Tom Hollander is in my top five actors of all time. A rare beast who can do comedy and drama with equal, effortless brilliance. He lands a line so dry you need a glass of water just to recover—then, in the next breath, breaks your heart with those devastatingly eloquent eyes. And now, thanks to The White Lotus, he has also proved himself outstanding at dying. A Napoleon of the screen—compact but commanding, wielding presence like an emperor wields an army—he strode through Season 2, a vision of louche menace and debauched charm, before being so cruelly dispatched that I half-expected him to rise from the waves like some Mediterranean revenant, clutching an aperitivo and a bon mot. But no. Gone. Finished. Season 3 will have to stagger on without him, and be the lesser for it.So, in pre-mourning his absence, I give you two small consolations: a video in which he bemoans sharing a name with a very rich man, and possibly the greatest Life in the Day feature ever published. Read it. Read it twice. Then go and watch Rev. again, because honestly, nobody does it better. This appeared in The Sunday Times - Sunday, October 04 2020,I wake up generally at 3 or 4am. Not because I'm like Margaret Thatcher, but because I need to pee. I pee in the darkness using my phone screen to illuminate the target, then often take half a sleeping pill (antihistamine), turn on the World Service very quietly and try to go to sleep again. Sometime between 6 and 8 I wake again, turn up the Today programme gently. If my girlfriend is there we hold each other in different positions. If she isn't I wrap my arms around a pillow and continue listening to the bad news. Whoever gets up first will go downstairs and start baking porridge. It's like a savoury flapjack and was recommended to me by a very healthy-looking nutritionist. It takes about 40 minutes to cook and we eat it in such large quantities with olive oil and salt that we negate any nutritional benefits. But we enjoy it. And while it's cooking it gives us time to look at our phones.Sometimes in this waiting period I try to do three slow sun salutations to stretch myself out, but often I don't. I brew the first of many coffees. Which mostly involves heating up the stuff in the cafetière left over from the day before. If it's a slow day I make it in one of those Italian alloy things that students always used to have that involve a lot of assembled parts and washing up. Owing to forces beyond my control, life has not been as busy as it used to be.After we've eaten and my girlfriend has gone to work I look at myself in the mirror and try to see what others see. Examine my bald patch, weigh myself and pull my stomach in. Then let it out. Then pull it in again. If I'm feeling positive I might get dressed at this point and go for my second coffee on the street below. I've lived in the same flat for 20 years and one of the rewards for this loyalty is that I know all the shopkeepers and stallholders on the street, for whom I have become like a piece of the old furniture they sell.Hello Glen, hello Kris, Ghino!, hello Brendan, hello Fati, wave at Ray, turn the corner, bonjour Raschid, ça va? (keep going 'cause I can't really speak French), hello Hassan, hello Reg, morning Dave, yup still here Tony, hello Beatrice (she doesn't notice), slide into Porto: “Maya four-ter take away please” (phonetic Portuguese). Then take it home and leave it on the sideboard with any post that has arrived from my stalker. Then I might call my agent. “Isn't she? No, no, nothing important… just checking in…”Soon it's time for my midmorning nap. Followed by the preparation of lunch, which I start at 12.15pm. And at 1pm I turn on the radio again to listen to World at One and hear politicians lying or reports of the world ending.Whatever I make for lunch I eat too much of, which makes me feel a bit lethargic, so I make some more coffee and turn off the radio as The Archers starts so I'm ready to begin the second half of the day.The afternoon is time for hobbies and extracurricular activities. If it's sunny I might go for a cycle ride down the canal, if it's raining I might masturbate and doze, or speculate on the extraordinary injustice of Philip Green's knighthood, or look at that app that tells you which celebrity you most resemble (Tom Hardy). Sometimes I read long-form articles about the collapse of western society and the destruction of the planet. From about 5pm, assuming I haven't mislaid my house keys or mobile phone, it's possible to surf through the rest of the day on the news feed while preparing food, eating it and digesting through Newsnight. Then it's time to go to sleep again. Cracking a little sleeping pill in half in case I need it later, I turn on the radio very quietly. If my girlfriend's there we hold each other in various shapes. If she's not I put my arms around a pillow. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit mrzwar.substack.com
Book Vs. Movie: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the HorseThe Charlie Mackesy Children's Book Vs. the 2022 Apple+ FilmThe Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy is a beautifully illustrated book that explores themes of kindness, resilience, and self-acceptance through the adventures of four unlikely friends. Each character offers unique insights: the curious Boy, the cake-loving Mole, the cautious Fox, and the wise Horse. Through gentle dialogue and expressive artwork, the story reflects on friendship, hope, and the journey to find peace within oneself. Often compared to "The Little Prince," this book has resonated with readers of all ages and was adapted into an award-winning animated film in 2022 that was created remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. So, which did the Margos prefer? Listen to find out! This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records. Other works discussed on this episode include Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man: Far From Home, San Andreas, Lost, Super 8, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Arrested Development, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Early Edition, Phantom Thread, Saltburn and Love, Actually..., among others. We'll be back next week to kick off a new theme month as we put SepTIMEber in the past and move on to four weeks of frights, as Spooktober begins with a meeting of the minds from George A. Romero and Stephen King: 1982's Creepshow, which is currently streaming north of the border on Hollywood Suite. The rest of the Spooktober schedule includes 1408, The Birds, and our October canon consideration The Thing! It's gonna be a great month, so come on back, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Pride AND PREJUDICE? It's more likely than you think. On this installment of “TGMEM probably would have never covered this movie unless someone suggested it,” the Podmaster herself decides to subjugate the boys to this panties-soaking horny adaptation of Jane Austen's classic. Flex your hand as you long for the touch of your partner's hand, practice those dance moves, and get ready to trudge through the British moors to unite with your soulmate this week on the Greatest Movie Ever Made! Now with 100% more discourse about pig testicles! Pride & Prejudice (2005) is directed by Joe Wright and stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Brenda Blethyn, Donald Sutherland, and Tom Hollander. The veteran British character actor reflects on starting his screen career at just 14, juggling art house projects (e.g. 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'In the Loop') with big-studio franchise films (e.g. 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Mission: Impossible' installments) and, in just the last two years, finding himself in the center of the zeitgeist as a central part of both season two of 'The White Lotus' and, most recently, FX's limited series about writer Truman Capote and the society ladies in his life. The BBC has discovered that the body count was nearly 25% higher than in the first year of the war. This overall death toll is eight times higher than the only official public acknowledgement of fatality numbers ever given by Moscow in September 2022.Also on the programme: the military regime in Myanmar has moved the jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest; we ask why has Dubai suffered a years worth of rain in just a few hours? And we'll hear from actor Tom Hollander on what it's like to play the American writer Truman Capote. (Picture: Mass grave for Russian soldiers near Mariupol. Credit: Reuters)
Imagine going to a close friend's birthday, months after the death of your son. Imagine realising it was too soon and telling the man you're talking to who you hardly know, why you need to leave. He takes your arm and insists on seeing you to the lift. Then he goes down with you until you get to the street. This becomes a ten minute walk to the car park. A climb up the stairs, him holding your hand tightly until you find your car. Driving off, you see him in the rearview mirror waving goodbye. I was this woman, and Tom Hollander was this man. And his act of tenderness and compassion has stayed with me for 13 years. There are many stories about Tom Hollander. The best ones are told by him, not least his life in the day for the Sunday Times, the best in a great series ever written. He is a fantastic actor; White Lotus, Patriots, most recently captivating audiences as Truman Capote in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. He sings beautiful songs to his six month old son. He's passionate about what he cooks and what he eats. Yesterday, he sent me a photograph with no caption of Fran Hickman with a large stainless steel saucepan obscuring her face, drinking the contents.Imagine, being me in The River Cafe with Tom Hollander on a Tuesday afternoon, talking about memories of food, memories of friendship, family and all his doing. Then imagine how special this feels.Listen to Ruthie's Table 4: Tom Hollander made in partnership with Moncler.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Matt and Dawn are joined by Mo Walker to review 4 new shows. This week's lineup looks like this. The second installment of Ryan Murphy's anthology series Feud arrives on Disney+ starring Tom Hollander as Truman Captoe. Michael Douglas stars as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV's surprisingly upbeat min series Franklin. Elsewhere, Netflix has tense stalking 'comedy' Baby Reindeer and Mike Bubbins stars in BBC Two's new comedy Mammoth. There's also discussion on Fallout on Prime Video, Doctor Who and Big Mood.

ReadThe Maidens by Alex Michaelides is An explosive combination of Greek Mythology, murder, history, and academia. I devoured this book. Also by Alex Michaelides The Fury and The Silent Patient. Read them all. The Women by Kristin Hannah. Set during the Vietnam War, The Women tells the story of an army nurse, her training, friendships, and—what I found fascinating—PTSD. It is wonderfully written. I loved it. The Oceans & the Stars by Mark Helprin. I love nearly everything Helprin writes, and The Oceans & the Stars doesn't disappoint. It is a magical love story with depth, charm, honor, and duty. Absolutely wonderful. Read it slowly and savor every word. Pre-ordered: Table for Two. Amor Towles. I'll let you know the second I finish. And, Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz. Can't wait! WatchI watched The New Look and The Feud, and they left me totally blah. Yes, the acting is superb, especially Tom Hollander as Truman Capote, and the settings are impeccable, but I didn't love either of them. The Durrells in Corfu. PBS Charming doesn't even come close to describing this series. I finally watched all the chapters. It's so English (in a good way). It just makes me feel good, sort of like… it is all good in the world. Home Fires PBS. There are only two seasons… so the stories are still hanging…. The third and final season was canceled as they started production… even so, it was well worth watching. Superb. The Dynasty, New England Patriots, Apple TV—now we are talking. Men in tight pants. Seriously. I don't know anything about football, but I loved to see the camaraderie, the aim to win, the ambition, and how they all supported each other. There is a lesson here. This week's show gets right into what's important in our culture. Host Neal Pollack welcomes Jennifer Lopez obsessive Adam Hirschfelder to the podcast, and he is all about 'This Is Me...Now,' J. Lo's music video and album that has recast J. Lo's image as someone who's both ironically and unironically finding herself. She has learned to love herself and Ben Affleck, and the video, airing on Amazon Prime, features her in therapy and also dancing on the set of Singin' In The Rain. Neal can't quite suss out what the big deal is about J. Lo, but Adam, who has some regional identification with the former Jenny from the Block, says her great subject is the nature of celebrity itself. We don't know if it's that calculated, but maybe it is.Ryan Murphy is back doing Ryan Murphy things in 'Feud: Capote Versus the Swans,' and Neal and Matthew Ehrlich break it down. Matthew's main criticism is that Capote had plenty of feuds in his life, but his feud with the swans was really more like an excommunication. They examine the various actors doing their various swan schticks, and while Matthew thinks that Tom Hollander does a pitch-perfect Capote impression, he finds this version of Truman quite creepy and not at all magnetic and compelling.Kingsley Ben-Adir's Bob Marley is the opposite of creepy. Adam Hirschfelder returns to the show to discuss Bob Marley: One Love, which he likens to the posters for Bob Marley's Legend greatest hits album that adorned the walls of many white people in college dorms in the 1980s and 1990s. The film, which Marley's estate made in full consultation with the director, is a continuation of Marley's hagiography. Adam wanted more explanation and information, Neal wanted either more or less religion, but audiences seem not to care, as the music is a huge hit, because Marley's music is eternal.Enjoy the podcast!

Feud: Capote Vs. the Swans is the latest reimagining of historical events produced by Ryan Murphy. The series follows famed author Truman Capote (played by Tom Hollander), who hobnobs with a close-knit circle of New York socialites known as the Swans. But then he embarrasses them by airing their dirty laundry — and things get nasty. The Swans are deliciously played by actors like Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, and Chloë Sevigny.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

There's been a flurry of casting news surrounding Marvel Studios movie Thunderbolts this week. Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry star Lewis Pullman has an offer to replace Steven Yuen as Sentry after Yuen exited the project due to scheduling issues. Additionally, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join the film replacing Ayo Edebiri, who is also departing the project due to her schedule. It is also said that audiences can expect to see Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishbourne in the project portraying their respective MCU characters Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. Our pal James Gunn didn't leave us hanging this week with his announcement that Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl. Alcock is best known for playing young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO's House of the Dragon, part of the Game of Thrones universe. The Last of Us has secured their directing talent for season two and it's chock-full of award winners. Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for his work on the final season of HBO's Succession; Kate Herron, who directed the first season of the Marvel Studios series Loki; Stephen Williams, nominated for an Emmy for directing on HBO's Watchmen; and Nina Lopez-Corrado, nominated for an Imagen award for directing on season two of HBO's Perry Mason. Will Mom and Dad ever stop fighting? And by Mom and Dad of course we mean…Marvel and Sony. The studio giants are reportedly unable to see eye-to-eye about the direction Tom Holland's Spider-Man should go in a fourth Spider-man film. Sony is understandably trying to boost their Sonyverse with a crossover event that would include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, but Marvel sees things differently. Marvel desires that Holland's Spider-Man continues with a more grounded approach that is intuitive to the character. Multiple Spider-Man appearances were scrapped from the upcoming Madame Web movie that Sony is putting out. Christopher Nolan's film Tenet will be rereleased in IMAX theaters from February 23 to March 1. The first trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been released. The film will debut on March 21. Tom Hollander, a British actor known for performances in Pride & Prejudice, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The White Lotus, and The Night Manager, spoke on a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers about a time he was mistakenly sent a box office bonus check meant for Tom Holland for his appearance in Avengers films. Hollander said "“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box-office bonus. Not the whole box-office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I'd ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.” A four-issue limited comic series called Darth Vader - Black White & Red will be on sale starting April 25. Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. After a year-long search for Trevor Noah's replacement on The Daily Show, former longtime host Jon Stewart has agreed to return to host the program. Stewart will appear weekly throughout the 2024 US Presidential election. While speaking to ComicBook.com about her Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness, Zoe Saldana said she would be willing to play more superhero roles as long as they didn't require the extensive makeup process used to create her MCU character of Gamora. "If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful." Later this year, Marvel Comics will apply their What If...? concept to the Alien franchise. A five-issue run will be released, following the character Carter Burke and what happened after.
