Sylvester Stewart was born in Dallas, Texas, but moved to the Bay area of California before becoming a multi-instrumentalist and changing his name to Sly Stone - the primary driver of the group Sly and the Family Stone. This was one of the first integrated groups, and one that crossed many genres. They played what would become known as psychedelic soul, but you can trace the origins of funk, soul, and psychedelic music through Sly and the Family Stone. The first Family Stone album was called “A Whole New Thing,” and it caught good critical coverage. Unfortunately it was a commercial failure. Clive Davis asked for a more pop friendly sound, and Sly Stone created an approach to their second album, Dance to the Music, which followed a formula. Each lead singer would take turns on lead vocals or sing together in unison, the songs would feature a prominent solo for the instrumentalists, and the lyrics would appeal to a wide audience even though they would still focus on peace, love, and opposition to racism. The group really did not care for the formulaic approach of this album, but it worked when it came to commercial appeal. “Dance to the Music” became a top 10 pop hit, and it inspired several groups to gravitate towards psychedelic soul, including the Temptations, the Impressions, and the Four Tops.Sly Stone is the primary driver of the group, writing almost all of their songs, serving as a multi-instrumentalist, and as a primary vocalist. His borhter Freddie Stone is on vocals and guitar, and his sister Rose Stone joins the group for the first time on this album. Other members are Larry Graham on vocals and bass, Cynthia Robinson on trumpet and vocals, Jerri Martini on saxophone, Greg Errico on drums, and backing vocals by Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, and Elva Mouton).Sly and the Family Stone would release a number of songs to hit the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the years to come. The follow-up album to this one is called "Stand!," and is considered the band's high water mark, along with their performance in 1969 at Woodstock. The band would encounter instability and drug problems as time went on, with the original group dissolving in 1975. Sly Stone would continue to record as "Sly and the Family Stone" for many years afterwards using rotating musicians, until drug problems basically forced him to retire by 1987.Bruce brings the early funk for this week's podcast. Are You ReadyThis song is an expression of opposition to racism with lyrics like "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, of you get bit, just hate the bite. Make sure you heart is beatin' right."Ride the RhythmThis song starts off side two of the album. It is a straightforward dance song, and has some obvious comparisons to James Brown. It has a nice mix of horns and "wah wah" guitar.Don't Burn BabyScat was an early precursor to rap music, and this track is a good example of a rapid rhyme scat. The eastern feel is also reminiscent of George Harrison. "Don't burn, baby, burn. Just learn, baby, learn."Dance to the MusicHere is the big hit off the album, and the first Sly and the Family Stone single to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Charts, peaking at number 8. It is a straight up party record, but was also one of the most influential songs of the late 60's. The formula used by Sly Stone to make the songs on this record are clear here, even though he and the group did not like that approach. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shape of Things to Come by Max Frost and the Troopers (from the motion picture Wild In the Streets)This dystopian comedy-drama became a cult hit of 1960's counterculture. Max Frost and the Troopers was a fictional rock band in the film. STAFF PICKS:Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing by Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellLynch starts out the staff picks with a smooth grooving song off the soul duo's album “United.” Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced this song, which became a hit within a week of its release, going to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart.Anyone for Tennis by CreamRob brings us the theme song for the 1968 film “The Savage Seven,” an outlaw biker exploitation movie. Eric Clapton's lyrics depict a callous disregard for all the turmoil going on in the world, with the singers discussing going out for a game of tennis while everything disintegrates around them. She's A Heartbreaker by Gene PitneyWayne features an early 60's crooner who turns to a Motown sound for this go-go hit. It peaked at number 16 at the time. It is about a guy who is continually drawn to a woman who breaks his heart every time. Love Is All Around by The TroggsBruce's staff pick is probably most familiar to fans of the Christmas movie "Love Actually," where an old rocker converts it to a cheesy Christmas song called "Christmas Is All Around." The Troggs' lead singer Reg Presley wrote it in about 10 minutes, inspired by a broadcast of the Salvation Army Band performing an evangelical song called "Love That's All Around." NOVELTY TRACK:The Unicorn by The Irish RoversThe Irish story of how the unicorn missed its appointment with Noah's Ark was on the charts in 1968, and closes out our podcast this week. Mehdi Hasan is one of the most polarizing media figures today. When we polled the Roca audience to ask who we should invite onto our show, Mehdi Hasan was one of the more requested names. He has achieved a loyal following among progressive and pro-Palestinian circles and has sparred frequently on Twitter with previous We The 66 guest, John Spencer. Hasan called Spencer a propagandist and the urban warfare expert responded," I'm heartbroken." Mehdi has worked everywhere from Al Jazeera and The Intercept to MSNBC and the BBC. Late last year, MSNBC canceled his two shows at the network, resulting in his decision to leave MSNBC and start his own outlet, Zeteo News. It's unclear why MSNBC canceled his shows, although many note that he was vocally anti-Israel post October 7th and hesitated to, among other things, call the Hamas combatants "terrorists" instead of merely "fighters." We should note, however, that he has condemned Hamas' acts on 10/7 as terrorist acts. In this conversation, the RocaNews cofounders Max Frost and Max Towey asked Mehdi about his solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, multiculturalism in the UK, whether Islam is reconcilable with Western values, how the Muslim community will vote in 2024, what he thinks of Wokeness, how Israel can defeat Hamas, and much more. To some, Alex Berenson was the "pandemic's wrongest man." To others, he was a prophet, whose Covid and vaccine predictions -- although deeply unpopular and ultimately the reason for his ban from Twitter -- came true. A graduate of Yale University, Alex Berenson got a job as a journalist at The New York Times around 2000. During his award-winning 10-year tenure at the paper, he covered the pharma industry, Bernie Madoff, Hurricane Katrina, and the Iraq War. He ultimately left the newspaper to become a novelist, which proved a more lucrative and comfortable career. Then, in 2019, he published a book on the link between cannabis and psychosis called "Tell Your Children." From Joe Rogan, on whose podcast Berenson has appeared multiple times, to establishment scientists, critics accused him of cherry-picking data and being alarmist. Today, however, his cannabis research is less controversial. In 2020, in the early days of the pandemic, Berenson became a critic of the federal government's response to Covid. He called BS on lockdowns, mask mandates, contact tracing, and more. Then, when the vaccine came out, he raised questions about the clinical trials, saying they were run poorly and predicting that the vaccine may have significant side effects. In late summer 2021, he sent a tweet saying the vaccines would be "at best a therapeutic," and Twitter banned him. He sued Twitter and won the appeal, and has since sued the federal government for colluding with Twitter to ban him. He sat down with RocaNews co-founders Max Frost and Max Towey to discuss his lawsuit, censorship, his pandemic views, his cannabis views, and much more. Make sure to subscribe and please send your questions/thoughts/feedback to wethe66@rocanews.com.
In 2021, Winston Marshall was the lead guitarist of Mumford & Sons, one of the most successful rock bands of the 21st century. He co-founded the band in 2007 and was instrumental (no pun intended) to its extraordinary success. Then, after Tweeting a positive review of conservative journalist Andy Ngo's new book on the radical left's violence in 2020, a mob came after him. They bombarded him, his family, and bandmates with threats. He eventually apologized but later reneged on the apology and left the band. In the years since, he has become an outspoken defender of free speech and the importance of open discourse. He has since founded the Dissident Dialogues, which will be hosting its inaugural event in Brooklyn this weekend. In this interview, the RocaNews co-founders Max Frost and Max Towey ask him about his experience of getting canceled, his relationship with the band today, his time debating Nancy Pelosi, and what he's doing in this next chapter of his life.

Episode 437 features an interview with singer, songwriter and producer Max Frost, whose voice and tunes you probably know from a few different contexts. Max grabbed a guitar at the age of eight and never put it down. He achieved his first taste of virality with singles “White Lies” and “Adderall,” paving the way for his full-length debut Gold Rush in 2018. The standout “Good Morning” scored a slew of syncs, including Pepsi, ESPN, CBS, Shameless, Grey's Anatomy, The War With Grandpa, and American Idol. He emerged as the rare presence who could share the stage with artists including Gary Clark, JR. and Fitz and The Tantrums or Panic! At The Disco and Twenty One Pilots. Between packing headline shows, he delivered show-stopping performances on Good Morning America and Live! With Kelly and Ryan. He even found himself in the studio with none other than Sir Elton John. His sudden TikTok stardom (500k followers) also shines a light on a different talent of Max's charming, idiosyncratic use of short-form content, personality, and pure musical talent. Max escaped Los Angeles and put down roots in Nashville where he is readying his newest EP Shelby Ave., Pt. 1, which comes out in February.

This episode features a conversation with host, Rhonda Willers, and guest, Jazmin Swanson.Jazmin is a ceramic artist and teacher currently living in Oceanside, California. At one point after graduating from art school, she told herself “I'm never going to be an artist again,” because it felt safe to say this, but as you'll hear that only lasted for a bit of time because her creativity and urge to make came back. We explore what it means to find your voice again after a creative break and how she has always had this way of confidently doing things and knowing herself well enough to advocate for what she needs. On today's episode, I am joined by OG Austinite, and my ACL & Concert Bestie, Nick Moreau, aka “Yonce”. Nick has become one of my closest friends and someone who is a modern-day historian of Austin's staple events like SXSW, ACL and Blues on the Green. Our shared loved of music brought us together, but some of my most memorable stories in Austin have been with him. Nick is authentically and unapologetically himself and doesn't hold back when it comes to being REAL, and supporting his friends and causes he cares about. We talk about his love for Max Frost and the stages of “Lit Nick” at Love & Lightstream, his wild run-in with Tierra Whack's posse at ACL and casually attempting to walk off the ACL stage at James Blake, and how his love of music has made him the ultimate hype man at any event we're at together. Please enjoy this very special episode with my festie bestie, Nick Moreau, and if you could please rate, leave a review and share this episode with others!Guest: Nick Moreau (Yonce)Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yonceMake sure to tune in every Wednesday to watch new episodes of “Concert Queen Connect” and make sure to ‘like' and ‘subscribe' to our YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbNiyZMWKbK2pH4J2rdj69Q?sub_confirmation=1Host: Clarissa CardenasIG: https://www.instagram.com/atxconcertqueen/ Website: http://www.theconcertqueen.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theconcertqueenVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/Concert-QueenListen to our podcast:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/concert-queen-connect/id1538535270Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6y3m5SLW5CnBvBpvh7cXgT?si=dN1Vlr9eQf2diQFrPIffugProducer: Steve Souza (http://www.souzamedia.com)IG : https://www.instagram.com/the.souz/

Kyle Goings, better known to Twitter followers as @CoveChatter stopped by to discuss his Defensive Independent Game Score (DIGS) system. We talked about how the Giants current pitching is performing through the lens of DIGS as well as what DIGS thinks about Giants pitching prospects on the way up. This was a really fun conversation, but we just scratched the surface of all the work Kyle has done —which includes scoring performances throughout major league history as well as the contemporary game. You can find all of this at Kyle’s DIGS website and I highly recommend giving it a look. You can also follow Kyle’s DIGS-specific Twitter account @DigsPitcher.For our conversation, I referred to several graphics that Kyle shared with me beforehand that I’ll drop below. This week we hung out with Max Frost! We talk music, his new single, the meal that he would cook to win an Iron Chef Challenge, The Last Dance, and how he stays mentally healthy. Music featured in this episode: “Good Morning” “Sayonara” “Back In the Summer” “Money Problems”
American singer Max Frost is back in the country touring with Bastille Gem chats to Max about new music and when we can expect him back for a headline show.
Max Frost had a busy 2019, supporting Rob Thomas around his North American Tour, opening for Twenty One Pilots on their US headline Bandito Tour as well as performing at Lollapalooza in August. Max has also achieved four consecutive songs go to Number One on esteemed music blog HypeMachine. Max Frost is best known for his smash hit Good Morning which has over 40 Million Global Streams to date and over 3 Million views on YouTube! Max has worked with global stars such as DJ Snake and previously supported Panic! At The Disco, Fitz and The Tantrums, and Gary Clark Jr. Creative freedom, and the ability to write and record music driven by feeling and instinct, has always been central to Frost’s musical mindset. Playing the drums and guitar by age eight, and typically the youngest members of the diverse bands he was in as a teenager — everything from bluegrass to blues and jazz to hip-hop — Frost says it was the emotional connection to the music that forever drove his passion. At the time of this interview, Max Frost was in Australia, touring with Bastille, with hopes of not just entertaining Aussie crowds, but making a difference after the devastating bushfires of the Summer. But, it's not just his heart of gold that makes Luke and Susie want to claim him as an honorary Australian. https://www.maxfrost.net/

We had the opportunity to interview Max Frost! It began as an experiment.Music had always been the focus of my short, 17 year old, guitar playing life in Austin, Texas. I was obsessed with The Beatles, Hendrix, Sinatra, and Sam Cooke. The Blues were my foundation. I hung with a crowd of young musicians who shared my love of the classics. We listened to vinyl. We played in bands. My safe, little vintage rock world was turned on its head when underground hiphop came knocking at my door. Rappers wanted me to sing hooks on their songs. I never in a million years thought what I did made sense in hiphop. Eminem and Outkast had blown my mind as a kid, but it was still an alien world to me.As uncomfortable as it was, I jumped in. At first, my bluesy singing made the hooks come across as a sort of “blue-eyed soul” thing. I didn’t identify with that. The hooks I loved most had been sampled from old records. They contrasted the beat in a cool way. They felt distorted and fuzzy and their juxtaposition with modern music had an accidental magic. The experiment was to see if I could convince people that my hook was a sample. I sang more laid back, more like a crooner than a hard attacking soul singer. I distorted my voice with guitar amps and heavy reverbs that created a huge space. The summer I turned 19 I made this slow beat and wrote a hook over it called “Nice and Slow.” I used my sampled vocal approach and started sending the song around and playing it for people. The response was always, “Whoa! Where did you sample this from?” At that moment, my sound was born.By the spring, my songs were gaining some attention. “Nice and Slow” and “White Lies” charted on Hype Machine and a few months later I signed with Atlantic Records. A major-label deal marked a serious second chapter in my creative life. Songs were no longer practice swings. They counted. There were real stakes now. But with a new opportunity in front of me, I dove in head first.I now had access to collaborators and studios that enabled me to indulge in new sounds. Though I remained a producer on all the tracks and played 90 percent of the instruments, the songs were elevated thanks to the input of the brilliant writers and producers I met — guys like Benny Blanco, Nick Ruth, and Franc Tetaz. What began as an experiment in a basement lab blossomed into a larger-scale process, resulting in the songs on my EP, Intoxication.Sonically, I was inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse and Raphael Saadiq, who breathed fresh life into the classic ’60s soul sound. Their vintage songs have a modern edge to the production. My process is the reverse. I try to write songs that, if played on an acoustic guitar, are very modern. But my execution of the singing, instrumentation, and production is vintage.Lyrically, the songs on Intoxication personify love, money, and death as a drug, reflecting the way my submission to imagination has consumed me like a chemical. My experiment became an abstract mind state that I want the listener to visit. The experiment of music has led me to places I never thought I’d go in this world. In 2016, I did shows in Australia, Germany, London, and all over the US. It always shocks me to speak face to face with a person who has been listening to my music from the other side of the globe for years. It reminds me that, despite how much time I spend alone in a dark studio, there’s a world of people out there that you are trying to reach. If you really expose your truth to them in a song, it doesn’t matter where they are. They will respond. My travels have also led me to collaborations with artists around the world. I released a track called “Ghosting” with an amazing producer named St. Albion and also wrote/produced a track for a new artist from Australia named Mike Waters. As much as I’m focused on my own music right now, I look forward to one day spending a lot of time helping other people develop their own experiments. My last year of high school and only year of college were only made possible by my abuse of Adderall. I first discovered its powers attempting to write college essays, and pretty much lost my mind from there. It allowed me to get away with chronic procrastination and mainly focus on music. But it certainly spiraled me into an unbalanced state of sleeplessness, anxiousness, highs, and lows that left me a pretty worn out person. My Adderall years manifested themselves in a song I made with Cook Classics and Ross Golan called “Adderall” that I recently released. I sort of told the sad story in a funny way and tried to make it light hearted, and it seems that people have reacted. I’ll do college shows now where people come with their prescription bottles and ask me to sign them (which might be a crime or something I don’t know…). Soundtrack Six-Pack, Volume Three Do you have favorite songs that are buried in films and on soundtracks from yesteryear? So do we and lots and lots and LOTS of them! So we're breaking out the VCRs and dusting off the old vinyl for a sidecast series presenting short, sweet, and random collections of soundtrack gems. Hosts Jon Lamoreaux of The Hustle Podcast, Joe Royland of Sit & Spin with Joe, and Eric Miller of Pods & Sods each bring two songs to share, hence the six-pack. Not a ton of research, not a ton of pontificating, just three friends sharing some of the greatest (albeit often obscure) soundtrack songs the world has ever known. In Volume Three, we're unpacking some classics by Galliano, Roger Foster, Extreme, John Taylor, Max Frost and The Troopers, and Sue Saad and The Next.
"Baby, It's a brand new day." So sings Max Frost in his song, "Good Morning." And so tells Celeste to herself everyday. The important thing to remember about new year's resolutions is that when you mess up, every day is a new day. You have the potential to start over everyday. On your goals and in your relationship. In today's episode we highlight good goal advice in the songs "Good Morning" and "You Gotta Be" as Rich and Celeste dish out their best advice for keeping up with goals.

Prior to landing at Neon Gold and Atlantic Records, Matt Maeson honed his skills on some daunting stages. As part of his family’s ministry, he played “songs about salvation” at prisons, and “in front of strippers and Hell's Angels at Sturgis, one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the world.” There was plenty in between, but eventually, his first songs would go online in 2015 and 2016.We pick up the story with his 2018 release, “The Hearse,” while Maeson also discusses his admiration for fellow songwriter Andy Hull, his surprising love of Troye Sivan, and how he ended up in Nicaragua, writing some of that EP.AtlanticPodcasts.com
This is gonna be a great week for the podcast. Why? Two episodes! First up, we've got pure fun. This mix is all about rocking out with a care free vibe. We start off in the indie pop rock world with a selection of bands that would fit well with Two Door Cinema Club and then bring in more electronic/production elements. Many of those have a tinge of disco, funk, and 80s flare so we even go back 35 years for one of the greats. Enjoy it and look out for another episode in a day or two. It's all about authenticity for Savannah Conley. From her parents telling her to "never do anything that's not you," to her respecting fellow musician Brent Cobb for being "forever and always...himself," the Nashville-based artist is making music only she could make. And this unwavering honesty is on full display in new EP, "Twenty-Twenty."Find out how she remains authentic, discover details of her songwriting process, and listen in as she reveals her first music love.

DJ 86 and I decided to trade 3rd and 4th Thursdays this month. While it is not required by 86 or the station in anyway, I like to treat fill-in shows as a chance to cater to a different programming audience; doing a show that isn't exactly like The Cone of Noize but should hopefully find a way to appeal to its regular audience. Even though my show is "freeform" sometimes it's nice to take a break from the restrictions inherent in that form. Basically, in a world of absolute freedom, genre-rigidity is liberation!
