Movie of the Year: 2006A New Season Begins The Movies of 2006 Podcast Begins: 128 Films Enter the BracketThe movies of 2006 podcast is officially underway, and the Taste Buds are ready to take on one of the richest film years of the 21st century. Ryan, Mike, and Greg kick off the 2006 season on PopFilter by introducing the year, explaining the bracket structure, and beginning the first round of eliminations. Furthermore, Part 1 of the intro sets the tone for a season packed with genuine heavyweights, unlikely contenders, and some of the most debated films of the decade.2006 delivered a field that refuses to cooperate with easy rankings. The Departed sits alongside Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, and Little Miss Sunshine in the same calendar year. Additionally, Casino Royale, The Prestige, Babel, Borat, and Idiocracy all arrived in 2006, representing wildly different visions of what cinema can accomplish. The Taste Buds have their work cut out for them.About the 2006 Film Year2006 stands as one of the most celebrated film years of the decade. Martin Scorsese's The Departed swept the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and earning Scorsese his first Oscar for Best Director. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro delivered Pan's Labyrinth, a Spanish-language dark fantasy that works equally as a fairy tale and a historical horror. Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men earned near-universal acclaim for its singular, one-take-heavy vision of a dying civilization. The box office reflected 2006's breadth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest topped the global charts. Casino Royale relaunched the Bond franchise with Daniel Craig in his debut as 007. Cars kept Pixar's winning streak intact. Moreover, the comedies were just as crowded: Borat, Talladega Nights, Idiocracy, and Clerks II each built devoted audiences. Consequently, building a bracket from this year means making choices that will draw genuine disagreement from all directions.International cinema contributed heavily to 2006's depth. Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel earned seven Academy Award nominations after competing at Cannes. Pedro Almodóvar's Volver brought Penélope Cruz one of her most celebrated screen performances. The year also produced major releases from Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain), Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette), Christopher Nolan (The Prestige), and Mel Gibson (Apocalypto). In practice, few years in recent memory offer this density of debate-worthy titles across this many genres. The movies of 2006 represent a year when every corner of the industry produced something worth arguing about. How the Movie of the Year Bracket WorksMovie of the Year uses a bracket format borrowed from sports tournaments. The Taste Buds seed 128 films from a given year and match them head-to-head across multiple rounds until one earns the title of best of the year. The movies of 2006 provide an especially deep pool to draw from. Each round cuts the field in half: 128 to 64, 64 to 32, 32 to the Sweet 16, and on through the Elite Eight, Final Four, and championship. Notably, the bracket covers the full range of the year — prestige titles, genre pictures, comedies, blockbusters, and deep cuts all compete on equal footing. The seeding and matchups drive the conversation. A high-seeded favorite facing a scrappy underdog often produces the most spirited debates, because the Taste Buds evaluate every film on its own terms. No film earns an automatic pass based on reputation alone. A beloved blockbuster can fall in round one. A smaller film can advance much further than anyone expects. Therefore, the bracket functions as a pressure test for every assumption the hosts carry into the season. The format also distinguishes Movie of the Year from a standard best-of list. The hosts cannot simply rank their favorites and close the debate. Instead, they defend each pick against a direct opponent, round after round. Above all, the bracket produces arguments that a list never could, because every vote carries immediate consequences. To see what this process looks like across a full season, the Movie of the Year archive includes complete coverage of every year the Taste Buds have tackled, including the recently completed 1971 season. The 2006 First Round: Inside the Movies of 2006 Podcast BracketThe first round of the 2006 season pits 64 matchups against one another and cuts the field in half. Part 1 of the intro covers the opening set of battles, with Part 2 completing the round. Even the quickest first-round decisions carry weight, because an early upset can remove a major contender long before the serious rounds begin.2006 gives the hosts no shortage of compelling first-round scenarios. High-profile releases like Superman Returns, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Blood Diamond arrive as recognizable titles but face real scrutiny on merit. Films like Half Nelson, Brick, and Thank You for Smoking represent the indie side of the year with strong critical backing. Moreover, the international titles — Pan's Labyrinth, Volver, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer — introduce a different set of criteria into the matchups entirely. The documentary field adds another dimension. An Inconvenient Truth became one of 2006's most discussed releases and earned Al Gore an Academy Award. Jesus Camp generated controversy and critical notice in equal measure. Additionally, the horror entries, the prestige dramas like United 93 and The Good Shepherd, and the awards-season crowding all create pressure across the bracket from the opening round. Roger Ebert's four-star review of The Departed captures the critical consensus around 2006's most decorated film. Nevertheless, the first round is only the beginning. Why 2006 Still Matters2006 represents a pivotal moment in 21st-century cinema. The year demonstrated that prestige filmmaking and mass entertainment could share a single calendar without one displacing the other. The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth both belong to 2006. Borat and Children of Men arrived the same year. That range matters because the best film years do not produce one kind of great film — they produce many kinds simultaneously. Moreover, 2006 produced titles that have only grown in cultural stature since their release. Idiocracy arrived with little fanfare and now functions as a widely cited cultural reference point. Children of Men drew modest theatrical audiences and currently ranks among the most admired films of the decade in retrospective criticism. The Prestige built a devoted following that continues to generate debate about its structure and its final image. Additionally, Casino Royale remains the gold standard for modern Bond films nearly two decades later. The movies of 2006 podcast gives these films a structured arena to compete. That structure reveals something a ranked list cannot: which films hold up under sustained comparison, which reputations survive direct opposition, and which consensus picks turn out to be more fragile than they appear. 2006 deserves this treatment. The Taste Buds are the right crew to find out which film earns the crown.Related Episodes from Movie of the YearMovie of the Year — Full Episode ArchiveThe Last Picture Show — Movie of the Year: 1971A Clockwork Orange — Movie of the Year: 1971More 2006 episode pages will be linked here as the season progresses.FAQ: Movies of 2006 Podcast and Film YearWhat is the movies of 2006 podcast intro episode about? Movie of the Year seeds 128 films from a given year into a tournament-style bracket. Films compete head-to-head across multiple rounds — from 128 to 64, then 32, the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four, and championship — until one film earns the title of best of the year. The format produces arguments that a simple ranked list cannot, because every vote has immediate consequences. What films are in the 2006 Movie of the Year bracket? Bart Mixon was Born in Houston, Texas, Mixon began his special make-up effects career working on local independent productions, including the 1984 thriller Courage, starring, co-written and produced by Ronny Cox. He eventually became a make-up lab technician and on-set makeup artist on more high profile productions, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), The Supernaturals (1986) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). Perhaps more notably, he worked on The Terminator (1984) and was part of the "Robot Team" on RoboCop (1987). In 1987, Mixon moved to Los Angeles, California, where he supervised special make-up and creature effects for such projects as Fright Night Part 2 (1988), Pet Sematary (1989), Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), Predator 2 (1990) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1992). He was also the creature effects supervisor on Stephen King's It (1990); as such, he was responsible for designing, sculpting and applying the make-up for the Pennywise character.  After working on the Klownzilla hands on Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Bart worked with the Chiodo Bros. once again as the Shop Foreman during the production of Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) where he supervised the creation of the trolls! He returned to do makeup FX work on Pet Sematary Two (1992). In 1994, Mixon entered into a partnership with fellow Star Trek make-up artist Earl Ellis to create the make-up effects studio Mixon & Ellis FX (or ME FX). Over the next four years, the studio created make-up and prosthetics for such films as Fargo (1996), Men in Black (1997) and Rushmore (1998). Mixon closed down the studio in 1998 and has since worked as a freelance artist on films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Planet of the Apes (2001), Men in Black II (2002), The Ring (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Collateral (2004).  Mixon also was the prosthetic make-up artist for The Thing on Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). He was also a key prosthetic artist on X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and was a make-up artist on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). The filmmaker John Carpenter has a whole shelf of cult classics: “They Live,” “The Thing,” “Escape from New York,” “Halloween,” and so many more. And while he hasn't directed a new movie in more than a decade, Carpenter has continued working in the film industry, composing scores for other directors (Bong Joon Ho recently approached him about a horror movie). He has also released albums of cinematic music—no film required—often working with his son, Cody Carpenter, and the musician Daniel Davies, his godson. The New Yorker Radio Hour producer Adam Howard talks with Carpenter ahead of the launch of his new small tour, just in time for Halloween, and they discuss the unusual shift he made from directing to composing. “It's a transition from pain to joy. Directing movies is very, very stressful,” Carpenter explains. “Playing music in front of a live audience—it's joy. It's just joy.” Carpenter suggests three inspirational scores from film history: Bebe and Louis Barron's electronic music for “Forbidden Planet”; Bernard Herrmann work on Hitchcock's “Vertigo”; and Hans Zimmer's music for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.”

Tara Erickson and Aaron Alexander set sail for a swashbuckling adventure in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the blockbuster sequel to Disney's Curse of the Black Pearl, directed by Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd) returns in his iconic, Oscar-nominated role as Captain Jack Sparrow, who finds himself indebted to the dreaded Davy Jones—captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman—and must retrieve the legendary Dead Man's Chest to save his soul. Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings, Kingdom of Heaven) reprises his role as Will Turner, who joins Jack on his quest while dealing with family revelations, including the fate of his father Bootstrap Bill, played by Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl, Dune). Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) returns as Elizabeth Swann, now entangled in political intrigue and pirate peril. Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Underworld) delivers a chilling performance as Davy Jones, brought to life through groundbreaking motion-capture and visual effects. Naomie Harris (Moonlight, No Time to Die) appears as Tia Dalma, the mysterious sea witch with a deep connection to Jones. From the thrilling Kraken attacks and Jack's iconic escape from the cannibal tribe, to the three-way sword fight on the giant spinning waterwheel, this film is packed with some of the franchise's most famous and highly searched action sequences. The visual effects and Hans Zimmer's sweeping score helped Dead Man's Chest become one of the highest-grossing films of all time and a fan favorite within the series. We're off on another pirate adventure this week when we eat crab, coconut water, melon, pineapple, and apple before discussing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). The addition of Elizabeth thirsting for Jack's pirate booty is out of character for a person who just had her wedding to Will Turner ruined. There may be too much silly sword-fighting in the film, but Bootstrap Bill and Davy Jones make this continuing story better. Now we're off to go save Jack with help from a demon monkey and an old “friend?”

This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records. Other works discussed on this episode include Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man: Far From Home, San Andreas, Lost, Super 8, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrested Development, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Early Edition, Phantom Thread, Saltburn and Love, Actually..., among others. We'll be back next week to kick off a new theme month as we put SepTIMEber in the past and move on to four weeks of frights, as Spooktober begins with a meeting of the minds from George A. Romero and Stephen King: 1982's Creepshow, which is currently streaming north of the border on Hollywood Suite. The rest of the Spooktober schedule includes 1408, The Birds, and our October canon consideration The Thing! It's gonna be a great month, so come on back, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

EPISODE 181: In this episode, Jason is joined by Old Man Brad himself, to throw some well-aimed shade (and praise) at the Top 5 highest-grossing films of 2006. Were these hits box office juggernauts or bloated cash grabs? Spoiler: it's a little of both. Movies Covered: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest – Johnny Depp and his mascara return for a bloated, kraken-filled adventure. Did we really need a 2-hour CGI tentacle fight? Apparently, yes—because $1 billion. The Da Vinci Code – Tom Hanks solves riddles while giving us a history lesson that no one asked for. Conspiracy theories and bad wigs galore—who knew history could be so... snooze-worthy? Ice Age: The Meltdown – That one with the acorn-obsessed squirrel. Climate change? Check. Endless slapstick? Check. A movie we definitely only went to because the kids begged? Check. Casino Royale – Daniel Craig tries to prove he's not just another Bond. Casino games, explosions, and parkour—basically, it's the gritty reboot that reminded us James Bond doesn't have to be a cartoon character. A Night at the Museum – Where Ben Stiller plays an underqualified security guard and we're all supposed to believe that museum exhibits come to life at night. An enjoyable fever dream or a franchise that outstayed its welcome?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 American fantasy swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), it is the second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Set one year after the events of The Curse of the Black Pearl, the film recounts Captain Jack Sparrow owing a debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the ghastly captain of the Flying Dutchman, and being marked for death and pursued by the Kraken. Meanwhile, the wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is interrupted by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), who wants Turner to acquire Jack's magic compass in a bid to find the Dead Man's Chest.. The next sequel we are discussing is "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and for it, I chatted with Actor Lee Arenberg who plays "Pintel" in the franchise. Lee and I discussed Lee's early career, including his start in acting and his experiences in improv. We discussed his buddy Tim Robbins and the theater group they formed that had names like John Cusack involved. We also talked about Seinfeld, favorite roles over the years, auditioning for SNL, having an action figure, Star Trek fandom, and more. Great chat.
