We find ourselves at the end of Book Two, and you know what that means: another ever-popular recap episode! Using the mind-bending brilliance of the László Moholy-Nagy Finnegans Wake Diagram as a jumping-off point, Toby and TJ try to rank the chapters of Book 2, nostalgically reconsider Night Lessons, and compare the text to a disparate collection of cultural touchstones. Topics may include, to varying levels of detail: JJ Abrams, Luigi Pirandello, Riverdale, The Master and Margarita, the Berliner Ensemble, Punchdrunk's Sleep No More, Passing Strange, ChatGPT, andThe Sound and the Fury. Join us in the temporary high that is generated when two readers assume that hubris isn't really a thing, and that surely they're well past the hardest part now... (Apologies for the sound quality on Toby's mic, it's an ongoing problem that will be fixed) This week's chatters: Toby Malone, TJ Young Progress: 399 pages complete, 229 pages to go; 63.54% read. Pete Abeyta from the Middle Class Film Class Podcast/YouTube Channel, joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson's 2002 film, Punch Drunk Love. This soundtrack consists of a wonderful score by producer/composer/mad scientist, Jon Brion, who also composed the scores to films that we've covered in previous episodes like, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Magnolia. Brion also reworks the iconic "He Needs Me" by Shelley Duvall from Robert Altman's 1980 film, Popeye. We Discuss:How Jon Brion and Paul Thomas Anderson closely worked together on the "sound" of the filmWhy Brion's score evokes memories of old MGM musicals and why that's intentionalRobert Altman's reaction to "He Needs Me" being used in the filmThe connection of the Punch Drunk Love score to Guillermo Del Toro's Shape of Water. For More Information about Middle Class Film Class:Website: https://www.mcfcpodcast.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/middleclassfilmclass/Twitter: https://x.com/podcastmcfcIf you'd like to support Soundtrack Your Life, we have a Patreon, where you'll get quarterly bonus episodes and more! This week, legendary West Coast steelhead guide Rick Matney brings vodka to the prom and dances with Mr. Bubbles, we get shot at by ranch owners while catching 30-inch browns, steam to Russia to shoot Donner and Blitzen for crab bait, and tie three Wooly Buggers together years before that was cool.
"Incredible from the minute you walk in." While we're in off-season for the podcast, we still continue to produce episodes of our Bonus Aftershow for Patreon Supporters. This summer, we decided to go all-in reporting on our escape room adventures abroad. Nothing excites me more than journeying to far off places in search of delicious foods, wondrous sights, and of course, renowned escape rooms. David and I separately made trips to Spain, Belgium, and London to play as many escape rooms as we could cram in. We cover David's escape room trip to Spain with a breakdown of all the escape rooms he played. In the July episode, I take a deep dive into my experience at Neotropolis. For the August episode, we compare notes on our separate trips to Belgium and the games we played, and I report back on immersive experiences in London, including Phantom Peak and Viola's Room, the new production from Punchdrunk. If you enjoy these previews, I hope you'll consider joining our Patreon. For only $5 a month, you'll get access to our Bonus Aftershow, where we continually release new episodes, even in our REPOD off-season. *A disclaimer that there will be discussions of self harm in this episode* In 2003, Chris Nowinski found himself in a WWE wrestling ring, concussed and not remembering where he was or how he was supposed to finish the match. This would be a pivotal moment not just in his life but for an entire field of research on a neurodegenerative disease long known to exist but poorly defined and even censored: chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. There's evidence that people knew about CTE — which went by names like “punch drunk” — starting in the 1920s, but it wasn't until the 2000s, when American football players began being diagnosed with CTE post-mortem, that the disease started gaining public traction. Many of those football players, including Andre Waters, had died by suicide. Chris, now a behavioral neuroscientist and the co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, pushed to get the brains of Waters and other athletes tested, and began spreading awareness and putting pressure on organizations like the NFL to acknowledge the devastation this disease can bring to athletes and their families.Today on the show we will cover what's known about CTE and how to prevent it, and how researchers are trying to find ways of diagnosing it in people who are still alive and working to find treatments. Here are some good CTE resources:https://concussionfoundation.org/CTE-resources/support https://www.bu.edu/cte/resources/resources-for-families/Send us your science stories/factoids/news for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us episode and to be entered to win a Tiny Matters coffee mug! What a disappointing evening that turned into! A night which offered so much turned into huge downer for Luton Town on Friday as they were the victims of a smash-and-grab by QPR in a 2-1 defeat. Kev is joined by The Lutonian journalist James Cunliffe to reflect on a match which saw the Town do so many good things but come undone due to two horrendous mistakes at the wrong time. The boys pick out the real positives of the first hour of the match before touching on the moments which transformed victory into defeat and then offer their takes on the various post-match reactions. The best bits of the Rob Edwards post-match press conference is also included in the podcast which finished with a shortened deep dive rather than a full one which is usually the case in an international break. Welcome to another conversation from the high/low art divide between opera-singer-turned-experimental-performer Ema Katrovas and comedian-and-TV-writer-turned-novelist Nicholas Anthony. This episode is the second half of a two-part series recorded in New York City - this time, fresh off of our experience of Sleep No More at the the McKittrick Hotel, an immersive theatre experience created by the British theatre company Punchdrunk. So what is Sleep No More? Is it a theatrical experience based on Shakespeare's MacBeth, Alfred Hitchcock's film noir Rebecca, and a real witch trial that took place in 1697 in Scotland, which is how it's advertised? Or is it an aesthetic haunted house? Or is it just an elaborate method of selling cocktails? Let's find out... Sleep No More website: https://mckittrickhotel.com/events/sleep-no-more/ Music: The bar did not end up getting back to me about who was playing live music that night. If I ever find out, will credit the musician/singer here. (If you or someone you know played Scallywags Irish Pub on 9th Ave Between 38th and 39th street late on January 10th, please let me know!) As background for my description of the experience, I used a recording someone uploaded to YouTube after smuggling a recording device into Sleep No More (!) - given that it's been up for a while, it seems the creators don't mind much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYg0thPEPVw&t=2602s Peggy Lee's rendition of "Is That All There Is?": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sWTnsemkIs Links:

An award-winning global director of cirque, cinema and stage. As a comic act designer he specializes in clowns, characters and story components. Stefan is the author of The Power of HA!Connecting Through the Heart of Humor. He studied theatre in college only to realize that his true passion lay in the cross-over to the circus arts, so he set his sights on Cirque du Soleil. As a result of his intuitive gift for mining actors' true potential, various sit-coms hired him to coach actors, including The Roseanne Show. After self-producing a number of critically acclaimed plays in Hollywood and New York City (Call of the Wild, Midsummer Nite's Text, Your Town Follies, Moon Over Madness, Atomic Holiday Lift-Off) he traveled to Europe to juggle on the streets and study with the premiere master-teacher, Philippe Gaulier. This move resulted in a collaboration with Bill Irwin and David Shiner on the Tony- winning show Fool Moon. Haves was then poached by Cirque du Soleil, collaborating on clown and character performances within six touring and resident productions (Kooza, Iris, Amaluna, Banana Shpeel, Zaya, and Drawn to Life). Prior to that, he wrote and directed the world-class Teatro Zinzanni—a dinner/ cabaret featuring such luminaries as Joan Baez. Today, Stefan Haves is a trusted international thought-leader who was tapped to present a TedX Talk in New Delhi, India, and was invited to conduct personal appearances for blue-chip companies like PepsiCo, Infosys, Mindtree, and Barclays Bank. He gleefully shares his innovative message on the role of humor, creativity, and effective expression gleaned from the stage and applied to the corporate workplace. In 2021 Haves was granted the opportunity to co-direct Katy Perry's Playland-branded New Year's dinner/cirque event at Hilton's Resort World in Las Vegas. Earlier in his career, Haves cut his teeth as an actor and a visual-comedian who appeared on stages and television shows worldwide—even garnering $10,000 on America's Funniest People by performing his signature piece "Back-Man". Stefan's 2016 original conception of the spectacle Festigal, in which Haves was tasked to showcase famous pop celebrities from television's Romania's Got Talent, used a Cirque du Soleil aesthetic in a stadium setting. His cinematic offerings include the award-winning short film Punch Drunk, featuring Academy Award nominee Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H) and full-length feature Stalled starring Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth).

Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Punchdrunk Enrichment is a charity creating transformational theatre for education, community and family audiences. Their immersive experiences for schools are designed to inspire and engage the imagination, inviting pupils and teachers on an adventure with a lasting impact. I'm joined by Peter Higgin - Artistic Director and joint CEO. Peter has been involved with Punchdrunk for his entire professional career. In 2000 he graduated from Exeter University and went on to become a founding member of Punchdrunk. He was pivotal in establishing the company's early work during their rise to critical acclaim and global success. In 2008 he co-founded Punchdrunk Enrichment and led the development of Punchdrunk's signature practice in community and educational settings. Since 2016, he has been joint CEO of Punchdrunk's charitable arm, and in 2021, as the charity rebranded as Punchdrunk Enrichment, Peter became Artistic Director.Peter's early work for Punchdrunk Enrichment focused on primary educational settings. Working with a core team of Punchdrunk creatives, these projects established a formula for the company's practice and importantly uncovered and demonstrated a need for this type of intervention.Since these early beginnings Peter has led on all of the company's artistic activity spanning family shows, participatory performances, ambitious R&D experiments in digital technology and international collaborations.Peter has a powerful belief in the transformative power of engaging with the arts and creativity. He believes in the power of imagination as one of our greatest tools and has witnessed how access to immersive experiences can unlock our innate creativity.Websitewww.punchdrunkenrichment.org.uk/www.punchdrunkenrichment.org.uk/schools/Social Media Information@PDEnrichwww.facebook.com/punchdrunkenrichmentwww.instagram.com/punchdrunkenrichment/Resources MentionedSir Ken RobinsonShow Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)Primary Education Summit – ‘Visions for the Future' – 2023Get access NOW at www.nape.org.uk/summit
Growing up in the suburbs of England, Felix Barrett — founder of immersive theater company Punchdrunk — considers himself a good kid. He's a rule-follower with a deep respect for authority. But a few eye-opening evenings at the theater introduce him to the exciting, and sometimes dangerous, world of rule-breaking. Later, on an unplanned trip to Thailand, Felix learns to embrace a life without rules and finds the beauty that exists in the extreme. If this story resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you. Myriam Achard is the Chief of New Media Partnership as well as PR Officer at Montreal's Phi Centre. Part of Achard's job is to travel around the work searching for the best immersive storytelling, art, music at festivals and gatherings around the world. She's on the lookout for new talent to bring to the Phi Centre, but also help make connections for immersive artists who are trying to find a viable pathway from immersive festivals into the broader consumer market via location-based experiences and museum contexts like the ones that Achard has been helping to create. It's a vital bridge from the immersive festival circuit into a more bespoke phase of LBEs and museums before these pieces can be more fully optimized, ported, and marketed to a broader consumer audience in the process that Astrea's Danielle Giroux broke down to me in a previous episode. Phi Studio was a key collaborator with Felix & Paul in bringing The Infinite location-based experience to audiences in Montreal, Houston, Tacoma/Seattle, and San Francisco as I explored in a conversation with Phi Studio executive producer Julie Tremblay. Achard was also instrumental in bringing Punchdrunk's Believe Your Eyes to an Phi Gallery exhibition in Venice during Venice VR Expanded (now Venice Immersive) in 2019. She said that the pandemic slowed down a number of other location-based experiences they were planning on launching in 2020, and so their LBE has slowed down a little bit, but they continue to travel with The Infinite and continue to travel with Alejandro G. Iñárritu's CARNE y ARENA. Overall, Archard is one of the leading immersive storytelling curators in the world as the Phi Centre continues to bring some of the most cutting-edge and award winning immersive art to Montreal and increasingly other locations around the world. She is proving that audiences are hungry for and really resonate with these types of immersive stories, immersive art, and immersive experiences outside of the festival context, and I'm really exited to hear more about their plans to expand their physical footprint in 2026 and continue to produce experiences, cultivate emerging talent, and curate the best of from the festival circuit. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality
