to be haunted, as is Shaker's Cigar Bar in Walker's Point, which gives ghost tours. Manitowoc, home of Windigo Fest, has a major World War II-era submarine called the USS Cobia in the water and plenty of hauntings have been reported on the sub, where people can still spend the night. In Marinette County, McClintock County Park near Silver Cliff gives you an outdoor area to explore and make yourself vulnerable, while on the Door Peninsula the Institute Saloon lets you raise a glass of beer with the ghosts that hang out there. And the legend of the Mabel Tainter Theater in Menomonie is just not for elegant beauty in its architecture and staging wonderful shows; it, like many theaters, has some spooky stuff happening when the curtain is down. We discuss all of these and more in Haunted Wisconsin on the episode of The Cabin. Inside Sponsors:Best Western Hotels: https://bit.ly/3zCCK3fMarshfield Clinic: https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj

Jon Jarosh from Destination Door County joins for a look at the Door County Coastal Byway, 66 miles of beauty and charming towns on the Door Peninsula along Highways 42 and 57, from Sturgeon Bay north to beautiful coasts, state and county parks, and towns like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, Baileys Harbor, and Jacksonport. Mary Motiff from Bayfield County (and the mayor of its county seat, Washburn) joins for the Lake Superior Scenic Byway conversation. The Byway covers 70 miles along Highway 13 in Bayfield County, showing off the beauty of the northern coast of the state from near Ashland through Washburn and Bayfield over to Cornucopia, Port Wing, and Herbster with beaches, forest, orchards, wineries, and even the first National Tribal Park in the nation along the way. Josh Ostermann joins Eric and Ana in The Cabin for a look at the others (yes, pizza gets a mention.) The Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway is the newest, covering 145 miles through the Nicolet National Forest and along the beautiful Wolf River, which has a National Scenic River designation. It winds through Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas Counties along segments of Highways 55, 52, 32, and 70 with connections to a wide variety of multi-use, all-season trails. The Lower Wisconsin River State Scenic Byway covers 100 miles along Highway 60 from Lodi to Bridgeport by Prairie du Chien, giving you a nice cross-section of Wisconsin's incredible Driftless Area and the shifting courses of the Wisconsin River and its valley. Finally, Wisconsin's segment of the Great River Road gets covered as it runs along the Mississippi River from East Dubuque to Prescott. This multi-state byway actually begins in Minnesota and follows the Mississippi River for 10 states until it ends in New Orleans, Louisiana, but Wisconsin's segment is the most scenic (by many measures, not just ours!) It covers 250 miles, much of it along Highway 35, through 33 river towns. These include some of the oldest settlements in the state, the dynamic city of La Crosse as well as Prairie du Chien (the only place where two state designated scenic byways meet) and charming smaller towns like Trempealeau, Stockholm, Pepin, Alma, Fountain City, and Potosi. You can enjoy many scenic overlooks, with some great birding opportunities including bald eagles. All in all, Wisconsin's five designated scenic byways provide over 600 miles of road trip beauty and fun. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4 Campfire Conversation:Eric and Ana – with Logan too – hit the water in this Campfire Conversation, highlighting some Wisconsin's “Must Visit” water recreation locations. Much of the conversation begins in the north, with the Apostle Islands and its bevy of options in Lake Superior. The Brule River, known as the “River of Presidents” for its history as a popular fishing and getaway spot for U.S. presidents in the early 20th century, also gets some love as its flows into Lake Superior not too far to the west. Hopping the subcontinental divide, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway offers all of fun and natural beauty you could expect from a river. The Wild Rivers Conservancy is active along the river, and the waterfalls coupled with fishing, paddling, and hiking along the shore offer abundant options for an adventurous day. We also cover the Vets on the River Program, which is active on the St. Croix. Flowing into the St. Croix in western Wisconsin is the Apple River, which offers tubing, floating, and a variety of popular water recreation activities in the areas around Somerset, making it a big summer destination. Of course the Wisconsin River gets its due, whether you're fishing in the Eagle River area, water skiing with the best of them in Wisconsin Rapids, touring the sandstone and limestone bluffs around Wisconsin Dells, or kayaking the Lower Wisconsin Waterway. The Wolf River runs through much of the North Woods and offers unbelievably amazing fishing. Ana dives into the Madison “chain o' lakes” (literally too, in real life) as she and Eric discuss the many options of Lake Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa in the Capitol region. Other chains of lakes popular in Wisconsin also draw a wide variety of water recreation opportunities, including the chains around Eagle River, the Cisco chain on the Wisconsin-U.P. border west of Land O'Lakes, and the Waupaca Chain O'Lakes. In the south, Geneva Lake and its nearby companions – including Delavan Lake and Lake Como – draw plenty of crowds but still offer areas of serenity. Geneva Lake is one of the deepest spring-fed lakes in the state; Green Lake, in central Wisconsin, takes the title of the deepest. Its also hugely popular for boating, fishing, and water skiing. Up for whitewater rafting? Head to northeastern Wisconsin and check out the rapids on the Menomonee River! Comparisons to rivers in the Mountain West are frequently made to a section of the Menomonee between Niagara and Pembine, where the rapids and drops are truly an adventure. The Peshtigo River in Oconto and Marinette Counties also offers fantastic kayaking and canoeing; the whole area teems with waterfalls. For extra twists and turns, we recommend heading to the Driftless Region in southwestern Wisconsin and exploring the Kickapoo River, which is one of the crookedest rivers in the Midwest – if not the country. Some great options for rentals can be found in Ontario, near Wildcat Mountain State Park. We didn't forget the cities, either: explore charter fishing opportunities off the lakeshore in Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Algoma, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay, Oconto, or Marinette on Lake Michigan, or from Ashland, Bayfield, or Superior on Lake Superior! And for paddling in urban areas, it's hard to beat the La Crosse area on the Black and Mississippi Rivers – especially Pools 7 and 8 – or kayaking amidst the bustling action and tall buildings in Milwaukee on the Milwaukee, Menomonee, or Kinnickinnic Rivers in the heart of the city. Let's just say your options are many – and we offer plenty to choose from on The Cabin today! Harmon fished competitively through his high school in Eagle River - anarea amidst the World's Largest Chain of Interconnected Freshwater Lakes – and continues to in college.Fishing teams among schools are growing significantly (which makes sense, since fish cluster in schools, too.) Part of the conversation includes how the tournaments work and how they're growing in thestate. We also discussed best times of the season to fish – depending in part on what types of fish you'reafter – and the benefits or lack thereof of various types of cover. Some locations noted include “pools,” including Pools 7 and 8 in the Mississippi River in the La Crossearea and the Winnebago Pool waters consisting of Lakes Poygan and Butte de Morts along the FoxWaterway heading into Lake Winnebago, where sturgeon spearing is quite popular in winter. The watersin Green Bay and Lake Michigan around the Door Peninsula and Sturgeon Bay offer unique world classfishing opportunities. Chains of lakes include the largest in the Eagle River and St. Germain areas, as wellas the Hayward Lakes chains along with the Chippewa Flowage in northwestern Wisconsin. In centralWisconsin, the chain of lakes around Waupaca and the Mendota/Monona/Waubesa/Kegonsa chain in the Madison area offer excellent fishing, with smaller gems nearby like Hope Lake, Lake Ripley, and RockLake in Lake Mills. Spring-fed Green Lake is another fishing gem, and with depth going down severalhundred feet, it is the deepest inland lake in the state. Along with Lake Winnebago, Lake Koshkonongoffers many benefits of shallow lake fishing, especially with many areas offering cover. The manyinterior rivers of Wisconsin offer incredible fishing opportunities, with some of the best being Wolf Riverin northeastern and central Wisconsin, the Brule River in northwestern Wisconsin (known as the “Riverof Presidents” for its history), and the Kickapoo River in the Driftless Area, where trout streams abound.Along the Great Lakes coastlines, areas like Bayfield on Lake Superior and ports at Sheboygan, Algoma,Kewaunee, Port Washington, Racine, and Kenosha offer fantastic options for charter fishing and evenjust fishing off of piers and breakwaters. The bottom line? If you want to fish, Wisconsin has practicallyevery option you could want in nearly every part of the state across every season. WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST AMPLFYING WISCONSIN MUSIC EPISODE 106 Sam Boettcher of BLAME IT ON CAIN If you've found yourself poking around iTunes lately, you've probably bumped into a litany of highly-polished, over compressed, auto-tuned pop music. Boring. “What happened to Rock?”, you wonder. Happily, it's right here ... in Beertown, USA. Blame It On Cain. Rock Done Right. The band released their debut album, ‘Rhythm Schism' in 2008 and the album stretched beyond the usual boundaries of local radio and internet play. Their song, “Yesterday's Happy” was released nationally on a compilation CD from Versailles Records. “Miami Beach” was the theme song for an animated web-series based on the east coast. And the band was invited on stage with Brian Vander Ark of the Verve Pipe, to sit in on a couple of acoustic numbers with the multi-platinum selling artist. A refreshed sound emerged and the band went back into the studio to record ‘Big Down Under' in 2017. The album instantly received positive reviews from critics and fans, and the initial printing sold-out. With little down time, the band went back to writing and, in May 2019, released, ‘Amp Grease'. The album features eight newly recorded tunes and explores a number of different textures. Their latest album - “Implied Maturity” - features 9 new, eclectic songs; from the bluesy “Blush” to the reflective “Summerhill”, and from the gritty-drive of “Story Of Your Lies” to the delicate “Love, Not Change”. The album is a departure from previous releases, as this is the band's first all-acoustic effort. It is available on iTunes, Amazon Music, Bandcamp, Pandora and other streaming services. The idea to do an all-acoustic album came after Cain played a set at an unplugged festival in Sturgeon Bay. The band then used the pandemic and lockdown to their advantage, by slowly writing and continually reworking the album until they were satisfied with the result. Here's our latest podcast with Sarah Branson (A Merry Life, Sooner Started Press, April 2022). Our discussion ranges from what it's like to build a world that's set 300 years in the future but still keep it character-driven (“Like historical fiction that just hasn't happened yet”) to a wise coach's advice to Sarah about marketing an indie book (“No one can buy a book they haven't heard of”) and why she decided her very long book was really a series of four and then chose to release them all within a single year. Award-winning author Sarah Branson was a midwife for close to thirty years, helping families welcome their little ones into their arms in the hospital, at a birth center and at home. Now she writes tales of action, adventure, revenge, and romance featuring airborne pirates. Her stories are set against the backdrop of an Earth changed by fires, floods, and pandemics, but are firmly rooted in the strength and resiliency of the human spirit. Sarah first started conjuring stories of pirates when her family hopped a freighter to Australia when she was seven. She has since grown up, traveling extensively across the US and the globe. She raised her family in Michigan and still longs to swim in Sturgeon Bay and Little Traverse Bay. She has a deep appreciation for people's strength and endurance and fully believes that badass women will inherit the Earth and the Earth will be better for it. Her debut novel, A Merry Life, was chosen as the 2022 Connecticut Adult Fiction winner by the Indie Author Project and was named a 2022 Book of the Year finalist in the action/adventure and science fiction categories by the Independent Author Network. It is the first book in the series Pirates of New Earth. Books 2 and 3: Navigating the Storm and Burn the Ship are available now. The exciting conclusion of the series, Blow the Man Down is slated for February 2023. Sarah lives with her husband in Connecticut. To learn more about Sarah, click here.

Immigration problems, climate issues, dysfunctional families, road barricades, and the division between haves and have nots play a role in this dream-like novel. Set in Wisconsin's stunning Northwoods, News of the Air (Black Lawrence Press, 2022) by Jill Stukenberg centers on a mother, father, and their teenage daughter, who voice the story from each of their perspectives. The novel opens with a pregnant Allie recalling her divorce, worried about her future, avoiding roadblocks to get to work at a Chicago museum, and frantic because of nearby eco-terrorism. In the next chapter, Allie and her husband Bud are proprietors of a far north rustic resort, and their previously homeschooled daughter Cassie, is about to finish her schooling in the local high school. Then two children show up in a canoe, and there is confusion about who they are and what they're doing in the Northwoods. Jill Stukenberg's short stories have appeared in Midwestern Gothic, The Collagist (now The Rupture), Wisconsin People and Ideas magazine, and other literary magazines. News of the Air, her debut novel, won the Big Moose prize from Black Lawrence Press. Stukenberg is a graduate of the MFA program at New Mexico State University, has received writing grants from the University of Wisconsin Colleges, and has been awarded writing residencies at Shake Rag Alley and Write On, Door County. Nearly 50 years after his wife's death, an 86-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison. According to court records, Richard Pierce was convicted of first-degree murder and disinterment of a corpse April 29 and received the mandatory life sentence Friday, Aug. 5. The disinterment conviction led to Pierce serving an extra three years in Door County, according to WBAY-TV. In 1975, Carol Jean Pierce, Richard Pierce's wife, disappeared from their home in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and wasn't reported missing for almost three months. According to a detective who worked on the case, Pierce kept his wife's body at their house before moving it years later. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Richard Pierce was arrested in October 2018 in Cheboygan, Michigan, where he reportedly moved after Carol Jean disappeared in September 1975. According to reports, he was a member of the Coast Guard and was about to retire. Carol Jean and Richard Pierce "would often get into heated arguments" in front of friends or guests, according to Pierce's criminal complaint. A friend of Carol Jean reported that "her marriage to the defendant was volatile." In one instance, Carol Jean told her neighbor that she believed the defendant was going to kill her due to bruises on her body. Pierce and other Coast Guard members returned to Sturgeon Bay on Sept. 5, 1975. He reportedly returned the following day and said Carol Jean had "taken off" and withdrawn $20,000 from their savings account. On Sept. 8, 1975, Pierce told his shipmates Carol Jean had left him. When Pierce's neighbor and his neighbor's wife checked on him, they noticed several of Carol Jean's items remained in the house, including her makeup and cat. He moved to Cheboygan, Michigan, Sept. 22, 1975, just as he had planned before his wife disappeared. Carol Jean's mother called the Sturgeon Bay Police on Oct. 14, 1975, concerned about her daughter's welfare because she had not heard from her since August. On Nov. 29, 1975, he reported her missing. According to an acquaintance, Pierce's behavior did not change significantly between Carol Jean's disappearance and his retirement. "Pierce's demeanor didn't change whatsoever after Carol Jean disappeared, and it seemed he couldn't care less about Carol Jean's welfare," said another witness. In October 1975, Pierce met Rose Marlene Box at a bar, and the two married in June 1978. Pierce killed his wife, according to the criminal complaint, because he "gained numerous advantages resulting from Carol Jean's disappearance, including an unencumbered pension; most of their marriage's valuable possessions; land and a home in Michigan; a new girlfriend weeks after Carol Jean disappeared; and the benefit of Carol Jean's silence." Pierce argued that his wife had left him and ran away, and that he was innocent, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Apparently, cadaver dogs searched his property in 2018 and detected the scent of human remains, but no remains were found. As Carol Jean's sister said during the sentencing hearing, "Richard Pierce is a heartless, cold, lying monster, and now he is a murderer. I hope and pray he rots in prison."
