TIMESTAMP: (1:35) Natalee Holloway had the world had her feet when she went on a graduation trip to Aruba in 2005. She was enjoying spending time with her friends in a beautiful destination. One night, towards the end of her vacation, Natalee went to a nightclub on the island where she would run into Joran van der Sloot. This encounter would change the lives of the Holloway family forever. Natalee was not seen alive again after this night. As of November 2023, her remains have still not been found. Over the years, Joran van der Sloot has confessed to his involvement in Natalee's disappearance and death many times. He has also taken back his confessions and changed his stories frequently. In 2010, five years to the day that Natalee vanished, Joran met Stephany Flores in a casino in Peru. They went back to his hotel room where he brutally murdered her with a tennis racquet. Joran was eventually sentenced to 28 years in prison for this murder. In October 2023, Joran gave another confession and gave details as to how he brutally killed Natalee on an Aruban beach in 2005. Natalee's mother Beth believes his story. “It's over. Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter's murder. He is the killer,” Beth said. No one knows the agony Natalee Holloway went through when the hands of Joran Van Der Sloot killed her. On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, Joran finally confessed to the killing of the Alabama teenager in 2006. He took a plea deal from prosecutors and admitted to the killing in an Alabama courthouse. He was sentenced to 20 years, which will begin when he completes his current sentence for the murder of a Peruvian college student, Stephany Flores, in 2010. An Alabama judge accepted Joran van der Sloot's plea deal, meaning today, after almost two decades, the Dutch national admitted that he killed Alabama teen Natalee Holloway. In his proffer, a document in which the defendant offers information about a crime, he reportedly told the court that Holloway rejected his sexual advances, so he hit her, kicked her in the face, then bludgeoned her dead. He then put her body in the ocean. The confession was part of van der Sloot's plea deal on extortion charges. He was accused of trying to sell information to Beth Holloway on the location of her daughter's body for $250,000. With his guilty plea, van der Sloot was sentenced to 20 years on the federal charges, which will run concurrently with his current sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru. Joran van der Sloot is a Dutch national who gained notoriety for his involvement in two high-profile criminal cases.Disappearance of Natalee Holloway: In 2005, van der Sloot was a key suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an American teenager who went missing while on vacation in Aruba. Despite extensive investigations, Natalee's remains were never found, and van der Sloot was not charged in connection with her disappearance.Murder of Stephany Flores: In 2010, Joran van der Sloot was arrested and charged with the murder of Stephany Flores, a Peruvian woman he met in a Lima casino. He confessed to killing her in his hotel room, and he was subsequently sentenced to 28 years in prison in Peru. Now, almost 25 years after the fact, he is in America and facing charges. Those charges however, do not include murder. In our next article we swing down to South Carolina to check in on Alex Murdaugh and his pursuit of a new trial due to prosecutorial misconduct after his legal team says that the law clerk overseeing his trial was biased against him and engaged in jury tampering. His legal team filed an appeal due to this issue and now the appeals court has granted him a hearing. Will Murdaugh's conviction get tossed? Will he get a new trial? Joran van der Sloot will soon be on his way to the U.S. to face extortion and wire fraud charges after demanding Natalee Holloway's family pay him $250,000 in exchange for the location of Holloway's body. Van der Sloot, who is serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores, will be sent to the U.S. under a "temporary surrender" from the Peruvian government. The surrender is set to last for one year and could be extended for another in the case of any delays in the trial. In 2005, 18-year-old Natalee Holloway went missing while on a graduation trip to Aruba with her fellow classmates. According to her peers, Natalee was last seen leaving a club with Joran van der Sloot, a man who would soon become the prime suspect in her disappearance. While serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, van der Sloot is to be extradited to the United States where he faces charges of extortion and wire fraud. WBRC Anchor Jonathan Hardison has been covering the story from Birmingham, AL for years now. He discusses the timeline of events in the Natalee Holloway case, as well as the extradition and trial awaiting van der Sloot. Later, he shares the impact Natalee's disappearance has left on the community of Birmingham 18 years later. Follow Emily on Instagram: @realemilycompagno Learn more about your ad choices. It's been nearly two decades since Alabama teen Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba. Now, the man last seen with Holloway and also the man suspected of killing her will be extradited to the US. Joran van der Sloot will not be on trial for Holloway's murder however, but for extortion of money from her mother, Beth Holloway. Beth Holloway says van der Sloot reached out to an attorney promising to explain what happened to Natalee and lead authorities to the remains. He asked for $250,000, which was $25,000 wired to him as part of an FBI sting. This is the basis of the current wire fraud and extortion charges against him. Van der Sloot fled Aruba to Peru where he was arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. She died five years, to the day, of Natalee's disappearance. Joran van der Sloot was convicted and has been serving a 28-year prison sentence. An extradition treaty with Peru is making temporary extradition possible. In 2005 Natalee Holloway visited Aruba along with over 100 of her classmates. Less than a week after graduating, Natalee disappeared outside a bar and nightclub in Aruba. Almost immediately, authorities zero in on their prime suspect, a local teen known to harass tourists, Joran van der Sloot. Unfortunately, despite having everything shy of hard evidence, Joran was not arrested. It wasn't until he had another encounter with a woman, Stephany Flores Ramirez, precisely five years following his encounter with Natalee, that he was put behind bars for an extended period of time. Over 17 years later, Natalee's case remains a mystery. However, the likely perpetrator, Joran, is serving time for a separate crime. Stephany Flores was Killed on May 30th, 2010 by Joran Van Der Sloot. He was also the prime suspect in the disappearance and suspected murder of Alabama teen, Natalee Holloway exactly 5 years to the date.
Aruba, Mai 2005. On May 30, 2010, Stephany Flores Ramirez, 21, met a handsome young man at the poker tables at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, Peru. She had no way of knowing that the day she met 22-year-old Joran van der Sloot was the 5th anniversary of the disappearance of another girl he'd been accused of killing -- Natalie Holloway. After Stephany went back to Joran's hotel room, she never emerged again, and Peruvian police were on an international manhunt for a man many suspected already got away with murder once before.
