In this episode I talk with Dr. John J. Collins, Holmes Professor of Old Testament Criticism and Interpretation Emeritus at Yale University and the world's leading scholar of apocalypticism and apocalyptic literature, about his brand-new book Apocalypticism as a Worldview in Ancient Judaism, out June 25, 2026 on Eerdmans. Dr. Collins discusses his career and life-long interest in apocalypticism and his role in formulating the standard definition of apocalyptic literature. He explains how ‘apocalyptic' should only be used as an adjective and why the noun ‘apocalypticism', denoting a worldview of related concepts, is more appropriate. When then discuss how apocalypticism works in ancient Judaism and its primary characteristics, including a view of history which offers a hope beyond ‘the end', the use of myths and symbolism to communicate apocalyptic ideas, the cosmic scope of apocalypticism which includes a spiritual realm inhabited by spiritual beings which are sometimes at war with humanity, and the social and political crises which generate apocalypticism. We also discuss the relationship between millenarianism and apocalypticism, why early Christians transmitted apocalyptic literature, how apocalypticism manifests itself in modernity, and the impact of apocalypticism on Christian theology in today. On the highways that cut through the American Midwest, where headlights stretch into darkness and exits blur past without memory, a predator moved unnoticed for years. Larry Eyler didn't look like a killer; he blended in, a quiet man drifting between Indiana and Illinois, offering rides to young men who would never be seen again. Their bodies would later be found miles apart, scattered across counties and backroads, each discovery raising questions no one yet knew how to connect. It wasn't until the pattern emerged—too late for many—that investigators realized they were chasing not separate crimes, but a single, methodical force moving along the highways themselves. And even after his arrest, the full truth of what Eyler had done would remain buried, waiting until the very end to surface in a confession that revealed a scale of violence far greater than anyone had imagined.SOURCES: 1) Crime Library: Larry Eyler, the Highway Murderer2) The Roanoke Times: Killer Confesses to Killing 21 Men3) Crime Online: "Highway Killer" Larry Eyler's Victim Identified after 40 Years4) UPI: Lawyer: Eyler was serial killer5) The Washington Post: Killer Confessed to 21 More Deaths6) The Midwest Crime Files Podcast: The Highway Killer: The Victims of Larry Eyler7) Larry Eyler's Wikipedia Page
On January 6th, 2021, Pam Hemphill followed the Proud Boys to the Capitol, got trampled by the mob, was carried out by a police officer named Joe, and recorded every minute of it. The internet called her the MAGA Granny. She did 60 days in federal prison. And then, slowly, she woke up. When Trump issued sweeping pardons for more than 1,500 January 6th defendants, Pam did something almost no one else did. She said no. She filed a formal letter of rejection, returned to the Capitol to apologize to officers in person, received death threats, lost a 12-year relationship, and kept talking anyway. In a series about people who got pardons they didn't deserve, Pam Hemphill is the one who deserved consideration and walked away from it anyway. You've heard about January 6th. Every company dreams of having a prominent Wikipedia page, but navigating the path to it is far from simple. Oh, so you want a Wikipedia page? So does everyone else, and it's increasingly harder to achieve. Rhi Ruff, Founding Partner at Lumino Digital, has had a front-row seat to Wikipedia's rise in popularity during the AI era. In this episode, Rhi breaks down why Wikipedia is more valuable than ever, explains the challenges that SaaS and AI businesses face in securing a Wikipedia page, (with near-impossible editorial guidelines), and what steps companies can take to improve their chances. Rhi also shares insights into the increasing challenge of securing quality media coverage and what brands can do to influence Wikipedia when securing a page isn't likely.
Carranza Medina was a 42-year-old fisherman killed when the U.S. military bombed his small boat in the Caribbean off Colombia's coast on September 15, 2025, in a strike the Trump administration described as targeting drug traffickers. In this podcast, we have a conversation with human rights lawyer and author Dan Kovalik, who represents the Carranza family and has filed a petition before the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights arguing that the United States carried out an extrajudicial killing and violated both his right to life and Colombia's sovereignty. Kovalik discusses the escalating U.S. military intervention in the Caribbean, analyzing the blockade of Venezuela, deadly strikes on suspected drug boats, and the return of "gunboat diplomacy" under the Trump administration's new "Monroe Doctrine." The conversation broadens to include the political struggle across Latin America, speculating why the progressive "Pink Tide" has receded and how right-wing forces have become ascendant. From the coups in Bolivia to the resilience of Cuba and Nicaragua, Kovalik draws crucial lessons for the left. Finally, the hosts confront the parallel erosion of democratic norms at home, the weaponization of the law, the dismantling of the administrative state, and the silent crisis in due process. This is a sobering yet essential analysis of modern imperialism and the urgent fight to inform and mobilize public resistance. Dan Kovalik has taught International Human Rights at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he has shared his experience with students and broader audiences on labor struggles, Colombia, and international law. He has lectured internationally on human rights and U.S. foreign policy and has been active in public forums, media appearances, and conferences, including talks on Venezuela and other conflict zones. He is the author of several books, including: The Plot to Scapegoat Russia (2017), on efforts in U.S. politics to vilify Russia. The Plot to Attack Iran and The Plot to Control the World, extending his critique of U.S. foreign policy and election interference abroad. The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela: How the US Is Orchestrating a Coup for Oil, with a foreword by filmmaker Oliver Stone. No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using “Humanitarian” Intervention to Advance Economic and Strategic Interests (co-authored, 2020). The Case for Palestine: Why It Matters and Why You Should Care (2024), with a foreword by George Galloway. On a warm summer morning in Calgary, a family home sat strangely still—a sense of unease settling over the quiet suburban street. Five-year-old Nathan O'Brien had spent the night at his grandparents' house, a place that had always been a sanctuary of comfort and routine. But when his mother arrived the next day, nothing was as it should have been. What began as a welfare check quickly spiraled into one of the most haunting mysteries the city had ever faced. In this episode, we unravel the timeline, the community's desperate search, and the unsettling trail of clues that left investigators scrambling for answers. This is the story of a night that changed everything.SOURCES:1) Calgary triple-murder trial hears DNA from three victims found at suspect's farm2) Appeal Court upholds sentence for man convicted of killing Calgary couple, grandson3) Wikipedia Page for Murders of Nathan O'Brien, Kathryn Liknes and Alvin Liknes4) Timeline of events in the case of the missing 5-year-old and his grandparents5) Douglas Garland triple-murder trial: medical examiner says victims ‘may still have been alive'6) The Nathan O'Brien Foundation7) Family of Nathan O'Brien launches children's foundation with $1 million donation8) Douglas Garland killed Calgary couple and grandson over 'petty grudge,' court hears9) ‘He neither forgave nor forgot': Crown says Garland planned triple murder10) How the Man Who Committed One of Canada's Most Gruesome Murders Was Caught

Michael Hardt returned to discuss his most recent book, The Subversive Seventies. Hardt argues that the 1970s offers an inspiring and useful guide for contemporary radical political thought and action. Although we can still learn much from the movements of the sixties, that decade's struggles for peace, justice, and freedom fundamentally marked the end of an era. The movements of the seventies, in contrast, responded directly to emerging neoliberal frameworks and other structures of power that continue to rule over us today. They identified and confronted political problems that remain central for us. The 1970s, in this sense, marks the beginning of our time. Looking at a wide range of movements around the globe, from the United States, to Guinea Bissau, South Korea, Chile, Turkey, and Italy, The Subversive Seventies provides a reassessment of the political action of the 1970s that sheds new light not only on our revolutionary past but also on what liberation can be and do today. VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023 - Show Notes Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns. FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death. The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023) Thanks again to Keith for the show notes and thanks to everyone for listening - please tell a friend (or benignly neutral acquaintance) and ask them to do the same! On this episode of The AUXORO Podcast, Noah Kahan and I get into how to nail a first date, Noah's fake Wikipedia page, how therapy can be a great tool to better know yourself, Noah's encounters with internet trolls, wisdom from The Office's Michael Scott, and more. This episode with Noah Kahan was originally released on the podcast back in 2019. I wanted to re-release this conversation because Noah is one of my favorite artists who has exploded within the past year, and also, when I first released this episode I had a much smaller audience than what I have today and I wanted to introduce it to the vast majority of AUXORO listeners who may have missed it. Enjoy. Guest Bio: Noah Kahan is a singer-songwriter and artist from Strafford, Vermont. His breakout track 'Stick Season' was recently certified platinum. Sidekick Shak Standley double-checked to make sure she has died at this point, and she has. Our guest this week is Jesse White of Chicago, who is the recently retired Illinois Secretary of State, who served in that capacity for 24 years and under five governors. Prior to serving as Secretary of State, he was the Cook County Recorder of Deeds for seven years and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives for 16 years. Prior to his five decades long political career he served as a paratrooper in the US Army and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division and Illinois National Guard. Jesse was also a Chicago Public School teacher and administrator for 33 years. He also played minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs after his time in the Army. Perhaps, most impressively, starting in 1959 he founded the Jesse White Tumblers, which has provided more than 19,000 at-risk youth (girls and boys) with training and guidance to make positive choices and learn important lessons for life. Jesse White Tumbler teams have performed at countless parades, NFL, MLB, and NBA games. They have also performed all over the U.S. and dozens of countries around the world. Amazingly, fewer than two dozen of them have gotten into trouble with the law. It's an inspirational story about growing up in an era of discrimination, overcoming constant obstacles, striving for success in so many different venues and making a tangible difference in the life of youth through discipline and determination. Here are show notes. Danny Fields: A Man who Changed the Face of Rock N Roll from Greenwich Village New York City is a city of neighborhoods, and Greenwich Village is no exception.
