Every summer, thousands of American Jewish teenagers leave their homes to spend weeks making trouble and memories in what might be their favorite place in the world: summer camp. But Jewish camp isn't just fun, games and reenactments of Aliya Bet; it's a place for Jewish kids to learn about history, ritual and belonging, an opportunity for teens to understand themselves as part of the Jewish story. In this episode, host Yehuda Kurtzer is joined by Sandra Fox, Visiting Assistant Professor of Hebrew & Judaic Studies at NYU and author of The Jews of Summer: Summer Camp and Jewish Culture in Postwar America, for a conversation about summer camp and its role in the formation of American Jewish identity. In a conversation that ranges from Color War to hookup culture to Yiddish immersion, they explore the ways in which Jewish camping has always been, and continues to be, a site for the negotiation of the American Jewish community's hopes and anxieties about its future.

David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) joins us this week to share how he's paved his unique path in comedy for decades without sacrificing his style for commercial recognition. David takes us back to his early days at NYU bumping shoulders with guys like Ken Marino and Joe Lo Truglio, going on to form a group full of comedic household names in The State. We also talk about finding the brilliance in Paul Rudd's performance, issues shooting Wet Hot, and staying creative while preferring structure. Thank you to our sponsors:
Logging has seen a stark evolution since its origins. What started as a wildly dangerous and often deadly process done largely by hand is now a multibillion dollar industry fascilitated by manmade machines. Herein we meet our character, the Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) a ghost from the early days of American logging. In the first of a short series on logging, we hear the tragic tale of this scorned quintisential pine species and the lumber barons who ensured its demise.Completely Arbortrary is produced and hosted by Casey Clapp and Alex CrowsonJoin the Cone of the Month ClubSupport the show on PatreonFollow along on InstagramFind Arbortrary merch on our storeFind additional reading on our websiteCover art by Jillian BartholdMusic by Aves and The Mini-Vandals
Ken Marino knows that he's often called upon to play one of two archetypes. From his earliest days as a member of his NYU sketch group The State to his roles in films like ‘Wet Hot American Summer' and ‘Wanderlust' and TV shows like ‘Eastbound and Down' and ‘The Other Two,' he mostly swings between insecure buffoon and “straight-up asshole.” But no character better captures his particular comedic gifts than Ron Donald of ‘Party Down,' which returns this week for its long-awaited third season—13 years after it was canceled. In this episode, Marino talks about what it was like to reunite with Adam Scott, Jane Lynch and the rest of the ‘Party Down' crew and what fans can expect from the new batch of episodes. He also reflects on the biggest moments of his career, including almost losing out on his roles in ‘Party Down' and ‘Wet Hot' to Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell, respectively, the decision to take things into his own hands as a screenwriter with movies like ‘Role Models' and how he views his place in the comedy world after 30 years on screen. Spring is over, Summer is here, so get your ass inside in the air conditioning because we got a whole bunch of new anime this season. We had 12 new Summer titles drop in the last week with something like 20 more coming next week, so there is a lot to choose from. We've got a preliminary sorting going and are giving you first impressions of all 12 shows that premiered this past week. We've classified things as promising, undecided, or maybe next time, but you never know things could change by the power rankings. We've also got our nailed it statements from last season and a new round of buy it or deny it for the summer season. It's shaping up to be a good one, so if you want a head start of what you might want to watch this is a pretty good place to get it.

Boris introduces The Empire Never Ended to a very special Bavarian boy named Fritz Kuhn who, through summer camps, mass rallies, and marching (so much marching) throughout the '30s, tried to reconcile racial Americanism and German Nazism through his German-American Bund. Though his career was brief, Kuhn amassed tens of thousands of followers and inspired much of the symbolism and look of future groups. He also embodied the very model of the US Nazi huckster as he embezzled funds to supply his vast array of mistresses. Hitler may have hated him, but the legacy of 'zee Bund' lives on. This is The Empire Never Ended, the Antifascist Amerikanski-Balkan podcast about (neo) fascist terror, the (deep) state and the alienation, nihilism and desperation produced by the capitalist system. And how to get rid of all that. Something like that... Subscribe to our Patreon for weekly premium episodes!
