What some refer to broadly as "Latin club music"—from dembow to raptor house—is having a moment on dance floors around the world. Since making his mark at Manchester's legendary Swing Ting parties in the 2010s, Florentino, who is of Colombian heritage, has melded high-pressure perreo, cumbia and other styles with high BPMs and fat-bottomed bass in his DJ sets and productions. The result is an ultra-kinetic, cross-cultural sound that's influenced by UK soundsystem culture as much as the sounds of the massive, diverse scenes across Latin America. The pan-Latin influences are a big part of Florentino's sound palette, but they by no means define him. Interspersed with dancehall and soca are dubstep, pummelling techno, house, UK funky, grime and more. Over the years, his experimental side has also crystallized, whether it's through the deep, sometimes trippy, reggaeton of Sangre Nueva, his collaborative project with Kelman Duran and DJ Python, his sought-after bootlegs of deconstructed guaracha, or the releases on his Club Romantico label. Most recently, he's signed with UK giant XL Recordings, including for his latest EP, Kilometro Quinze. His dizzying range and propensity for rhythmic contortions is on full display in his RA Podcast. This is a riotous mix with big drops, bouncy basslines and crispy textures, showcasing Florentino's talent as a proper party-starter. @deejayflorentino Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/912

JyellowL, shiv, Kojaque and Gemma Dunleavy, four key voices on the Dublin music scene, discuss the art of storytelling, the importance of showing up, and how being an artist is a walking contradiction. JyellowL is a Nigerian-born rapper based in Dublin, Ireland. Influenced by the city's thriving underground hip-hop scene, his music is packed with socially conscious lyrics that deal with everything from racism to the climate crisis. His debut album 2020 Division was nominated for Irish Album of the Year at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards, and his track Ozone featured on the FIFA 20 soundtrack. DJ-turned-singer-songwriter shiv was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Ireland's County Kildare. Her music blends lo-fi hip-hop beats with elements of R&B and neo-soul to create a sound which she calls “emotional escapism”. Her latest EP, The Love Interlude, was released in 2021. Rapper, producer and visual artist Kojaque was born and raised in Dublin. His sound blends elements of hip-hop and jazz with poetic lyricism. He co-founded Soft Boy Records in 2015, and has toured with the likes of Slowthai and Lana Del Rey, collaborated with Swedish-born rapper Luka Palm, and performed at festivals including SXSW and Glastonbury. Gemma Dunleavy is a songwriter, producer and north inner-city Dubliner known for experimenting with instruments like the harp and flute. She blends her love of pop and club music with traditional storytelling, and has collaborated with the likes of Murlo, DJ Sharda and Swing Ting. In her own words, her songs “each represent something I've experienced, someone I've been, someone I am or someone I've lost.”

Tarzsa (@tarzsa_williams) has quickly become a firm favourite amongst lovers of electronic soul. From her hometown of Manchester, she secured a radio residency with NTS and DJ residency with the local Swing Ting crew, both of which have served as platforms for her to showcase her selections. They span hip hop, soul, r&b, jazzy dance styles and can go from laidback sessions to peak time party. Ahead of a busy upcoming festival season, she lays down an uplifting mix to start your week off right. It is built from loose but seductive grooves that take in delicious deep house, seductive broken beat and glowing jazz-funk with plenty of heart and soul to spare. Not only are the selections here electric, but Tarzsa's ability to join the dots between them so smoothly is also what makes her such an exciting new talent.

New Music Worldwide is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian. This week’s New Music Worldwide mix comes from Jamaican party-starting crew Equiknoxx. Tracklist: https://worldwidefm.net/show/ew-music-worldwide-equiknoxx/ Known for their distinctive take on Dancehall, the crew have previously released on Demdike Stare’s DDS label and Manchester party crew Swing Ting‘s label. To date, the collective has released two LPs. 2016’s Bird Sound Power is distinctive and radical, comprised of fractured dancehall rhythms, dark soundscapes, and tinges of hip hop. 2017’s Colón Man is more cohesive, taking the dark, psychedelic sounds of the first record further. This mix comes from Equiknoxx founder and producer Bobby Blackbird. He explores the tracks that have shaped him and the group over the past few years.

It’s been a long time coming, but finally we launch our podcast. Every few weeks there will be a new mix posted by either one of our residents, friends who have played, or people who are about to play Hoya. So the duty of kicking this whole thing off goes to two trusted and heavyweight selector friends of ours. They go by the names Platt and Samrai, who run the Manchester party Swing Ting, as well as teaming up on production under the same name. That Mosca remix? Yeah, that’s them. They’ve both played Hoya, and most of our crew have guested at their party, which is one of the finest in this city. It’s rare that the first of anything at Hoya goes to non-residents, but we believe in these two so much that it just seemed a no brainer. Let it begin... 1. Tarrus Riley- Soul Grabber (Yard Vybz) 2.
