In this episode Eugene discusses the Big Game, how Chigs wasn’t feeling the bird love, and a call that he made to The West Virginia Surf Report podcast. Although he keeps forgetting to say it on the podcast… Thanks to Associate Producer Tim Beeman for getting these jokers out there. Lance finally explains why his stupid tenacity got him a license in Belgium and Dubai. Since Josh had to sit thru that, he decided only one Reddit! question this week. Seriously. Please send questions so Lance will shut the hell up.... Reddit! this week: should one avoid self pleasure before wisdom teeth extractions? Is it SAFE? Stay fresh!
This week we cover the earworm of the century, the one, the only, Surfin' Bird. Follow Marcus on Spotify to listen to all of the songs used in this episode Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0
Rick James [00:33] a side: "Super Freak (Part I)" b side: "Super Freak (Part II)" Gordy G 7205F 1981 What's better than "Super Freak", more "Super Freak" evidently. Made it all the way to number 16 on the Hot 100. And partially recorded at the Record Plant in good ol' Sausalito. The Trashmen [07:29] a side: "Surfin' Bird" b side: "King of the Surf" Garrett Records GA-4002 1963 From the surf epicenter of Minneapolis MN, The Trashmen answer the eternal question: What happens when you fuse The Rivingtons "Bird's the Word" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" together. Hit number 4 on the Hot 100 in 1961. Killer Dreamer [13:23] a side: "Survival Guns" b side: "Pterodactyl2" Kapow Records #14 2003 Early aughties punk from San Pedro, on lovely opaque white vinyl. Sharon Cash [17:39] a side: "Sweet Soul Singer (stereo)" b side: "Sweet Soul Singer (mono)" Playboy Records P 50026 1973 Mystery single from a mystery singer? Ohio Express [25:04] a side: "Sweeter Than Sugar" b side: "Bitter Lemon" Buddha Records BDA 92 1969 See Joe Tex. Who needs to record a b-side when you can just flip the tape around? Sadly only made it to number 96 on the charts. But then again, it's no "Yummy Yummy Yummy". The Normal [29:20] a side: "T.V.O.D." b side: "Warm Leatherette" Mute Records MUTE 001 1978 AKA Daniel Miller. A little Kraftwerk-esque, a little Silver Apples-esge, a lot JG Ballard-esque. Soft Cell [36:38] a side: "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?" b side: "Where Did Our Love Go?" Sire Records PRO-S-1028 1981 Well this is convenient. Back to back synthpop. You can hear the evolution from inception to peak synthpop. Plus, more effects from the reign of Northern Soul. Also, if you haven't listened to Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret recently, or ever, you should really take it for a spin. ABBA [45:03] a side: "Take a Chance on Me" b side: "I'm a Marionette" Atlantic Records 3457 1977 Yes indeed, one year prior to bleak commentary on contemporary life that is The Normal, this top notch chartbuster from ABBA that reached number 3 on the Hot 100. And that is a very epic flipside. Music behind the DJ: "My Bonnie Lies" by The Ventures.

SURFIN' BIRD BLUBOH-HO-HO-ALGH-BABGR-LLAB-BBPB-BLABGH! Theme song by French Goodbye @ramonespodcast
How do you get along with your siblings? Have they ever backed you in to a corner? In this episode I am actually interviewed by...my sister. Which is quite fitting since she makes me happy. She asks some pretty good questions. Some surprised me, some made me a little uncomfortable and some even made me cry. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, isn't that what sisters and brothers always do? The songs we use in this episode are "Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen and "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante. We don't own the rights to either. www.HappyLife.lol www.Facebook.com/HappyLifeStudios www.Instagram.com/HappyLife_Studios www.Twitter.com/HappyLifStudios www.PayPal.me/StevoHays
Four friends. A divisive MST3K episode. Will their relationships remain intact? Will MiMi ever speak to any of them again? Probably. We just wanted to interject some actual drama into The Crawling Hand.Host Segments: Joe bones the intro; Devori ponders things; Kimbro Clothing Wish-List; In case you cared -- a history of space-suit films; beating a dead riff; weird ways to hate teens; what happens when a body rejects "Surfin' Bird"; the "Uncle Jimmy's" jokes write themselves; too soon?; Devori breaks MiMi -- FINALLY.
This brew collaboration was literally bottled the DAY of this recording (11/03/17). A DIPA so crushable, "you'll be drunk in no time!"
Few styles of rock music are as evocative of a particular time and place than surf music. As soon as the opening guitar or drum riff to a surf classic, you are instantly transported back to a time when it was all about catching some waves and soaking up the sun. Or, you are currently at Island's taking advantage of their 2-for-1 Kona Longboard Happy Hour specials. There are no better people to give their opinions on the most iconic surf songs than three guys whose experiences with surfing are limited to watching "Point Break." There's a decent chance we missed something that should be on the Mt. Rushmore of Surf Songs - let us know what it is. This week: Avian flu update, Salvation Army holiday giving, Black Friday tips and trends and a new book about MN 60s bands and the Surfin' Bird.
DJ 86 and I decided to trade 3rd and 4th Thursdays this month. While it is not required by 86 or the station in anyway, I like to treat fill-in shows as a chance to cater to a different programming audience; doing a show that isn't exactly like The Cone of Noize but should hopefully find a way to appeal to its regular audience. Even though my show is "freeform" sometimes it's nice to take a break from the restrictions inherent in that form. Basically, in a world of absolute freedom, genre-rigidity is liberation!
