In their chat, Mark and Tony talk about: How Tony is a multi-faceted nerd who used to tape episodes of SCTV so he could play them back and memorize them Being big into Monty Python and, of course, Rush Always thinking that he was going to be an actor and his love of Shakespeare, but always getting the comedic parts Being a good actor but not being so good at auditioning because he freezes when put in a pressure situation Founding a comedy sketch troop called Obscene But Not Heard which was partially inspired by his love for Kids In The Hall Evolving into doing stand-up despite being a shy person Deciding to leave stand-up comedy around the time that Covid hit The movie XROXY (a modern tale based on Cyrano de Bergerac) that Tony wrote after he pitched it to some producers he had done some other work for Having a strength for dialogue but a weakness when it comes to plot Being brought in to help punch up an episodic YouTube series that was a campy horror flick and make it funnier (TRUCKSTOP BLOODSUCKERS) Tony's most recent script entitled SAVING MR. CHRISTMAS and how it evolved into a completely different movie than the one that he originally pitched The "we love this, change everything" thing that happens with movies Tony's WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT which is a show about two women waiting for a production of the play Waiting For Godot which never happens, and how that play was inspired by the way that days could blur together for people, particularly as we get older and "become that guy" Being a Rush fan since he first heard "Spirit of Radio" How Tony was inspired to create a fake Alex Lifeson account on Facebook after he's seen a fake Geddy Lee account The relation between ADHD and being "all in" on something -- like Rush, Monty Python and Rush for Tony How, during Covid Tony did a one-man reading of Monty Python and the Holy Grail Doing a Canadian overdub of Dragonball Z Adapting a pilot from a Canadian novel called The Smeltdog Man by Frank Macdonald and leveraging the "Deadpool" style of breaking the fourth wall Advice that Tony would give to the young nerdy Mark and Tony How Tony used to write sketches even though he didn't have an outlet for them The Dungeons & Dragons podcast that Tony is a part of called The +2 Rodcast And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on a few things that came up in the discussion. On episode 258 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello talk about the Gotham Awards nominations, the world premieres of AFI FEST 2024 and two films we saw outside of the festival that will be in the Oscar race. Always considered the kickoff of awards season, the Gotham Awards nominations were revealed this week and without too much surprise Sean Baker's Anora led with four nods: Best Feature, Best Director, Outstanding Lead Performance (Mikey Madison) and Outstanding Supporting Performance (Yura Borisnov). Next up with three apiece were RaMell Ross's Nickel Boys (Best Feature, Best Director, Breakthrough Performer – Brandon Wilson) and Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow (Best Director, Outstanding Lead Performance – Justice Smith, Outstanding Supporting Performance – Brigette Lundy-Paine). We break down these nominations, the surprises (Challengers in Best Feature as its only nod, The Brutalist missing there) and snubs (notably, Joan Chen) and everything in between. See full list of nominations here. Then we head over to the AFI FEST 2024, which just ended last weekend, to talk about the world premieres of the fest: Music by John Williams (review), Robert Zemeckis's Here (review), Clint Eastwood's Juror #2 (review) and the new Aardman Animation film Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. It's a pretty spirited conversation as the film from two directing giants are among our least favorite films of the year, but then buoyed by the joy and fun of the new Aardman. Conversely, we venture into two films that we loved and saw outside of the festival last week, Halina Reijn's Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, and Ridley Scott's return to the Colosseum with Gladiator II, starring Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 58m. We will be back next week for a retrospective of the 87th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2014. Till then, let's get into it.
Steve and Paul sit down with Cinder Chou (Writer/Director) and Kerry Lacy (actor) about their feature film Artist Unknown.Cinder Chou is a Taiwanese American writer, director, and producer originally from the oft-maligned state of New Jersey and currently resides in Brooklyn. An early love for comic books turned into a passion for visual storytelling. Her work explores themes of otherness through a comedic and surreal style. Cinder's early career as a production coordinator (The Big Sick, Jack Ryan, Red Oaks) gave her the professional know-how to launch her own films. Her work has screened at many festivals in the U.S. Artist Unknown is her debut feature film and has won numerous awards, including the Jury Award at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, Best Feature at the Broad Humor Film Festival, and Best Narrative Feature at the Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image. Kerry Lacy was raised in Malibu, California, by two professional actors and fell in love with acting at a young age. Her childhood was spent in theaters and television studios, and dinner table conversations included lessons on comedic timing and notes on dialects and accents. Kerry studied Tang Soo Do for twelve years, earning her third-degree black belt and working as an instructor before moving to New York City, where she studied acting at NYU's Tisch. She is a graduate of The New School, where she studied film, fine arts, and Spanish. In addition to acting, she is also an artist and DJ based in New York City. It's Women's History Month, and we're celebrating women filmmakers with a special treat. Our guest, Allison Lobel brings Diane Foster and Kelly Grant to the show. We talk about mobile filmmaking and the making of their new franchise feature horror comedy “Easter Bloody Easter,” a new film by WallyBird Productions, which was not shot with a phone, distributed by Gravitas. We had an inspiring discussion on how mobile filmmakers can create a franchise with a mobile film. Allison Lobel was the protagonist in “Paralysis,” by Levi Austin Morris. It won Best Feature last year at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego. “Easter Bloody Easter” is Diane Foster's directorial debut, which stars Allison, Diane and Kelly. Hollywood's newest leading lady, animal activist, producer and actress Chantelle Albers (The 6th Friend), stars opposite Cam Gigandet (Twilight) and Hannah James (Starz's "Outlander") in the Lionsgate western film TWO SINNERS AND A MULE. A triangle love story centered around two female prostitutes. In the film TWO SINNERS AND A MULE directed by rodeo champ turned filmmaker Raliegh Wilson, free-spirited Alice (Chantelle Albers) and Nora (Hannah James) set out for Virginia City to pursue their dream of opening a restaurant after being kicked out of a small Western town for sinful behavior. Out on the prairie, they come across an injured bounty hunter named Elden (Cam Gigandet, Twilight). Hoping to share in the reward, they nurse Elden back to health and help him stalk his prey, Grimes (Cord Newman). But as Nora and Alice both develop feelings for Elden, no one notices that Grimes is now on their tail, and the hunters become the hunted. Chantelle produced and starred in the popular female horror film, The 6th Friend, streaming on Amazon, Tubi, and Movie Central. The film had a theatrical release with Cinemark Theatre, and also went on to win numerous Best Feature, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress awards. If you like what you hear, and/or would like to give us feedback on how we're doing, follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast / senornerdpodcast @senornerdpod on Twitter Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist science-fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo and Jonathan Wang; the film incorporates elements from a number of genres and film mediums, including surreal comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, immigrant narrative, and animation. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and James Hong in supporting roles. Kwan and Scheinert began work on the project in 2010. Production was announced in 2018, and principal photography ran from January to March 2020. The filmmakers initially sought Jackie Chan for the lead role before the script was revised to feature a female protagonist as part of a wife-husband duo. The works of Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, as well as the children's book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the video game Everything, served as inspiration for several scenes. The soundtrack features compositions by Son Lux, including collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, André 3000, John Hampson, and Randy Newman. The film explores philosophical themes such as existentialism, nihilism, surrealism, and absurdism, as well as themes such as neurodivergence, depr2ession, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release by A24 on April 8. The film grossed over $141 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film. PUBLIC VERSION. Director Travis Greene and writer Jonathan Buchanan (8 FOUND DEAD- currently available to rent or purchase digitally) join Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss the making of their award winning new feature. From the writing of 8 FOUND DEAD's non-linear story and pushing back on the note to “unfold it” and tell the story in a more traditional order of events… to Travis risking it all by selling his house to finance the production and then finding himself renting a place that just so happened to be the perfect location to shoot the film… to the import role that Priscilla's Gourmet Coffee Shop and their legendary Raspberry Mocha played in helping the film come to life… to blocking and staging a story in four separate but converging timelines… to how Jonathan's years as a prop master and Travis' years as an editor prepared them for producing their very own feature without getting caught up in the usual first-time producer pitfalls… to knowing when and when not to listen to test audiences' opinions of early cuts even when they are filled with trusted friends… to going on to win “Best Feature” and “Best Director” at the 2022 ScreamFest in Los Angeles… we hope that this incredibly inspiring conversation helps push you to stop waiting for someone else's permission and start making your dream a reality! Remember, ”if not now WHEN?” Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener who is about to move to the United States and who is looking for some tips about attending her very first horror convention, Adam has some advice for grumpy convention celebrities, and the boys joke about what a big success YORKIETHON 8 will be… several weeks before finding out just how successful it actually was! But more on that next week in our special Christmas episode!
