A dental podcast for the AVERAGE dentist. No question is too controversial for Joshua Austin DDS and Lance Timmerman DMD. Questions are NOT "best bonding agent" or "best impression material," these questions are the ones that are burning desire types. You know, like "can I harm my assistant fo…

So... its been 32 years. in a ROW What could POSSIBLY go wrong?
OK. You still with me? Yes, it has been a while. We don't even know.... We catch up with the last year! You can fast forward. Or not. Ever dismissed an entire family for the behavior of a single member? Dismiss the ONE? Or is it grounds to dismiss EVERYONE? Can you hate TOO many people? Petty cash. Do you still use that? Why/why not? Shout out to The Stanley Institute, Implant Pathways, Beever Dental Lab, Chucri Chemali, IDS, Smile Line Europe, Smile Line USA
OK. Clearly it has been a minute. Holly is sorry (Lance doesn't care). We catch up, we talk travel, charity, and the grind of dentistry. And if you would like to contribute to the cat sanctuary in Samos, Greece, please click: DONATE
WI are on "location"! "Live" from Palm Desert, we catch up. Christmas is over, we catch up. We tackle some "reddit" input and some listener mail. Are you open between Christmas and New Years? Why or why not? As a listener, are we considered friends? So your hands shake when treating patients?
Wow! Time flies. Where have we been? I can explain....
Every had your butthole waxed? Me neither... Bianca rejoins the show to explain the US "tip culture". I may not be what you think...
Ok. Slightly more sober now. We delve into Facebook groups and share advice. Issue 1: New owner buys practice and will be FFS (fee for service). Must you credential them? Issue 2: PPO third party negotiator can't get all relevant info? What to do? Dental influencers. Do you strain muscles patting yourself on the back? Is your pity party well attended? Peace.
We are back for more, giving Yapi love like we do... Seriously, don't be dumb. We traveled, but not together. Ever done a solo trip? Advice today was for 3 anonymous posts. They really get around. First: How do you handle a parent that you have never met that brings in long time pediatric patients and makes a scene? If you only work 2 days per week but a new patient calls after hours, who makes the call? Using a personal cell phone? Adulting sucks. If a parent tells their kid that they now pay their dental bill, but the kid won't pay, who is responsible?
So... are you adventurous? Really? Are you SURE...? A weekend getaway becomes more memorable than planned. Or WAS it? Advice this week: How do you handle patients that repeatedly no-show for their appointment? Who do you work for? The patient, or the person signing your check?
Mondays suck. That's why we release on Wednesday. But it doesn't fix Monday.... We stayed home. No travel diary. Boring. Next episode will have some travel. Promise. Is it MANDATORY to give time off for a funeral? Are you a heartless bastard? Does the office have a cell phone? How do you text? At end of day, does everyone leave together? If someone stays late, do you ALL stay late?! All this begs the question, why did we apply to dental school?!?
Some of the best parts of travel is hearing the weirdest stuff from history. Past generations were as messed up as we are! We made our way to Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and Cologne. Oh, yeah... for a dental meeting....
Tired of dental talk? Good, because there is NONE during THIS episode. Lance and Holly talk about their trip on the WAY to their trip to IDS. This is how NOT to travel. Or the PERFECT way....
Back into the CE groove! Do you work IN your business or ON your business? Me neither. We hit Vegas for a weekend to get better at growing the practice, and since we are becoming more niche, we need a different approach. And to see Wayne Newton. Viva Las Vegas!
Ever taken CE and at the end decided "nope. NOT doing that..." Holly made that decision for Lance after their trip to Spain. Lance took the Zaga Zygoma Implant class in Barcelona with Dr Carlos Aparicio It was a fantastic experience, and of course, an adventure was worked in as well. The trip started in Madrid, with a little tapas tasting, a cooking class, and just a general walkabout. Then a quick train to Barcelona and the learning began! "You'll shoot your eye out!" Until next time!
So.... we didn't forget about you. "We were on a BREAK....!" Lance and Holly are back, and they fill y'all in on what has been going on. The why.... Lance then talks with Dr Bobbi Stanley and Dr Phil Chahine about their new podcast, The Lucrative Dentist. They will be hosting a meeting at The Fontainebleau in Miami in May, so be sure to check your schedules, and subscribe to their show. Or email Dr Bobbi at drbobbi@stanleyinstitute.com or Phil at drphil@just-smiles.com directly!
so.... how did the seattle protocol begin? Was it Holly's fault? The show starts with a recap of Lance's bike accident. Fun. We skip reddit and talk about subjects from Facebook groups, only to learn that all evils start with the RDH crowd.... PEACE
Ok. Summer is over. Holly is NOT happy, however, she DOES love Halloween, Thanksgiving... Have you seen Hocus Pocus 2?
Ready for more WI? Too bad.... If you start a scratch FFS practice, what does carefully planned and researched mean to YOU? It may not mean what you think it means. If you cover for another dental office, do you do it for free? What IS the common courtesy? PEACE!
The rant continues. If you are an employee dentist, is the patient yours or the practice's? If you left the practice, is it STILL your patient? If you don't take a CBCT of the implant you placed but it SEEMED to go well, is that a success? If the patient never returns, can we count it as a win?
So, we FINALLY have nice weather in Seattle. To have less noise while we record, the AC was turned off. Bad idea. Holly is grumpy without wine. She is grumpy-ER if she overheats.... So this was fun....
We are back! Back from Chicago, before we head to Whistler, we took a moment, a quick minute. Many wanted to hear HOLLY'S take on the annual list of 32 influencers from Incisal Edge magazine. Even with fresh blood, "the song remains the same." Peace!
Back and "well rested" from a Greek sojourn, Lance and Holly share their foreign exploits. Can CE be fun? (hell yes!) Alex Fibishenko puts on a GREAT CE trip. Look up Dental Implant Masters. We start with Avid Listener feedback. THANKS! Our reddit! comes from someone with 5 years dental experience wondering if they are in the wrong profession. Maybe.
It's been a minute. A hot minute. It's fine. Another vent session, Holly get's bleeped again.... Prior to heading to Greece, we vent our spleen. Enjoy....
Grape juice made us late! Life has been busy.... deal. Reddit user says they sucked when they graduated and one year later, they still suck. Time to give up? Peace!
We are BACK. We are in Napa, wine tasting. Drinking.... It's classy.... Lance had a listener question that Holly shit all over, but that's fine.... Who pays for CE, the employer or the employee? Would you stay with a job that gave you a 46% pay cut? Are HMO's taking patients for a ride? Do you shit talk other offices? PEACE!
So, no, we did not forget you. It's "complicated". After IV sedation training in San Antonio, Lance finally carved a minute to update. The reddit! this week if from an entitled Karen getting an emergency implant on #8. We have strong words. Peace!
Where has the time gone! SO many places... Lance and Holly catch everyone up with their globe trotting.... and spew some advice too.... Buckle up!
Welcome back! Forgive the delay.... We were joined by the Staffords, all the way from Bristol, England (mostly. Chris is a bit of a Nomad.... Glasgow.... Limerick.... All over. I mean, they are ALL basically suburbs of London, right?). We get from fresh takes from another culture. What could POSSIBLY go wrong? Hit up our Patreon!
Our first AMA episode! Ask Me Anything was a loaded request, but worked out ok. Holly was sure to have wine in hand this time, so a bit unfiltered. Just how we like her. Of course, we need to give shout outs to those that we love: Tara Hardin, Jana Gyurina-Bever, Bobbi Stanley, Seka Dobric, Silvara Winery, Otis Kenyon, Kontos Cellars, Uva Furem Wines, Mark Ryan Wines, Willows Lodge, Matthews Wine, Pondera Wine, Turtulia Wines, Papa Randy, Zak Allmand, Zach Meiners, Better Health, Phil Reddington, Dimitris Liolos, Katie Egan Barefoot, Izzy Mercado, Mark Dilatush, Evangaline Fee, Brittany Murphy, David Sanders, Alex Wardian, Jean Saleeby McCrossan. Check out our Patreon!!
Holly returns with more wit and wisdom, as only SHE can do. After she talks about her melt down watching 1883, we discuss deposits for treatment, walk ins, hypocritical lecturers/consultants and pts saying the N word. Good stuff! Peace
See what I did there? Lance's daughter Bianca makes an appearance, venting about botox patients and how this podcast thing might save money on therapy.... (but check out Better Help for a professional....). Peace!
Lance and Holly return from Chicago Midwinter, cold and ready for their weighted blanket! It was a lot of fun and can't wait for more. Listen to this weeks episode, where we give shout outs to GC America, the AACD, our pal J Quint Whipple with Phoenician Dental Studio, Eugene Royzengurt updates us on the Ukraine crisis, LVI, dining at Carnivale and Soho House in Chicago, Better Help for our remote therapy, Chris Stafford going to the Kois Center, The Holderness Family on the Amazing Race, and of course.... Reddit!
GC America has asked Lance to speak at Chicago Midwinter, so this episode is a quickie! Again, we encourage therapy, like that found at Better Help. Having JUST returned from Moab, UT you can actually HEAR the fatigue. The Reddit! question is from a 22 year old that didn't brush their teeth for 4 MONTHS. How screwed are they?
NOW, for a completely different perspective: Lance and Holly's daughter Brionna joins the show. She brings a co worker Hannah for an evening of frivolity. Since the show became a drinking game, we almost die during the show. It's a mess. Skip this one. Skip ALL of them....
Did you ever wonder when Lance would Morse Code, if he would do that if his wife was around? In this episode, you find out where he got it from! Holly is back and just as "spicy" as ever! Never cross a mamma bear! We discuss dental school, rural practices, and dentists' arrogant self worth.
Drunk Holly makes an appearance, but not like before.... Holly discusses with Lance about feedback, Facebook groups, fake dental influencers that piss and moan about being dropped as a KOL because they are insane, reddit questions about fees for fillings, short duration of periodic exams after a hygiene visit, and 3 visits for root canal therapy..... Shout outs to Egypt and Tara from Vino at the Landing Jennifer Simpson, Erin Elliott, Arin Lousignont, Dr Brittany, Zyris, Better Help, Tom Hadley, Optibond Solo Plus, Kim and Penn Holderness, Chris and Krystina Stafford, and Gary Holtzclaw
What happens at VoD, STAYS at VoD. Except what WE talk about....! Listen while we think back upon our time in Arizona.... Lance talks about working in offices with sub par materials. WHY?!?! and then... Wild Sex!
So.... we actually had requests for more. More cowbell? Nope. More Holly. A mixture of listener requests and online questions, this week is a "sober hodge podge." It's terrible. Don't even listen. DOWNLOAD it, please. We need the stats. But it isn't worth a listen. What do we talk about? Well.... you would have to listen to find out....
So, with just a week before Voices of Dentistry, Holly joins Lance again to vent her spleen. This is a terrible episode. Don't listen. Ever had a wine named after a murderous dentist? Lance's own daughter asks about palatal petechiae. Social media thanked her for her service. If you troll Reddit for patients, is that just changing with the times, or are you a terrible dentist?
Happy New Year! What do you do when stars don't align and schedules suck? You make lemonade! Lance starts with talk about New Years' Eve travel. Don't do it. For the first time on THIS show, Lance's wife Holly shares HER perspective. Buckle up. How do you choose a consultant to help acquire/start a practice? Be careful! How old is TOO old to start a dental career path? 15? Stay fresh!
It's the holiday season, which means great treats and eats for everyone. Who doesn't love some great chocolate truffles? Josh's dog Graham certainly does. Which is why Josh ended up at an emergency vet clinic until 2 in the morning. The boys spend waaaaaaay too long nit picking a great holiday movie. Hey Sam….wanna hear more about how I shagged your mom? Only one question this week….what do we do with ungrateful patients. I have always thought the spelling of ungrateful was weird. Shouldn't it be ungreatful? Anyway, stay fresh and Merry Christmas.
Lance hit up the big city and reminisces on his trip. Nothing is better than NYC at Christmas time. Advice starts this week with a discussion about office staff gifts. Lance has some old Tivo's in his garage if you need something last minute. Should we serve our patients snacks? Is this an Audi service department??? Finally…the subject of regifting. What about regifting a toothbrush? Great idea! Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Who doesn't love a dental meeting on Thanksgiving weekend? Oh, yeah. Everyone. Nothing better than people sleeping in the front row! Advice starts this week with a question about a nasty sneezy dentist. Is that mask enough? Do we need a body bag for this patient? Does getting an implant make you disabled? Maybe it should. Did you get your Spotify Wrapped? Lance didn't. Loser. Stay fresh
We're back! We took a couple weeks off due to some family things and travel schedules. However, just like your mom's gravy, we are coming in hot and ready for Thanksgiving. What are the best ways to heal cavities naturally? How about a bukkake of fermented cod liver oil? Sounds appetizing! How greedy is a dentist for wanting to spend more time on someone who was 40 minutes late. Total cash grab, amirite? We are thankful for how much we hate patients like this. Be safe out there, cheese bags.
Hey, it is episode 200! Did we decided to do something special? Did we recruit a great guest? Did we have a bunch of recorded shout outs from dental celebrities? No. No to any of the above. Same shit, different episode. Stay in your lane, bros. Should you confront your dentist about not knowing about airway at a time when no dentists knew about airways? Sounds like a great idea. Everyone should feel awesome after that. Why does it feel like there is sand in my mouth???? Literally the most perfect question for episode 200. Stay fresh. Here's to 200 more. Ugh, I am exhausted.
Tough news today as friend of the show Todd Ehrlich passed away the day we recorded. Josh and Lance reminisce about how great of a man Todd was and with heavy hearts, go on with the show. Are you a fan of horror movies? What are your top 3? Josh's favorite horror movie is “She's Having a Baby.” Do you think Wilma Flintstone is sexy? What should you do if your orthodontist tries to sell you MLM? What is an Italian MLM? Spaghetti sauce? Stay fresh. Rest in Power, Todd.
Did you know that weird cyborg reptilian Mark Zuckerberg has a dad? And that dad is a dentist? And he spoke along side Josh at a recent meeting? And he wears sunglasses inside? We didn't either. Strange man. Clint Timmerman joins us to dunk on Daddy Suck, followed by a power ranking of Jell-o Flavors. How about chocolate gelatin? Yumm? Could someone on reddit have Leprosy? Of course they could. Stay fresh!
How busy is too busy? How much travel is too much? Is going to Ohio globetrotting? All this and more on tonight's 60 Minutes. Should a patient ask a dentist out? Of course she should. Shooters shoot. Now get after it, Larry Bird. Hopefully she looks like Larry Bird. Rawr. How about being ambidextrous in dentistry? Would it be better to be ambidextrous or amphibious? You make the call. Peace. Fresh. Bags.
