This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records. Other works discussed on this episode include Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man: Far From Home, San Andreas, Lost, Super 8, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrested Development, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Early Edition, Phantom Thread, Saltburn and Love, Actually..., among others. We'll be back next week to kick off a new theme month as we put SepTIMEber in the past and move on to four weeks of frights, as Spooktober begins with a meeting of the minds from George A. Romero and Stephen King: 1982's Creepshow, which is currently streaming north of the border on Hollywood Suite. The rest of the Spooktober schedule includes 1408, The Birds, and our October canon consideration The Thing! It's gonna be a great month, so come on back, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The Big Story
How Sunrise Records became the last music chain standing

Most of the large record chains of the heyday of physical music are gone now. If the chains haven't vanished entirely, most of their stores have, and the last few are disappearing one by one. But somehow...not Sunrise Records. In recent years the chain has been expanding across Canada, buying up Canadian HMV outlets and now boasts more than 80 stores and hundreds of employees. But ... why? And how? What made Sunrise the last Canadian music chain standing, even as music industry revenues crashed, streaming services swallowed the market and much of physical retail in general began struggling? The result is a fascinating look at what distressed businesses are worth, and what consumers really want from their retailers...GUEST: Richard Trapunski, digital editor at Billboard Canada, writing in The Walrus  We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. This week, it's tax time! We crunch the numbers and list a spare bedroom as a home office to boost our returns with the autism-as-a-superpower action thriller The Accountant (2016), directed by Gavin O'Connor, starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons and Jon Bernthal, along with a murderer's row of character actors in a movie that plays on American cable TV all the time. This is a big time Dumb Guy Movie, and your intrepid hosts have mixed opinions on how much it worked for them, but it makes for lively discussion in our longest show to date. Before we start in on this week's movie however, we go deep and spoiler-y on Scream VI (now streaming on Paramount+), and Justin gives his thesis on Mission: Impossible 2 being perhaps the most important pop culture event of the 21st century. The Accountant is not currently available for streaming in Canada at the time of publication, though you can buy it on DVD for $6 at Sunrise Records. We'll be back next week with Affleck in the director's chair as we discuss Gone Baby Gone.

Doug joins us from his home in the Hamilton area, Ontario. Doug is a serial entrepreneur, owning several brick & mortar companies that together employ over 20,000 people. After high school, he decided that university wasn't for him and began exploring how he could create his own path. And like an artist, create is what he did. We discuss several themes that are important to him: the influence of his family and his parents in his life, having a healthy dose of an inferiority complex, the desire to be underestimated and over-prepared, how to own the coin flip and refusing to accept “no”. Doug charms us with his boyish attitude towards exploration and seeing the magic of creating in the moment. He also shares his experience of being on his death bed in his 20s and how that changed his view on short term vs long term living.   To DONATE to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. RETAIL MATTERS to Doug Putman

While others run away from bricks and mortar retail, Doug Putman races in. What began as a single fruit stand in his teens, now bears billions of dollars in sales. Today Doug Putman owns HMV in Canada and the United Kingdom, Toys"R"Us and Babies R Us in Canada, FYE - For Your Entertainment in the USA, T. Kettle in Canada, Sunrise Records and he is only 37 years old. This is his incredible story and within, Doug offers so many lessons and my standing ovation for believing in retail and all `the energy and jobs it provides to the community and economy.  So how did Doug accomplish so much in under 20 years? 1)His first retail venture was owning a Fruit Stand, which he quickly scaled to five. Learn the lessons he learned about cash flow, perishable fruit, and why hiring friends isn't always the answer. 2)His next big move was dropping out of first-year University as this wasn't his path. Doug joined his family's small collectible business as a warehouse helper making minimum wage. 3)Doug moved into sales, honed his ability to evaluate risk and reward, and his family let him try ideas and fail. 4)One day, an opportunity came from his top customer, Sunrise Records, and an owner that was retiring. That opportunity changed his life. Doug went from being their supplier to becoming their owner. 5)Today, Doug Putman is proving that retail is viable in Canada, United Kingdom and the USA, if you execute according to the lessons he has learned, and willingly shares. Please share with entrepreneurs, small business owners, those who aspire to be in charge of their own destiny and all who love retail. Mike reconnects with Sunrise Records Owner Doug Putnam to find out how his big bet on physical music has paid off. Mike and Doug first spoke about a year ago when Sunrise announced it was taking over more than 80 retail spaces across Canada that were left vacant by HMV's sudden closing. In under one year, Sunrise Records rapidly grew from a nine-store Ontario-based music retailer to nearly 100 stores across Canada. Doug explains why declining CD sales for new music is not a good indicator of the format’s overall health and how he was able to convince records labels, which lost a lot of money when HMV closed, to support his expansion. Doug and Mike also discuss the significance of big box stores like Best Buy dropping CDs from their shelves, how streaming influences in-store shopping behaviour, record release strategies, and more. Plus, Andrew and Mike share some thoughts on the 2018 JUNO Awards broadcast and performances, and see how they fared with their predictions from last week.
