TVC 678.2: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with Laurence Luckinbill (The Boys in the Band, The Delphi Bureau, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Lyndon, Hemingway, Teddy Tonight!, Clarence Darrow Tonight!). Topics this segment include how Larry's guest appearance on Harry O in the summer of 1974 resulted in Larry adopting an Alaskan Malumute, whom Larry named Mush (and who remained a beloved part of the Luckinbill family for the next thirteen years), and how William Shatner cast Larry as Sybok in Star Trek V after seeing his one-man show Lyndon on PBS. Larry's autobiography, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life, is available wherever books are sold through Sunbury Press.
TVC 677.5: Ed welcomes actor, author, playwright, and Emmy Award-winning producer Laurence Luckinbill (The Boys in the Band, The Delphi Bureau, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Lyndon, Hemingway, Teddy Tonight!, Clarence Darrow Tonight!). Larry's autobiography, Affective Memories: How Chance and The Theater Saved My Life, is a page-turning, brutally honest story of how Larry overcame a meager upbringing up in the Ozark Mountains to forge his way into a successful career as a working actor and playwright. While it includes a lot of great showbiz stories from Larry's career on stage, film, and television, Affective Memories is really a book that transcends genres, evoking many classic American themes (one of which is finding redemption and a second lease on life through the love of a good woman), while also providing insight into what it means to be an actor, the healing power of the performing arts, and the lifetime discovery of what it means to be human. Among other topics this segment, Larry shares the story of how he came to write Teddy Tonight, his one-man show about the life of President Theodore Roosevelt, to illustrate how to find the “motor” that drives the particular story one wants to tell, be that as a play, a memoir, or a long-form work of fiction.
For 35 years Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) has held the dubious distinction of being the worst Star Trek film ever made, but that inauspicious run is over. With the release of the Paramount+ film Star Trek: Section 31 there's a new benchmark for bad in the Trek universe. To spare you one hour and 35 minutes of weak, nonsensical plot, thin characters, and cheesy gimmicks, the Regular Joe's watched Section 31 for you. Note: there will be SPOILERS, but think of it as a “mercy spoiling.” From the far future we move to recent past as the long awaited MCU version of Fantastic Four releases its first teaser/trailer serving up a mid-century-modern take on Marvel's first family of adventurers. Cautious optimism appears in order. There's also the usual Random Topics and a round of What's in The Box. Thanks for Listening!

Star Trek Video Games: An Unofficial Guide to the Final Frontier with author Mat Bradley-Tschirgi. There are a LOT of Star Trek video games and Mat had some hard decisions and set boundaries on what games to cover in his book (by the way, a “notable” game doesn't necessarily mean a good game). What is Mat's favorite and least favorite Star Trek game? Star Trek has one of the saddest stories of vaporware in PC gaming. Mat had an unusual entry into Star Trek fandom, but it still grabbed him. What are Shane and Mat's thoughts on some of the more recent Star Trek TV shows? What is one redeeming aspect of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier? Podcasting takes a lot of work and time. This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records. Other works discussed on this episode include Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man: Far From Home, San Andreas, Lost, Super 8, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrested Development, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Early Edition, Phantom Thread, Saltburn and Love, Actually..., among others. We'll be back next week to kick off a new theme month as we put SepTIMEber in the past and move on to four weeks of frights, as Spooktober begins with a meeting of the minds from George A. Romero and Stephen King: 1982's Creepshow, which is currently streaming north of the border on Hollywood Suite. The rest of the Spooktober schedule includes 1408, The Birds, and our October canon consideration The Thing! It's gonna be a great month, so come on back, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Laurence Luckinbill's career on stage and screen was filled with high-risk choices that often led to great reward. One of those decisions just happens to be Star Trek related.Trek fans know Mr. Luckinbill as Sybok from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," where he donned the pointy ears to play Spock's brother. We learn about how he got the role, his thoughts on who the character is and why he is a more complicated villain than you might believe, working with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, and why the much-maligned fifth movie is better than you remember. We also learn about growing up in Arkansas and how he found the theater, lessons from George Kernodle and Uta Hagen, insight into his "Great Americans" one-man play series, and a deep dive into his multi-year role in the milestone play and film, "The Boys in The Band," a breakout show for LGBTQ culture during a pivotal time in gay rights, of which he is the last surviving cast member. This might be one of the most in-depth interviews with this legendary performer on YouTube, so get ready for a deep dive into this actor who has long earned his time in the spotlight. Laurence Luckinbill's career on stage and screen was filled with high-risk choices that often led to great reward. Celebrating 35 years of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. After the major box office success of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the next film was inevitable. In this episode, Part III of Twin Cities Trekkies Star Trek Film Extravaganza, host Wes Huntington is joined by fellow Star Trek fan Greg (known as Captain Kirk and Cocktails on Instagram) to discuss the film, certain aspects of it, and their Star Trek stories. Not content with the leading role in every Star Trek thing ever, William Shatner takes a seat in both the captain's and the director's chair for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. So how will Shatner's Trek directorial debut compare to what's come before? If you guessed 'More unicorns, Uhura takes her clothes off, and Spock shoots God in the face?' - my word you're good, which is more than we can say for the actual movie. OR IS IT? Perhaps watching The Final Frontier as the next step on our Trek trek lends it enough context as to soften our hearts. Is Rob a Star Trek fan yet? Row, row, row your starship. Jay and Nate review Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Inspired by a late-night viewing of televangelists and wanting to boldly go in a different direction, William Shatner's concept for the fifth Star Trek movie was ambitious - too ambitious for the studio and faced budget cuts, outsourced effects, and a general sense of apathy from those involved. However, the cast all talk about what a good time they had making this entry. So is it worthy of re-evaluation after missing audiences in release? Or is this a frontier best left unexplored. In this episode of The LIUniverse, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe, an astronomer and professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, who studies galactic evolution, including galactic collisions and the growth of black holes, to explore final frontiers, both real and fictional. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the first data drop from COSMOS-Web, a database of the deepest, coolest, largest field of deep space ever imaged by JWST, and the largest scientific project yet to be conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope. Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe was co-leader of the effort and an integral part of the COSMOS team, which started with 50 people and has grown since then, and which started working on this project long before the JWST launched. Jeyhan also talks about the Redshift Wrangler project, a citizen science project that's part of the COSMOS-Web and that anyone can contribute to. We jump into our first student question, from Jonathan, who asks, “Why is there a black hole in the center of our galaxy, and how many galaxies are there in the universe?” Dr. Kartaltepe explains that we think there's a supermassive black hole in the center of every galaxy, but where they come from is still a mystery. We understand where “regular” black holes come from, but these are still “head scratchers.” And as to how many galaxies there are, the current estimate is in the trillions, and that doesn't even count the ones that are too far away even to see. Next, Chuck takes the opportunity to ask Jeyhan about whether or not there really is a galactic barrier like the one shown in Star Trek V – The Final Frontier. And while we don't actually know where our galaxy ends, Dr. Kartaltepe explains that there is no hard barrier around it. Jeyhan shares how as a child she watched Star Trek: The Original Series with her father, and has watched all of the subsequent series since, and that it helped shape her love of science and her social experience. And get this – Chuck shares that his wife is an even bigger Star Trek geek than he is, and his love of Trek helped him win her over! Jeyhan, like Chuck, is on Team Star Trek vs. Team Star Wars, and the pair discuss what they like and don't like about each, ending up in a three-way discussion with Allen about the morality of different races in Star Trek, and the similarities and differences between the Borg Collective and our concerns about Artificial Intelligence. Oh, and which Captain of the Enterprise does Jeyhan think is the best? You'll have to watch/listen to the episode to find out. Then it's time for another student question, from Cynthia: “In a way, the brain has a bunch of similarities to the universe. Is there a connection between the two, logically or illogically?” According to Jeyhan, one of the biggest similarities is how little we know about each. Philosophical pondering about understanding complexity ensues. Chuck has his own question for Jeyhan: How often do galaxies interact with each other? She says it's fairly common: our Milky Way galaxy is already interacting with the small galaxies next to us, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, and has interacted with other small galaxies in the past. And, as we all know, there's a collision with Andromeda galaxy heading our way in billions of years, and Dr. Kartaltepe describes what might happen when it does. Finally, we turn to the impending Great North American Eclipse, a total solar eclipse that will be passing directly over Rochester on April 8, 2024. If you'd like to know more about Dr. Kartaltepe's work, you can follower her on Twitter/X at @jeyhan, or follow COSMOS-Web at @cosmosastro. You can also find out more on the web at https://cosmos.astro.caltech.edu/. You can find out more about the Redshift Wrangler citizen science project here on Zooniverse.org: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/jeyhansk/redshift-wrangler.
