On the night of Oct. 16, Jews around Canada will welcome the holiday of Sukkot, having erected temporary wooden or cloth structures outside their synagogues and homes. While celebrating in their makeshift shacks, many will tell stories of the huts that ancient Israelites lived in after their exodus from Egypt. Meanwhile, in modern-day Canada, a different kind of exodus is happening across the country: young Jewish families, along with Canadians of all stripes, are finding themselves priced out of the housing market, fleeing their native cities to find affordable homes in ever-farther destinations. While the cost of a sukkah kit may seem steep these days, in the hundreds or low thousands, it pales it comparison to the national average cost of a house: nearly $650,000. As a result, housing organizations are stepping in to find creative solutions. One such company with deep Jewish roots is Ourboro, whose COO, Eyal Rosenblum, is the son of Israeli immigrants. The company essentially buys a stake in your house by lending you up to $250,000 for your down payment. Whatever the percentage of the down payment is, that's what you'll have to pay them back once you sell. The idea has caught on, with real estate developer Miles Nadal having joined Ourboro as a key investor. Eyal Rosenblum joins The CJN Daily to explain how this concept can help some Canadians afford homes sooner, and why his Jewish values align with the idea. What we talked about Read more about Ourboro, and how it works to help homebuyers afford a 20 percent downpayment on their first home. (See the math). Our guest for today's podcast is Amanda Moore, CEO and Co-Founder of Aurora Peak Capital, a mission-driven investment firm, dedicated to alleviating the U.S. housing affordability crisis through investments in below market-rate multifamily housing communities. Amanda's first home in the United States was an affordable housing complex in Los Angeles County. Amanda is on a mission to ensure affordable housing parallels her childhood experience: provide low -income families a safe environment where they are proud to call home and can thrive against the backdrop of a housing crisis: lack of affordable, safe, and quality housing. Amanda has over 20 years of real estate experience, starting her career as an underwriter and then transitioning to become a capital raiser for Starwood Capital's notable opportunistic global funds, covering Asia and U.S. institutional investors. Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. Today we have an incredible discussion that spans the world of private credit and the growth of women's sports - and how those two topics intersect in the guest's daily life.Chris Long founded Palmer Square Capital Management, an approximately $29B+ asset manager focused on corporate and structured credit with offices in Kansas City and London, in June 2009. Currently, he serves as Chairman, CEO, and Portfolio Manager. Since inception, Chris has been successful in building one of the premier credit investment firms in the world that includes clients across institutions, family offices, RIAs, bank / trust, and broker dealers. Prior to starting Palmer Square, Chris built a deep investment background at some of the top financial firms in the world, including Morgan Stanley, TH Lee Putnam Ventures, and JP Morgan. In December 2020, Chris added the title of Professional Sports Team Owner, as he joined Co-Founder and Owner Angie Long and Co-Owner Brittany Mahomes in bringing a National Women's Soccer League franchise to Kansas City. The KC Current launched on an extraordinary timeline, playing its first professional match just 124 days after the franchise was announced. As owners, Chris, Angie, Brittany, and recent addition to ownership Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, have had a clear vision for not only establishing the best women's soccer club in the world, but also having the KC Current serve as a model for all of women's sports, which was no more apparent than with the recent completion of their new stadium, a $124M project that is the first soccer stadium specifically for a women's professional soccer team.Chris serves on the National Women's Soccer League's (NWSL) Board of Governors and Expansion Committee as well as on the Executive Committee of the Kansas City 2026 World Cup Bid. Chris was recently recognized for winning the prestigious Kansas City Sports Commission's 2022 Sports Executive of the Year and Sports Business Journal's 2022 Power Players — Women's Sports. He and his wife Angie were inducted into the 2023 Junior Achievement of Greater Kansas City Business Hall of Fame.Chris and I had a fascinating conversation that spanned the world of credit and sports team ownership and investing — and how those two worlds are coming together. We discussed:How Chris and his team built a $29B asset manager in the credit space. Why he believes that private credit's growth does not represent a systemic risk despite a more lax lending environment due to increased capital inflows and increased competition for good deals. Why he believes the one-stop-shop will emerge in credit for both borrowers and LPs.Why a background in credit and investing has been invaluable in understanding how to navigate the business side of building and running a sports franchise. How Chris decided to buy a NWSL team with his wife and co-founder Angie. Why Chris believes investing in women's soccer in the US is like “buying the Boston Celtics in the 1960s.”Why owning your own facilities as a sports team is a huge lever to increase revenues and drive enterprise value. How driving business initiatives for a sports team can help build the community and build the roster. Thanks Chris for coming on the show to share invaluable insights into building elite performers in both the world of finance and the world of women's soccer. Good luck this season with the Current — I'll be rooting for you, except when you play Angel City FC
My guest today is Ali Hamed. Ali was first on Invest Like the Best six years ago. He was 26 at the time and four years into building his investing firm, CoVenture. Both then and now, Ali is an example of what's possible when you think creatively. Six years later, CoVenture now manages two-and-a-half billion dollars, and Ali continues to find alpha in esoteric places. We talk about YouTube catalogs, creative opportunities in real estate, and how venture investing helps them get better at credit. We also talk about his lessons from building an investment firm and what it's been like to work with Michael Ovitz. Please enjoy this great conversation with Ali Hamed. Since then, the firm has grown to manage over $2 billion in for clients. Discerene has one of the most compelling structures and relationships with its LPs of any public investing firm I know. Bob Ackerman argues that, from an investment perspective, cybersecurity is like life sciences - a complex, nuanced field that is difficult field to invest in part-time. So his firm, Allegis Cyber, became one of the first to focus exclusively on investing in cyber startups. In this segment, we'll discuss one of Allegis's recent investments, SixMap, and Bob's other investment/accelerator vehicle, Data Tribe. Data Tribe sources investments from national intelligence, with examples like Dragos that came through this program. This week in the enterprise news, we explore the harsh realities of the startup world with a look at recent failures and shutdowns, investigating the factors leading to these setbacks. Meanwhile, Carbon Black makes headlines by breaking away from VMware in what seems like a divestiture within an acquisition, raising questions about the future of the company. We'll also discuss the European Space Agency's venture into cybersecurity for the space industry, revealing that even the vastness of outer space isn't immune to digital threats. Real estate investment firm Ivanhoé Cambridge is facing the same issues as every other investment firm: how do you correctly manage an office portfolio right now? Deconstruct chatted with Pearce about how he's thinking about investing in office right now, opportunities for preferred and mezzanine financing and how it helps to have the support of a hundred-billion-dollar-plus parent company.
Satgana is a next-generation Climate Tech Venture Capital firm investing in the Future of Earth. With an established portfolio of 13 companies of which ~40% are from underrepresented backgrounds. But maybe most interestingly to many, Satgana boasts an outstanding Multiple on Invested Capital (MOIC) of 4.2x on the fund that is currently closing - in other words; here's the opportunity to buy in at 1x to a portfolio that's already achieved quite a mark-up… Seems like impact can go hand-in-hand returns

On June 8, Skye Pillsbury opened the latest edition of her newsletter, The Squeeze, with the header RIP Gimlet. She continued:I'm heartbroken over the news that Spotify has laid off another 200 podcast employees, though I'm not shocked.— Skye Pillsbury, The SqueezeI devoured Alex Blumberg's Startup when it first came out, which was about a year before I started podcasting. Then, I inhaled Reply All when it launched, and despite its later troubles, was genuinely moved by its final episode. I lapped up Blumberg's earnest interviews with entrepreneurs on Without Fail. I even had the privilege of interviewing Blumberg during a course I taught at CreativeLive.I followed Gimlet's acquisition by Spotify with interest (and a healthy dose of skepticism). The bumpy ride that they've had since then was utterly predictable. Though, like Pillsbury, I find the news that Gimlet is no more—at least in any recognizable sense—quite upsetting. This short dispatch is about podcasting and the podcast industry—but really, it's about why we shouldn't judge success—or run companies—using the logic of Wall Street.Footnotes: "RIP Gimlet" in The Squeeze by Skye Pillsbury "Spotify to Layoff 200 Employees in Podcast Strategy Shift" by Amanda Holpuch, New York Times Startup by Alex Blumberg & Gimlet Media (Excerpts from Season 1, Episodes 1, 2, and 4) Reply All by Alex Goldman, Emmanuel Dsotzi, PJ Vogt, and Gimlet Media Without Fail by Alex Blumberg & Gimlet Media "Podcast Companies, Once Walking on Air, Feel the Strain of Gravity" by Reggie Ugwu, New York Times "A U.F.O.
