In this episode, Gabby and AJ talk to Mark Avery, author of A Message from Martha. As a biologist and conservationist, Mark takes us back in time to reconstruct the biology, habitat, and final era of the Passenger Pigeon. The Passenger Pigeon's extinction is one of the most dramatic extinction stories of the 20th century, resulting in the loss of the most numerous bird on Earth. This episode explores everything from nesting biology and historical accounts to habitat destruction and the last Passenger Pigeon to die in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo—Martha.Listen to past episodes here: Project Upland PodcastIf you want to support independent journalism, check out the Project Upland Podcast Patreon.Read more at projectupland.com.

When we first began working in Nepal, it was estimated that only 1.4 percent of the population knew Jesus and that most of the population would be considered unreached with the Gospel. We believe there is an opening for the Gospel in this beautiful country, and we want to continue to partner with people who faithfully serve there. This year, we will continue to sow into Touch Nepal (led by our own Mark Avery), our friends Biki and Satya, and Steve Larson, as they train pastors in remote areas. It is exciting to see the next generation of leaders in Nepal equipped with the Gospel, and we love being a part of that. anthemto.org/celebrate-generosity

Dinner for Shoes is a podcast hosted by Sarah Wasilak, a fashion and food enthusiast with her mouth full. With appearances by her cats, Trish and Kit, and agendas that almost always go to shit, we aim to dive into a discussion about fashion and style and break some bread in each episode. In episode 18, Ayame + Award Season Trends, Sarah names her favorite celebrity red carpet looks from the Golden Globes, Governor Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and Emmys. She also discusses trends she's spotting, with input from celebrity stylists Tara Swennen (whose clients include Ali Wong and Kristen Stewart) and Mark Avery (who dresses Ryan Gosling). Crucial to award season for all fashion lovers is the team behind Check the Tag, who also answered some questions for Dinner for Shoes about how they ID celebrity outfits at lightning speed on award show night. Sarah enjoys sashimi salad from Ayame Sushi in Hoboken, since it was revealed that Chef Nobu prepared the same dish for the 81st annual Golden Globe Award attendees. To no one's surprise, Kit got a taste of the spicy mayo… and then some. Dinner for Shoes podcast episodes are released weekly on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple. You can follow along for updates, teasers, and more on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. If there are any fashion topics you've been pondering or good eats you think Sarah should try, don't hesitate to send a DM or an email. Dinner for Shoes is an original by The Kai Productions. Dr Ruth Tingay is a conservationist and campaigner who has spent her career primarily focused upon the world's raptor population (that's Birds of Prey, rather than Veloci-...) Her career was inadvertently kickstarted through working at Heathrow airport's Animal Reception Centre. Here she welcomed back the UK's Red Kite population for their reintroduction to our country, as well as the usual pampered felines, escaped pooches, and boxes stuffed full of mystery birds. Throw Nile Crocodiles, an annual Mexican Hawk Migration of 4.6 million birds and the DNA of Golden Eagles into the mix, and you get an incredibly varied career that has leapfrogged the globe from Mauritius to Mexico then on to Madagascar and many other countries beginning with ‘M' besides. But since 2009, Ruth has been focused upon the plights of our domestic birds; shedding light upon wildlife crime through her Raptor Persecution blog, and through joining with Mark Avery and Chris Packham to spearhead their Wild Justice which is holding the Governments of Britain to account for ongoing enviro-failings and eco-crimes. His adventures in dreaming up huge challenges, and the way he brings people together in a truly amazing story. I hope Mark's story of how he started running, and what he has done since will inspire you as much as it has me.

I tweeted recently - I'm @charliemoores if you'd like to check this out or follow me - that I'd been a little bit quiet on Substack, the blogging platform I use.I explained why in a post I wrote called 'Choosing sides on August 12th'...and it occurred to me that actually I'd been a bit quiet on Buzzsprout too - so here's that blog in audio form, slightly changed to fit the rhythms of my speech but well, the sentiments and intentions are exactly the same...So, About five years ago a senior charity figure ‘advised' me (way too aggressively for my liking) to ‘choose sides'. It seemed an odd and unnecessary thing to say. I had ‘chosen sides' years earlier: I was on the side of wildlife, of plants, of biodiversity and nature and was utterly opposed to hunting, shooting, cruelty, exploitation, and wildlife crime. I'd proved that over and over again, right back from when I launched Charlie's Bird Blog (hat was in a distant past before WordPress and home wi-fi) writing about what I saw birding around the world with an airline I worked for (and which I left in 2010). Proved it again when after what I thought was a friendly merger with a similar but US-based blog called 10,000 Birds I was booted off at short notice (literally almost overnight) because my anti-hunting views were ‘upsetting' Americans and I refused to compromise. Again when I launched Birders Against Wildlife Crime (BAWC) a decade ago and came up with the 3Rs (Recognise, Record, Report). When I helped launch Hen Harrier Day - an idea initially conceived by BAWC member Alan Tilmouth and brilliantly taken up by Mark Avery and Chris Packham. When I started podcasting under the Talking Naturally banner. When I joined the board of League Against Cruel Sports to help fashion a policy on shooting (I did my term and moved on). When in 2015 I was asked by Lush founder Mark Constantine - a Talking Naturally listener - to make podcasts on wildlife and the environment for him and Lush.Listening back to all of that I suppose I have moved around a bit looking for the ‘ideal situation', but I'd clearly chosen sides a long, long time ago. And I like to think I've carried on in the same vein since with The War on Wildlife Project and Off the Leash. In just the last four months I've written or podcasted about, for example, gamekeepers and raptor persecution, explained why if foxhunting is banned it still takes place, discussed the royal immunity from crime in relation to two Hen Harriers killed at Sandringham, and why the shooting industry needs - unequivocally - to be stopped.Anyway, I'm on the move again, taking my love of wildlife and my total opposition to hunting and shooting with me. Taking everything I've learned over the years, and all of the experiences I've built up and the contacts I've made. Taking my energy, focus, and drive. Where am I going? I'm going to be joining Rob Pownall and Matt Smithers at Keep The Ban.Follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/charliemooresFor more information on Keep The Ban please go to the website https://www.keeptheban.uk/ and follow them (us!) on Twitter, on Facebook, and on Instagram

Go for it now, The future is not promised to no one. On this weeks episode I sat down with Mark Avery the family man, the mental health advocate, the ultra endurance athlete and most of all one of the most humble humans I have ever spoken to... I mean it! From completing 21 half marathons in 21 days, running 1000kms from Brisbane to Sydney to 24hours on a treadmill. Non of these define Mark as the athlete he seems. No because he is much more than just an endurance athlete. His story says so. From suffering from depression, his own drinking habits and death of a close friend he found solace within exercise and reaching out for help. A family man he is paving a positive path for his kids and the people around him. He is giving permission for others to follow suit and achieve unimaginable goals but remember and as he says in the episode GO ALL IN AND DO THE WORK! I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did

Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the wonderful Mark Avery. Mark lost a good friend, Frank, to cancer in late 2014. This event sparked mental health challenges for Mark which he internalised thinking he had to be ‘strong' and began drinking away what he felt was weakness. Fortunately, Mark eventually decided to speak with a doctor which fuelled a transition into ultramarathon running and raising mental health awareness. Mark ran 21 half marathons in 21 days, having conversations about mental health each day, in partnership with Gotch4Life. He ran from Tweed Heads to Sydney, and most recently ran 24 hours on a treadmill in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record and has continued raising funds for the Cancer Council. What I personally love about this conversation is Mark's vulnerability and thoughtfulness through reflection to the questions posed. He seems to have gone on this journey from running for a sense of self-worth to running with a purpose of contribution. He shares intimately his experience of not meeting the World Record he had recently planned and what he hopes, in persisting through the 24 hours on a treadmill despite this, inspires in others. I can personally say with certainty his story is one of inspiration and impact. Please enjoy this really lovely conversation with Mark Avery.CONNECT WITH JENNAH-LOUISEMindset Coaching | https://www.jennahlouise.com.auInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseCONNECT WITH MARKInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/markjamesavery#jennahlouise #tobehumanpodcast
Dr. Mark Avery is a former Conservation Director with the RSPB, a scientist and naturalist, he his passionate about birdlife. Mark is the author of Inglorious (2015) a hugely influential book which accused the driven grouse shooting industry of being completely unsustainable. He campaigns on conservation issues, he's a blogger, writer and public speaker. Mark, along with Ruth Tingay and Chris Packham, is a director of the legal campaign group Wild Justice
Rare, endangered animals are under attack from rich, powerful people who operate above the law. But this isn't a story about illegal poaching in Africa, nor animals being hunted for Chinese medicines. This is happening in the UK. Arthur Snell talks to environmental activist Mark Avery, former RSPB conservation director, co-founder of Wild Justice, and author of Inglorious, about grouse shooting, who really owns our moorland, and ending the persecution of raptors. “These grouse moors are wildlife crime hotspots.” “Grouse shooting is seen as a posh, sexy sport. But it's only a sport if the grouses have guns too.” “So many birds are being poisoned, shot, or disappeared on grouse moors that it's impossible to ignore anymore.” “If you ever see someone killing a bird of prey, know that that is illegal.” https://www.patreon.com/bunkercast Presented by Arthur Snell. Bert Alcorn, Mark Avery, and Ryan Hinkle recently returned from an amazing trip to Nepal. The main reason for the trip was to celebrate the graduations of 46 pastors and leaders who just finished a 2-year Pastoral Training Certificate Program through Touch Nepal, but it was also a great time for the guys to see some of our local leaders who we partner within Nepal, and to visit some of the significant religious sites for Hindus and Buddhists. For photos that go along with the trip, check out this Google Photo album! https://photos.app.goo.gl/hW84rWZS4ARJr9uy5About Anthem:Anthem Ventura is a church of house churches practicing the way of Jesus together in our city. "it's not a case of what would you like or what's possible - it's what's needed."Part Three of a podcast by Off the Leash's Charlie Moores made to support the Langholm Initiative, the award-winning community development trust for Eskdale, and a community buy out that is aiming to repurpose a former grouse moor owned by Buccleuch Estates into the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. Charlie explained more about the background to the buyout in the introduction to Part One and discussed the incredibly strong community in Langholm in Part Two: it is an absolutely fascinating and inspiring story that is centred around Eskdale and the tightly-knit community of Langholm, a burgh in Dumfries and Galloway just 20 miles north of Carlisle, and the Duke of Buccleuch, one of the richest men in the UK who owns a staggering 217,000 acres of moorland, farms and forestry - including Langholm Moor and the Tarras Valley. Back in May 2019, Buccleuch Estates announced a decision to sell 25,000 acres of Langholm Moor and the Tarras Valley. Local interest in buying at least some of the land grew and the Langholm initiative launched a fundraising campaign on behalf of the community.'The Impossible Dream' as it was termed initially, took off. In just six months the campaign attracted £3.8m in grants and funding, including a crowd funder which raised over £200,000 - and the community now legally owns 5,200 acres of land which includes upland moor, ancient woodland, meadows, peatlands and a river valley.A second fundraiser has now been set up to buy an additional 5000 acres. The money has to be raised by May 2022 or the land could be put up for sale on the open market....and a chance to manage a whopping 10,000 acres could be lost. Would he like to come to Langholm, Charlie was asked, to make a podcast to help 'spread the word'? Would he ever...In Part One, Charlie visited the reserve with Tarras Valley Estate Manager Jenny Barlow and Development Manager Angela Williams; in Part Two he spoke with Langholm residents, Margaret Pool, Chair of Langholm Initiative, and Mairi Telford-Jammeh, a member of the Langholm Executive, and in Part Three he is talking with Kevin Cumming, who in 2019 was working for the Langholm Initiative and managing the Wild Eskdale project which aimed to promote eco-tourism in the area as well as provide outdoor education for the local community. For Charlie, Kevin was the 'face' of the buyout and it's likely that many of us were introduced to the details and purpose of the buyout through an articulate and thorough blog he wrote for Mark Avery's website in Dec 2019. Fortunately, Kevin happened to come into the Langholm Initiative office just as Charlie was finishing talking with Margaret and Mairi. He looked a little - er, weary (for a very good reason as he explains in the conversation) but immediately agreed to a chat before heading home. He is a remarkable individual - softly spoken with a core of steel if you like...Charlie began the conversation by asking Kevin to both explain the links between the Langholm Initiative, Wild Eskdale, and the Tarras Valley nature reserve and to go back to the beginning when the opportunity to buy the land had first arisen...Langholm Initiative Website and Twitter feedGo Fund me Crowd Funder (Community Buyout 2)Tarras Valley Nature Reserve Twitter feedYouTube Tarras Valley Live Event (December 1st) Mark Avery Guest Blog | Langholm Moor Community Buyout by Kevin Cumming

This week I am joined by Mark Avery to talk bout his journey from loosing a neighbour and close mate to cancer which lead Mark down a path of having panic attacks at work and masking his pain with alcohol. Funnily enough it was his daughter that came home with a Mickey Mouse drawing which said "If you can dream it, you can do it' that sparked Mark to sign up to a marathon and make a change in his life. From there he has done 21 half marathons in 21 days and 20 marathons in 20 days from Tweed Heads to Sydney all to raise money for Mental Health through The Gotcha4Life Foundation. He is now setting out to conquer the record for most distance ran in 24 hours which he is aiming to get 265km's to raise money for Outrun Cancer Foundation. It was a pleasure to chat to Mark and I am grateful for him taking some time out of his day to jump on the podcast.
